Explore the ancient idea of a world before the moon and what that would have meant for time, seasons, tides, astrology, and magical practice. Consider how life and reality might have felt without lunar measurement, including questions about menstruation, fertility, agriculture, and whether tides or weather would have been chaotic without the moon's pull. April and Maggie share myths, oral traditions, and philosophers and poets such as Ovid (with the image of the moon "renewing her crescent horns"), Aristotle's mention of the Arcadians as "Proselenes" (people before the moon), and other perspectives that treat the moon's later arrival as common knowledge. The discussion also touches on modern theories of the moon as a hollow satellite or "parked" craft, recent images of the moon's dark side, and ongoing public talk about aliens, ending with a reflection on not taking the moon's influence for granted and a note that the season is concluding and will return in early July. This episode explores Circe in Greek mythology through Homer's Odyssey, presenting her as a powerful sorceress and full goddess born to Helios and a sea nymph, embodying balanced sun-and-moon energy. Circe is known as a powerful witch with vast knowledge of potions and herbs. On her lush, animal-filled island, she welcomes Odysseus's men to a feast laced with potions that transform them into swine as a mirror of their recent war behavior. Warned by Hermes and protected by Athena's herb, Odysseus resists Circe's magic, confronts her, and they become lovers, living together for years and having three sons; she later restores his men. Circe then teaches Odysseus necromancy—witchcraft with the dead—so he can enter the underworld, consult an expert, and learn how to navigate back to Ithaca. Circe, a powerful witch and left on her solitary island, will help you to explore power, ethics, self-knowledge, and intent in magic. We are closing out the shadow season by revisiting Medusa, blood magic, and necromancy as we move toward the Spring Equinox and Aries season, framed as a shift from inward shadow work into passion, life force, and healing. Have you heard the myth in which Perseus takes Medusa's blood, said to be deadly from her left side and the ultimate healing elixir from her right? This duality connects to long-standing right/left spiritual traditions. Asclepius uses the healing blood to resurrect the dead until Zeus stops him by striking him into the constellation Ophiuchus, linked to sacred serpents and medicine. Explore a Thessalian necromancer, Erichtho, who emphasizes necromancy as powerful healing. Reconsider death, ancestral wisdom, and what parts of the self to revive or release as we flow into balance of the worlds, night and day, left and right hand paths, and the healing weaving of polarity and duality. A "blood moon" lunar eclipse is happening March 3rd at almost 13° Virgo. This eclipse is comparatively quiet astrologically, making it easier to focus on Virgo themes of order, service, health, and returning to a natural rhythm. This eclipse "rules" for six months and may fully ripen during Virgo season. Protection is a central theme, connected to blood as naturally protective and to the eclipse as a safe container for ritual and self-exploration, especially around vulnerable "maiden" aspects of self. For goddess work, we recommend Medusa as a powerful protector and healer deeply linked to blood magic. Medusa's mythic blood created coral and red serpents. Explore historical protective folk magic in 16th-century English spell jars using one's own urine, blood, and hair with herbs as well as Melinoë a lesser-known goddess, presented in the Orphic Hymn 71. She is the daughter of Persephone, and Melinoë is a dark and luminous Goddess, the "Queen of Nightmares" and "Master of Ghosts," ruling liminal space between life and death and invoked for protection, trauma processing, and relief from fear and night terrors. She parallels this eclipse "portal" energy. Enjoy this potent time of a lunar eclipse and blood magic! Dive into the mythology of Mari, an ancient and obscure goddess from the Basque people. Found in regions of Portugal, Spain, and France, Mari is a Neolithic deity who embodies all elements and controls weather among other natural forces. Unlike typical mythologies, Mari's traditions and stories are based purely on nature and are independent of other spiritual or mythological systems. Much of Mari's legend, including her shapeshifting abilities and role as a goddess of justice and natural order, has survived through the ages despite attempts by the church to erase her from history. Mari has a beautiful consort, Sugaar, who is a dragon who also appear as a pillar of fire, as does Mari. She embodies the primordial fire, the natural world and when her consort and her connect, fire and lightening and many storms are created to create rain, storms, and weather that support the natural flow of agriculture and sustenance for her world. Mari is the primary deity of an ancient culture that is pure, raw, and connected to the natural order of life. In this episode, we delve into the harrowing period of the Spanish Inquisition, focusing on the story of Maria de Arburu. Maria's story is not well-known, but she is force of strength and her story is to be honored and remembered. Despite the severe torture over seven years and witnessing the death of her fellow accused women, Maria maintained her innocence until her tragic execution on November 1, 1659, during the Auto-da-Fe´ ceremony.  As we create our altars for Samhain, hundreds of years later, we encourage lighting a candle for the ancestors that have come before to honor their memories. Take a moment to express gratitude that we can practice witchcraft and not be put to death for it, and that we can heal in our communities and not be ostracized, entirely, and hunted. Join April and Maggie as they dive into two distinct historical witches, the paths they have paved, and the healing energy that their stories remind us is still needed on our walk upon this earth. Let us remember their journeys with gratitude and love. Mary Bliss Parsons was accused of witchcraft multiple times in the seventeenth century. She was acquitted on all accounts through many decades of accusations and survived the intense witch trials and legal persecutions of the times.  Malin Matsdotter is a historical witch from Sweden. Her story encapsulates the most horrific betrayal by her daughters and their accusations against her which led to her death by fire. Her story is one of the strongest examples of innocent defiance. Her cries changed the course of the witch hunts in Sweden and her death was a contributing factor to the beginning of the end of a horrendous time in history.
