How Social Media Affects Your Life: Your Attention, Relationships & Money

We wake up with it, carry it with us throughout the day, and often fall asleep while scrolling through it. But have you ever stopped to ask yourself what all that screen time is actually doing to your life? In this episode of **Year of Profit**, Joe Shortridge takes a deeper look at how social media can influence our **mindset, attention, relationships, spending habits, and financial goals**. This isn't an episode about declaring social media good or bad. Social media can be an incredible tool. It can connect us with family and friends, help businesses grow, provide education and entertainment, and give people a platform to share their stories. The question is whether we're using social media intentionally—or whether it has started using our attention for us. One of the major topics discussed is **dopamine** and the reward system behind our scrolling habits. Notifications, likes, comments, new videos, and constantly changing content can create repeated opportunities for reward and anticipation. Joe explains how this can encourage us to keep checking our phones and how constant stimulation may make activities requiring patience and sustained attention feel less appealing. The episode also explores the impact of social media on **focus and productivity**. Every notification and interruption has the potential to pull our attention away from what we're doing. Whether you're working, building a business, managing your finances, reading, exercising, or spending time with your family, protecting your attention can make a significant difference. Another major topic is **comparison**. Social media often shows us other people's highlights while we experience every part of our own lives—the successes, failures, struggles, mistakes, and ordinary days. Comparing our reality to someone else's carefully selected online moments can create unrealistic expectations and unnecessary dissatisfaction. Joe also examines the relationship between social media and **money**. Advertising is everywhere, but modern advertising doesn't always look like advertising. Influencers, lifestyle posts, product recommendations, and targeted content can make spending feel natural and even necessary. Social media can encourage us to purchase things because we want the product—but sometimes we're really purchasing the feeling associated with it. The episode asks an important financial question: **Would you still want to buy it if nobody else could see it?** That question can help us distinguish between spending that supports our goals and spending driven by comparison, impulse, or the desire for validation. Relationships are another critical part of the conversation. Being physically present with someone doesn't necessarily mean we're emotionally present. Phones at the dinner table, during conversations, or while spending time with family can quietly take attention away from the people who matter most. Joe challenges listeners to create more **phone-free moments**, protect their attention, and become intentional about how they use technology. The episode concludes with a simple seven-day challenge: spend the first 30 minutes of each morning without social media, create at least one phone-free meal each day, wait 24 hours before making impulse purchases inspired by social media, and ask yourself each night where you gave your attention. Because your attention is valuable. Your time is limited. Your relationships matter. Your money matters. And ultimately, **your life is shaped by what you repeatedly give your attention to.** The goal isn't necessarily to eliminate social media. It's to make sure **you remain in control of it**. So put down the phone occasionally. Look around. Have the conversation. Work toward your goals. Check your budget. Spend time with the people you love. Don't just watch everybody else's life happen. **Go live yours.** Hosted by Joe Shortridge, The Year of Profit podcast is your ultimate destination for personal development, financial growth, and high-performance living. Family Boundaries: How to Love People Without Losing Yourself while building wealth

Family relationships can be some of the most rewarding relationships in our lives—but they can also be complicated. Parents, siblings, adult children, spouses, and extended family can all bring expectations, opinions, responsibilities, and sometimes emotional pressure into our lives. In this episode of Year of Profit, Joe Shortridge explores one of the most important relationship skills we can develop: setting healthy family boundaries. Inspired by the principles discussed by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend in their influential book Boundaries, this episode looks at what it means to understand where our responsibility ends and someone else's begins. A boundary isn't about building a wall around yourself. It isn't about being selfish, uncaring, or pushing people away. Healthy boundaries are about understanding what belongs to you—and what belongs to someone else. Your choices belong to you. Your time belongs to you. Your money belongs to you. Your emotions and your responses belong to you. But someone else's anger, disappointment, choices, and responsibilities don't automatically become yours simply because you love them. Joe discusses why saying "no" can be so difficult, especially when it comes to family. Many of us were raised to believe that saying no is disrespectful or that good family members should always be available to help. But constantly saying yes when you really want to say no can eventually lead to exhaustion, frustration, and resentment. This episode explores the difference between helping and rescuing, particularly when family members are struggling financially or repeatedly making decisions that create problems. Sometimes helping means offering guidance, encouragement, or support. Other times, continually stepping in may prevent someone from experiencing the consequences that could help them grow. Money is another major part of family boundaries. Should you loan money to family? Should you co-sign? Should you continually rescue an adult child from financial problems? How do you protect your own financial goals while still caring about the people you love? These aren't always easy questions, but they are important ones. Joe also discusses the unique challenges between parents and adult children. Becoming an adult means eventually learning to make your own decisions—even when your parents may disagree. You can respect your parents, appreciate their wisdom, and listen to their advice without allowing someone else's expectations to control your adult life. The same principle applies to parents of adult children. Loving your children doesn't mean you have to solve every problem they encounter. Sometimes allowing people to experience the natural consequences of their decisions is part of loving them. You'll also hear practical ideas for communicating boundaries, including being clear, avoiding unnecessary over-explaining, staying consistent, and learning to accept that other people may not always like your decisions. Perhaps the most important lesson in this episode is this: You can love someone without carrying their problems. You can care without rescuing. You can help without sacrificing your future. You can say no without being a bad person. And you can establish boundaries without ending a relationship. For Year of Profit, this conversation goes far beyond relationships. True profit isn't just about earning more money. It's about creating a life that produces more peace, freedom, time, healthy relationships, and purpose. So take a look at your own life and ask yourself: What is mine to carry—and what do I need to give back? Learning the answer could be one of the most profitable things you ever do.   Hosted by Joe Shortridge, The Year of Profit podcast is your ultimate destination for personal development, financial growth, and high-performance living. Day Trips in the Fall: Big Benefits from Small Escapes to save money and reenergize

Sometimes, all you need is a tank of gas, a free Saturday, and a willingness to take the road you don't normally take. In this episode of **The Year of Profit**, Joe Shortridge explores the surprisingly powerful benefits of taking **small escapes**, especially during one of the most beautiful seasons of the year: fall. As the leaves begin to change, the temperatures cool down, and communities come alive with festivals, farmers' markets, apple orchards, pumpkin patches, historic tours, and seasonal events, fall creates the perfect opportunity to step away from your normal routine and experience something different. And here's the important part: **you don't have to travel far or spend a lot of money to create a meaningful experience.** We often associate travel with expensive hotels, airline tickets, elaborate vacations, and weeks of planning. But a day trip can provide many of the same emotional benefits without putting a major dent in your budget. A short drive to a nearby town can become an adventure. A scenic drive can give you time to think. A visit to a local historical site can teach you something new. A walk through a park can clear your head. A meal at a restaurant you've never tried can become a memory. The destination doesn't always have to be extraordinary. Sometimes it's the experience of **getting out of your routine** that makes the difference. In this episode, Joe talks about how changing your surroundings can help interrupt the mental patterns that come from doing the same things day after day. When life becomes repetitive, it's easy to operate on autopilot. A small escape forces us to slow down, pay attention, and experience the world around us again. Day trips can also be powerful for relationships.   Think about the memories you share with the people closest to you. Chances are, you don't remember every ordinary night sitting on the couch. You remember the adventures. The unexpected discoveries. The funny things that happened. The places you found together. Experiences create stories, and stories create memories. Joe also looks at the financial side of taking a break. Living a financially responsible life doesn't mean you can never enjoy yourself. In fact, learning to enjoy life without overspending is an important part of financial wellness. You don't need to put a vacation on a credit card to have an adventure. Pack a lunch. Bring some snacks. Find free attractions. Explore local parks. Visit a small town. Take a scenic drive. Set aside a modest "adventure fund" and use it intentionally. The goal isn't to spend more. The goal is to **experience more with what you already have.** The episode also explores the importance of not waiting for the "perfect time." There will always be another bill, another responsibility, another project, and another reason to postpone enjoying life. Your life is happening now. That doesn't mean ignoring your responsibilities. It means understanding that rest, fun, exploration, and meaningful experiences are also part of a successful life. So this fall, Joe challenges listeners to take a day trip. Choose a destination—or simply choose a direction. Take the scenic route. Visit somewhere you've never been. Try something new. Bring someone you care about, or enjoy the adventure by yourself. Put down the phone for a while and pay attention to the world around you. Because sometimes you don't need a week-long vacation. You don't need a plane ticket. You don't need thousands of dollars. Sometimes you just need one day to step outside your routine and remember that there is a big world waiting just beyond it. **Small escapes can create big benefits.** They can refresh your mind, strengthen your relationships, spark creativity, reduce stress, create memories, and remind you that success isn't simply about how hard you work. It's also about knowing when to stop, breathe, and enjoy the life you're working so hard to build. So grab your keys, find a road you've never explored, and make this fall a season you'll remember. **The adventure might be closer than you think.** The Year of Profit podcast, hosted by Joe Shortridge, is your go-to resource for transforming every aspect of your life. In this episode of The Year of Profit, we take a completely different look at failure. Most of us were taught from an early age that failure is something to avoid. We associate failure with embarrassment, disappointment, lost money, rejection, and sometimes even shame. But what if the people who achieve the most aren't necessarily the people who fail the least? What if they are simply better at failing, learning, adapting, and moving forward? The concept of "Fail Fast Forward" is about changing your relationship with failure. Instead of allowing one mistake or setback to define you, you use it as information. You learn what didn't work, make adjustments, and get back into action. In this episode, we break that process down into five powerful steps to your future. First, we talk about stopping the habit of calling yourself a failure. There is a huge difference between saying, "I failed at something," and saying, "I am a failure." One describes an event. The other creates an identity. Your mistakes are things that happened to you or decisions you made—they don't have to become the definition of who you are. Second, we discuss the importance of performing a failure autopsy. Instead of ignoring your mistakes or obsessing over them, examine them honestly. What happened? What was under your control? What did you learn? What will you do differently next time? The goal isn't to live in the past. It's to take the lesson and move forward. Third, we explore the power of making small bets. You don't always have to risk everything to discover whether an idea will work. Test things. Experiment. Start small. Get feedback. Whether you're starting a business, writing a book, changing careers, improving your finances, or pursuing a personal goal, smaller experiments can help you learn faster while reducing the cost of being wrong. Fourth, we look at setting a deadline for recovery. Failure can hurt, and you're allowed to be disappointed. But you can't allow disappointment to become a permanent place to live. At some point, reflection needs to turn into action. You have to decide when you're going to get back up and take the next step. Finally, we talk about creating a future bigger than your failure. Your past deserves your attention long enough to learn from it—but your future deserves even more attention. The rearview mirror can show you where you've been, but you can't drive forward while staring backward. This episode is ultimately about resilience, personal growth, money, success, and taking action. You don't need to have everything figured out before you begin. You don't need a guarantee that you'll succeed. You need the willingness to learn, adapt, and continue. Your future doesn't require a perfect past. It requires movement. So if you've been afraid to try something because you're worried about failing, this episode is your reminder that failure doesn't have to stop you. Fail fast. Learn faster. Move forward. Your next chapter could be waiting on the other side of the mistake you're currently afraid to make. And remember: One failure is an event. It does not have to become your identity. Hosted by Joe Shortridge, The Year of Profit podcast is your ultimate destination for personal development, financial growth, and high-performance living. Success Is Hard, But Here Are the Steps to Make It Easier and biuld Wealth

Set a goal, work hard, stay focused, and eventually you get there. But anyone who has seriously tried to change their life knows the truth: **success can be hard.** Whether your goal is financial freedom, building a business, improving your health, paying off debt, becoming more confident, or simply creating a better life, there will be obstacles along the way. There will be days when motivation disappears, plans don't work, and quitting seems much easier than continuing. But what if success doesn't have to be quite as difficult as we make it? In this episode of **The Year of Profit**, we take a practical look at how to make the journey toward success easier, more manageable, and more sustainable. The first step is defining what success actually means to you. Too many people chase someone else's definition of success without ever asking what they really want. More money, a bigger house, a successful business, or a particular lifestyle may look impressive, but true success starts with knowing what matters to **you**. We also talk about why trying to change everything at once can actually keep you from changing anything. Instead of attempting a complete life transformation overnight, focus on one important improvement at a time. Small actions repeated consistently can eventually produce enormous results. Another important lesson is learning to make the right choices easier. Your environment matters. If you want to save money, make saving automatic. If you want to exercise, prepare ahead of time. If you want to write, create a dedicated time and place for it. The easier you make good habits, the more likely you are to repeat them. And then there's motivation Motivation feels great when you have it, but it isn't always dependable. Successful people don't wake up every morning excited to do everything they need to do. They develop discipline, routines, and habits that keep them moving even when motivation disappears. We also explore the importance of breaking enormous goals into small, manageable steps. Sometimes the size of a goal can intimidate us so much that we never begin. Instead of worrying about the entire journey, focus on the next step. Success is also about learning to appreciate **boring consistency**. Real progress isn't always exciting. Saving money, making smart decisions, exercising, learning, practicing, and showing up repeatedly may not create dramatic results overnight. But over time, consistency can change your life. We'll also talk about failure, comparison, energy management, tracking progress, finding supportive people, and why you shouldn't wait for the perfect plan before taking action. Most importantly, this episode is about becoming the person who keeps going. You don't have to be perfect. You don't have to have everything figured out. You don't have to completely transform your life tomorrow. You simply have to take the next step. Then another. Then another. Success may always require effort, but you can make the journey easier by making it simpler, clearer, and more consistent. So if you've been feeling overwhelmed by your goals or wondering why success seems so difficult, this episode is for you. **Stop trying to do everything at once. Stop waiting for perfect conditions. Stop comparing your journey to everyone else's.** Define your destination. Take the next step. Keep your promises to yourself. And keep moving forward. Because sometimes the difference between where you are and where you want to be isn't one giant breakthrough. **It's simply the decision to keep taking the next step.** Welcome to another episode of **The Year of Profit**.   Hosted by Joe Shortridge, The Year of Profit podcast is your ultimate destination for personal development, financial growth, and high-performance living. What would it feel like to know that the house you live in is completely paid for? On this episode of **The Year of Profit**, Joe Shortridge gets personal and shares his own journey through **Dave Ramsey's Baby Steps**—a journey that ultimately led to one of the biggest financial accomplishments of his life: **paying off his house**. This episode isn't about pretending that getting out of debt is easy. It isn't. It takes discipline, sacrifice, patience, and a willingness to change the way you think about money. But Joe's story proves something incredibly important: **financial freedom is possible.** Joe walks listeners through the principles behind the Baby Steps and explains how following a proven plan can help you take control of your money instead of allowing money to control you.   The journey starts with getting serious about your financial situation. That means knowing where your money is going, creating a plan, eliminating unnecessary spending, and making debt reduction a priority. Along the way, there are going to be setbacks, temptations, unexpected expenses, and plenty of moments when you wonder if it is really worth it. Joe knows those moments firsthand. But every payment matters. Every sacrifice matters. Every dollar you choose not to spend can move you closer to freedom. One of the biggest milestones in Joe's journey was becoming **100% debt free—including his house**. Paying off a mortgage isn't something that happens overnight. It takes years of consistent effort and the willingness to keep going even when the finish line seems far away. And that is one of the biggest lessons Joe wants listeners to take away from this episode. **You don't have to become financially free all at once. You just have to start.** Maybe your first goal is saving your first $1,000 emergency fund. Maybe you need to pay off a credit card. Maybe you have student loans, car payments, medical bills, or a mortgage that seems overwhelming. Whatever your situation, you can begin making progress today. Joe also talks about the mental side of becoming debt free. Paying off debt isn't just about numbers on a spreadsheet. It changes your mindset. It teaches you patience. It teaches you discipline. It teaches you to delay gratification and start thinking about your future instead of constantly spending money on the present. most importantly, Joe shares his story because he wants listeners to understand that **you don't have to be wealthy to build wealth**. You have to make a decision. You have to create a plan. And then you have to keep moving forward. The Baby Steps gave Joe a roadmap, but he still had to walk the road. Now, he wants to encourage you to walk yours. If Joe can work his way through the Baby Steps and pay off his house, **you can make progress too**. Your journey may look different. Your timeline may be different. Your income and circumstances may be different. But the goal remains the same: take control of your money, eliminate debt, build wealth, and create a future where your money gives you choices instead of limitations.   This episode of **The Year of Profit** is a reminder that financial freedom isn't just something that happens to other people. **It can happen to you.** Start where you are. Take the first step. Keep going. Your debt-free future may be closer than you think. Negotiating With Yourself – Strategies for Overcoming Internal Resistance

You make promises about what you're going to do, and then, somewhere along the way, your mind starts looking for a reason to change the deal. You tell yourself you'll exercise tomorrow. You'll save money next month. You'll start the business when you have more time. You'll finally pursue the dream when life settles down. But life rarely settles down. In this episode of **Year of Profit**, we explore one of the biggest obstacles standing between you and the life you want: **internal resistance**. Internal resistance is that voice inside your head that tells you to stay comfortable, avoid risk, delay action, and protect yourself from failure. It often sounds reasonable. It tells you that you're being practical when, in reality, you may simply be afraid to take the next step. We examine why the human mind naturally resists change and why comfort can become a trap. Your brain is designed to protect you from uncertainty, but the same instinct that keeps you safe can also keep you stuck. One of the most important lessons in this episode is learning to recognize the difference between **a suggestion and a decision**. When you say, "I'll exercise if I feel like it," you're making a suggestion. When you say, "I exercise because that's who I am," you've made a decision That difference matters. We also discuss the importance of keeping promises to yourself. Every time you follow through on a commitment, you build evidence that you can trust yourself. Every time you break a promise to yourself, you reinforce the belief that you don't follow through. The episode introduces practical strategies for overcoming resistance, including the **Five-Minute Rule**. Instead of demanding that you completely transform your life overnight, commit to taking action for just five minutes. Five minutes of exercise. Five minutes of writing. Five minutes of working on your business. Five minutes of organizing your finances. The goal isn't perfection. The goal is movement.   We also look at the questions you ask yourself. Your mind will search for answers to whatever questions you give it. Ask, "Why can't I succeed?" and you'll find reasons. Ask, "How can I make this happen?" and your brain begins searching for possibilities. Another powerful strategy is understanding the **cost of inaction**. What happens if you don't change? What does your life look like five years from now if you continue doing exactly what you're doing today? What opportunities might you miss? What dreams might remain unfinished? Sometimes the motivation to change comes not from imagining what you could gain, but from recognizing what staying the same could cost you. We also explore the importance of creating **non-negotiables**. When you establish clear standards for yourself, you eliminate countless daily decisions and reduce the opportunity to talk yourself out of what matters. Ultimately, success isn't about eliminating fear or discomfort. It's about becoming the person who can move forward despite them. Every difficult action you take creates evidence. Every workout, every dollar saved, every difficult conversation, every risk taken, and every promise kept tells your brain: **"I can count on myself."** That's how confidence is built. Your future isn't determined by the excuses you make today. It's determined by the decisions you make when your mind gives you every reason to quit. The next time you hear that voice telling you to wait, remember: **Don't negotiate away your dreams. Negotiate for your future.** Tune in to this powerful episode of *Year of Profit* and learn how to stop making deals with your excuses—and start making commitments to the person you want to become. The Person You Become Determines the Money You Make

It isn't. Your value as a person has nothing to do with your bank account. Instead, this episode focuses on the characteristics, habits, skills, discipline, mindset, and behaviors that can influence your ability to create and manage financial success. Most people ask, **"How can I make more money?"** Joe challenges you to ask a better question: **"Who do I need to become to make more money?"* That shift changes everything. Money generally follows value. The more problems you can solve, the more skills you develop, and the more value you can provide, the more opportunities you may create for yourself. Whether you're an employee, entrepreneur, salesperson, investor, or business owner, becoming more valuable can increase your earning potential But earning more money is only part of the equation. Joe also explores why someone can receive a raise and still remain financially stressed. Lifestyle inflation, emotional spending, poor financial habits, and a lack of discipline can prevent increased income from becoming increased wealth You don't simply need more money. **You need to become the person who knows what to do with more money.* The episode dives into the importance of developing a strong financial identity. Instead of saying, "I'm trying to save money," start thinking, **"I'm a person who saves money."** Instead of saying, "I'm trying to become successful," begin becoming the person who takes responsibility, follows through, learns, adapts, and keeps moving forward. Joe discusses why your habits matter, why discipline often beats motivation, why becoming a lifelong learner can increase your value, and why learning to solve problems can become one of your greatest financial advantages. You'll also hear about the importance of taking responsibility for what you can control. You may not control the economy, your employer, your past, or every circumstance in your life—but you can control what you learn, how you respond, the skills you develop, the decisions you make, and the actions you take next. The episode also challenges listeners to examine their environment. The people you spend time with, the information you consume, and the conversations you have about money can influence the way you think and behave. Becoming financially stronger often requires becoming more intentional about the influences surrounding you. Joe then introduces a **seven-day "Become the Person" challenge**, designed to turn the ideas from the episode into action. You'll be challenged to examine your finances, identify your biggest financial weakness, choose a valuable skill to develop, eliminate a financial leak, do something uncomfortable, define your future self, and make a commitment to take responsibility for what happens next.   Perhaps the most important message of the episode is that **you don't have to change your entire life overnight.** You can start with one decision. One habit. One skill. One action. One day at a time. Your past doesn't have to determine your future. Your current financial situation is information—not necessarily a permanent destination. If you want a different financial future, don't just focus on changing your bank account. **Change yourself.** Become more disciplined. Become more knowledgeable. Become more valuable. Become more courageous. Become more patient. Become a better problem solver. Become someone who finishes what they start. Become someone who keeps promises to themselves. Because the greatest investment you may ever make isn't a stock, business, piece of real estate, or bank account. **It's you.** Your future is being built by the person you are becoming today. So the question isn't simply, **"How much money do I want?"** The real question is: ### **"Who do I need to become?"* This is **The Year of Profit**. Now it's time to become the person your future requires. Float Therapy: The Power of Doing Nothing

In this episode of Year of Profit, Joe explores the fascinating world of float therapy and the surprising power of stepping away from the noise of everyday life. In a world filled with smartphones, notifications, social media, work, responsibilities, and constant stimulation, many of us rarely experience true quiet. Float therapy offers an opportunity to disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with ourselves. Joe begins by sharing his own personal experience with float therapy before exploring what happens when we enter an environment designed to dramatically reduce external stimulation. Float tanks, also known as sensory deprivation tanks or REST tanks, use highly concentrated Epsom salt water to create a buoyant environment where the body can float effortlessly. The water is typically maintained close to skin temperature, helping create an environment where the sensation of gravity, sound, and light can be significantly reduced. The episode takes a fascinating journey through the history of the float tank, beginning with the pioneering work of physician and neuroscientist Dr. John C. Lilly. In the 1950s, Lilly developed an isolation tank while researching the effects of sensory reduction on the human brain. His work helped establish the foundation for what would eventually become known as Restricted Environmental Stimulation Technique, or R.E.S.T. Joe also explores the intriguing historical connection between float tanks, altered states of consciousness, and the psychedelic movement. Figures such as John C. Lilly and Timothy Leary became associated with the exploration of consciousness, helping contribute to the float tank's reputation as a tool for deep introspection and inner exploration. While modern float therapy is primarily focused on wellness, relaxation, meditation, and stress management, the historical connection provides a fascinating look at humanity's ongoing curiosity about the mind. The conversation then turns to the potential mental benefits of floating. By reducing distractions and external stimulation, float therapy may provide an environment conducive to relaxation, mindfulness, reflection, and stress reduction. Joe discusses how floating may help people step away from the constant demands of modern life and create valuable space to simply think, breathe, and be present. The physical side of floating is also explored. The buoyancy of the salt water can reduce the sensation of weight and allow muscles and joints to relax. Joe discusses why float therapy has attracted interest from athletes and performance-minded individuals looking for ways to support recovery, relaxation, visualization, mental focus, and overall well-being. But this episode goes beyond float tanks. At the heart of this conversation is a powerful lesson about success and personal growth. Joe challenges the idea that productivity always means doing more. Sometimes, the smartest thing you can do is rest. Sometimes, you need to step away from the noise before you can clearly see your next move. Sometimes, you need to stop trying to solve every problem and simply give your mind the space to reset. In this episode, you'll discover why creating moments of quiet may be one of the most overlooked tools for personal growth, why recovery is an important part of success, and how learning to slow down can help you reconnect with the person you want to become. Whether you've experienced a float tank or you've never considered trying one, this episode will encourage you to find your own version of a "float tank"—a place or practice where you can disconnect from the noise and reconnect with yourself. Because your Year of Profit isn't just about making more money. It's about building a life worth living. It's about protecting your health, investing in your mind, creating freedom, and becoming the person you were meant to be. Sometimes, the next step forward doesn't begin by doing more. Sometimes... you just need to float. Hosted by Joe Shortridge, The Year of Profit podcast is your ultimate destination for personal development, financial growth, and high-performance living. Healing with Sound – Can Music and Frequencies Improve Your Well-Being

From ancient healing traditions to modern scientific research, we examine how music, vibration, and sound frequencies can influence our emotions, reduce stress, improve focus, and promote overall well-being.   For thousands of years, cultures around the world have used drums, chanting, singing bowls, gongs, flutes, and sacred music as part of healing rituals and spiritual practices. While these traditions were once viewed primarily through a cultural or spiritual lens, modern researchers are now studying how sound affects the brain, nervous system, and body. Although sound should not be viewed as a replacement for medical care, there is growing evidence that it can be a valuable complementary tool for relaxation, stress management, and emotional health.   During this episode, we discuss how the human brain responds to music and why certain songs instantly trigger memories and emotions. You'll learn about the connection between sound and the nervous system, including how calming music may help reduce cortisol—the body's primary stress hormone—while encouraging relaxation and emotional balance.   We also explore the concept of vibration and frequency. Everything around us exists in motion, including the electrical activity inside our brains. You'll hear about different brainwave states such as alpha, beta, theta, delta, and gamma waves, and how researchers continue to study their relationship to relaxation, focus, meditation, and sleep. We also introduce binaural beats, an audio technique that presents slightly different tones to each ear to create the perception of another frequency. While research is still evolving, many people report that binaural beats help them unwind, improve concentration, or prepare for restful sleep.   Another topic covered is music therapy, a well-established healthcare profession used in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and mental health settings. Certified music therapists work with patients facing challenges such as anxiety, depression, chronic pain, dementia, trauma, and serious illness. We discuss how music therapy differs from simply listening to music and why personalized musical experiences can have such a meaningful emotional impact.   Throughout the episode, you'll also hear practical ideas for creating your own sound-based wellness routine. Whether it's listening to instrumental music while working, nature sounds before bed, peaceful background music during meditation or prayer, or simply taking a few minutes each day to sit in silence, small intentional habits can help create moments of calm in an increasingly noisy world.   One of the most inspiring themes of this conversation is that healing doesn't always come from dramatic life changes. Sometimes it begins with something as simple as pressing play on a favorite song, spending a few quiet moments listening to the sounds of nature, or allowing music to help process difficult emotions. Sound has the unique ability to comfort us, motivate us, connect us with cherished memories, and remind us that we are never truly alone in our experiences.   If you've ever wondered why certain songs lift your mood, why music can bring tears to your eyes, or why relaxing sounds help you sleep more peacefully, this episode offers both scientific insight and practical inspiration. You'll leave with a deeper appreciation for the role sound plays in everyday life and several easy strategies you can begin using immediately to support your mental and emotional well-being.   Thank you for listening to **Year of Profit**. A profitable life also includes peace of mind, emotional resilience, strong relationships, and good health. Sometimes the path toward that life begins with something as simple—and as powerful—as sound. Music Therapy: How Sound Can Heal the Mind, Body, and Soul

It plays in our cars, our homes, our churches, our favorite restaurants, and through our headphones. But music is much more than entertainment. Science and personal experience continue to show that music has the power to heal, comfort, motivate, and even transform lives.   In this episode of the **Year of Profit Podcast**, we take a deep dive into the incredible world of **music therapy** and explore why certain songs can make us laugh, cry, remember, and even feel physically better.   Music therapy is the clinical use of music to improve a person's emotional, mental, and physical well-being. Certified music therapists use singing, listening to music, songwriting, and playing instruments to help people manage stress, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and even neurological conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and dementia.   One of the most fascinating things about music is how it affects the brain. Research has shown that listening to music can release dopamine, often called the "feel-good" chemical. Dopamine is associated with pleasure, motivation, and reward. This means that a favorite song can literally change your brain chemistry and improve your mood.   Music also has the ability to lower cortisol, the body's primary stress hormone. High levels of cortisol over long periods of time can contribute to anxiety, sleep issues, high blood pressure, and feelings of overwhelm. Calming music can slow the heart rate, lower stress levels, and help the body relax.   During this episode, we also discuss the incredible connection between music and memory. Many caregivers have witnessed patients with Alzheimer's disease who struggle to recognize family members suddenly become alert and sing along to songs from their youth. Music can unlock memories and emotions that seem to have disappeared, creating meaningful moments of connection.   We also share two inspiring stories about the life-changing power of music.   The first story is about an elderly man with Alzheimer's who barely spoke and spent most of his days withdrawn from the world around him. When caregivers played songs from his younger years, he began singing, smiling, and recalling memories from decades earlier. For a brief but precious moment, he was able to reconnect with his daughter, showing the extraordinary power that music has to awaken memories and emotions.   The second story follows a teenager struggling with anxiety and depression who received an old guitar as a gift. Learning to play and write songs became an emotional outlet and gave him a renewed sense of purpose. Music didn't instantly solve his problems, but it gave him hope, confidence, and a path toward healing.   This episode also provides practical ways to begin using music therapy in your own life. Create playlists that help you relax, motivate you to exercise, or remind you of happy memories. Listen to calming music before bed, play uplifting songs in the morning, or use instrumental music while working and studying.   The soundtrack we choose for our lives matters. Music can influence our emotions, our energy, and even our outlook on life. A song can bring comfort during difficult times, inspire us to keep moving forward, and remind us that we are never truly alone.   Join us for this uplifting and inspiring conversation as we explore how music can become one of the most powerful tools for healing, growth, and emotional well-being. Sometimes the medicine we need isn't found in a bottle—it can be found in a melody. Tune in to The Year of Profit and discover how small, consistent improvements can lead to significant changes. Whether you're starting a business, writing a book, building a side hustle, changing careers, or simply trying to improve yourself, there will always be people who question your decisions, doubt your abilities, or offer opinions that can shake your confidence.   In this episode of **Year of Profit**, Joe Shortridge dives deep into one of the most important skills for personal growth and success: learning how to deal with criticism and negativity from others.   Joe explains why criticism hurts so much and why successful people often become targets for negative opinions. As you begin to grow and pursue your goals, your actions can make others uncomfortable because your progress reminds them of the changes they wish they had made themselves. Understanding this can help you stop taking every negative comment personally.   This episode also breaks down the different types of critics you'll encounter in life. Some people genuinely want to help you improve and offer constructive feedback. Others project their own fears and insecurities onto your dreams. Some people criticize out of jealousy, while others simply enjoy tearing others down. Learning to recognize the difference can save you time, energy, and emotional stress.   Joe shares practical strategies for building emotional resilience and confidence. You'll learn why your self-worth should never depend on the opinions of others and why constantly seeking approval can leave you feeling empty and frustrated. Instead, confidence is built through keeping promises to yourself, focusing on your mission, and continuing to move forward even when others doubt you.   The episode also explores the importance of protecting your mental environment. The books you read, the people you spend time with, the content you consume, and the conversations you participate in all affect your mindset. By surrounding yourself with positive influences and limiting negativity, you can build the emotional strength needed to pursue your goals.   One of the biggest takeaways from this episode is that criticism is often the price of growth. The more visible you become, the more opinions you'll attract. Every successful entrepreneur, author, athlete, and leader has faced rejection and criticism along the way. The difference is that they refused to allow those opinions to determine their future.   Joe encourages listeners to stop seeking permission to chase their dreams and to stop allowing other people's opinions to control their decisions. Instead, he challenges you to focus on your purpose, embrace personal growth, and remember that your future is built one courageous decision at a time.   If you've ever struggled with self-doubt, worried about what others think, or allowed negativity to hold you back, this episode will give you the tools and inspiration to rise above the noise and keep moving forward.   Remember: You are stronger than someone's opinion. Your dreams are worth pursuing. And your greatest profit will always come from becoming the best version of yourself.   ### In This Episode You'll Learn:   * Why criticism hurts and how to stop taking it personally * The five different types of critics * How to build emotional resilience and confidence * Why successful people attract negativity * Practical ways to protect your mindset * How to turn criticism into motivation * Why self-worth should never depend on approval from others * The importance of focusing on your mission and purpose * How to rise above negativity and keep moving forward The Year of Profit is. In this episode of Year of Profit, we tackle one of the biggest thieves of happiness and financial peace: comparison. Inspired by a real-life story of a woman who believed she was falling behind financially, only to discover she was actually in better shape than many of the people she envied, this episode dives deep into the dangerous habit of comparing your real life to someone else's highlight reel. We explore why our brains naturally compare ourselves to others and how social media has amplified those feelings. Today's world gives us instant access to the best moments of thousands of people, making it easy to believe that everyone else is happier, wealthier, and more successful. But appearances can be deceiving. You'll learn why debt often looks like wealth, why financial peace rarely gets posted online, and why many people who appear successful are carrying enormous financial stress behind the scenes. We also discuss the difference between looking rich and becoming wealthy. Real wealth is often quiet. It can be found in the paid-off car, the emergency fund, the retirement account that steadily grows, and the nearly paid-off home. These things may not get likes or comments on social media, but they create something far more valuable—freedom and peace of mind. Throughout the episode, we challenge the cultural belief that success has to look expensive. We discuss lifestyle inflation, delayed gratification, compound growth, and why the most important competition in life isn't with your neighbor or old classmates—it's with the person you were yesterday. You'll also walk away with practical strategies to break free from the comparison trap, including: Measuring progress against your own goals. Practicing gratitude for what you already have. Celebrating small financial victories. Protecting your mindset from unrealistic expectations. Building a life based on peace instead of appearances. If you've ever felt discouraged because it seems like everyone else is moving ahead faster than you, this episode is for you. Your sacrifices matter. Paying off debt matters. Building savings matters. Driving an older car while investing in your future matters. Remember, someone else's social media posts don't tell the whole story. Financial peace, freedom, and security are often invisible to the outside world. Stop comparing your everyday life to someone else's highlight reel. Stop chasing a lifestyle designed to impress other people. Instead, focus on building a future that gives you choices, reduces stress, and creates lasting peace. Because at the end of the day, the goal isn't to look rich. The goal is to live well, sleep peacefully, and create a life that future you will thank you for.  Hosted by Joe Shortridge, The Year of Profit podcast is your ultimate destination for personal development, financial growth, and high-performance living. The truth is that many of us own clothing, shoes, accessories, collectibles, and household items that we no longer use—but someone else is actively searching for. One of the easiest ways to turn those unused items into extra cash is by selling on Vinted.   In this episode of **Year of Profit**, Joe explores how anyone can start making money on Vinted, whether you're simply cleaning out your home or looking to build a profitable side hustle. Selling online has become one of the fastest-growing ways to generate additional income, and Vinted has made it easier than ever to connect buyers and sellers from the comfort of your home.   Joe begins by explaining why the secondhand marketplace continues to grow as more people search for affordable clothing and sustainable shopping options. You'll learn why resale has become a booming industry and how everyday items that seem ordinary to you could be valuable to someone else.   The episode also covers the fundamentals of becoming a successful seller. You'll discover which categories tend to sell the fastest, including clothing, shoes, handbags, children's apparel, collectibles, and home goods. Joe shares practical advice on taking quality photos, writing honest product descriptions, pricing items competitively, and shipping orders quickly to build trust with buyers and earn positive reviews.   But making money is only half of the equation. Protecting yourself from scammers is just as important.   In the second half of the episode, Joe breaks down the five most common scams that target online sellers. You'll learn how fake payment emails are designed to steal personal information, why you should never move conversations off the Vinted platform, how dishonest buyers attempt item swap scams, how fake damage claims are used to request partial refunds, and why unofficial shipping labels can put your money and merchandise at risk.   Rather than focusing on fear, this episode provides practical solutions. Joe shares simple habits that experienced online sellers use every day to protect themselves and their businesses. From documenting your items with detailed photos to keeping all communication within the app, these strategies can help you avoid costly mistakes while building a trustworthy reputation as a seller.   The episode concludes with a 10-point Vinted Safety Checklist that every seller should follow before shipping an item. Whether you're selling your first T-shirt or managing hundreds of listings each month, these tips can help you sell with confidence.   If you've been looking for a flexible way to earn extra income, reduce clutter, and develop an entrepreneurial mindset, this episode is packed with actionable advice you can start using today.   Remember, financial success isn't always about earning more—it often begins by making smarter decisions with the resources you already have. In this powerful episode of **The Year of Profit**, host **Joe Shortridge** takes an honest and compassionate look at **hidden depression**—sometimes called **high-functioning depression**. Unlike the depression many people picture, hidden depression often goes unnoticed because those experiencing it continue to work, care for their families, maintain relationships, and carry out daily responsibilities while silently battling emotional pain.   Joe explores the subtle signs and symptoms that many people overlook, including chronic fatigue, emotional numbness, irritability, loss of motivation, difficulty concentrating, brain fog, isolation, perfectionism, and the constant pressure to appear "fine" even when life feels overwhelming. He explains why depression isn't always visible and how many people become experts at masking their emotions behind busy schedules, successful careers, and smiling faces.   This episode also discusses the impact hidden depression can have on every area of life. From relationships and family dynamics to career performance, financial health, physical well-being, and personal growth, depression can quietly rob us of our energy, confidence, and ability to enjoy the life we've worked so hard to build.   You'll learn the important differences between ordinary sadness, burnout, and clinical depression, along with why recognizing these differences matters. Joe shares how negative self-talk, isolation, perfectionism, and emotional exhaustion often become warning signs that something deeper may be happening.   More importantly, this episode offers hope.   Joe discusses practical steps that can support recovery, including reaching out to trusted friends and family, speaking with a licensed mental health professional, building healthy daily habits, improving sleep, exercising regularly, practicing gratitude, reducing stress, and rediscovering purpose. While no single strategy works for everyone, small consistent actions can become the foundation for meaningful change.   Whether you're struggling yourself or you're concerned about someone you love, this conversation provides encouragement, understanding, and practical insights that remind us no one has to face these challenges alone.   If you've ever found yourself saying, "I'm just tired," "I'm fine," or "I'll get through it," this episode may help you better understand what's really happening beneath the surface.   Remember, asking for help is not a sign of weakness—it is a sign of courage. Healing begins with one honest conversation, one small step, and the willingness to believe that tomorrow can be better than today.   If this episode encouraged you, please share it with a friend, family member, or coworker. You never know who may be quietly fighting a battle they haven't told anyone about.   Subscribe to **The Year of Profit** for weekly episodes focused on improving your mental wellness, financial health, personal growth, success mindset, leadership, motivation, and living a more intentional life.   **Disclaimer:** This podcast is intended for educational and informational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional medical or mental health advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
