Episode 107 - Joshua Thompson (Wang Chung, Cutting Crew)
2026/09/15
On this weeks episode of the Musicians Mentor podcast I speak with Wang Chung drummer (and multi instrumentalist) - Joshua Thompson. Josh and I met a few months ago at a gig that both of our bands were on. I was instantly drawn to his power as a drummer and before you knew it we got talking. Turned out that he was/is not only a super talented musician, but also one of the coolest dudes you'd ever cross paths with. A life long musician, Josh grew up picking up music in the churches his family was involved in, starting first with drums and then eventually guitar and singing. From there he cut his teeth as a gigging musician for about a decade before getting the roll as drummer with 80's icons - Wang Chung. He has also performed with Cutting Crew and a host of others. During our interview we talk about drumming, AI, touring, un unorganized promoters, work/life balance and a host of other topics. Episode 106 - Ashton Nyte (The Awakening)
2026/09/01
This week on the Musicians Mentor podcast I speak with South African born singer/songwriter/producer and Goth/Darkwave band 'The Awakening' founder - Ashton Nyte. Ashton and I first crossed paths at a gig that both our bands were on, when I was probably around 16 years old. 'The Awakening' had recently had a number one single on the Rock charts over there with their cover version of 'The Sound Of Silence, and it was pretty clear (to me atleast), that they were destined for more. Fast forward a few decades and frontman, Ashton Nyte has proven beyond a doubt that he truly is quite the creative force, having released over a dozen albums under 'The Awakening' banner, eight solo records and even written two books. In this interview, Ashton and I talk about his entrepreneurial mindset, his company 'Intervention Arts', his decision to relocate to the United States', tour life and even - Elvis. The one and only - Jennifer Batten. Many of you will know of Jennifer because of her years of work with the biggest pop star to ever do it - Michael Jackson but in addition to her with with MJ, she also toured and recorded with the legendary Jeff Beck from 1999 to 2001. Originally part of the band 'True', Dan decided to relocate to Los Angeles in the mid 90's to try and further his career. A decision that ultimately ended up being life changing for him. 2026/06/23
For today's episode I thought I'd share an archived interview from around twelve years ago, that I did with session drumming legend - Clem Cattini. Based in Stoke Newington, UK - Clem Cattini is an English drummer who was not only a member of 'The Tornados' but so prominent in the 50's, 60's and 70's that he is actually regarded as one of the most prolific drummers in UK recording history, appearing on hundreds of recordings by artists like Cliff Richard, Lou Reed, Marc Bolan, The Kinks, Herman's Hermits, The Yardbirds and Tom Jones. Clem and I talk about his work with a young Jimmy Page, how hard it was to get lessons back in the day, songwriting and of course his legendary drumming career - where he played on over 40 UK number one singles. 2026/06/09
On episode 100 of the show, I’m joined by South African multi instrumentalist/producer and 'Just Jinjer' bassist - Denholm Harding. Denholm began his musical career in Cape Town at the age of 5, when he appeared on a nationally televised talent show open to all ages called ‘Follow That Star’ where he made it through to the finals. By Grade 7, he joined popular kids program K-TV as the ‘K-TV Kids’ Band drummer and moved up to Johannesburg to pursue his musical career. In taking the next step Denholm coupled his deep understanding of music and instruments with his spectacular ear and began producing albums for other artists and bands like Jesse Clegg and Prime Circle,. Episode 99 - Brian Tichy (Led By Vultures, Gene Simmons Band, Whitesnake)
2026/05/26
On today’s episode of the show, I’m joined by the frontman of 'Led By Vultures', multi-instrumentalist, and world-renowned drummer — Brian Tichy. For decades, Brian has been known as one of rock’s most respected drummers, performing alongside some of the biggest names in music including Ozzy Osbourne, Billy Idol, Whitesnake, and Slash. He’s also currently a member of the Gene Simmons Solo Band. With his new project, 'Led By Vultures', Brian is stepping into an entirely new chapter — taking on the role of guitarist, singer, songwriter, and bandleader. In this conversation, we dive into what it means to lead a band from the front, the creative challenges that come with stepping outside one's comfort zone, getting lost in practice, constantly pushing yourself as a musician and of course, the story behind how 'Led By Vultures' came about and where the project may be headed. For more information on Brian Tichy or his work, please search for him across all socials or visit www.briantichy.com.For further information on Travis Marc or 'Musicians-Mentor' website, please visit www.musicians-mentor.com As usual, thanks for checking out the channel and if you're getting anything useful from my content, please feel free to comment, like, share and subscribe, thank you. Episode 97 - Lenny Castro (Toto, RHCP, Fleetwood Mac)
2026/04/28
Today on the show I speak with percussion legend - Lenny Castro. Lenny is an American based musician who at this point in his career is probably one of the most recorded percussionists in musical history, having played on hundreds (if not thousands of records). Some of the artists he has worked with include 'The Rolling Stones', The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Adele, Toto, Red Hot Chili Peppers, U2, Elton John and even one of my absolute favorites, The New Radicals - to name just a few. In addition to his work with all these incredible artists Lenny also recently started putting out music of his own. His debut record entitled 'Hands Of Silk' is an absolute masterclass on percussion tone which I can't recommend enough. During our conversation, Lenny and I talk about his initial introductions to music, his love of groove, AI, music careers, touring and even his relationship with the late great Jeff Porcaro. Episode 96 - The Daywalkers (Alex MacDonald + Janson Lohmeyer)
2026/04/14
Today on the show I speak with 'The Daywalkers' band leaders - Alex Harris MacDonald (vocals/washboard) + Janson Lohmeyer keyboardist/vocals. This was a tough interview for me to post because unfortunately Janson Lohmeyer tragically passed away, only a few days after we had this conversation. I wrestled with myself as to whether or not I should still put it out, but ultimately decided I would - as I believe it could serve as a nice reminder to all of us that knew Janson, as to what a kind soul he truly was. Over the decades 'The Daywalkers' (who fuse Louisiana Roots Music with Cajun, Pop and Zydeco) have developed a reputation as a high quality live band, attracting visiting from all over the world to see the group while visiting the city of New Orleans. Among many notable accolades, the band have released three albums of original material and individually, Janson has appeared on releases by Adam Duritz (Counting Crows), Lucinda Williams and Susan Cowsill. While Alex has held residencies at various Blue Note Jazz Venues with Joe Sample in Japan, has been inducted into the Zydeco Blues Trailride Hall Of Fame class and toured extensively with Louisiana favorite Dwayne Dopsie. During our conversation, we talk about the Bourbon Street scene, hurricane Katrina, musicians healthcare, touring and an array of other topics. For more information on 'The Daywalkers' please visit www.thedaywalkersneworleans.com or visit the band on Facebook. Once again, my deepest condolences to the Lohmeyer family and all of Janson's bandmates and family for the massive loss experienced by his passing.
