The Divine Feminine
2026/10/26
Somewhere between ancient mysticism, feminine energy advice, and Instagram spirituality, the divine feminine has become surprisingly difficult to explain. I've been trying to understand for years what people are actually reaching for when they use those words. Because I suspect there's something much deeper underneath all the aesthetics, expectations, and modern interpretations. In this episode of Idiot Mystic, I explore the divine feminine through psychology, meditation, and the writings of Teresa of Ávila, particularly her beautiful image of the soul as an enormous castle filled with rooms we've never entered. We get into receptivity, intuition, boundaries, grief, creativity, and the expectations we place on women to be endlessly nurturing, accommodating, and emotionally available. And we explore how these qualities might belong to all of us, regardless of gender. I also reflect on what years of meditation, fatherhood, and learning from women who have been generous with their wisdom have taught me about listening, care, and the inner life. There's an enormous spiritual dimension to this conversation that I haven't even begun to explore properly. I hope this episode opens the door to returning to it. As always, thank you for spending some of your time here. IDIOT MYSTIC Available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube, and all major podcast platforms ( ewwww ). 🌧️ Morning Arrival | 1 Hour Gentle Morning Meditation, Rain Sounds & Alpha Sound Bath
2026/10/25
Good morning. Or whatever time you've decided counts as morning. Before you check your phone, answer your messages, or find out what happened to civilization while you were asleep, spend a few minutes arriving in the day. Morning Arrival is a 1-hour sound bath, combining a short guided morning meditation, gentle rainfall, warm ambient music, and subtle 10 Hz alpha binaural tones. We'll spend the first few minutes noticing the room, checking in with the body, taking a breath, and choosing one simple quality to carry into the day. After that, I'll leave you with the rain and music. Play it while you're waking up, making coffee, journaling, stretching, reading, meditating, or just enjoying a little time before the day gets busy. Headphones are recommended for the binaural audio, but you can enjoy the rain and ambient sound bath through speakers too. There's no need to start the day at maximum volume. Most things worth doing can survive a gentle beginning. The Sickness That Isn't Impressive Enough
2026/10/24
There's a weird hierarchy to suffering. Some illnesses come with immediate understanding and sympathy. Others leave you looking perfectly healthy while your entire life quietly falls apart. What happens when you're not dying, but you're not really able to live the way you used to? When your condition isn't impressive enough to earn sympathy, but it's serious enough to change everything? This episode is about invisible illness, chronic pain, the grief of losing a future nobody knows you've lost, and the strange expectation that suffering needs to be visible before people believe it. Also, apparently, the cure for everything is yoga and magnesium. Go for a Walk
2026/10/23
I've spent years studying psychology, teaching meditation, and working in professional sports, and somehow one of the most useful things I can recommend is going for a walk. I realize how disappointing that sounds. But there's something weird what happens when you stop sitting in the same room, thinking the same thoughts, and actually move through the world for a while. In this episode, I want to talk about walking as a spiritual practice. We get into why movement can change the way we experience anger, anxiety, grief, and overthinking, how walking affects the nervous system, and why human beings have been wandering around trying to figure themselves out for thousands of years. I also talk about walking in Abrahamic traditions, pilgrimage, Buddhist walking meditation, creativity, fatherhood, and why some of the best conversations happen when you're simply moving alongside somebody. And because I apparently have no sense of business, I also explain why you should occasionally turn off podcasts (including mine) and go walking without anything playing in your ears. You don't need ten thousand steps, a fitness tracker, a special breathing technique, or a spiritual breakthrough. Sometimes it's worth going outside simply because you've spent six hours staring at a screen and your body would probably appreciate remembering that the rest of the planet exists. If you've been feeling stuck in your head lately, this one's for you. Go for a walk. Welcome to Idiot Mystic. The TV Shows That Made Me
2026/10/22
I grew up watching Sesame Street, RoboCop, He-Man, and a Japanese cartoon about Heidi, sometimes practically in the same sitting. Somehow, nobody seemed concerned about this. I've been thinking about all the television I watched growing up and how much of it is still rattling around in my head. The cartoons, the theme songs, the toys, the characters I was obsessed with, and entire fictional worlds I apparently knew better than the real one I was living in. So in this episode, I'm going through as many of those memories as I can fit into about 45 minutes. We get into He-Man, G.I. Joe, Transformers, Power Rangers, Saber Rider, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Dexter's Laboratory, Johnny Bravo, Rocket Power, As Told by Ginger, Kim Possible, Toonami, Dragon Ball Z, Pokémon, and a whole lot more. And yes, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, which I started watching around the same time I was training and fighting professionally. I have absolutely no problem admitting that...though I got a sufficiently hard time once I started talking about how good it was at the gym. There's also a possibly obscure animated Snow White sequel that I remember watching as a child, except I can't confidently identify the movie. So if you know what I'm talking about, please help me. I talk about collecting action figures, spending absurd amounts of time choosing toys, why I loved cartoons about ordinary everyday life just as much as ones about fighting monsters, and how I never really stopped watching animation as I got older. Making this episode brought back a ridiculous number of memories. I'm curious whether it'll do the same for you. What cartoons did you grow up with? And what's one show you remember that nobody else seems to know existed? Come tell me. I'd genuinely love to hear about it. Did Something Non-Human Speak to Joseph Smith, Aleister Crowley, Descartes & Teresa of Ávila?
2026/10/21
Joseph Smith claimed an angel appeared repeatedly in his bedroom, eventually leading him to the gold plates connected with the Book of Mormon. Aleister Crowley said a mysterious intelligence named Aiwass dictated an entire religious text to him over three days in Cairo. René Descartes believed three bizarre dreams revealed his life's purpose. Teresa of Ávila spent years investigating voices, visions, angels, and the possibility of spiritual deception. And Thomas Aquinas experienced something so profound that he abruptly stopped writing one of the most important works in Christian philosophy. In this episode of Idiot Mystic, we examine five historical figures who believed they received information from somewhere beyond their ordinary conscious minds. What actually happened during Joseph Smith's angelic visitations? Who was Aiwass, and why did Crowley believe the voice was independent of his own mind? Why did the father of modern rational philosophy take his dreams so seriously? How did Teresa attempt to distinguish genuine divine communication from imagination or deception? And what could Aquinas possibly have experienced that made decades of theological writing seem insignificant? We explore the historical records, firsthand accounts, unusual details, documentary contradictions, and psychological explanations behind these encounters. Some experiences produced books and entire religious movements. Others changed the direction of philosophy. One brought a lifetime of writing to a sudden end. Were these communications from God, angels, unknown intelligences, unconscious parts of the human mind, or something we still don't fully understand? The question becomes even odder when we examine what each person did after the encounter. Why Does Everything Have to Become Something?
2026/10/20
It seems like nobody is allowed to just like something anymore. You make good bread and somebody tells you to sell it. You start exercising and suddenly there are numbers, goals, and progress photos. You meditate and now it needs to improve productivity. You enjoy a quiet moment and some part of your brain immediately wonders whether it should become content, money, a side hustle, a brand, or proof that you are doing well. In this episode of Idiot Mystic, I talk about what happens when every interest, skill, private joy, and even rest starts getting pushed toward becoming something else. I get into the psychology behind intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, why hobbies feel different once money or audience expectations enter the room, why tracking and optimization can quietly replace direct experience, and why modern life makes it so hard to let anything remain private, pointless, amateur, or simply enjoyable. I also talk about how this shows up in my own life through fighting, meditation, chronic pain, fatherhood, and of course this podcast itself. Even something meaningful can slowly develop its own little machine around it. Titles, thumbnails, uploads, analytics, performance. Eventually you realize your own thoughts are going through an internal production department. This is not an episode against ambition, discipline, or making money from something you love. It is about understanding that something changes when a hobby becomes accountable to a market, a metric, or an audience. And it is about asking whether a few parts of life still deserve to remain untouched by all that. A walk can just be a walk. A conversation can just be a conversation. An afternoon can end without proof. A thing you enjoy does not always need to become a better thing later. Sometimes the life you are always trying to turn into something was already the thing. 🌐 Website: https://www.idiotmystic.com📝 Blog: https://www.idiotmystic.com/blog💬 Discord: https://discord.gg/dXKjhZrZmM📸 Instagram: https://instagram.com/idiotmystic🎵 TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@idiotmystic Listen on Spotify and watch on YouTube by searching Idiot Mystic.
What If You Don’t Want to Wake Up?
2026/10/19
Have you ever understood something about yourself and then wished you could go back to not noticing it? In this episode, I use The Truman Show to explore why knowing something needs to change doesn’t always make it easier to change it. Familiar habits can be hard to leave, especially when a different choice might disappoint someone or mean admitting you were wrong. I talk about how searching for advice can become a way to postpone doing anything, and what meditation can reveal about our need for approval. We also look at how to take a small, practical step without expecting yourself to have everything figured out first. This continues the conversation from Wake Up and Who Told You You Had to Fit?, but you can start here. Could You Just Sit With Me?
2026/10/18
You call someone because you’ve had a difficult day. They offer good advice, you thank them, and after you hang up, you realise you never said what was really hurting. In this episode, I explore why it can feel so awkward to ask for company when someone can’t change what happened. Drawing on Simone Weil’s writing about attention, I reflect on what it takes to hear another person before reaching for an answer. There’s room here for the friend who starts offering solutions because they care and feel helpless too. I also look at how we can ask more honestly for what we need while allowing the people we love to have limits. This is episode four of Letting Love Reach You. You can listen to it on its own. The Public Universal Friend
2026/10/17
In October 1776, Jemima Wilkinson survived a dangerous fever and announced that Jemima had died. The person who rose from the bed called themself the Public Universal Friend and claimed to be a spirit sent by God, neither male nor female. For more than forty years, the Friend preached, gathered followers, challenged slavery and gender expectations, and helped establish a religious settlement in New York. Along the way came devoted supporters, influential women, property disputes, and hostile accounts that still shape the story. This episode of Idiot Mystic follows the Friend’s own account of what happened, the life built around it, and the limits of what history can tell us. Was the illness a divine calling, a rupture in identity, or an encounter with something we still struggle to name? You Don’t Know How Good You’re Allowed to Feel
2026/10/16
Do you ever finally sit down, then feel as though you should be doing something else? This episode is about the rules we carry around rest and enjoyment, and how strange a good moment can feel when you’re used to pushing through. I talk about feeling guilty for taking a break and the fear that getting comfortable will make you careless. We also explore what happens when you start missing a peaceful evening before it has even ended. Living with chronic pain has made me interested in the possibility of partial comfort. You can enjoy an hour while the rest of your life still needs attention. That leads us into meditation, faith, and the unfamiliar depths of stillness that can make you curious about what else being alive might feel like. There’s a brief optional pause to notice something comfortable or simply okay, without needing to turn it into a breakthrough. You’re welcome to listen and see what comes up for you. 🌧️ For People Who Can’t Stop Thinking | 1 Hour Rain Sounds & Theta Sound Bath for Overthinking
2026/10/15
If your mind won't stop thinking, I have some good news. I'm not going to ask you to make it stop. This 1-hour rain sound bath is for anyone who struggles with overthinking, racing thoughts, or simply finding a little quiet inside their own head. We begin with a short guided meditation about something that people often misunderstand: meditation doesn't require an empty mind. Your thoughts can keep happening. You can get distracted, start planning tomorrow, replay an old conversation, or remember something embarrassing from fifteen years ago. When you realize your attention has wandered, you can gently come back to the sound of the rain. That moment of noticing is the practice. After the introduction, the voice fades away, leaving an hour of real rain sounds, warm ambient tones, subtle 6 Hz theta binaural beats, and occasional singing-bowl-style sounds. The bowls appear at irregular intervals, giving your attention a little reminder to return whenever you happen to notice them. Oh. I'm here. You can use this sound bath for meditation, relaxation, sleep, journaling, studying, or spending an hour somewhere that doesn't demand quite so much from you. Headphones are recommended for the binaural effect, although the rain and ambient sound bath can be enjoyed through regular speakers. Experiences with binaural beats vary from person to person. You don't need fewer thoughts before you're allowed to feel peaceful. Just notice when you've wandered off, and come back without being mean to yourself. The Beach Boys & Love | Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon Part 7
2026/10/14
California was supposed to be paradise. Sunshine, surfing, beautiful people, perfect harmonies, and the promise that everything would somehow be okay. But what was happening to the people making the music? Welcome to Part 7 of my deep dive into David McGowan's Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon: Laurel Canyon, Covert Ops & the Dark Heart of the Hippie Dream. This episode explores Arthur Lee and Love, Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys, and the strange emotional darkness hiding underneath the California dream of the 1960s. Arthur Lee's band Love made some of the most beautiful and unsettling psychedelic music of the era. Their album Forever Changes captured an atmosphere of anxiety and uncertainty that feels very different from the carefree flower-power mythology we usually associate with the time. Then there's Brian Wilson, the musical genius behind The Beach Boys. While the band helped sell America a fantasy of endless summers, Brian was dealing with family trauma, enormous creative pressure, and psychological struggles. His relationship with his father, Murry Wilson, makes the cheerful California image considerably more complicated. We also revisit Dennis Wilson's connection to Charles Manson, bringing two very different sides of California's music scene uncomfortably close together. Along the way, I try my best explore how the music industry packages happiness, how damaged people can create extraordinary beauty, and whether the California dream was ever as innocent as we remember. Drawing on McGowan's book, documented history, and my own interpretations, this episode looks at the human side of a culture surrounded by conspiracy theories. This chapter was a little less sensational than the others, but I felt it still needed to be talked about. The music was beautiful but the stories behind it were often much darker. 🌊 Float Without Leaving Your Body | Ocean Sounds + Theta Sound Bath for Deep Meditation
2026/10/13
This 1-hour ocean sound bath is built around a strange but very ordinary experience: when you lie still long enough, your usual sense of the body can start to feel less fixed. Your hands may feel larger. Your legs may feel far away. You may notice tingling, heaviness, lightness, or even a sense of motion while you are completely still. The first few minutes are guided and focus on interoception, which is simply your awareness of what is happening inside the body. After that, the voice fades and the rest of the hour becomes: deep ocean sounds + a spacious ambient pad + a subtle theta binaural layer around 6 Hz. The idea is not to force an out-of-body experience or interpret every unusual sensation. It is simply to notice how strange the body can already feel when attention becomes quiet and still. Use this for meditation, deep rest, body awareness, hypnagogic exploration, sleep, or just lying down and letting your usual sense of yourself loosen a little. Headphones are recommended if you want the binaural effect. Without headphones, it still works as an ocean and ambient meditation sound bath. You are not trying to leave the body. Maybe you are just noticing how weird it already is to be inside one. 🌊 Let Your Body Get Heavy | Ocean Sounds for Sleep + Delta Sound Bath for Deep Rest
2026/10/12
You don’t have to hold yourself up anymore. This 1-hour ocean sound bath is built around the feeling of letting gravity take over and allowing the body to become heavy without forcing yourself to relax. The first few minutes are guided. We move through the weight of the head, shoulders, arms, back, hips, legs, and feet, using the body itself as the meditation rather than trying to control every breath or thought. After that, the voice fades and the rest of the hour becomes: slow ocean surf + a warm ambient sound bath + a subtle delta binaural layer around 2.5 Hz. The music stays low, broad, and intentionally uneventful. No melody to follow or dramatic changes or constant bells. The ocean provides most of the movement while the sound bath sits quietly underneath it. Use this for sleep, deep rest, meditation, winding down after a long day, or those nights when your body is tired but your mind hasn’t quite accepted that the day is over. Headphones are recommended if you want to experience the binaural layer. Without headphones, it still works as an ocean and ambient sleep sound bath. You don’t need to make yourself relax. Let the ocean move. Let gravity do some of the work.
