Yale, written by Philadelphia native Van Billet and directed by Jay Silverman, tells the true story of Billet’s grandfather, Yale Parker (Kevin Dunn), a burlesque comedian and serial bigamist who walked out on several families. It’s told through his daughter Mackenzie (Caitlin McGee), who has to face the father who abandoned her as the last-ditch effort to find a donor kidney for her dying son. We're joined by both Billet and Silverman to discuss their personal and professional stories surrounding the making of the film ahead of its premiere in the "Filmadelphia" section of the 35th Philadelphia Film Festival.  Yale screens Friday, October 16 at 7:30 PM, and again Saturday, October 24 at 5:15 PM at the Philadelphia Film Society Center. This month on Read Receipts we’re diving deep into Colleen Hoover’s sick, twisted mind for a movie vs. book analysis of Verity.  Read Receipts is a big screen book club from The Rolling Tape where we read a book and watch its onscreen adaptation. Our first episode was on Wuthering Heights, so if we could handle that, we can make it through Colleen Hoover’s 2018 psychological erotic thriller Verity.  We dive into our thoughts on the book vs. the film, what we think of Colleen Hoover’s writing, Dakota Johnson’s acting, and more. Verity stars Anne Hathaway as Verity Crawford, Dakota Johnson as Lowen Ashleigh, and Josh Hartnett as Jeremy Crawford – the film is directed by Michael Showalter, and written by Nick Antosca. A quick little ditty about the book: it was originally self-published in 2018, and it was eventually republished, in 2021, due to a surge in popularity, thanks to our good ol’ friend BookTok. It was a departure for Colleen Hoover as she typically focused on romance, not thrillers.  So, spoilers ahead for both the movie and book, Verity. So many anticipated awards contenders have premiered, delivering receptions that have either surprised us or validated what we’ve been thinking about them all year. We’ve seen the premieres of Wild Horse Nine, Elsinore, The Debut, I Play Rocky, Being Heumann, Behemoth!, and Artificial, among others. Meanwhile, theatrical studio films like The Social Reckoning and Digger have seen their awards-season momentum stall based on critical reception.  As a result we're focusing on our Best Picture predictions this episode discussing the studios and films competing for the 10 slots and the state of our current predictions and on-the-bubble contenders. The Mommy Reckoning is here. Stepchildren, it's your time to shine. We're here to reckon with our childhood trauma and Instagram-induced body image issues. Do I have your attention, or do I have the minimum amount? We're talking about David Fincher's eighth directorial effort, The Social Network, which stars Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, Armie Hammer, Josh Pence, and Max Minghella. The film was adapted by Aaron Sorkin from the book The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich. The Social Network was released on October 1, 2010, and went on to gross nearly $225 million worldwide on a $40 million budget. It received rave reviews from critics and audiences as it detailed the rise of Mark Zuckerberg and the dawn of a new era of capitalist media moguls controlling our information distribution and interpersonal communication in the digital age. By the end of 2010, many considered it one of the best films of the year. It appeared on 78 critics' top-10 lists, with 22 critics naming it their number-one film overall. The film went on to receive eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, and won three awards: Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Even though it's only been 16 years, the legacy of the film has extended far beyond its initial impact, with many now deeming it one of the greatest films of the 21st century. And now, a companion film is coming out on October 9th called The Social Reckoning, written and directed by Sorkin himself. The film stars Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, and Jeremy Strong, who takes on the role of Mark Zuckerberg. In honor of The Social Reckoning's release, we're doing a retrospective dive into The Social Network as we talk about the film, how we feel about it, the careers of Fincher, Sorkin, and the actors following the film's success, and its awards history from starting out as the top contender to beat to ultimately becoming the film that lost Best Picture to The King's Speech. The series stars Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, and Kelly Macdonald, and follows two Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan and John Stewart, as they get pulled into a murder mystery in the American heartland. The series comes from Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, with Mundy serving as the showrunner. It’s also one of the first major pieces of the new DC Universe from DC Studios, so there are a lot of interesting and exciting implications that come from this series and could affect the wider DCU. Now that we’ve seen the whole season, we’re here to talk about what worked, what didn’t work, where all of these characters end up, and what we think Lanterns means for the wider scope of superhero television. Hot Diggity! That’s Digger and Verity for those at home wondering, it’s a double feature day on The Rolling Tape podcast, but not just any double feature, it’s the start of October and all month long we are going to be celebrating cross programming with not one, but two sides to each of our weekly reviews and interactive audience polls about each movie. Digger is directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, who co-wrote the screenplay with Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris Jr., and Nicolás Giacobone. The most powerful man in the world embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity's savior before the disaster he's unleashed destroys everything. Alongside Tom Cruise as the titular Digger Rockwell, it stars Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons. Break out your cranberry juice, your microprocessors, and your Nokia flip phones, because we're celebrating the 20th anniversary of Martin Scorsese's The Departed with special guest Ryan Casselman! One caveat, though: the film was released theatrically on October 6, 2006, so upon release, we're still six days away from the actual anniversary. But we do have an amazing retrospective planned for next week, so consider this killing two rats with one bullet.  Anyway, The Departed is Scorsese's 20th narrative feature and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Vera Farmiga, Martin Sheen, and Alec Baldwin. The film was written by William Monahan, who adapted it from Andrew Lau and Alan Mak's 2002 Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs. The Departed grossed approximately $291 million worldwide, making it Scorsese's highest-grossing film at the time, until it was eclipsed by The Wolf of Wall Street in 2013. For our conversation on The Awards Tape, we'll also breakdown how it became an unexpected awards contender. Associate producer Emma Tillinger Koskoff recalled that Scorsese initially assumed the film had little chance with the Academy, saying, "Here's the good news: we're not going to be traveling the world and hitting the pavement on the awards circuit because there is no way — this movie is so vile and violent." Obviously, he was wrong. At the 79th Academy Awards, The Departed won four Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director for Scorsese, Best Adapted Screenplay for Monahan, and Best Film Editing for Thelma Schoonmaker. More importantly, it earned Scorsese his first Best Director Oscar after five previous nominations. So, do we love The Departed as much as the Academy did? Maybe, maybe not. “You know how this looks right?” Primetime premiered in the main competition of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival on September 5, 2026, where it competed for the Golden Lion. It has since been released theatrically by A24 as of September 25.  Primetime follows the production of the hit NBC reality television series To Catch a Predator where Robert Pattinson stars as series host Chris Hansen pushing the ethical boundaries of the show to increase ratings. Merritt Wever, Skyler Gisondo, and Phoebe Bridgers play supporting roles. By the time you're listening to this, the 51st Toronto International Film Festival will have wrapped up its 11-day run, which featured world premieres of Siân Heder's Being Heumann, Chris Rock's Misty Green, Peter Farrelly's I Play Rocky, and many more films coming off festivals like Sundance, Berlin, Cannes, and Venice. Famously dubbed the "People's Festival," Toronto gives movie fans and critics the opportunity to see some of the most acclaimed films of the year. This year, The Rolling Tape also had the privilege of having five of its members on the ground in Toronto: Cameron Ritter, Nadia Arain, Kasey Dunifer, Jacob Diedenhofer, and Evan Miller. This year's winners have already been announced, with Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo's La Bola Negra taking the People's Choice Award, Peter Farrelly's I Play Rocky finishing as the first runner-up, and Siân Heder's Being Heumann finishing as the second runner-up. After seven live action films in the video game adaptation franchise, Resident Evil is back in business with Zach Cregger at the helm coming off the meteoric Oscar sensation for Amy Madigan in Weapons in his third feature.  Resident Evil is directed by Zach Cregger and written by Cregger and Shay Hatten, based on the Resident Evil video game franchise. It follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who must fight through an outbreak of infected monsters in Raccoon City. Bachata music dominates the world today. With artists like Luis Vargas, Anthony Santos, Juan Luis Guerra, and Romeo Santos, the upbeat tunes with the somber lyrics are a staple of Hispanic and Latino clubs, parties, weddings, and so on.
