Adding Sleep Consulting to Your Doula Business with Deb Pocica (ENCORE)
2026/10/20
This week on the Becoming a Sleep Consultant podcast, I’m joined by Deb Pocica, a postpartum doula who added sleep consulting to her business and saw an immediate shift in the way she could support families.
In this episode, we talk about:
• Why sleep consulting is the perfect complement to postpartum care• How sustainable systems can prevent burnout for doulas and sleep consultants• What expanding your services can mean for both your income and your energy
The truth is, postpartum care often ends right when families need continued guidance the most. Sleep consulting fills that gap. It extends support beyond the newborn phase, strengthens relationships, and positions you as a long term resource instead of a short term solution.
If you are a doula or newborn care specialist thinking about how to grow, diversify, or prevent burnout in your business… this episode will give you a lot to think about.

From NICU Mom to Sleep Consultant with Kenyon Gatlin
2026/10/13
This week on the Becoming a Sleep Consultant podcast, I'm chatting with CPSM graduate Kenyon Gatlin, a NICU mom who turned her own life-changing experience with sleep training into a career supporting other families.
Kenyon's daughter spent 59 days in the NICU and came home with a feeding tube, airway complications, and a long list of medical appointments and therapies. When Kenyon eventually decided to work on her daughter's sleep, she had to approach things differently, with guidance from her medical team and modifications to accommodate her daughter's needs.
That experience shaped so much of how Kenyon supports families today, especially those with medically complex children. She understands firsthand that healthy sleep habits don't require a perfectly controlled schedule, and that families can make meaningful progress even when life is complicated and unpredictable.
We also talked about Kenyon's first year in business, during which she's supported approximately 40 families! She shares how she went from trying all sorts of marketing strategies to building relationships with local professionals, getting out into her community, and developing a steady stream of referrals.
One of my favorite parts of our conversation was hearing Kenyon reflect on how much she's grown personally since starting her business. She was caring for a medically complex baby, navigating a cross-country move, and trying to figure out how to build something of her own. She didn't exactly have an abundance of free time, but she was determined to make it work.
I think so many of you will relate to Kenyon's story, whether you're already running a sleep consulting business or you're still trying to figure out how to make space in your life for something new.

How Sleep Consulting Made Me a Better Doula with Meg Wysong
2026/10/06
Meg enrolled in Center for Pediatric Sleep Management because she wanted to be a better postpartum doula. Sleep was coming up constantly with the families she was supporting, and she wanted to feel equipped to answer their questions and get them longer stretches of sleep.
Families are hiring Meg because of this specialized skillset. She is setting herself apart from others in the field.
Meg knew that becoming a sleep consultant would be great for her postpartum clients. What she didn't expect was how big a part of her business sleep would become. Meg is now working with families well beyond the newborn stage, supporting sleep clients both virtually and in person. As she looks ahead to 2027, she's planning to scale back some of her overnights and lean even more into sleep.
In this episode of the Becoming a Sleep Consultant podcast, Meg and I talk about how sleep consulting has helped her stand out as a doula, what it looks like for her to juggle in person and virtual support, and why she is leaning into sleep consulting as she continues to grow her business.

Is There Really Room for One More Sleep Consultant with Jayne Havens
2026/09/29
IS THERE REALLY ROOM FOR ONE MORE SLEEP CONSULTANT?
This question lands in my DMs almost every week. Aspiring sleep consultants see how many people are already doing this work and wonder why any family would choose them.
I get it. But I don't think that question is really about the market. It's about self-doubt, and wondering whether you can be successful in this field.
When I started, I just wanted to help families and earn a little extra money. Within a year, I was having $10k months. Nine years later, my consulting business is busier than ever.
Parents aren't choosing their sleep consultant from a database. They're choosing a person. And nobody else can be you.
In this week's episode, I'm sharing why this market isn't anywhere close to saturated, and why it wouldn't matter even if it were.

Doing the Work Without Being Attached to the Results with Sindy Warren
2026/09/22
One of the hardest parts of building a business is learning how to care deeply about the work without letting every single result determine how you feel about yourself.
This week, Sindy Warren is back on the Becoming a Sleep Consultant podcast to talk about doing the work without being overly attached to the results.
We talked about the incredibly high highs and low lows that come with building a business, and how, with time and practice, we can learn not to be rocked quite so hard by either.
Because two people can have the exact same experience and see it completely differently:
“I've been in business for six months and I've already had six clients!”
“I've been in business for six months and I've only had six clients.”
Same result. Completely different mindset.
This conversation is about learning to hold the outcomes a little more lightly, while continuing to show up, learn, pivot when necessary, and do the work that's ours to do.

Leaving Teaching to Go All In on Sleep Consulting with Kate Faraci
2026/09/15
Kate built her sleep consulting business while working full time as a teacher and raising three kids. For three years, she fit client calls into evenings and weekends, slowly growing her business while continuing to show up for her career and her family.
This year, after 20 years in education, Kate decided she was ready to bet on herself and take her sleep consulting business full time.
I really loved our conversation about what it took to get her to this point. We talked about the confidence that came from supporting more than 100 families, the challenge of walking away from a steady paycheck, and how strange it can feel to leave a career that has been part of your identity for so long.
But mostly, I loved hearing how excited she is!
There’s uncertainty in making a change this big, but Kate isn’t dwelling on that. She’s focused on how much she loves supporting families, how hard she’s willing to work for the business she wants, and how exciting it feels to finally have the time to give her business her full attention.

Drumming Up Business at the Airport with Jayne Havens
2026/09/08
Sometimes growing a business is just really freaking fun.
Last week, I took a discovery call from the airport while waiting for my flight to Florida. A woman sitting two seats down overheard my conversation, and what happened next was pretty magical.
One totally random interaction turned into new connections, new leads, and a really good reminder that you never know where your next opportunity is going to come from.
Growing a business isn’t always about having the perfect marketing strategy. Sometimes it’s simply about showing up, talking about what you do, and letting people see you shine.
This week on the Becoming a Sleep Consultant podcast, I’m sharing the whole story.
You really never know who’s listening.

From Career Nanny to Full Time Sleep Consultant with Kari Mahady
2026/09/01
There’s a big difference between wanting a successful sleep consulting business and actually building one.
Kari spent more than 20 years working as a nanny before deciding she wanted something different. She loved working with babies and families, but she wanted more flexibility, and the ability to work entirely from home.
So she got certified as a sleep consultant and got to work.
For Kari, that meant putting herself out there in ways that didn’t always feel natural or comfortable. She reached out to pediatricians and other perinatal professionals, booked meetings that made her nervous, and spent hours making connections and building relationships. She worked tirelessly to market herself before the referrals were coming in and trusted that the effort would eventually pay off.
And it did.
Somewhere along the way, Kari gained confidence in herself and in the value of the experience she already had. Tasks that once felt intimidating became easier simply because she kept doing them over and over again.
In this episode of Becoming a Sleep Consultant, we talk about what it took for Kari to turn the career she imagined into the career she can be proud of. She's ahead of schedule!

Trusting the Slow Build with Caralyn Hemphill
2026/08/25
There’s a really uncomfortable stage of building a business where you’re doing the work, putting yourself out there, and wondering when it's going to click.
For Caralyn, that stage lasted a while.
She graduated from CPSM, worked with a few families pro bono, and then went almost a year before booking her first paying client.
From there, things grew slowly. One client here. Another client there. Enough to gain experience and build her confidence, but not necessarily enough to feel like she had real momentum.
And then this month, she booked five paying clients!
In this episode of Becoming a Sleep Consultant, Caralyn and I talk about what it feels like to build a business slowly, the temptation to compare your progress to everyone else’s, and the confidence that only comes from actually doing the work.
Sometimes growth happens little by little, and then all at once.
I loved this conversation, and I think it will be especially encouraging for anyone who is still waiting for momentum to build.

Winners Look to Solve Problems with Jayne Havens
2026/08/11
In the dining hall at my sleepaway camp, there was a banner for all to read:
"Winners look to solve problems. Losers look for excuses."
The wording may be a bit cringe, but after reading that banner three times a day, for eight weeks every summer, for seven summers, I walked away with an important lesson.
Of course I don't think that people are literally winners or losers.
What I took away was much simpler: when something doesn't go according to plan, you can choose to make excuses, or you can decide to go and find a solution.
I hope you enjoy this solo episode.

Nurture Nap Network Retreat 2026 Recap
2026/08/04
One of the biggest lessons from this year's Nurture Nap Network Retreat had nothing to do with marketing, networking, or communication.
It was the reminder that entrepreneurship was never meant to be done alone.
When you spend your days working from home, supporting clients through a screen, and building a business that most of the people around you don't fully understand, it's easy to start believing you're the only one figuring it out as you go.
Then you put 24 people in a room who do understand.
Suddenly, the things that hard don't feel quite so impossible anymore. You leave with fresh ideas, renewed confidence, and the reminder that you're surrounded by people who genuinely want to see you succeed.
My favorite moments weren't necessarily the sessions themselves. They were the conversations over coffee before the day began. The hugs between people meeting in person after years of supporting one another online. Watching experienced business owners openly share what was working in their businesses, knowing there was enough success to go around.
That's the kind of community I always hoped to build.
In this episode, Kerri and I reflect on everything we took away from our second annual retreat, but more than anything, we talk about the power of genuine connection, and why getting into a room with people who truly understand your journey can change the way you see your business.

How to Stop Wasting Time in Canva with Brenda Cadman
2026/07/28
This week on the Becoming a sleep Consultant podcast, I'm joined by Canva Verified Expert Brenda Cadman for a conversation that every sleep consultant who uses Canva needs to hear.
If you've ever spent way too much time looking for a file, recreated something because you couldn't find the original, or wondered if there was a better way to keep your Canva organized, this episode is for you.
We discussed:• Simple ways to organize your files without overcomplicating your systems.• Whether Canva Pro is worth the investment.• Our thoughts on Canva's AI features and where AI is actually helpful (and where it isn't).• Small changes that will save you time every time you open Canva.
One of my biggest takeaways from this conversation was that your Canva organization system doesn't have to look like anyone else's. The best system is the one that works for you and your business.

Motherhood, Ambition, and Defining Success with Joan Lunden
2026/07/14
When I interviewed Joan Lunden live on stage in Baltimore a few months ago, I never expected our backstage conversation would lead to this podcast episode.
As we chatted before taking the stage, I shared a bit about my work as a sleep consultant, my online sleep consultant certification program, and of course this podcast. To my surprise, she asked if she could be a guest.
Needless to say, I didn't hesitate to say yes.
Joan has spent decades in the public eye, but what I was most interested in wasn't her career highlights. I wanted to hear what it was really like to build an ambitious career while raising six children, long before there was much of a roadmap for working mothers.
In this conversation, we talk about:• Navigating the judgment that often comes with making unconventional career choices• Why women shouldn't feel like they have to choose between meaningful work and motherhood• How Joan has defined success at different stages of her life and career• Why leading with service ultimately creates the greatest impact
While Joan's career may have looked very different from ours, I think you'll find that many of the questions she wrestled with are the same ones women are still asking today.
Is it okay to love motherhood and still want something that's just yours?
Can you build a meaningful career without sacrificing your family?
How do you define success when you're trying to balance it all?
I hope you enjoy my conversation with Joan Lunden.
