S5E13 Vampire Sex Party w/ Blood for Dracula (1974) & Vampire Circus (72)
2026/10/20
Halloween is almost upon us so we are talking vampire sex flicks of the 70s with author Anthony Lee Head. Tony's new novel, QUINCEY MORRIS AND THE HUNT FOR DRACULA retells Bram Stoker's classic vampire tale from the POV of the Bowie-knife-wielding Texan who joins Van Helping's hunt for the Transylvanian bloodsucker. So to get you ready for Halloween and celebrate Tony's book, we are pairing pot with with Udo Kier in BLOOD FOR DRACULA aka ANDY WARHOL'S DRACULA from 1974, and the hallucinatory weirdness of Hammer's VAMPIRE CIRCUS (1972) featuring David Prowse and Adrienne Corri, both from A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, but everyone knows Prowse as Darth Vader. Blood will be drunk and breasts are bared in these 70s flicks that showed vampires as sexy as you always knew they were. Bob and Tony also talk a little bit about THE SEARCHERS (1956), which is probably long overdue on this podcast, and they do get into some martial arts talk since Tony is Bob's former jiujitsu sensei. Greg, Cory and Philena are all on assignment, so it's just Bob and Tony talking cowboys and vampires. Tony's book, BLOODBOUND: QUINCEY MORRIS AND THE HUNT FOR DRACULA is available from Crystal Lake Publishing and you can buy it through Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GX372R4B?tag=crystallakepu-20&th=1&psc=1&geniuslink=true Be back here in NOIRVEMBER for some DARK CITY DIVAS! S5E12 The Devils: A New Legacy
2026/10/06
Ken Russell's masterpiece of blasphemy THE DEVILS is coming to a multiplex near you on October 15th! Since Warner Bros. in their death throes is re-releasing THE DEVILS with newly added sacrilege, we are re-releasing our segment on THE DEVILS from 2024 with new material. Unlike Warner Clockwork however, we didn't restore anything. Cory's audio is still, well, subpar. (Damned direct boxes!) Cory, Bob and Greg sit down to discuss the shocking reissue and spend a good chunk of the new intro talking about SPACE JAM 2--I mean, SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY, and if LeBron James had a role in slamming THE DEVILS into wide-release. We also rate THE DEVILS and LOS LEPROSOS Y EL SEXO (1970) with https://popcornhighs.com, the movie website for stoners. It's like letterboxd built with Leafly DNA. Check it out. Co-hosts: Bob Calhoun, Greg Franklin & Cory Sklar Philena Franklin went back to college Join us in 2 weeks when Bob sits down with Anthony Lee Head, author of BLOODBOUND: QUINCEY MORRIS AND THE HUNT FOR DRACULA to talk VAMPIRE SEX FIENDS OF THE 1970s with BLOOD FOR DRACULA (1974) and VAMPIRE CIRCUS (1972). S5E11 Santo Y Curry w/ Lepers & Sex (``1970), Pteryphlegia (1986), & Times Square (1980)
2026/09/21
The San Francisco Film Preserve is bringing the Re:Vision Film Festival to the Roxie Theater in San Francisco from September 24-27, so we've got a preview of their most bizarre double bill + we're paying tribute to the great Tim Curry with his most punk movie ever. First, Re:Vision is bringing a restored print of an El Santo sex film to the Roxie with LOS LEPROSOS Y EL SEXO aka LEPERS AND SEX an extreme oddity from 1970 where Calderon Studios took a lucha libre western and added softcore sex scenes to it for International audiences. It's hard to believe that the movie isn't just an urban legend, but an original negative was discovered in the mid-2010s and restored to all its sleazy glory by Cinema Preservation Alliance and Permanencia Voluntaria in 2022. Known without the sex scenes as SANTO VS. THE RIDERS OF TERROR, this version has escaped lepers terrorizing a small town and breaking in on any couples who are getting it on, and only the masked wrestling legend EL SANTO can restore justice and order! Directed by Mexican exploitation maestro René Cardona, who also baffled audiences with SANTA CLAUS (1959), which we featured in last year's Christmas episode. LOS LEPROSOS Y EL SEXO screens at the Roxie on Saturday, Sept. 29th at 9 p.m. with Pteryphlegia (1986), a sci-fi short from the Netherlands featuring the prog rock sounds of YES, and lucky for you, we have YES obsessive and Greg's cousin Darren Norris to parse all the needle drops. Find out how to buy tickets at the Roxie's website here: https://roxie.com/film/revision-lepers-sex-aka-santo-vs-the-riders-of-terror/ And find out more about the SF Film Preserve and Re:Vision here: https://filmpreserve.org/revision/ And then, the great Tim Curry left us on August 25th, so we're paying tribute to him with TIMES SQUARE, a punk rock drama with a mostly banger soundtrack set in the sleaze of pre-Disneyfied New York in 1980. Robin Johnson and Trini Alvarado are troubled teens who escape from a mental hospital and start a new wave rebellion and Curry is the sleazy DJ who seeks to exploit them. Directed by Allan Moyle (EMPIRE RECORDS) and featuring the music of The Ramones, Talking Heads, The Pretenders, Gary Neuman, The Cars, and Robin Gibb (!). Yes, Robin Gibb. Good thing Cory and Darren can music geek out and make sense of all this. TIMES SQUARE is part of the Criterion Channel's awesome Girl Bands! collection. Hosts: Cory Sklar, Bob Calhoun, and Darren Norris Greg Franklin was at a screening of his award-winning animated short THE WHISTLE and Philena went back to college! We'll get her back after finals. S5E10 Stoners vs. Acme: Greg Talks Looney Tunes
2026/09/02
COYOTE VS. ACME has crushed the box office, or at least exceeded expectations, so GREG FRANKLIN returns to the podcast that he co-created to talk LOONEY TUNES with Bob for this special "mini" episode, which turns out to be our second longest episode ever. It is the MY DINNER WITH ANDRE of OMFYS episodes. Just two dudes talking, and talking and talking. But hey, Cory always tells Bob that "people like long podcasts," so here we are. In a world of super hero fanboys, Greg is a funny animal guy, and he's an award-winning animator and co-founder of Six Point Harness Studios, so you're getting an expert opinion here. In planning this episode, Greg said, "I can Looney Tunes for hours," and he proves it right here with in-depth analysis of the works of Chuck Jones, Bob Clapmpett, Friz Freling, Carl Stalling and Mel Blanc, just to name a few. Here is a list of the cartoons discussed by Greg and Bob in this epic episode with the Tubi season and episode numbers, so you can find them more easily. Tubi bundles each short into "episodes" consisting of three cartoons, so these might not be the first Looney Tune in each episode, but they're in there... Somewhere. S09:E07 - The Great Piggy Bank Robbery (1946). Bob Clampett S01:E04 - The Night of the Living Duck S07:E15 - The Scarlet Pumpernickel S09:E02 - The Big Snooze (1946). Clampett/Arthur Davis S10:E06 - Falling Hare (1943) S13:E09 - Book Revue (1946). Clampett S10:E01 - Wackiki Wabbit (1943). Jones S04:E12 - There They Go-Go-Go (1956). Jones S04:E20 - One Froggy Evening (1955). Chuck Jones S04:E17 - To Hare Is Human (1956). Jones S05:E01 - Double or Mutton (1955). Jones S04:E05 - Three Little Bops (1957). Freling S04:E06 - Birds Anonymous (1957). Friz Freling S08:E03 - French Rarebit (1951) S09:E11 - Draftee Daffy (1945). Clampett S08:E20 - Easter Yeggs (1947). McKimson S10:E18 - Eatin' on the Cuff (1942). Clampett S10:E12 - The Dover Boys (1942). Jones S06:E12 - Water, Water Every Hare (1952). Chuck Jones S08:E20 - Birth of a Notion (1947). McKimson/Clampett S09:E07 - Hair-Raising Hare (46). Jones P.S. We owe Hell on Frisco Bay a Roxie Theater gift certificate if he actually adds all of these tunes to our Letterbxd page. (Thanks Brian!) S5E9 Visions of Africa w/ Touki Bouki (1973) & The Long Ships (64)
2026/08/18
Associate producer of DAUGHTERS OF THE DUST (1991) and legendary film programmer FLOYD WEBB is back on the podcast with a pair of movies set in Africa, but only one of them is filmed there. It shouldn't be too hard to guess which one. First, Mory and Anta, a pair of young lovers dream of leaving the dusty streets of Dakar in Senegal for their fantasies of Paris in TOUKI BOUKI (1973). Director Djibril Diop Mambéty's visual masterpiece starts out hyper realistic but becomes more hallucinatory as Mory and Anta plan their escape. Emergency guest host Darren Norris says that it feels like somebody is telling you their dream. The image of Mory and Anta riding on a motorcycle with a zebu steer skull attached to the handlebars was recreated by Beyoncé and Jay-Z to promote their 2018 world tour and the movie was named the 66th greatest film of all time on Sight and Sound's Critic's Poll in 2022. Streaming on Criterion and HBOMax. Then Richard Widmark is a Viking conman and Sidney Poitier is a Moorish King and their both after "The Mother of All Voices," a bell made with half of the gold in all the world, in THE LONG SHIPS (1964), an historical epic that's a little heavy on the cheese while being groundbreaking in actually having a Black person portray the ruler of an empire. Directed by Jack Cardiff, the master of Technicolor who was the director of photography of Powell and Pressberger's visual feasts THE RED SHOES (1948), A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH (46), and BLACK NARCISSUS (47) along with John Huston's THE AFRICAN QUEEN (51). Hey, he also shot Rambo and Conan sequels in the 80s. Also starring Russ Tamblyn in Viking hotpants and Rosanna Schiaffino in the outfit that inspired Princess Leia's geddup from RETURN OF THE JEDI. Streaming on tubi. Philena couldn't make it becasue she can't deal with the animal snuff no matter how artfully filmed the graphic slaughter of goats and steers may be, and her dad Greg is on assignment, but so they sent their cousin DARREN NORRIS from the CULTURAL FUTURES EXCHANGE podcast as an emergency guest host! Thanks Darren! CULTURAL FUTURES EXCHANGE does deep dives into pop culture artifacts. Darren and his co-host Jeff recently did a two part episode on the PHANTASM film series that you can listen to pay tribute to REGGIE BANNISTER, everyone's favorite undead-fighting icecream man from all five Phantasm films. S5E8 Mythical Odysseys w/ Jason and the Argonauts (63) & Hercules in the Haunted World (61)
2026/07/20
Christopher Nolan's THE ODYSSEY crushed it at the box office this weekend, but this is far from the first film to bring the Greek myths to life on the big screen. While Cory maintains that Nolan ain't stoney, we found some myth movies that are! Plus we've got cannabis comic and mythology nerd Ngaio Bealum to find the right strains to send you on your very own quest for the Golden Fleece. There is really no other movie we should begin with but this one. It's peak Ray Harryhausen with JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS from 1963. Harryhausen brings us the giant Talos, winged-harpies, the seven-headed Hydra AND the skeleton battle that may be the stop motion wizard's greatest achievement. Streaming on Tubi and Roku Channel (although Ngaio warns that the commercial breaks on Roku are "abrupt.") Then, horror maestro Mario Bava drags our beloved demigod Hercules straight to hell in HERCULES IN THE HAUNTED WORLD (1961) aka HERCULES AT THE CENTER OF THE EARTH (UK version). This entry in Italy's sword and sandal cycle from the early 60s is "totally metal" according to Cory, and it's Bava so it has freaky wraiths rising from the tombs of Hades and trees that bleed bright red Hammer horror blood. English body builder Reg Park is Hercules and Dracula himself CHRISTOPHER LEE is the vampire sorcerer who opposes him. The U.S. version with trippy Filmation credits sequence is on Pluto (appropriately); the UK version is on YouTube; and the Italian cut with subtitles is on Prime. Take your pick. As always, we begin by digressing with talk of rock shows and rock clubs we have loved, plus what to partake in before Nolan's three hour ODYSSEY and LISTENER MAIL! Please write to us at [email protected]. We love getting mail! Hosts: Cory Sklar, Ngaio Bealum and Bob Calhoun Greg and Philena are on assignment. S5E7 The PhilenApocalypse IV: Doomsday w/ The People's Joker (2022) & Sky High (2005)
2026/06/15
The PhilenApocalypse is back and this time cannabis comic Ngaio Bealum is here to witness it! This year Philena takes a swipe at super heroes just as their box office fortunes are starting to wane. Her first pick puts the trans in transgressive as trans femme comedian Vera Drew violates all manner of copyrights with THE PEOPLE'S JOKER (2022), a stinging satire of Batman and stand-up comedy wrapped in a surprisingly personal coming-of-age tale. It'll all make sense if you just watch it on Tubi, but not before getting your strain recs from Ngaio and Philena. And then Philena goes a little more mainstream with SKY HIGH (2005), a live-action Disney comedy about a high school for superheroes that is floating in the clouds. Philena thought this was something she dreamed up until rediscovering it recently. It does exist! The movie has one of the most loaded casts ever with Kurt Russell, Kelly Preston, Bruce Campbell (!), Lynda Carter (!!), Chloris Leachman (!!!), Mary Elizabeth Winstead + Dave Foley and Kevin McDonald from "The Kids in the Hall"!!! Even with Philena controlling the horizontal and the vertical, she has to endure Ngaio and Bob descending into fanboy talk as they go way too deep into Legion of Super Heroes lore for a while, but Philena was fascinated by the tragic tale of Triplicate Girl and Duo Damsel at least. SKY HIGH is streaming on Disney+. Philena, Ngaio and Bob also discuss the zero-budget hit horror movies BACK ROOMS and OBSESSION. Are the Zoomer YouTubers taking over Hollywood, or is everyone is just sick of super heroes and STAR WARS??? The OMFYS trio entertain and inform as they grasp at answers. You can now hear Ngaio on CROSS-POLINATION, a 2-hour showcase of great music and comedy every Tuesday from 10am to Noon on Sacramento's KUTZ 95.7 FM. You can listen on the web at https://www.kutzfm.org. Hosts: Philena Franklin & Bob Calhoun. Cory Sklar & Greg Franklin are on assignment. S5E6 Grave Robbers from Hollywood w/ Plan 9 from Outer Space (1958)
2026/05/26
They are bringing Val Kilmer back from the grave using AI to star in a crappy western, but Ed Wood brought Bela Lugosi back to life with some unused footage and an unconvincing double way back in the 50s! Without the use of computers even! The pending wave of AI movie star resurrections has Philena and Bob talking PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE (1958) in this emergency mini-episode mostly because Bob had a rant about it and didn't want it to go to waste. Philena and Bob also discuss the diva-on-diva beef between VAMPIRA and ELVIRA! Why can't we all just get along? Plus lots of Criswell, Tor Johnson and flying saucers over Hollywood! CAN YOU PROVE IT DIDN'T HAPPEN??? We also discuss the other dead movie star resurrections, such as GAME OF DEATH (1978), THE CROW (1994) and GLADIATOR (2000). And Philena talks about her near appearance in INCREDIBLY STRANGE WRESTLING before she was even born!!! S5E5 Cory's Punk ep. feat. Marc Edward Heuck w/ ..Fabulous Stains (82) & Forbidden Zone (80)
2026/05/06
Cory usually brings the funk, but today he's got the punk with a pair of movies that warped his young mind way back in the 80s. And he's also brining along film historian and commentary track superstar Marc Edward Heuck in an episode we call CORY'S PUNK ROCK AND SHOCK TIL YOU DROP! (Or at least that's what Bob called it when he hyped it in our last episode.) Cory's first pick is LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE FABULOUS STAINS (1982--kinda), a movie most of us discovered on USA Network's glorious NIGHT FLIGHT in the mid-80s. This movie about a defiant girl punk band getting out of their s****y mill town inspired L7 and Bikini Kill to start bands, and even Jon Bon Jovi cites it as an influence. JBJ notwithstanding, our world would be a crappier place without it. Marc contributed two commentary tracks to the excellent new Fun City Editions 4K UHD and Blu-ray release so he will tell you all about the movie that Paramount could not keep down. Then, the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo capture their crazed stage show in the surreal PHANTOM ZONE (1980). And if that wasn't enough, they added Hervé Villechaize and Susan Tyrrell as the king and queen to make it even weirder. Streaming on Roku, Tubi, Plex and more. In the intro segment, Marc tells us what it's like to record commentary tracks, Bob talks about the wonders of digital broadcast with all the MeTVs there, and Cory and Philena extol the virtues of low-budget TV jingles. S5E4 Roger Corman 420 with Gas-s-s-s (1970)
2026/04/20
Roger Corman was born 100 years ago this month so to celebrate his centennial and 420, Greg and Bob pair pot with GAS-S-S-S (1970), Corman's hippy-dippy post-apocalyptic stoner comedy. It's definitely one of Roger's stoniest movies, if not quite his best. A doddering US senator unwittingly releases a bio-weapon that kills everyone over 25. With that premise, Peter Fonda, Bruce Dern and Dennis Hopper had aged out so we get Bud Cort (RIP), Cindy Williams, Ben Vereen (who is on fire in this), and Talia Shire (then billed as Tally Coppola). They're like the Muppet Babies of AIP druggie flicks. With dirty psychedelic rock by Country Joe (RIP) and the Fish--the second film on this podcast to feature them and their music. Barry "The Fish" Melton kicks ass. Bob also talks about seeing the 4K restoration of Micheal Mann's THEIF (1981) at the Roxie in SF with the sound cranked way up. It's a good thing. And Greg gives us an update on his record room + why do people watch podcasts with aging men sitting around in shorts? What's the appeal? Hell if we know. Hosts: Greg Franklin and Bob Calhoun. Philena Franklin and Cory Sklar are on assignment. NEXT EPISODE: Cory's Punk Rock and Shock Til You Drop with LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE FABULOUS STAINS (1982) and FORBIDDEN ZONE (1980) featuring special guest star writer, producer and movie geek extraordinaire Marc Edward Heuck. S5E3 AP Mike's Herzog-A-Mania w/ Aguirre Wrath of God (1972) & Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe (80)
2026/03/31
Mike Lisk AKA AP Mike of THE BEST SHOW joins us once again and this time he's bringing Werner Herzog with him for AP MIKE'S HERZOG-A-MANIA!!! Mike first suggested doing a Herzog episode way back in our Noirvember 2024 episode (S3E15), but it took us over a year to get our most popular guest to discuss a German filmmaker so popular that he is now a meme--or even several of them. Rather than mine some obscure corner of Herzog's filmography--and there's a lot to mine--Mike goes straight for the heart (of darkness) with AGUIRRE WRATH OF GOD (1972)--the stoniest movie possible with Germans playing Spanish conquistadors and totally losing their shit both onscreen and IRL. In the title role we've got KLAUS KINSKI, a thoroughly terrible human being with an amazing face that is hard not to be captivated by--especially when you've been vaping Glitter Bomb with your new DaVinci EQ vaporizer all day. Look, the guy's been dead since 1991. We just want to enjoy the bastard's art. We don't want to make him Secretary of Health and Human Services or anything. And then to lighten things up, Cory chooses Les Blank's short film WERNER HERZOG EATS HIS SHOE (1980). And SPOILER: Werner Herzog does eat his shoe, although it was simmered in duck fat and hot sauce by the legendary Alice Waters of Chez Panisse in Berkeley not that helped very much. Werner ate his shoe as part of a bet with Errol Morris, so we also talk a bit about Morris's GATES OF HEAVEN (1978) but not so much that we can't feature that masterpiece in a future episode. Both Herzog movies and GATES OF HEAVEN are on Criterion Channel + AGUIRRE is also streaming on Fandor, Tubi, Pluto, Roku, and whole bunch of other places. BREAKING: AP Mike also tells us how he got kicked off of Facebook and Instagram for "selling drugs," and he gives us the lowdown on his new Patreon BEER BUDDIES where he and Tom Scharpling drink terrible beer. Plus we speculate on the end of social media, and Bob pays tribute some really cool friends who died recently. You can follow Mike Lisk on X (his only social media outlet) at @APMike, and please check out his new Patreon show BEER BUDDIES: https://www.patreon.com/collection/2054068?view=expanded Hosts: Bob Calhoun & Cory Sklar. OMFYS S5E2 Childhood Trauma w/ The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T (1953) & The Boy with Green Hair (47)
2026/03/10
Childhood trauma is everywhere in movies these days. You can find inner child work in Wicked and at least half the Pixar catalog. But we've always had it, only in the 1940s and 50s, it was all Freudian and weird. In our quest for trippy dream sequences, we pair weed with a pair of movies that probably traumatized kids as much as they entertained them. First, we have the only feature film written by Theodor Seuss Geisel AKA Dr. Seuss, THE 5,0000 FINGERS OF DR. T (1953) starring the amazing Hans Conried as a megalomaniacal piano teacher. It definitely delivers on Seuss-y dreaminess. And then, young Dean Stockwell is a war orphan who wakes up with green hair, and everyone in his town freaks the f-- out about it in, you guessed it, THE BOY WITH GREEN HAIR from RKO in 1947. Plus, Bob tries out the new DaVinci EQ Vaporizer and--spoiler--it's so good it made him like TRON ARES. Plus, are Zoomers buying DVDs? Philena has answers! We've also got the TikTok Report and what up Appleton, Wisconsin? #RaiseYourEQ to new frequencies. NEXT EPISODE: AP Mike returns for some EARLY HERZOG! S5E1 My Stoney Valentine w/ Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1968) and Victims of Sin (51)
2026/02/09
We are back for our FIFTH SEASON!!! Can you believe that we've been at this for five years now??? I know we can't, but we have 58 episodes where we've paired pot with 117 movies as evidence here. Our earliest film was Georges Méliès' "The Infernal Caudron" from 1903, and our most recent is "Hanky Panky" from 2023. That's getting up on three years old now? Does that count as vintage in tubi years? But enough of our unexpected achievements. We've got our 59th episode right here, and with Valentine's Day just around the corner, we're exploring human sexuality with a pair of films that Philena describes as "more gross than romantic." Everything about BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE (1969) screams the 60s, from Robert Culp in love beads right down to a Burt Bacharach song closing it out, but our crew found it's definitely worth a look as so many people are trying out polyamory with the same level of awkward as our film's titular couple. Plus Robert Culp and Natalie Wood smoke weed like pros Definitely stay tuned for Philena's title for a queer remake that she should really get crackin' on writing! The film also stars Ryan Cannon and Elliot Gould. How is it that Gould is making his Old Movies for Young Stoners debut just now??? BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE is streaming on the Criterion and Roku Channels. Since we featured one of Mexico's most spectacularly-bad films in our last episode with the baffling SANTA CLAUS (1959), Bob felt it was time we explored the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema (1930-1960) with VICTIMS OF SIN (1951), a prime example of the Rumberas genre, a unique combination of musical, noir and intense melodrama. In fact, the emotions may have burned a bit too hot for some of our hosts. Ninón Sevilla is a dancer at the Club Changoo in Mexico City whose life goes to hell after she rescues a baby from a trash can. Directed by the great Emilio Fernández who was the John Huston or Kurosawa of Mexico's Golden Age, but is best known to gringos for playing the Mexican warlord Mapache in Sam Peckinpah's THE WILD BUNCH (1969). Legend also has it that Fernández was the sculptor's model for the Oscar statuette when he was chilling with Dolores del Río in Hollywood after he was a part of a failed rebellion in Mexico and had to flee to the United States for a while. The contrast of light and shadows of Gabriel Figueroa's cinematography are the equal of anything seen in the best American noirs. VICTIMS OF SIN is now streaming on Criterion Channel. Cory, Bob and Greg begin the show by talking about the pending closures of The Bottom of the Hill and Thee Parkside, two San Francisco punk clubs that they have all played and see a lot of shows at. The conversation brings up the Canadian rock god Thor, which is always welcome. Bottom of the Hill closes at the end of 2026, so please check out a show or ten there while you still can. https://www.bottomofthehill.com/calendar.html And Philena was not one of the influencers invited to screenings of the "Wuthering Heights," which really seems like an oversight by the Warner Bros publicity team if you ask us. Hey movie PR people, contact us at [email protected] and invite Philena to your premieres! She's got the power! Join us in March for our CHILDHOOD TRAUMA episode with THE 5,000 FINGERS OF DR. T (1953) and THE BOY WITH GREEN HAIR (1948). Subscribe on your preferred podcast app so you don't miss it. Theme song: Chaki the Funk Wizard, used with permission. S4E12 Bonkers Holidaze Special w/ The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1910) & Santa Claus (1959)
2025/12/16
We're wishing stoners young and old out there a joyous Season's Greetings with our BONKERS HOLIDAZE SPECIAL. Philena still hasn't seen WICKED: FOR GOOD but we got more than enough witches and weirdness for her with THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ from 1910, a silent wonder which condenses Dorothy's entire journey into just 13 baffling minutes! What this early (but not first) version of THE WIZARD OF OZ lacks in coherence, it more than makes up for with stoniness. Glinda turns Toto into a strange dog-beast, and the flying monkeys are replaced with a bat-winged frog nightmare! We not only tell you what to smoke with this one but also what to put on your playlist while you enjoy the confusion. THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ is public domain so it's streaming on YouTube, Archive and even TikTok! And speaking of barely coherent, our main feature is SANTA CLAUS, a brain-melting oddity from Mexico in 1959 where Santa Claus and Merlin must stop a pantaloons-clad Devil from wrecking Christmas. If you put this fantasia on at your family holiday gathering instead of LOVE ACTUALLY or whatever the normies watch this time of year, grandma will feel like she's stoned even if she doesn't have a medical marijuana prescription. This psychiatric experiment was directed by René Cardona, who later gave us such gruesome classics as NIGHT OF THE BLOODY APES (1969) and the cannibalism epic SURVIVE! (1976). Another public domain gem, so it's streaming everywhere but the print that's on Tubi is the best. We suggest watching with a crowd, but if the male loneliness epidemic has you down, here's the MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 episode that Cory watched: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTWs3zvz1z4 We also talk about the Netflix merger with Warner Bros (but recorded it before the Ellisons got involved), the short-lived CASABLANCA TV series from the 80s, Greg watching BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS (1980) on his new mammoth 4K TV and ZOOTOPIA 2. Happy New Year's everybody and see you back in February 2026! S4E11 Noir City Dames feat. Eddie Muller w/ Out of the Past (1947) & 99 River Street (53)
2025/11/13
Noirvember is here and the Czar of Noir Eddie Muller is back on the podcast to talk about his new book, DARK CITY DAMES: THE WOMEN WHO DEFINED FILM NOIR along with two crime classics featuring FOUR of those Dark City Dames! First, Jane Greer uses her seductive wiles to pit private eye Robert Mitchum against domineering gangster Kirk Douglas in OUT OF THE PAST (1947), from director Jacques Tourneur (CAT PEOPLE). This movie is a stone cold classic, and not only of the best noirs, but one of the best movies ever. Rhonda Fleming is a bonus Dark City Dame in this one. OUT OF THE PAST is streaming on HBOMax. Then, our B picture takes us to "one of the worst waterfronts in the world" where John Payne is an ex-boxer-turned-cabbie caught between good girl Evelyn Keyes and femme fatale Peggie Castle during a night of frame-jobs, jewel heists and murder in 99 RIVER STREET (1953), a totally bonkers noir from director Phil Karlson (WALKING TALL). 99 RIVER STREET is streaming on Amazon Prime. In talking about his new book, Eddie regales us with tales of how Jane Greer's parrots imitated Vin Scully's homerun call, and Greer had some impressions of her own + his encounters with the other women he profiles such as Ann Savage (DETOUR) and Marie Windsor (THE KILLING). And if that wasn't enough, Eddie fills us in on the upcoming Noir City fest in Oakland and gives his thoughts on the new Vince Gilligan series PLURIBUS! Plus, this episode itself also has a bonus dark city dame with three-time Ms. Noir City Audra Wolfman joining us to make this the best Noirvember ever! Eddie's new book, DARK CITY DAMES, is available at Alibi Bookshop in Vallejo, Calif. and wherever you buy books. You can find more on Eddie at https://eddiemuller.com/ Hosts: Bob Calhoun, Cory Sklar, Greg Franklin, and Audra Wolfman Philena Franklin is on assignment OMFYS Theme and "Christmas Funk" by Chaki the Funk Wizard, used with permission.
