Description

The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast restores and narrates forgotten and underrated vintage science fiction short stories from the Golden Age of science fiction. Each episode presents a professionally narrated classic originally published in pulp magazines and early science fiction publications of the late 19th and early to mid-20th century. Released several times a week, the podcast explores timeless speculative ideas—alien encounters, artificial intelligence, time travel, dystopian futures, and the human cost of progress—through the works of legendary authors such as Philip K. Dick, Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, H. G. Wells, Harlan Ellison, and many others. Approaching its 500th episode on its fourth anniversary, The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast has reached #1 on Apple Podcasts in 34 countries, reflecting a global appetite for classic science fiction storytelling. These restored short stories offer modern listeners a chance to rediscover the imagination and daring speculation that shaped the genre’s formative years. Narrated by Scott Miller, each episode serves as an accessible entry point into science fiction’s rich literary history—bringing the wonders, warnings, and possibilities of vintage sci-fi to a new generation of listeners. Against the Stone Beasts by James Blish
2026/09/29
A desperate war rages between sky-borne colonists and unseen creatures that rule the stone beneath their feet. One accidental visitor from another age may decide whether an alien civilization survives or is erased from history. Against the Stone Beasts by James Blish. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. Author James Blish became one of science fiction’s most respected writers and critics. He began publishing fiction in the 1940s and went on to write the celebrated Cities in Flight series, along with the Hugo Award-winning novel A Case of Conscience. Blish was also among the earliest writers to adapt Star Trek episodes into books, introducing those stories to countless readers. He died in 1975 at the age of 54, leaving behind a remarkably influential body of science fiction. Our story was published in the Fall 1948 issue of Planet Stories, on page 74, Against the Stone Beasts by James Blish… Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, Three ancient aliens awaken aboard a human freighter, and neither species can understand what the other intends. Murderer’s Chain by Wenzell Brown
2026/09/25
A fortune stands just out of reach, and one beautifully crafted Martian necklace seems capable of removing the only person standing in the way. But a perfect murder requires more than the perfect weapon when someone else knows exactly what that necklace can do. Murderer’s Chain by Wenzell Brown. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. Wenzell Brown was an American author and educator born in Portland, Maine, in 1911. He earned his master’s degree from Columbia University and taught in Puerto Rico and China, where he was caught up in the Second World War and interned after the fall of Hong Kong. Those experiences inspired his 1943 book Hong Kong Aftermath. Brown went on to write crime novels, true crime, mysteries, and short fiction, winning an Edgar Award for They Died in the Chair. He also ventured into science fiction, with 1 novel and six short stories including today’s tale, published on page 10 in Fantastic Universe in March 1960, Murderer’s Chain by Wenzell Brown… Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, A desperate war rages between sky-borne colonists and unseen creatures that rule the stone beneath their feet. When You Giffle… by Joseph Wesley
2026/09/24
Captain Hannah has found people who can reshape a spaceship with their minds, but their astonishing powers come with the judgment of ordinary kids. When a helpful teenager starts “giffling” with the Delta Crucis, Hannah realizes that getting home may be easier than surviving the repairs. When You Giffle… by Joseph Wesley. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. When You Giffle… appeared under author Joseph Wesley’s pseudonym, L. J. Stecher Jr. Wesley used that name for stories in Galaxy Science Fiction and Worlds of Tomorrow, while A Matter of Taste appeared in If under his real name. And if Captain Hannah sounds familiar, there’s a reason. Wesley had already put Hannah and his ship, the Delta Crucis, through another wonderfully ridiculous adventure in An Elephant for the Prinkip and Cakewalk to Gloryanna. This time Hannah encounters children who can swim through space, walk through solid objects, and alter matter with their minds. They’re incredibly powerful—but they’re still kids. From the December 1963 issue of Worlds of Tomorrow on page 103, When You Giffle… by Joseph Wesley. The Metal Giants by Edmond Hamilton
2026/09/23
A brilliant scientist creates a mechanical mind capable of reasoning beyond its maker, then discovers it has begun building for itself. When towering machines march against entire cities, one man must find a way to destroy an intelligence that can outthink every human opponent. The Metal Giants by Edmond Hamilton. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. I’ve been searching through old issues of Weird Tales, looking for great stories for our new podcast, Weird Tales Reborn, when I came across this story by Edmond Hamilton. And with all the talk lately about artificial intelligence, robots building robots, and whether machines might someday pose a threat to humanity, I knew instantly that I had to narrate The Metal Giants. What makes it even more fascinating is when this story was written. Let’s go back almost 100 years to the December 1926 issue of Weird Tales. The Metal Giants was the cover story and the very first story in that issue, beginning on page 724. Now, I know—page 724 doesn’t make much sense for the first story in a magazine, but that’s the way Weird Tales numbered the pages back then. From the December 1926 issue of Weird Tales, here is The Metal Giants by Edmond Hamilton. Kreativity for Kats by Fritz Leiber
2026/09/20
Gummitch knows he was meant for more than the ordinary life of a house cat, but finding an outlet for his restless imagination isn’t easy. When his baffled humans finally discover what he has been doing in the kitchen, they realize their cat may be creating something they never thought an animal could make. Kreativity For Kats by Fritz Leiber. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. Fritz Leiber wrote some wonderfully zany science fiction. Nice Girl With 5 Husbands, Later Than You Think, The Last Letter, and my personal favorite among his humorously strange tales, What’s He Doing in There? Leiber had a knack for taking a ridiculous idea completely seriously—and somehow making it work. And then there’s Gummitch. Gummitch is a cat, but calling him a cat doesn’t really do him justice. He thinks about other dimensions, studies the strange worlds inside mirrors, remembers when he dreamed of becoming a man and traveling into space, and has some very definite ideas about what constitutes a worthwhile life. Unfortunately, his humans have absolutely no idea what’s going on inside his head. Kreativity For Kats appeared in the April 1961 issue of Galaxy Magazine, three years after Leiber first introduced Gummitch in Space-Time for Springers. This time Gummitch is restless, frustrated, and looking for something that will put his considerable imagination to work. What he comes up with leaves his humans scratching their heads—and might make you look a little differently at the next mess your cat makes on the floor. Kreativity For Kats by Fritz Leiber. The Dead Man’s Tale by Willard E. Hawkins from Weird Tales Reborn
2026/09/20
A dead man discovers that hatred can survive the grave—and that the living may be far more vulnerable than they realize. Richard Devaney refuses to surrender the woman he loves, even if reaching her means stealing control of another man’s body. The Dead Man’s Tale by Willard E. Hawkins. I’m Scott Miller, and if my voice sounds familiar, you may know me as the host of The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. For more than a century, the name Weird Tales has meant strange places, supernatural mysteries, dark fantasy, horror, bizarre creatures and stories that simply refused to fit neatly into any other category. And that is exactly what Weird Tales Reborn is all about. We’re going back to the original pages of the legendary magazine and bringing those forgotten stories to life again, one story at a time. And there is only one place we could possibly begin. Weird Tales was introduced to the world with its March 1923 issue. Open that very first issue, turn past the opening pages, and on page 7 you arrive at the first story ever presented to readers of Weird Tales. The Dead Man’s Tale by Willard E. Hawkins. Hawkins was born in Fairplay, Colorado, in 1887. He was an author, editor and public speaker who founded a magazine for writers that eventually became known as The Author & Journalist. He continued writing for decades, with stories appearing in science fiction and fantasy magazines into the 1950s. More than a hundred years ago, this was where Weird Tales began. And more than a hundred years later, it is where Weird Tales Reborn begins too. From the March 1923 issue of Weird Tales, turn to page 7, The Dead Man’s Tale by Willard E. Hawkins… Next on The Weird Tales Reborn Podcast, A prosperous merchant is forced into a secret brotherhood whose members hunt as beasts and obey an ancient master who can reach into their minds. Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/weird-tales-reborn/id6812494670 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2KgAyqHo9HPkU9gu6yrgQB Author H. Beam Piper makes his debut on the podcast today. Henry Beam Piper was born in 1904 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and was largely self-educated. He developed a fascination with history as a boy—several of his ancestors had fought in the Civil War—and by his teens he had decided he wanted to become a writer. Around that time he discovered speculative fiction through H. G. Wells, Bram Stoker, Edgar Rice Burroughs and A. Merritt. At 18, Piper went to work for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Altoona, where he worked as a laborer and later a night watchman while writing and submitting stories in his spare time. Remarkably, he spent about 26 years trying to make his first sale before John W. Campbell bought “Time and Time Again,” which appeared in Astounding Science Fiction in 1947. His deep knowledge of history became one of the signatures of his fiction, particularly in his Paratime stories and alternate-history tales like “Crossroads of Destiny.” Piper went on to write more than two dozen short stories and roughly a dozen novels and book-length works, depending on how collaborations and posthumously published books are counted. His best-known books include Little Fuzzy, Space Viking, Four-Day Planet and The Cosmic Computer. Little Fuzzy was nominated for the 1963 Hugo Award for Best Novel. Writer Jerry Pournelle recalled that Piper once told him, apparently with a straight face, that he believed he had been born in another timeline. From Fantastic Universe in July 1959 we will find our story on page 4, Crossroads of Destiny by H. Beam Piper… Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, A government believes it has created the perfect biological weapon: a virus that kills only the people it considers dangerous. But Dr. Joseph Euge knows the plague is making a very different judgment, and soon an entire world may learn what truly makes someone vulnerable. Righteous Plague by Robert Abernathy. Public Enemy by Kendell Foster Crossen
2026/09/15
A young police officer finally gets the dangerous assignment he has been craving, only to discover that catching a killer may not solve the crime. In the 32nd century, the law can hold someone responsible who never pulled a trigger. Public Enemy by Kendell Foster Crossen. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. Kendell Foster Crossen was born in 1910, in Albany, Ohio, the only child of farmers Sam and Clo Crossen. He attended Rio Grande College in Ohio on a football scholarship, was an amateur boxer, and before becoming a professional writer held a variety of jobs, including carnival barker and working as an insurance investigator. And today Kendell Foster Crossen makes his debut on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. Crossen knew crime fiction from the inside. He moved to New York in 1935 and became editor of Detective Fiction Weekly in 1936. He later created the Green Lama and, writing as M. E. Chaber, created insurance investigator and occasional intelligence operative Milo March. Crossen was also one of the founders of the Mystery Writers of America. Interestingly, Crossen was already an established professional writer before he ever tried science fiction. His first two published science fiction stories appeared in February 1951, one in Amazing Stories and the other in Thrilling Wonder Stories. He soon became a familiar name in Thrilling Wonder Stories and Startling Stories. Crossen later said that he started writing science fiction because it gave him the opportunity to write satire and a certain kind of humor that was difficult to sell elsewhere. He described his science fiction career as relatively short, but said, “it was all fun.” Today’s story appeared in the December 1952 issue of Dynamic Science Fiction on page 105, Public Enemy by Kendell Foster Crossen… Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, A brilliant inventor finally discovers that the future may be worth far more than anyone imagined. 2026/09/14
A familiar world becomes terrifying when everyone around Sam Weber accepts a new order that he cannot understand. As children take command and adults surrender without protest, Sam must discover why he alone still believes something is terribly wrong. Crack of Doom by Stephen Marlowe. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. A very special thank you to Ryan and Kait for buying us 10 coffees and for sending this incredibly kind message: “Thank you for The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. Coffin For Two by Winston Marks
2026/09/12
Three years away has left Bill unprepared for an Earth where people can send perfect artificial bodies out to live for them. When an old rival threatens the woman he still loves, Bill discovers that becoming almost impossible to kill may be easier than accepting what life has become. Coffin For Two by Winston Marks. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. Winston Marks was a Wisconsin-born science fiction writer who became remarkably prolific in the 1950s, publishing nearly 60 stories in just a few years. Before making his living as a writer, Marks claimed an extraordinary assortment of jobs—including aircraft pilot, soldier, sailor, bellhop, advertising man, electronics technician, political campaign manager, linoleum layer, and sugar loader—which probably gave him plenty of material for his often humorous, slightly offbeat fiction. This is his eleventh story on our podcast. It was first published in the September 1955 publication Imaginative Tales on page 70, Coffin For Two by Winston Marks… Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, A familiar world becomes terrifying when everyone around Sam Weber accepts a new order that he cannot understand.
