In the run-up to a new exhibition at Marres, House for Contemporary Culture in Maastricht, director Valentijn Byvanck interviews participating artists, performers and curators. In this episode he sits down with choreographer and dancer Amparo González Sola during her research and ongoing performance Gestures as Portals. Gestures are central to González Sola’s practice. She approaches them as portals to memory and connectors between bodies, shaped by context, inherited through generations, and always relational. During her time at Marres, she and co-performer Leandro de Souza worked with the gestures found in the rooms: those of the performers, the visitors, the workers, and traces from the former exhibition Vultures & Fireflies by Mexican artist Alejandro Galván. In the run-up to a new exhibition at Marres, House for Contemporary Culture in Maastricht, director Valentijn Byvanck interviews participating artists, performers and curators. For the exhibition ‘Vultures & Fireflies’ by Mexican artist Alejandro Galván, he sits down with co-curator Tonatiuh López. Among others, they are a freelance curator, writer, researcher, and member of the Ecatepec Contemporary Art Museum (MArCE) and Circo Crico collectives. Vultures & Fireflies is a Divina Commedia of the raw existence in the Mexican city of Nezahualcóyotl, brought to life through paintings, transfer prints, sculptures, and film. In this powerful chronicle of Mexico, Galván merges elements from tabloid news, comic books, heavy metal, and folklore. His work appears to restore balance in a world marked by injustice and corruption—what Galván calls a vivid dream of Mexican society. A book of the same name was published alongside the exhibition. De tuin van Marres is een wilde stadstuin, bevolkt door een grote hoeveelheid vogels, insecten, vlinders en kikkers. De tuin bevat fruitbomen, een moestuin en kruidenbedden. Het is met ca. 1000 m2 de grootste openbare stadstuin van Maastricht. In deze aflevering kun je luisteren naar een interview van Petra Quadvlieg met Hans Engelbrecht, verantwoordelijk voor de ontwikkeling van de stadstuin van Marres. Hij is een ecologisch hovenier en verweeft cultuurhistorie, ecologie en de omgeving op esthetische wijze. Dit resulteert in een verbinding tussen tuinen en landschappelijke plekken waarin de natuur en natuurlijke processen centraal staan. Petra Quaedvlieg is journalist en schrijver. In this episode, presented by Caspar Stalenhoef, you will listen to three stories from The Invisible Collection selected by guest curator Daniel Rivera. The guest curator guides us through the expanding Invisible Collection. Daniel is a freelance classically trained musician and volunteer at Marres. He studied Arts and Culture at Maastricht University. The three excerpts he chose demonstrate how art can disrupt your daily routine, provoke unexpected reactions, and change your perception. We hear three art stories, including one from Claire, where she describes her physical reaction triggered by George Orwell's "1984". Talisha recalls an intriguing yet eerie image she saw during the "Body Worlds" exhibition. Artist Stéphanie Saadé describes the aging of the artwork “Becoming a Painting”. The Invisible Collection focuses on people's stories about their favorite artwork. It's an online art collection that you can't see, but can hear. Marres gathers stories where people of all ages and backgrounds share their art experiences. In the run-up to a new exhibition at Marres, House for Contemporary Culture in Maastricht, director Valentijn Byvanck interviews participating artists, performers and curators. For the exhibition ‘Opaque Spirits’ he sits down with Peruvian artists Arturo Kameya and Claudia Martínez Garay.  Arturo Kameya has transformed Marres into a hotel where the ghosts of the failed Peruvian state have taken up residence. The building’s facade will feature massive paintings showing contemporary Messianic imagery. Inside, visitors can find various scenes, such as a tiled bathhouse that functions as a restaurant, a multi-armed beer fountain, and a large upstairs room with mechanical fish. The hotel’s interior is an allegory of the Peruvian state, reflecting a world of appearances in which truth is less important than what is evoked out of sheer necessity. ‘Opaque Spirits’ opens on March 7th and runs to May 26th 2024 at Marres in Maastricht.

For the exhibition ‘Goodbye to Love’, he sits down with artist James Webb, an artist known for site-specific interventions and installations. His practice often involves sound, found objects, and text, invoking references to literature, cinema, and the minimalist traditions. Webb transforms objects, techniques, and forms by placing them in new settings, generating unique tensions. These tensions merge Webb's diverse academic influences, encompassing religion, theatre, and advertising, to explore thought-provoking questions about belief systems and communication in today's world.  James Webb (1975, South Africa) lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden. 

In de aanloop van een nieuwe tentoonstelling bij Marres, Huis voor Hedendaagse Cultuur in Maastricht, interviewt directeur Valentijn Byvanck de deelnemende kunstenaars, performers en curatoren. De tentoonstelling Plantiarchy, ontwikkeld door het kunstenaarscollectief Sunflower Soup, verbindt een sprookjesachtige werkelijkheid met klimaatactivisme. De wereld wordt letterlijk op zijn kop gezet, door middel van papieren planten en bomen die ondersteboven door alle ruimtes van Marres groeien. Ook is de (pseudo)wetenschappelijke documentaire The Plantiarchy te zien, waarin de geschiedenis, het heden en de toekomst van een fictieve, invasieve plantensoort wordt onthuld. Valentijn Byvanck gaat met de leden van Sunflower Soup in gesprek over onderwerpen zoals de totstandkoming van Plantiarchy en Sunflower Soup, samenwerken binnen een collectief, (klimaat)activisme en de plantenwereld.

The Painted Bird An immersive project for which all walls, corridors, stairwell, floors and ceilings of the monumental house of Marres were painted. The exhibition showed a series of beautiful and frightening environments. Like the black supermarket and the purple aquarium, a wisteria room, terrifying portraits and washed-up refugees. SoundtrackArtists Frank Koolen and Kim David Bots created an extensive soundtrack with personal commentary voice, music and sound effects. The soundtrack was part of the exhibition and led you from room to room, from dream to nightmare. Witwasdag (Whitewashing Day)On the last day of the exhibition, Marres invited the public to help paint the colossal painting The Painted Bird white. The 12 rooms were opened to lusty whitewashers, greasers, lovers of crisp white, good friends and faulty fans of Marres.

The Painted Bird Een totaalproject waarvoor alle muren, gangen, het trappenhuis, vloeren en plafonds van het monumentale huis Marres werden beschilderd. De tentoonstelling toonde een reeks prachtige en beangstigende omgevingen. Zoals de zwarte supermarkt en het purperen aquarium, een wisteriakamer, angstaanjagende portretten of aangespoelde vluchtelingen. SoundtrackKunstenaars Frank Koolen en Kim David Bots maakten een uitgebreide soundtrack met persoonlijke commentaarstem, muziek en geluidseffecten. De soundtrack maakte deel uit van de tentoonstelling en leidde je van kamer naar kamer, van droom tot nachtmerrie. WitwasdagOp de laatste dag van de tentoonstelling nodigde Marres het publiek uit om mee te helpen de kolossale schildering The Painted Bird wit te schilderen. De 12 kamers werden opengezet voor lustige witwassers, smeerkezen, liefhebbers van kraakwit, goeie vrienden en foute fans van Marres. 

A lawyer who is defending her client, and an instrument maker who is tuning a violin will most probably refer to their activity as work, while the musician playing the same violin or a belly dancer taking the stage will probably refer to their work as performance. Most of us would not find it hard to see the performance of the latter two as work, but we might not have considered that most of the work we all do is in some way a performance, and that we tend to call upon different versions of ourselves to perform that work. In this episode, Marres director Valentijn Byvanck talks with visual artist Philippine Hoegen, psychotherapist Carolien Stikker and theater writer Nirav Christophe about versions of ourselves performing work. TRAINING THE SENSES Knowledge is not only acquired visually at schools through language and text books. Learning involves all of our senses: we learn by listening, tasting, smelling, touching – and even by using our intuition. In the Training the Senses program, participants explore and discover a new vocabulary for their senses and a new way to transmit experience and acquire knowledge. Training the Senses is an ongoing series of workshops by Marres since 2016. The podcast conversations (since 2022) are moderated by Valentijn Byvanck, director of Marres. ABOUT PHILIPPINE HOEGEN Philippine Hoegen is a visual artist and performer living in Brussels. She is currently a researcher at the HKU, Utrecht, and Caradt, Avans University, Breda, with the project Performing Working. She did a series of presentations at Kunsthal Ghent titled What is Work? (03/2021-04/2022); and published ANOTHER VERSION: Thinking Through Performing (Onomatopee, Eindhoven, 2020). ABOUT NIRAV CHRISTOPHE  Nirav Christophe writes theater texts based on improvizations by actors, libretti for opera and texts for music and dance theatre. As professor in Performative Making Processes at HKU Utrecht School of the Arts, his emphasis has been on projects in which artists collaborate with non-artistic domains. With his book Ten Thousand Idiots (2018), he has developed a model from the concept of ‘polyphony’ to describe and analyze these kinds of practices. ABOUT CAROLIEN STIKKER   Carolien Stikker was trained as an artist specialized in photography in London (1982) and New York (1986) and worked as an artist and art teacher before she started a practice for psychotherapy in 2015 in Brussels and the Maastricht area. She is trained as an integrative humanistic therapist, with a specialization in Voice Dialogue. This method is based on the idea that we all have different aspects and “voices” that are part of how we function.

Je gaat in deze aflevering, gepresenteerd door Caspar Stalenhoef, luisteren naar Maika, August en Zander. Ze beschrijven alle drie kunstwerken waarin de aandacht uitgaat naar bloemen. Maika begint met een schilderij van Vincent van Gogh. Hij heeft het een jaar voor zijn dood geschilderd, in 1889, het jaar waarin hij zich vrijwillig had laten opnemen. Je kunt ook luisteren naar August, die door deze geschilderde appelboom voortaan heel anders naar echte appels kijkt. Zander zag in Zuid-Afrika voor het eerst dit schilderij van Wole Lagunju. De Onzichtbare Collectie is een online kunstcollectie die je niet kan zien, maar wel kunt horen. Het project werd in 2018 door Mediamatic Amsterdam ontwikkeld voor slechtzienden die zich met de beschrijvingen van kunstkenners een beeld kunnen vormen van kunstwerken. In 2019 nam Marres het stokje over en voegde een nieuwe laag toe door kunst in een brede context op te vatten. Sindsdien oogst Marres verhalen waarin mensen van alle leeftijden en achtergronden hun kunstervaring delen. De geluidsfragmenten van De Onzichtbare Collectie zijn voor iedereen te beluisteren, ongeacht je kennis van kunst. Ondertussen werkt Marres aan een Onzichtbaar Museum vol kunstverhalen.
