It's 1988 and Holly Butcher has just been released from John Wilkes Booth Juvenile Detention Hall on limited release. Grandma Butcher is nearly one hundred years old and that means it's time for a big ol' Family Reunion. So Holly, her brother Hall, and their best friends Mort Scoville and Manifold Redding are heading to the mysterious Old House in the Blackbeard Delta, where old secrets and new secrets collide. Plus theres a treasure.

Late into the evening, in the den of the old house, Grandma Butcher spins a tale. A tale of presidents, betrayal, pirate treasure, and a centuries old treasure hunt. A family legacy, the Zakwan Bannani Diamond. Well the Butcher children would be hard pressed to ignore such a tantalising adventure and so immediately set to solving the first clue. Unfortunately for them, sinister figures wait in the wings. It seems there will be some competition.

So soon has the clues left behind by Clementine Butcher led the Butcher Children into mortal peril. An over flowing wishing well in the back yard! A wolfman (sort of) roaming through the swamps! And hanging from a bough of the old hanging tree the corpse of someone dressed like George Washington! From a window on the top floor of the old house a sinister figure watches, an enemy? A ghost? Some unrelated family member? Only time will tell.

The treasure hunt has led the Butcher children into the heart of Roughhousing, the old town library, where a statue of Zakwan Bannani holds more secrets than one would at first assume. And so the mysteries pile ever higher, who’s answering machine to they keep getting? What is the assistant librarian hiding? How is Scheming Uncle Beurogard involved? And what does any of this have to do with the three missing costumes from the town costume shop?

Well Holly went and scared off those Roughhousing teens and now the gang must return once again to the old house, their absence barely noticed, to join the family dinner. But all is not well, as Beautiful Uncle Raymond has an announcement to make. It seems acquiring Clementine Butcher's treasure is worth more to the family matriarch than either butcher child could have ever anticipated.

The clues have led the Butcher Children to the old Roughhousing graveyard, but they are not alone, in more ways than one. Scheming Uncle Beurogard and his devious allies are here as well, searching one assumes, for the same thing. Success hinges now on the quick wits of the butcher children and some help from a deeply unlikely place.

BUTCHERBALL! BUTCHERBALL! Come one come all to witness the greatest game ever designed, played by Butchers as far back as time immemorial. A basket, a cannonball, and a very special trophy. Can the Butcher Children win the game they have been all but bred to play!?

Today the Old House will witness a game of Butcherball that just might decide the fate of the entire Butcher clan, or at the very least prove instrumental in squashing a rivalry over a decade old. An olive branch, extended by Holly and Hall toward their adversarial cousins, in the form of an old bell. And just in time too, for as the battle for the Zakwan Bannani Diamond intensifies they’re going to need all the help they can get.

Hundred’s of years ago George Washington’s men destroyed a humble pirate in the name of vanity. As, surely, the good President of these United States would not have sent his men so deep into the Delta otherwise. Truly, Zakwan Benani was the victim of a weak man’s pride, more than anything else. And now here he lies, buried deep beneath the city that was once his, resting. Resting and perhaps also waiting.

Deep beneath the ancient city of New Phoenicia the battle for the lost treasure of Zakwan Bennani reaches its final bloody end. The Butcher children are at a disadvantage, for despite everything, Scheming Uncle Beauregard is an adult. And he has a gun. What’s more the waterlogged pirate ship of the great Zakwan Bennani threatens to collapse at any moment. Who will clutch the diamond in their hand when all is said and done, and, more importantly, what does it truly mean to be a Butcher?
