But by GUMBO, we finished this Project P.O.D! And thank goodness that we got to finish with this episode, and not the last episode, because this episode of Dirty Pair Flash 3 is the best of the bunch, the best single episode, you might say, of the entire Dirty Pair Flash project! Could you imagine if the last episode sucked? That would be the worst. And, well, that's it, everyone! We made it to the end of all things animated Dirty Pair, and possibly the end of this podcast. At the outset, we knew that this wouldn't be an easy episode. Our half-remembered recollections of watching it however long ago were, as it turns out, not enough to adequately prepare for the depths of despair that awaited us in this particular episode. You'll never believe it, but we've actually come back to finish off this Project POD for good. Or at least for now. For Dirty Pair FLASH, anyway! That's right, here it is, the first of five hot new episodes about the final five episodes of the Dirty Pair FLASH OVA series. Have I always capitalized FLASH like that in these descriptions? I don't know and there's no way to ever find out for sure. Anyway, Kei gets the spotlight in this episode as she learns how to raise a baby on the side of a mountain, while Yuri gets to play with all the new toys that the Pair acquired after blowing up the Lovely Angel at the end of the second series. That includes a brand new dang ol' Lovely Angel! It looks cool as hell! Let's all agree that this rules. The rest of the episode is all very straightforward. Twists? Turns? Not necessary, there's guns and explosions now. Did we enjoy it? Probably more than we expected! Am I dreading next episode? Maybe just a little, but maybe it's not so bad? We've done it, we've managed to get an episode out on our two-week cadence again, and doesn't it feel good to be back in the swing of things? Of course it does, don't bother answering that. The second (very good) episode of the second (very good) season of Dirty Pair Flash is full of mystery, monarchs, and music, and Kei and Yuri are here to get to the bottom of whatever the hell it is that happens at a prestigious girls' boarding school when you're seventeen (or pretending to be? It's unclear). We had a good time talking about this and you're sure to have a good time hearing about it. I should warn you all up front that there is discussion of multiple suicides in this one (it comes with the whole ghost story territory, I'm afraid), so if you are at all sensitive to such things, you are forewarned. Well it isn't pretty (the audio file) but we managed to hold Audacity to task long enough to edit down and publish this, our final episode dealing with the first series (season?) of Dirty Pair FLASH! It's hella climactic, the stakes are hella high, and the universe at large... doesn't actually care what the man on the television is ranting about. It's some of the best work that this first season does, and it wraps everything up as well as you can wrap a thing up in six episodes. Also, it turns out we liked this season! Another win for giving things a second chance, I guess. Dirty Pair FLASH season 1: it's better than you remember it being! Next up: the season that we remembered liking a lot! I've just watched the first episode in preparation for our imminent recording session for this season, and I gotta say: It's good! It's been a while, but we've come back after a break to crack open the somewhat curious artefact that is Dirty Pair: FLASH! We also decided now's as good a time as any to switch things up and do two episodes of the show in one episode of podcast, because the first and second seasons of FLASH are both short (6 and 5 episodes) and tell an ongoing story, as opposed to the more Mission of the Week format of previous incarnations of Dirty Pair. Does that mean these are longer and more of a pain in my ass to edit? Maybe a little. It wouldn't be the end of a series if we didn't provide an extra-long episode, and it wouldn't be the Dirty Pair if they didn't have something interesting to say. This time, we're talking about police corruption in a capitalist system and the only cure for it: collective action! Also, Kei and Yuri get mechs, giant space guns, and, of course, rocket launchers. Not all at once, though, that would be crazy! And, of course, Kei and Yuri demonstrate their knowledge of the various legal systems that coexist in the galaxy. And, well, that does it for the Dirty Pair! Everyone wave goodbye to the best gals to ever do it out there in the galaxy. It's the last time we'll see Kei and Yuri in this universe, I'm afraid. We've almost made it to the end of Dirty Pair 2, and what better penultimate episode could there be than yet another of Shinchiro Watanabe's doings? This time, we're off to a war-torn jungle planet to learn about the war economy and vengeance! Kei and Yuri are facing down a crooked arms dealer and a squadron of killer commandos, and it's all lavishly animated and appropriately somber in the right places. At some point we stopped keeping track of how many casualties there are in a given episode, but rest assured that for this episode, it's the highest casualty rate that doesn't involve the Pair accidentally blowing up a planet, space station, or major metropolitan area. War is Hell, everyone! Next time, a much lighter episode to finish off the series, and a run-time that, at this point, really needs to be edited down.
