Episode 26 - Dasha Emelianova
2026/10/23
Dasha speaks about her journey from Siberia to Mexico. She created Wild Roots Worldschooling Hubs in Mexico, offering programs tailored for families to gather for one week at a time and explore marine biology. Her next week-long program takes place over Thanksgiving Break (November 23–27) in Mexico City.
We discuss the challenges of this lifestyle, particularly how its transient nature strains friendships and makes it hard to find reliable staff who are only around for a single season. Dasha intentionally schedules her worldschooling gatherings in November and December, when the weather is pleasant, and sargassum seaweed is absent from the beaches.
Her key advice for new worldschooling families is to ignore others' opinions of your plans: don't take advice from people whose lives you wouldn't want to emulate.

Episode 25 - Bronwyn Ayla
2026/10/19
I left my conversation with Bronwyn feeling energized and educated. In this episode, we explore:
Landscape & Embodiment: How the unique landscapes in different parts of the world affect the way you feel in your body.Higher Education: The possibilities and pathways of exploring Post-Secondary Education in the US for your homeschooled child.Heritage & Ancestry: How Bronwyn and her daughter took a meaningful pilgrimage to Wales and Northern England to connect with their bloodline.Healing Modalities: How Bronwyn first learned about Reiki, along with other healing methods she uses to help the body feel well and alive. The Tong Shu Almanac: An introduction to the ancient Taoist almanac—available for free on Bronwyn’s website—which can easily be synced to your personal calendar.A Business Plan for Life: While historically used to guide when to plant, harvest, grow, and flourish, the Tong Shu serves as a broader life framework. Following it helps you align with natural cycles—knowing when to rest, when to launch new resolutions (hint: it isn’t on the Gregorian New Year of January 1st), and when to take active steps.Questioning Consensus Culture: A standout benefit of the worldschooling lifestyle—how changing locations helped Bronwyn’s daughter reject consensus culture and observe how concepts of "cool" shift from place to place.Words of Wisdom: Bronwyn’s top advice for families beginning their worldschooling journey—don’t take the downs as a sign something is wrong. Sometimes, it’s just part of the process.Links & Resources :

Episode 24 - Tine Gudrun Petersen
2026/09/21
Worldschooling Through Detours, Creativity, and Family Life with Tina Gudrun Petersen
In episode 24 of The Worldschooling Space, Irene Genelin speaks with Tine Gudrun Petersen, a Danish author and worldschooling mother of one adult child and two young children. Tine shares how a failed road trip to Turkey led her family to Phuket, how writing emerged during the disruptions of COVID-19, and what long-term travel teaches children about adaptability, culture, and independence.
In this episode:
Tine explains how a series of car problems, including breakdowns on the highway and damage sustained in Sofia, Bulgaria, unexpectedly redirected her family from Turkey to Phuket, Thailand.
Why Phuket works well for families, including child-friendly restaurants, drop-in activities, Muay Thai, beaches, accessible food, and a safe gated community.
How Tine became a writer after COVID-19 canceled her food festival and left her spending more time at home with her children.
Tine’s path from writing her first book on her phone to securing a three-book publishing contract and publishing a bestseller.
The origins of Tine’s organic food movement and festival, which connected consumers directly with local farmers and promoted seasonal, local food.
How reading, choir trips, theater travel, and visits to different countries shaped Tina’s lifelong interest in travel.
The emotional challenges of world schooling, including saying goodbye to friends, missing family, and balancing the needs of several children across different locations.
The benefits her children are gaining from travel, including English-language exposure, swimming, cultural openness, and familiarity with different foods, music, people, flora, and fauna.
Practical travel lessons from Tine, such as carrying local cash, buying essentials right away, keeping emergency numbers handy, and maintaining good insurance.
Tine’s advice to families considering world schooling: do not wait for perfect conditions, make a practical plan, and begin.

Episode 23 - Gen Alpha Slang
2026/08/29
Ever feel like your kids are speaking an entirely different language? While exploring Japan, I sat down with my child, Ani, and our friends Laila, Silja, and Anton to get a full-on crash course in Gen Alpha slang.
We break down what the younger generation is actually saying, decoding everything from high praise like 1000 Aura and Rizz, to classic claims of No Cap and the legendary Chad. Plus, we dive into the wild world of internet "brain rot" and try to make sense of ridiculous viral terms like "Cappuccino Assassino".
Episode 22 - Björn Boy
2026/07/22
Björn Boy and his family are from Germany and traveling full time. During this recording, he is calling in from his RV in the United States, where he loves being in nature and the freedom of this lifestyle. We speak about the highs and lows of worldschooling, some of his favorite resources, and also how and why he created LinkEase, an app for meeting up with other traveling families and finding worldschooling hubs.
I hope you enjoy our conversation.

Episode 18 - Ivana Peterson
2025/03/13
I spoke with Ivana Peterson, a friend with whom we are currently co-living in Fethiye, Turkey. Ivana is a mother of three children and wife to her husband, Tommy. You can listen to Episode 4 of this podcast if you’d like to hear our first conversation. One thing I appreciate about Ivana and her family is that they are full-time traveling with older children (ages 6, 9, and 12), and they consider each person's needs in their family. It can be easy to embark on a traveling lifestyle with young children who are content as long as they are with their caregivers, but as children age, they have more of a say in where they go and who they want to be with.
We recorded this podcast from our rental home inside the sauna (it was not turned on) while the children and Andy played Minecraft together in the living room. The acoustics were pretty good in the sauna, and I used Adobe's AI Podcasting tool https://podcast.adobe.com/enhance to remove background noise. It also removed our laughter, so there are a few places in the podcast where you don't hear us laughing, but our voices sound jovial when we continue speaking. I then used Audacity to edit the recording, removing a few filler words, an interruption from a child, and the silent places where our laughter was. I used the song Forest Lullaby for the intro and outro tracks from Pixaby.com
I hope you enjoy our conversation.

Episode 17 - Lorian Ray
2025/02/22
We are currently in Fethiye, Turkey, staying with our friends at The Petersons. They met Lorian and his daughter, Mira, at the Bansko Worldschooling Hub run by the Arctic Terns Foundation, which they participated in before coming to Fethiye. Lorian and Mira came to Fethiye for a visit for a few days this week. I knew we had to record a podcast when I heard some of his stories. Lorian has traveled extensively in the Middle East. Andy took notes while chatting with Lorian and marked a Google Map with ideas for future travels (possibly a future Traveling Village). He says one of his favorite countries is Oman.We recorded this podcast at the kitchen table while our five children played an epic game of tag in the background. Lorian suggested I try using the Adobe Enhance Speech AI filter to remove background noise from the recording. It did remove the noise, but it also made some words slightly slurred. You can use the free version if the audio is under 30 minutes. For those of you curious about my process for editing the podcast - I will use VLC Media player to convert the audio from MP4 to MP3, then upload the MP3 recording to a free audio editing tool called Audacity. I listen to the podcast and edit out sections to try to make the conversation smooth. This one had 4 sections edited out. A friendly child was curious about what those fuzzy microphones we were wearing were and needed some food. I also edited out a section where I tried to get Lorian to tell the story of him having diarrhea in China and visiting a public restroom that was more than public, but alas, he said that story didn’t quite fit the theme of worldschooling.Lorian has traveled with his daughter, Mira, age 9, for two years. They have done several walkways and a couple of worldschooling hubs and live cheaply by traveling in their campervan. This podcast shares his insight into how to find a good match with the workaway experiences and his low of driving through Morocco with his daughter while someone chucked drugs into his window before getting onto a Ferry to Spain. The intro and outtro tracks are by LesFM taken from Pixabay’s royalty free music website.

Episode 15 - Liana Zanin - Egyptian Adventures Worldschooling Hub
2025/01/15
I interviewed Liana Zanin about the Egyptian Adventures Worldschooling Hub in Luxor, Egypt.
She shares her story of how she became inspired to start this Hub, how she worked with her adopted Egyptian family to create it, and how it is opening new opportunities for women in Egypt who are employed by it. She offers her advice to those thinking of starting a Hub and to those families thinking of joining.
We recorded this podcast in the courtyard of the Hub. The background noises include agricultural workers in the sugarcane field next door, an occasional fly, and the sound of the children and coaches playing together in the background.
Episode 14 - Bedtime story in Kyoto, Japan with Geocaching and 61 Points
2024/10/25
For context, please listen to Episode 13 first.
This bedtime story will take you to Kyoto, Japan where Peaches, Gum Cat, Charlotte Puppy, and R2D2 explore Maruyama Park during the cherry blossom season. They search for and find a Geocache, and rest in a hammock while Peaches says the 61 points. It is a good one to listen to before bed.
Episode 13 - Ani and Irene explain bedtime story and characters
2024/10/25
This episode Ani and I explain the characters that often feature in our bedtime stories. This episode is a must before listening to episode 14 for context.
It is also a way for us to preserve the memory of our imaginary friends and characters, because as time passes they aren't mentioned as frequently.
Episode 12 - Asha Mevlana Niederman
2024/03/30
In this episode I talk with Asha, a fellow traveling village member and a single mother by choice to Kheff, who is almost two years old. I appreciate her alternative lifestyle and hope you will enjoy listening to our conversation about traveling, worldschooling, and her touring life with the Trans Siberian Orchestra.
