Tracy-Ann Leith: The one with the Emotional Heart!
2026/10/01
In ep 191 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, Tracy-Ann Leith joins Sam and Mark to talk about the right side of caring for a mental health charity script. How can you be empathetic without tipping into saccharine? As it was National Poetry Day yesterday, we have a script all about Mary Shelly, and the very unorthodox things that happened to her husband's body! There's amusement in the script, but also a deep emotional bond. Our wildcards cover the girlguides, a bored museum tourguide, and a guide as to how not to behave on a blind date. Our VO question this week is all about what producers and directors should think about when they hire a neurodivergent voice actor. Get involved! Have you got a Wildcard suggestion that we should try or an idea for the show? Send it to us via Mark or Sam's social media or email it directly to [email protected] Script 1 Trelawny gave the heart to Mary Shelley, and it was found among her things when she died and buried with her at St. Peter’s Church in Bournemouth. So while Shelley’s ashes are over in the Protestant Cemetery in Rome, his heart is in England. Keeping a physical memento of a loved one was considered pretty unremarkable in the 19th century. And it wasn’t unheard of for a person’s heart to be buried separately to the rest of the body. Chopin’s heart was preserved in a crystal jar (which the Nazis later stole). Thomas Hardy’s heart was cut out to be buried in his hometown of Stinsford, Dorset, but was then part-eaten by a cat. Script 2 Everyone should have access to quality mental health care, no matter where they live or what circumstances they‘re in. But where do people turn? Mental health affects everyone, including health-care workers, but finding the right support when you need it in a way you can access it is harder than it looks. For many people, seeking help means knocking on a lot of doors at a time when their resources are already depleted. Finding no clear pathway, meeting one barrier after another, they often give up before getting the mental health care they need. We're on our summer hols! So here's a repeat of one of our favourite episodes of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, when Noni Lewis joined Sam and Mark in April 2024 to talk about approaching royal docs, the beauty of the Welsh accent, and we get steamy at a builder's merchants! Get involved! Have you got a Wildcard suggestion that we should try or an idea for the show? Susan quickly became Elizabeth's constant companion and loyal friend through thick and thin. She was so attached to Susan that she insisted on taking her along on her honeymoon with Prince Philip in 1947, hiding the dog under a pile of blankets in their carriage to the station directly after the wedding. Their bond was unbreakable, transcending even the formalities of royal protocol. Script 2 We’re H.O.T. - the Builders Merchants with gorgeous supplies. Lozza Gilbert: The one with the Dystopian Teenagers!
2026/09/10
In ep 190 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, Lozza Gilbert joins Sam and Mark to talk about a dystopian future that smooshes Mad Max and Grange Hill together in a challenging dramatic script! We learn what you need to ask a director before you record a dramatic scene - and we discover the knack of delivering the problem and the solution at a different pace! There's a technical little script, we're left wondering if some corporate clients "polish" their scripts through AI, and writers take note! We discuss how to change a formal sounding script to a chatty sounding script just by adding a single word! Our VO question this week is all about how the industry can work with disabled performers to understand their needs better. Get involved! Have you got a Wildcard suggestion that we should try or an idea for the show? Send it to us via Mark or Sam's social media or email it directly to [email protected] Script 1 Their existing single-camera-to-single-PC setup meant that whilst participants seated at the far end of the table could be seen by remote users, the faces of those to the left and right were obscured when engaging with others in the room. So how did we solve this? By introducing a separate PC for each of the three cameras, each group within the meeting room are presented in their own window. This allows remote users to clearly see all participants and their reactions. A piece of creative thinking that has delivered real visual meeting equity. Script 2 Reflex: What is it, Jo-C? It says 'Rez High’ (whatever that is) and then 'Welcome Back to the Best Days'. And then something else has worn off. I'll have to open it to find out. I’m not doing that until I dry it off properly. I do want a good look. The real problem will be getting it past my mum. Dogwood: If it's so 'very heavy’ then I vote Jo-C carries it. Reflex: She’s got the muscles. She's absolutely the right woman for the job. Two out of three votes carry it. And I'll deal with my mum. We'd love your feedback - and if you listen on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, hit the follow button today! **Listen to all of our podcasts here - you can also watch on YouTube, or say to your smart speaker "Play How Do You Say That?!" James Showers: The one with the Clippety Cloppety Horse
2026/09/03
In ep 189 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, James Showers joins Sam and Mark to talk about bringing science fiction to life as a very posh butler on a spaceship - but it's no Kryton from Red Dwarf! We delight in rich grand-fatherly tones, and have talk of theme parks, ducklings and lemons! Plus how you can make a story set in the 1920s feel real for a contemporary audience. Our VO question this week is all about how and why you choose voice acting as a career in later life. Get involved! Have you got a Wildcard suggestion that we should try or an idea for the show? Send it to us via Mark or Sam's social media or email it directly to [email protected] Script 1 Charles Burdett was lazily reclining in his favourite armchair, absorbed in a rare book on alchemy and black magic, when his sister answered a summons at the door. In addition to managing the household affairs of the flat in which she and Burdett lived alone, her duties also consisted in scrutinising the many visitors. Most of them could be persuaded to call at the book shop in Cecil Court. Others, whose cases were urgent, were admitted to the modest London flat, thus infringing on Burdett's only recreation, reading and study. Script 2 The Time Scoop is fundamentally incapable of abducting an entire individual. The paperwork would be insurmountable. Imagine a candle. The flame dances upon the wall whilst the candle itself never moves. Our guests are rather like that: their lives remain rooted safely in their own place and time, whilst only their illumination is permitted to travel. Eventually, as all light must, it returns to its source. The principle was first articulated by Doctor Euphemia Bracket-Weft during the regrettable Incident of the Recursive Picnic... Dan Pye: The one with the Feisty Bingo Balls!
2026/08/27
In ep 188 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, Dan Pye joins Sam and Mark to talk about a multi-character script that's full of balls - bingo balls! We look at making a museum audio guide for kids, and how you can lighten a script for the target audience. We consider what happens when you're asked to read both characters in a script because the other person hasn't been cast yet, and what pauses to leave so an editor has clear line of sight! Our obsessions are vitamins and motorways, and Dan seems like trouble right from the off!! Our VO question this week is all about how much chit-chat you should engage in down the line with clients and producers. Get involved! Have you got a Wildcard suggestion that we should try or an idea for the show? Send it to us via Mark or Sam's social media or email it directly to [email protected] Script 1 Look carefully at the portrait of Elizabeth Garrett Anderson. Take your time – look at it for at least a whole minute. What can you see? What is Elizabeth Garrett Anderson wearing? • She is wearing a plain black academic gown (showing that she has graduated from university). • She has chosen to pose in her gown rather than in fashionable clothing. • She is also wearing a simple pearl necklace which had cost sixpence. She added this because the artist asked her to wear some jewellery to brighten up her outfit. Script 2 B11: Alright Number 9, ready for tonight? B9: You know me, Legs Eleven. Always up for a bit of Buzz Bingo! B11. It's what bingo balls like us are made for! B9: So before we roll out there… reminder time? B11: Go on then. B9: Bingo's exciting, but we all need-- Both: To keep it fun! B11: Set a budget before you start- B9: And stick to it!- B11: No chasing. No "one more coz I feel lucky." 2026/08/20
In ep 187 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, Louis Critchley joins Sam and Mark to talk about how energetic you have to go with a football commentator style commercial script. Is high energy through the whole read just too much? Is subtlety needed or wanted, and when you find a niche - you should exploit it. We explore how to play a baddie without it being over the top... Mark brings some bruiser energy, and we explore how to lean in on dialogue to get intimate with the listener. Our obsessions are sculptures and weeds, and there's a story the Royal Mail might like to hear. Our wildcards are a matriarch dragon, a little boy and an adorable kitten! Allison Cossitt: The one with the Full Blown Argument!
2026/08/13
In ep 186 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, US voice actor Allison Cossitt joins Sam and Mark to talk about how to perform an argument when you go in mid-way! Sam brings an extract from a multi-cast audio book, set way into the distant future. We examine the dread of doing a cold read in a session (or on the show!) and completely messing it up. Mark is handed some very honest feedback, and we reflect on why it's always easier when you've heard someone else read a script first - but the job is working it out for yourself! We're clowning around with an international softball team, there's dark roast deliciousness and a reference to Little Alex Horne!! Our VO question this week is all about why you put off becoming an voice actor for as long as you did? Get involved! Have you got a Wildcard suggestion that we should try or an idea for the show? Send it to us via Mark or Sam's social media or email it directly to [email protected] Script 1 The last question was asked for the first time, half in jest, on May 21, 2061, at a time when humanity first stepped into the light. The question came about as a result of a five dollar bet over highballs, and it happened this way: Alexander Adell and Bertram Lupov were two of the faithful attendants of Multivac. As well as any human beings could, they knew what lay behind the cold, clicking, flashing face -- miles and miles of face -- of that giant computer. Script 2 Vernon - I am a living, breathing woman, right in front of you. I’m not some story you can - STOP. Turn back around. Look at me. You do not get to ignore me. You don’t have that privilege. [VERNON stares. The silence between them is palpable.] I know you’re hurt. I know. But you can’t think this is a surprise. You know things have changed between us. This is the most we’ve spoken in months. Stop. It’s too late. That part has already been written, Vernon. No one short of god can change it now. Magnus Rook: The one with the Tinkling Ice Cubes!
2026/08/06
In ep 185 of “How Do You Say That?!” sponsored by britishvoiceover.co.uk, Magnus Rook joins Sam and Mark to talk about how a cold read is sometimes impossible, because you need to know what's coming next in order to structure the delivery. We approach a charity script with some conversational levity, but without throwing away the main points, and discover that some people work in very different ways. We also ask is it ever worth breaking a script down line by line, and do you build a list, or give each item a slightly different flavour? Oh, then there's the whole debate about the abbreviation "i.e."!! Obsessions are to do with summer and the heat... and we hear a story of a double-decker nightmare! Our VO question this week is all about how doing other things apart from voice acting can really bring a boost to your VA career. Get involved! Have you got a Wildcard suggestion that we should try or an idea for the show? Send it to us via Mark or Sam's social media or email it directly to [email protected] Script 1 Did you know that everyone on the planet is just six social connections away from each other? Community-based volunteers are the social glue between individuals, groups and organisations. They boost community cohesion, bond people together and bridge differences. Within any community 20% of people are great at getting things done. Volunteers are ordinary people but they can achieve extraordinary things. Their super talents are simple: practical skills, local knowledge, common sense, familiarity with different situations, a myriad of contacts - and the ability to discover the stories and traditions that make a community special. Script 2 The seminal example, of course, is using bow wow to mean a dog and not just to imitate a dog’s barking, providing the impetus for the theory’s moniker. In a somewhat similar vein, the pooh-pooh theory hypothesized that language evolved from the interjections (ah!) and emotional cries humans made, like the primordial grunt that still escapes when you painfully stub your toe. Müller’s own idea was that sounds themselves carried intrinsic meaning, like a low-¬pitched sound giving off a sense of something big, i.e., as in a blob (low vowel) compared to the smaller sounding bleeb (high vowel). About our guest: Magnus Rook is a German actor and voice actor based in London. 98% of his work is in German, but he’s branching out more into the English language market these days. He’s an audiobook narrator with the occasional commercial thrown in (best of both worlds!) When he’s not in the booth, he’s bouldering, reading, and appearing on stages every once in a while – most recently as Hamlet's dead father and as part of Fracassantes Collective at the Bush Theatre.
