When Your Spouse Won't Quit | #62
2026/08/27
What happens when nicotine addiction doesn't just affect the quitter - but the person standing beside them? In Episode #62 of the Kill The Can Podcast, we're looking at nicotine addiction from a different perspective: the spouse. After reviewing hundreds of comments left over the years on the KillTheCan.org Spousal Support page, some powerful themes emerge. Spouses talk about hidden cans, broken promises, repeated quit attempts, lost trust, intimacy, withdrawal, children watching their parents use nicotine, and the painful question: "Why aren't we enough to make them quit?" In this episode, we talk about both sides of that relationship - including: Why you can't make someone else quit nicotine Why lying and hiding dip can damage a relationship more than the tobacco itself How nicotine addiction affects trust and intimacy What children see when a parent uses nicotine Supporting someone through nicotine withdrawal Why withdrawal isn't an excuse to mistreat your family The difference between supporting a quitter and policing their quit Setting boundaries with someone who won't quit Why the decision to quit ultimately has to belong to the addict Why there is still hope - even after decades of nicotine use If you're trying to quit, this episode may give you a perspective you haven't considered before. If you love someone who's addicted to nicotine, this one's especially for you. Nicotine Isn't Killing You. So Why Quit? | #61
2026/08/20
A Twitter exchange started with a simple question: If nicotine isn't what's killing smokers, why should anyone bother quitting it? It's a fair question—and one that gets to the heart of a much bigger debate about tobacco harm reduction, nicotine addiction, and what it actually means to quit. In Episode 61 of the Kill The Can Podcast, we look at the difference between reducing harm and eliminating dependence. If someone leaves cigarettes or smokeless tobacco behind but continues using nicotine for the rest of their life, is that a successful quit? Is lifelong nicotine dependence really a problem if the delivery method is significantly less harmful? And where should harm reduction fit into the quitting process? We also dig into the role of Big Tobacco in today's nicotine market, the financial incentives behind keeping people dependent on nicotine, and why funding sources deserve scrutiny without automatically invalidating an argument. Most importantly, this episode asks a question every nicotine user should consider: If nicotine were completely harmless, would you still want to be addicted to it? At KillTheCan.org, our goal has never simply been a safer way to use nicotine. It's helping people reach the point where they don't need nicotine at all. Because there's a difference between being safer and being free.     Start Quitting Dip and Nicotine Today! https://www.killthecan.org/start-here/ 🔗 Join the Discussion: https://www.killthecan.org/discord/ ✉️ Get Long-Term Quit Perspective With The Quit Log: https://www.killthecan.org/newsletter/ Thanks for listening, and remember... Pressure | #59
2026/06/04
For years, I thought pressure was a reason to dip. A stressful day. A big moment. A tough loss. A hard conversation. Pressure always seemed to provide another excuse. This week, I found myself reflecting on my son's high school baseball career as it came to an end. Last season, he pitched a complete game in the state championship, allowing zero earned runs in a heartbreaking 1-0 loss. This year, he carried the expectations that come with being the ace of a championship-caliber staff and took the ball whenever his team needed him most. As I watched the final chapter unfold, I realized something: not once did I think about nicotine. In this episode, I share the emotions of watching a young man grow up, the pressure that comes with high expectations, and the realization that quitting tobacco didn't just help me survive life's biggest moments—it allowed me to be fully present for them. Whether you're a parent, an athlete, or simply someone learning to navigate life's pressures without nicotine, I hope this story resonates with you. Stay strong. Stay quit. Words Matter When Quitting Nicotine | #58
2026/03/05
In this episode of the Kill The Can Podcast, Chewie shares a surprising social media debate that challenged one of the most basic assumptions about quitting nicotine. A public health advocate argued that the words addict and addiction are stigmatizing — and even suggested that nicotine itself should not be considered addictive. Chewie breaks down the conversation, discusses the cold turkey philosophy of quitting nicotine, and asks the community for feedback. Can anyone quit nicotine with dedication and will? Or do people need nicotine replacement tools to succeed? Let’s Talk About Tomorrow | #55
2025/07/23
Tomorrow marks 19 years since I quit nicotine. In this personal episode, I reflect on the gratitude I feel toward the Kill The Can community and the accountability, support, brotherhood, and sisterhood that have helped me remain nicotine-free for nearly two decades. July 24 also marks two years since my father passed away from lung cancer. I discuss his decision not to reveal the full extent of his diagnosis, the anger I experienced after his death, and the understanding and love that eventually replaced it. Tomorrow is important, but it is never promised. All we truly have is today. Today, we post roll. Today, we make the promise. Today, we stay quit. What does freedom from smokeless tobacco actually feel like? In Episode #49 of the Kill The Can Podcast, Chewie reflects on attending WWE SummerSlam and taking a family vacation without thinking about dip even once — a stark contrast to the years when every event or trip meant worrying about cans, spitters and the next dip. He also discusses seasonal triggers and why quitters should be prepared when old routines unexpectedly bring cravings back. Then Chewie answers listener comments and questions about exercise during nicotine withdrawal, nicotine-free alternatives, ZYN and Rogue, gum recession, tapering versus quitting cold turkey, difficulty concentrating after quitting nicotine and more.
