EP57 – Systemic Effects and Comparative Pharmacology with Robbie! | Anaesthetic Primary Topic | Inhalational Anaesthetics | CT10
2026/10/18
Today we are back with Robbie for part 2. My audio dropped out few times in our meeting so had to re-record a few parts (so the audio might sound different). We start by looking into MAC and its definitions (01:18). Then go and review the inhalational agents firstly looking at differences and similarities for pharmaceutic factors (07:38), PD factors (12:33), PK and toxic factors (21:42). The we review the past SAQs (28:47). These are big topics and my brain hurts but I hope you enjoy huge thanks to Robbie. Thanks for listening.
EP56 – Live Practice Viva with Carl | CT10
2026/10/04
I'm back with another 'Live Practice Viva'. Thanks to Carl for doing this and best of luck for the exam!! I hope you get some technical and non-technical skills from the video. As per previous episodes we covered two topics which were: Uterotonics (02:52) and Cardiac Output Phenylephrine (07:52) We then go through some feedback. Hope you guys enjoy and thanks for watching! As always if you have any feedback let me know at [email protected]
EP55 – Structure-Activity, Volatile Kinetics plus more with Robbie! | Anaesthetic Primary Topic | Inhalational Anaesthetics | CT10
2026/09/23
It's a jam-packed episode today as we start our new series on 'Inhalational Anaesthetics.' To help me cover the topic I'm joined by Robbie, fresh from passing (and smashing) the primary exam. We cover a lot today and my brain is fried after this episode. Strating off with MOA for inhalational agents (02:21), structure activity relationships (07:24) and defining the ideal inhalational agent (14:48). Then we delve into the ever confusion partition coefficients (16:21), wash-in kinetics (24:19), concentration and second gas effect (31:36) and wash-out kinetics (36:12). As always we end with a review of recent SAQs (40:40). This was a lot of fun and huge thanks to Robbie. Thanks for listening.
EP54 – Stomach & Digestion | Anaesthetic Primary Topic | Gastrointestinal | CT10
2026/08/19
Today's episode completes our 'Gastrointestinal' Series. The topic today might be often overlooked but clinically is very relevant. I start by reviewing the physiology of swallowing (01:28) which lends itself nicely to factors preventing reflux of gastric contents (07:35). Then we examine the control of gastric motility and emptying (15:56) and the composition of gastric fluid as well (23:44). Our last LO looks at the physiology of nausea and vomiting (31:23). As always, we review the past SAQs to finish (34:40). Thank for listening.
EP53 – Liver Physiology | Anaesthetic Primary Topic | Gastrointestinal | CT10
2026/07/17
It's been a bit of a break between episodes, but I have been on paternity leave. Today we start our new topic of 'Gastrointestinal Physiology' looking first at Liver Physiology. This is a big topic to cover and an equally important organ. I start with addressing the functional anatomy (01:43). Then this allows us to appreciate the many functions of the liver (06:48) followed by reviewing hepatic blood flow and the factors that control it (19:33). The last LO for today is assessing the laboratory investigation of the liver (31:52). Finally, we look at the previous SAQs (and cicm is really good for this!) (39:50). As always thanks for listening!
EP52 – Ultrasound & Neuro-monitoring | Anaesthetic Primary Topic | Equipment & Safety | CT10
2026/05/25
In today's final 'Equipment and Safety' topic I cover the much-loved topic of Ultrasound with a small part on neuromonitoring (to add onto Ep38) with a focus on SedLine. First, we go through the principles of USS (01:18) followed by a review on the mode of doppler (14:58). I thought I would touch on SedLine today because we have previously reviewed BIS but now this is becoming increasingly popular and may even be asked in the future (20:49). There are only 2 SAQs to go through at the end (25:48). As always thanks for listening!
EP51 – Live Practice Viva with Robbie and Special Guest Derek | CT10
2026/04/19
Time for another 'Live Practice Viva'. Thanks to Robbie for doing this and Derek for coming back to be a examiner!! I hope you get some technical and non-technical skills from the video. As per previous episodes we covered four topics which were: Desflurane (06:23), Phenylephrine (011:23), Haemostasis (16:23) and Lignocaine (21:23). We then go through some feedback. Hope you guys enjoy and thanks for watching! As always if you have any feedback let me know at [email protected]
EP50 – Suction & Scavenging, Electrical Safety & Diathermy | Anaesthetic Primary Topic | Equipment & Safety | CT10
2026/03/25
In today's Part 2 of 'Equipment and Safety' I cover "Suction & Scavenging, Electrical Safety & Diathermy." This was a much longer episode then anticipated! I start first with reviewing suction (01:06) then scavenging (08:23) with an additional part on environmental impact (14:53). Then we go into detail regarding electrical safety in the theatre (19:29). To end our LO's I look at how diathermy works (34:55) and LASER (41:55). Luckily there weren't many SAQs to cover today (47:55) but they all have low pass rates. Thanks for listening!
EP49 – 2026.1 – Mini Review | CT10
2026/03/03
Today I give my quick thoughts on the most recent SAQ paper. I look at trends in the new, the repeat and the 're-word' questions. Well done to everyone who sat and for those sitting hopefully this gives you some insight into what to expect. Thanks for listening!
EP48 – Maximise your learning with Maurice Hennessy | CT10
2026/02/15
Today I am joined by Maurice, now a retired learning and development facilitator with ANZCA. We are releasing our newly created education tool "Conversation Starters in the Operating Theatre" available on the website. We start are conversation today talking about the concept of a 'curious learner' (07:56). Then we move on to discuss how we can suspend judgment when it comes to teaching (11:10) and how to make the trainee-supervisor work well with the aid of FAST goals (17:09). Finally, we talk about 6 learning strategies the strategies shared by The Learning Scientists.
