#218 I Haven’t Been Riding Enough Lately. Here’s What I’m Doing About It.
2026/09/17
Here’s a fun little equation every horse person eventually runs into: five things need to happen today, you have time for three of them... and somehow riding your horse was supposed to fit in there too. 😂 You WANT to ride. Your horse is right there. You have goals you care about. And yet work runs late, the kids need to be somewhere, appointments pop up, the weather doesn’t cooperate, and suddenly another day goes by without getting in the saddle. Then comes the part that makes it worse. I should be riding more. I’ve been so inconsistent. I need to get it together. If I were really serious about this, I’d find the time. That’s where a busy week with your horse can turn into a whole story about what kind of rider you are. So in this episode, we’re talking about what happens when your riding goals run straight into real life—and how to navigate those seasons without throwing the goal out OR expecting yourself to magically create more hours in the day. We’re getting into shorter rides, missed rides, unrealistic comeback plans, comparing your riding schedule to other equestrians, and why what you think you’ve been doing with your horse isn’t always what you’ve actually been doing. Because your riding goals need to work in your real life—not just the imaginary week where nothing goes wrong and somehow you have all afternoon to ride. 🐴 If you or someone you know has benefited from this episode, be sure to tag me @nicoleburnettmentalcoach and @resilientreiner on Instagram and share this episode with your horse-show crew! I am genuinely curious to hear about your experience—especially if you’re one of those riders who really wants to ride more, but life keeps having other plans. And be sure to leave a review on iTunes to help other western riders discover the show! In This Episode You Will Learn: Why not riding as much as you planned doesn’t automatically tell you anything about how serious you are about your goalsHow riders turn “I haven’t ridden much lately” into a much bigger judgment about themselvesWhy one crazy week—or month—doesn’t define your consistencyWhat the minimum useful version of riding can look like during a packed seasonWhy 15 or 20 minutes with your horse can still move things forwardHow to separate the riding goal from the exact schedule you thought you needed to followWhy rest and gaps in your riding aren’t automatically something you need to fixHow the classic “NEXT WEEK I’m riding every day” comeback plan gets us into troubleA better way to decide what your next week of riding can realistically look likeWhy tracking your rides can give you a much more accurate picture of what’s happening with each horseWhy comparing your riding schedule to a trainer, retiree, or someone with horses in their backyard isn’t exactly a fair comparisonHow to be frustrated about not getting to ride without spending the entire day beating yourself up about itWhy consciously deciding that today isn’t a riding day can actually make it easier to move forwardWhat consistency can look like when real life refuses to follow the planQuestions I Answer: What do you do when you WANT to ride your horse but genuinely don’t have enough time?Does riding less for a few weeks mean you’re becoming inconsistent? Is getting on for only 15 or 20 minutes actually worth it?How can you keep your horse progressing when your ideal riding schedule isn’t realistic right now?Do you need to make up the rides you missed? Why does “I’ll ride every day next week” sound like such a great plan—and then fall apart by Wednesday? How can you tell what you’ve actually been doing with each horse instead of relying on what you remember? How do you stop comparing yourself to riders who have completely different schedules, resources, and responsibilities? What does being serious about your riding goals look like during a really busy season? How do you keep going when life keeps interrupting the plan? #217 How to Do Better at Horse Shows
2026/09/09
Here’s a horse-show mystery for you: how can you ride like you know exactly what you’re doing on Wednesday… and by Saturday feel like somebody swapped riders on you? 😂 Your horse didn’t erase three months of training on the trailer ride over. And you didn’t suddenly forget how to ride because somebody handed you a back number. But pressure DOES change things. And this is where I see so many really capable western riders get frustrated. They know what their horse feels like at home. They know they can ride well. Then they get into the warm-up pen, everything starts feeling a little more important, and suddenly they’re thinking faster, trying harder, second-guessing themselves, and wondering where the heck their normal riding went. So in this episode, we’re talking about the gap between the rider you are at home and the rider who shows up at horse shows—and why closing that gap isn’t always about more lessons, more practice, or trying harder. I’m breaking down what pressure can change in your body, focus, timing, and decision-making, why your horse may start feeling different because YOU feel different, and what real confidence under pressure actually looks like. Because I don’t want you spending another show season wondering, “Why can’t I just ride like myself when it counts?” There’s a reason. And more importantly, it’s trainable. 🐴🔥 If you or someone you know has benefited from this episode, be sure to tag me @nicoleburnettmentalcoach and @resilientreiner on Instagram and share this episode with your horse-show crew! I am genuinely curious to hear about your experience—especially if you’re one of those riders who can absolutely nail it at home and then feels completely different once you get to the show. And be sure to leave a review on iTunes to help other western riders discover the show! In This Episode You Will Learn: Why being able to ride well at home doesn’t automatically mean you can access those same skills under pressureWhat may actually be happening when you suddenly feel tight, rushed, hesitant, or mentally scattered at a horse showWhy your horse can feel completely different at the show even when your horse isn’t the real thing that changedHow pressure can affect your timing, feel, softness, focus, and decision-making in the saddleWhy trying harder can sometimes pull you even farther away from the ride you’re trying to createThe difference between simply wanting more confidence and actually training confidenceWhy “relax,” “trust your horse,” and “stop overthinking” aren’t very useful when your nervous system is already fired upWhy one mistake doesn’t have to take the rest of your run down with itWhat I mean when I talk about regulating, rewiring, reclaiming, and reinforcing your response to pressureWhy becoming a stronger competitor does NOT mean becoming fearlessWhat better horse-show performance actually looks like: recovering faster, staying connected, and keeping access to the rider you already know how to beWhy mental performance deserves a place in your training program right alongside everything you’re already doing with your horseQuestions I Answer: Why do you ride better at home than you do at horse shows? Why does your horse feel different at shows? Why do you suddenly overthink things you normally know how to do?Why do you start micromanaging your horse when you’re nervous?Do you actually need more saddle time, or are you training the wrong problem? Why does one mistake sometimes throw off your entire run? What happens to your timing and feel when you’re under pressure? Why doesn’t telling yourself to “just be confident” actually work? Can confidence really be trained?Do you need to get rid of your nerves before you can perform well? What should better performance under pressure actually feel like? How do you start bringing more of your home-ride self into the show pen?Links + Resources: EveryHorse Training Tracker 🐴Available now for iPhone in the Apple App Store. #216 I Couldn’t Find a Horse Training Tracker—So I Built One
2026/09/02
Friday rolls around and Monday somehow feels like it happened three weeks ago. You’re standing at the barn thinking, Wait… when did I ride this horse last? What did we work on? Was that the ride where something finally clicked—or was that the other horse? That was me. I was tired of carrying every horse’s training program around in my head, and after years of searching for an app that tracked the actual training—not vet records, invoices, or GPS miles—I finally decided to build it myself. In this episode, I’m sharing the story behind EveryHorse Training Tracker, how I’m using it with my own horses, and the unexpected way getting my horse training out of my head has actually helped me become more consistent in the saddle. Because the 10-minute rides, groundwork sessions, conditioning days, and tiny pieces you work on before the breakthrough? They count, too. In This Episode You Will Learn: Why I created EveryHorse Training TrackerWhy remembering whether you rode isn’t enough to understand your horse’s trainingHow short rides, groundwork, conditioning, lessons, and exposure sessions all contribute to progressWhy different horses need different training goalsHow tracking my rides unexpectedly made me more consistentWhy seeing your work can help quiet that “I’m not doing enough” voiceHow three weeks of tiny exercises helped lead to my mustang Brumby’s first lead changeWhy EveryHorse gives you information about your training without telling you how to train your horse Questions I Answer: How do you keep track of multiple horses without holding everything in your head?Does a 10- or 15-minute ride really count as a training session? Why did notebooks and barn whiteboards never work for you?How can tracking your horse training help you become more consistent? What should actually count when tracking a horse’s work? Can EveryHorse work for riders outside of reining and western performance horses? When is EveryHorse coming to Android? #215 5 Tips for a Faster Time at Your Next Barrel Race
2026/07/14
It is a horse race, after all. You ever been at a barrel race where somebody says to you, “Man… my horse just felt off today.” And meanwhile you watched the whole thing happen before they even made it to the first barrel. The rider got tight in the alley. Started checking instead of riding. Second-guessed the approach. Tried so hard not to miss that they quit riding freely altogether. Here’s the hard truth nobody really talks about enough in the horse world: A lot of barrel racers are not losing time because their horse lacks speed. They’re losing time because pressure changes how they ride. And the frustrating part? Most riders do not even realize it’s happening while it’s happening. In this episode, I’m diving into 5 things that can genuinely help you clock a faster barrel racing time — and none of them involve just kicking harder or asking your horse for more speed. Because yes, your horse matters. Your training matters. Your pattern matters. But your nervous system matters too. The way you go down the alley matters. The way you recover after a weird approach matters. The way you talk to yourself before a run matters. And if your brain is spiraling while your horse is trying to do their job, that’s going to show up on the clock every single time. We’re talking about the mental side of barrel racing that riders feel every weekend but rarely know how to train for — overthinking, hesitation, pressure, tightness, adrenaline, second-guessing, and the difference between riding careful versus riding committed. This episode is for the rider who knows there is more speed in there… but also knows something changes once competition pressure shows up. And honestly? That does not mean you are weak. It means you are human. Let’s talk about how to ride through that better. If you or someone you know has benefited from this episode, be sure to tag us @nicoleburnettmentalcoach and @resilientreiner on Instagram and share this episode with your community! I am curious to hear all about your experience. Also, be sure to leave a review on iTunes to help others discover the show. In This Episode You Will Learn: Why riders often lose time before they ever make it to the first barrelThe hidden way pressure changes your riding during a barrel racing runWhy trying to “not mess up” creates hesitation and costs timeHow nervous system regulation affects your timing, feel, and connection with your horseWhy overthinking makes riders slower under pressureThe importance of giving your brain one clear job during a runHow to recover quickly when a turn, approach, or moment feels offWhy mentally leaving the run creates even bigger mistakesThe connection between mental consistency and faster barrel racing timesWhy mindset training is part of performance, not separate from itHow to stay more calm, clear, and committed in the alleyway and competition penQuestions I Answer: Why do you ride differently at barrel races than you do at home? How do you stop hesitating during your barrel racing runs? What causes riders to lose time in the alleyway? How can you stay calm before your run?Why does pressure make your timing feel off?How do you stop overthinking while running barrels? What should you focus on during your run instead of trying to think about everything? How can you recover mentally after a bad turn or mistake? Why do you tense up during competition even when you know your horse is capable? How do you build confidence that actually holds up under pressure? #214 Toxic Trainer or Tough Coach? 9 Red Flags Riders and Parents Shouldn’t Ignore
2026/07/07
There’s a moment a lot of riders don’t talk about out loud… You swing off your horse, loosen the cinch, and instead of feeling better—you feel smaller. Quieter. A little unsure of yourself. And here’s the hard truth no one says in the barn aisle: Not every “tough” trainer is actually making you better. In this episode, we’re getting honest about a topic that comes up way more than people admit—how to tell the difference between a coach who’s pushing you to grow and one who’s quietly tearing down your confidence, your decision-making, and your relationship with your horse. Because in the western world, we’ve normalized a lot in the name of grit, discipline, and results. But there’s a line. And if you’ve ever walked away from a ride feeling confused, ashamed, or like you’re losing your voice… we need to talk about it. If you or someone you know has benefited from this episode, be sure to tag us @nicoleburnettmentalcoach @resilientreiner on Instagram and share this episode with your community! I am curious to hear all about your experience. Also, be sure to leave a review on iTunes to help others discover the show. 🤍🐎 In This Episode You Will Learn: The critical difference between a tough coach and a toxic trainer (and why most riders miss it)Why “hard” training is not the same as harmful training—for you or your horseThe subtle signs your confidence is being built… versus slowly broken downHow unhealthy trainer dynamics impact your nervous system, riding performance, and decision-makingWhy confusion and self-doubt can actually be created—not just “in your head”The role of barn culture and how it shapes your experience in the saddleWhat healthy, high-level coaching actually looks like in the western horse worldHow to trust your gut again when something feels offWhat to watch for if you’re a parent with a youth riderThe shift from dependence → independence (and why that matters for long-term success with your horse) Questions I Answer: How do you know if your trainer is helping you grow or hurting your confidence? Is it normal to feel nervous, ashamed, or afraid around my trainer?Where is the line between discipline and emotional harm in riding? Why do you feel like you can’t ask questions or speak up in your lessons? How do toxic dynamics affect your riding and my horse’s performance? What does a healthy trainer-client relationship actually look like? What should you do if something feels off but you can’t fully explain it?How can you advocate for yourself (or your child) without feeling disrespectful? Is it okay to get a second opinion or leave a trainer? #213 How to Plus Your Sliding Stop Every Time
2026/07/01
It’s the crown jewel of reining. A fan favorite to watch. And a rider favorite to perform. Yet you can have the horse, the training, and the maneuver… and still leave points in the pen. Here’s the part riders don’t always want to hear—most missed sliding stops aren’t lost in the dirt… they’re lost 30 feet before the marker. Right in that rundown where everything should feel simple, but suddenly your body tightens, your mind jumps ahead, and your horse feels you check out. In this episode, I’m breaking down why your sliding stop isn’t actually a “stop problem.” It’s a pressure problem. A timing problem. A presence problem. And once you see it, you won’t be able to unsee it. We’re talking about what really changes in your body when the speed goes up, why anticipation quietly steals your score, and how to stay committed all the way through the maneuver so your horse can actually show you what they’ve got. Because the goal isn’t to try harder at the marker. It’s to become the kind of rider your horse can trust all the way down the pen. If you or someone you know has benefited from this episode, be sure to tag us @nicoleburnettmentalcoach @resilientreiner and @[GuestInstagramHandle] on Instagram and share this episode with your community! I am curious to hear all about your experience. Also, be sure to leave a review on iTunes to help others discover the show. In This Episode You Will Learn: Why most sliding stops lose quality before the cue ever happensThe difference between riding into the stop vs. bracing for itHow anticipation and overthinking change your body (and your horse feels it instantly)What actually happens to your timing when pressure goes up in the rundownWhy fear around speed quietly holds riders back from bigger scoresThe real reason “trying harder at the marker” doesn’t fix your stopHow your nervous system impacts your horse’s performance more than you thinkWhat it means to stay committed all the way through a maneuverThe subtle ways riders “pre-stop” without realizing itHow to ride forward with confidence instead of backing off under pressure Questions I Answer: Why does your sliding stop feel good at home but fall apart in the show pen?How do you stop anticipating the stop and stay present in the rundown? Why does your horse feel different when you get nervous or start thinking ahead?Do you need more speed or more control to get better stops? Why do you tense up right before the marker—even when you don’t want to?How can you stay committed to the maneuver without bracing or overthinking it?What should you focus on during the rundown instead of the stop itself? Why does adding speed make you feel out of control—and how do you fix that? #212 Do THIS for More Speed + Confidence With Your Horse
2026/06/24
You can’t fake speed. But it can be so hard to feel comfortable with the speed required to plus your stops, chase down your cow, or win the barrel race. I’ve watched riders ask for more go… then shut it down in the very next stride without even realizing it. Hands get busy, bodies get tight, and suddenly the same rider who wanted more speed is now trying to survive it. And the horse? They feel every bit of that mixed message. In this episode, we’re getting real about what’s actually happening when speed feels messy, scary, or out of control in the saddle. Because this isn’t about “just being braver” or “kicking harder.” This is about how your body interprets speed—and whether your horse experiences you as clear… or conflicted. We’re going to break down why speed isn’t the problem—it’s the mirror. And how learning to stay present, organized, and steady when the energy goes up is what actually creates confidence, connection, and clean performance—whether you’re in the show pen, working cattle, or just loping at home trying to feel more in sync with your horse. If you or someone you know has benefited from this episode, be sure to tag us @nicoleburnettmentalcoach @resilientreiner on Instagram and share this episode with your community! I am curious to hear all about your experience. Also, be sure to leave a review on iTunes to help others discover the show. In This Episode You Will Learn: Why wanting more speed and feeling safe at speed are two completely different thingsWhat your horse actually feels when your body says “go” but your nervous system says “nope”The hidden ways riders accidentally shut down speed without realizing itWhy speed exposes tension, hesitation, and lack of trust faster than anything elseHow your nervous system response—not your riding ability—is often the real limiterThe difference between forcing speed vs. actually riding it wellHow to build confidence at faster gaits without turning into a chaotic or reactive riderWhat “organized speed” really looks and feels like in western riding disciplinesThe small, practical shifts that help you stay present when the energy picks upWhy confidence isn’t about eliminating nerves—but learning to ride through them Questions I Answer: Why does your horse feel harder to ride the moment you ask for more speed? How do you stop getting tight or bracing when your horse gets more forward? Why can you get speed sometimes, but it never feels clean or controlled? Is this a confidence issue, a training issue, or something deeper? How do you build speed without feeling like you’re losing control of your horse? What should you focus on instead of just trying to go faster? Why do you shut things down right when it starts to feel good? How can you stay mentally present instead of panicking when the energy goes up? #211 “I Could Win at Home… Then I Entered the Show Pen” with MJ
2026/06/17
"I could win everything at home... if they judged me there." When MJ said that during our conversation, I knew exactly what she meant. Because here's the thing: she wasn't lacking horse training. She wasn't lacking effort. She wasn't lacking a good horse or a good trainer. In fact, she had all of those things. But every time she rode through the gate at a horse show, everything changed. Her body tightened, her hand came up, her legs got stiff, and the rider she knew she was at home seemed to disappear. This week's guest is MJ Anderson, an Air Force veteran, non-pro reined cow horse competitor, and one of the most determined horsewomen I've had the privilege of supporting through The Mental Gym for Equestrians. In this conversation, she shares how years of frustration in the show pen led her to build a real mental toolbox, develop a pre-run routine she can trust, and finally learn how to stay present when the pressure is on. What I love about MJ's story is that it isn't about becoming fearless. It's about learning how to stop abandoning yourself the moment pressure shows up. And because of that, it's a story I think every Western rider needs to hear. If you or someone you know has benefited from this episode, be sure to tag us @nicoleburnettmentalcoach and @resilientreiner on Instagram and share this episode with your community! I am curious to hear all about your experience. In This Episode You Will Learn: • Why MJ felt like two completely different riders at home versus horse shows • What happened when her trainer finally told her, "You need a mental coach" • How pressure was changing her horse's behavior before she even realized it • The reason trying harder kept making the problem worse • Why MJ decided to join Mental Gym for Equestrians after seeing results from Five Days to Confident Competitor • The exact pre-ride routine she now uses before every ride • How tapping, breathing, grounding, and nervous system regulation changed her confidence • The surprising thing she did before entering the herd that led to one of her best runs ever • How she cut all three cows clean after years of struggling in the herd work • What helped her break into the 70s in the reining for the first time • Why staying present became more important than riding perfectly • How she learned to stop riding everyone else's ride and focus on her own • The mindset shift that helped her stop putting so much pressure on herself • Why she now says, "Be a dog" before important runs • How journaling helped her recreate great rides instead of obsessing over mistakes • What it means to train your brain the same way you train your horse • Why her biggest win had nothing to do with scores, checks, or year-end awards • The powerful lesson she learned about investing in herself Questions We Answer: • Why do you ride so much better at home than you do at horse shows? • Why does your horse feel completely different in the show pen? • What can you do when you start spiraling before a run? • How do you stop overthinking during reining patterns and cow work? • What should you focus on when nerves start taking over? • How do you stay present when you’re competing? • Why do you keep putting so much pressure on myself? • How can you trust your horse more under pressure? • What tools help regulate horse show nerves in the moment? • How do you stop comparing yourself to other riders in your barn? • What does it actually look like to train your mental game? • How do you become the rider your horse needs you to be? #210 Why Does My Horse Ride Better for My Trainer?
2026/06/02
Seriously, what’s up with that? Here’s a little barn reality no one likes to admit out loud… Your horse didn’t suddenly become a saint when your trainer swung a leg over. Same horse. Same saddle. Same arena. And yet… everything looks smoother, lighter, easier. That moment can mess with your head if you let it. In this episode, I’m breaking down what’s actually happening when your horse goes better for your trainer—and why it’s not a reflection of your worth, your talent, or your future as a rider. Because this isn’t about your horse “respecting them more.” It’s about clarity, timing, energy… and the version of you that shows up in the saddle. We’re going to take the emotion out of it, look at what’s really changing in the ride, and give you a clear, grounded way to start closing that gap—so your horse can find that same softness, responsiveness, and connection with you. If you or someone you know has benefited from this episode, be sure to tag us @nicoleburnettmentalcoach @resilientreiner on Instagram and share this episode with your community! I am curious to hear all about your experience. Also, be sure to leave a review on iTunes to help other riders discover the show and get the mental support they need in and out of the saddle. In This Episode You Will Learn: Why your horse working better for your trainer is not about favoritism, respect, or talentThe real reason timing, feel, and clarity change between ridersHow emotional pressure quietly affects your cues, body, and communication with your horseThe difference between riding your horse… and riding your thoughtsWhy “trying harder” often makes your horse feel heavier, not betterThe hidden cost of over-riding, over-cueing, and micromanaging every strideHow consistency (not intensity) builds trust and relaxation in your horseWhat your horse is actually telling you when things feel harder under youThe role your nervous system plays in your horse’s performance and responsivenessHow to shift from self-criticism to curiosity so you can actually improveThe one mistake riders make after watching their trainer ride—and what to do insteadSimple ways to start creating a clearer, quieter ride your horse can understand Questions I Answer: Why does your horse listen better to your trainer than you?Does your horse respect your trainer more? Are you doing something wrong… or are you just not good enough? Why does everything feel heavier when you try to fix things? How do you stop overthinking while you’re riding? What should you actually focus on when you watch your trainer ride your horse? How do you start closing the gap between how your horse feels for your trainer vs. yourself? Is this a confidence issue, a timing issue, or something deeper? How do you stay present instead of riding past mistakes or future problems? What can you realistically change in your rides without trying to fix everything at once? #209 Why Do Affirmations Work on Instagram but Not in the Warm-Up Pen?
2026/05/19
I’m going to say something that might ruffle a few feathers… If affirmations were enough, more riders would be winning in the show pen. Not because you’re not saying the right things. But because when your horse feels the pressure, your body is already telling a different story. Picture this for a second—you're sitting on your horse, everything felt fine at home, you know your cues, you’ve practiced, you’ve even told yourself, “I’ve got this.” And then you hit the warm-up pen. Energy shifts. Eyes are on you. Someone next to you looks sharper, faster, more polished. And suddenly… your brain gets loud, your body tightens, your timing feels off, and that confident version of you? Gone. This episode is where we unpack why that happens—and more importantly, what actually helps you stay steady, clear, and connected to your horse when it matters most. Because this isn’t about thinking better thoughts. It’s about becoming a rider your horse can trust under pressure. #208 Feeding Performance Horses: What Most Riders Get Wrong with Rachael Haar
2026/05/12
Equine nutritionist Rachael Haar joins me to simplify what actually matters when feeding performance horses — from forage and hay quality to supplements, gut health, hydration, hauling, recovery, and the nutrition mistakes well-meaning horse owners often miss. Because let’s be honest: horse nutrition can get confusing fast. One person says your horse needs electrolytes. Another says alfalfa makes horses hot. Someone else swears beet pulp changed their horse’s life. Then suddenly you’re standing there holding three supplements, questioning every feeding decision you’ve ever made while your horse licks the salt block and judges you. So today, we’re simplifying all of it. In this episode, I sat down with equine nutrition consultant Rachael Haar from BCS 5.0 Equine Nutrition, and we had such a good conversation about what actually matters when it comes to feeding western performance horses. We talk about hydration, gut health, hauling, showing, topline, supplements, forage, electrolytes, recovery, and how nutrition may be impacting horses that feel hot, dull, inconsistent, reactive, or flat under saddle. This episode felt like sitting in the barn aisle having a really practical conversation with someone who actually understands horses, performance, and real life horse ownership. Rachael does an incredible job making nutrition feel way less overwhelming and way more doable. And if you’ve ever wondered whether your horse actually needs all the things in your feed room right now… this episode is probably going to save you some stress (and maybe some money too). In This Episode You Will Learn: Why most horse owners are overcomplicating nutritionWhat hay testing can tell you about your horse’s health and performanceHow nutrition impacts recovery, energy, consistency, and toplineThe truth about electrolytes, probiotics, calming supplements, omega-3s, and joint supplementsWhy some horses feel hot, reactive, dull, or inconsistent under saddleHow hauling and showing affect hydration and digestionWhy gut health matters so much for western performance horsesThe difference between feeding a lightly worked horse vs. a performance horseCommon feeding mistakes horse owners make without realizing itSimple ways to support your horse’s health without buying every supplement on the marketQuestions I Answer: Does alfalfa actually make horses hot?Are calming supplements worth it?How do you know if your horse’s diet is balanced? What causes horses to feel inconsistent at horse shows? What supplements are actually useful for performance horses? Why do some horses struggle with topline and recovery? What role does hydration play in horse show performance? How can owners support gut health and digestion during hauling and showing? How much forage should horses really be getting? What should owners look for when choosing supplements?Connect with Rachael Haar + BCS 5.0 Equine Nutrition: Rachael Haar is an independent equine nutrition consultant who helps horse owners build balanced, forage-first feeding programs that support long-term health, recovery, condition, and performance. #207 Stop Overspin Penalties for Good
2026/05/05
Overspin penalty. If you’ve ever shown reining—or any western discipline where precision maneuvers matter—you know that feeling. Because it didn’t feel like a disaster. The horse was turning. The maneuver had speed. There was shape. It felt like it might finally be the spin. And then… you went just a little too far. That moment is one of the most frustrating experiences in the show pen. Not because it was terrible—but because it was so close. In this episode, I want to talk about something that a lot of riders misunderstand about spins, timing, and performance under pressure. Because most riders assume overspin penalties mean one thing: They need to practice spins more. More drilling. More control. More trying to catch the stop earlier. But after coaching a lot of western riders—reiners, ranch riders, cow horse competitors, and people riding patterns across different disciplines—I’ve noticed something important. A lot of overspin penalties are not actually spin problems. They’re pressure problems. What happens is riders get mentally ahead of the maneuver. Instead of riding the spin they’re in, they start riding the stop they’re worried about missing. And the moment your brain jumps ahead like that, timing gets messy. Your body tightens. Your cues change. Your horse feels it. In this episode, I’m going to break down the mental pattern behind overspin penalties, why pressure causes riders to rush their timing, and what you can do to stay present enough in the maneuver to actually ride your horse instead of reacting to the mistake you’re afraid of. If you’ve ever walked out of the show pen thinking, “I know I can ride better than that,” this episode is for you. If this episode resonates with you, be sure to tag me @nicoleburnettmentalcoach and @resilientreiner on Instagram and share the episode with your horse friends or your barn crew. I genuinely love seeing where riders are listening from and hearing what clicked for you. I’m always curious to hear how these ideas show up in your riding. And if the podcast has been helpful for you, leaving a quick review on iTunes is one of the best ways to help more riders discover the show. In This Episode You Will Learn Why overspin penalties often start before the spin even beginsThe mental pattern that causes riders to rush timing in spinsWhy drilling maneuvers harder doesn’t always fix the problemHow pressure changes your nervous system in the saddleThe difference between riding the maneuver and riding the mistake you’re afraid ofWhy anticipation is one of the biggest timing killers in western ridingThe subtle ways riders tighten their bodies without realizing itHow staying present improves feel, precision, and communication with your horseA simple mental cue that can help riders stay in the maneuver instead of rushing the finishHow one rider completely changed her spin scores by shifting her mindset Questions I Answer Why do you overspin even when the spin itself feels good?Is overspinning a training issue or a mental timing issue? Why does pressure in the show pen change the way you cue your horse? What causes you to anticipate the stop during spins? Why does trying harder to avoid a mistake often create the mistake? How does tension affect your horse during a maneuver? Why do you perform differently at home versus in the show pen? What role does your nervous system play in timing and feel? How can you stay mentally present during fast maneuvers? #206 Why Do I Ride Better at Home Than I Do at Shows?
2026/04/28
Hot take: If you ride worse at horse shows than you do at home… It's probably not a training problem. And I know—that’s not what most people want to hear. Because it’s way easier to go home, work your horse harder, fix the spins, clean up the circles, and tell yourself you just need more reps. But here’s what I see all the time as a mental coach for western riders: You can school your horse at home and feel confident. You can lope off, hit your marks, stay with the feel, and ride like you know how to ride. Then you walk into the show pen… and suddenly everything feels just a little off. Not terrible. Just enough to cost you the run. And that’s the part that messes with riders the most. Because it doesn’t feel like a total breakdown. It feels like you’re almost yourself—but not quite. In this episode, I’m breaking down why that happens, what pressure is actually doing to your riding, and why this gap between home and the show pen has nothing to do with whether you’re good enough. If you or someone you know has benefited from this episode, be sure to tag us @nicoleburnettmentalcoach @resilientreiner and share this episode with your community! I am curious to hear all about your experience. Also, be sure to leave a review on iTunes to help others discover the show. In This Episode You Will Learn: Why riding at home and riding at a horse show feel like two completely different experiencesThe real reason pressure changes your timing, feel, and decision-making in the saddleWhy this is not a sign that you’re underprepared or not good enoughThe difference between a skill problem vs. an access-to-skill-under-pressure problemWhat actually happens in your body and mind when the stakes feel higherHow overthinking, micromanaging, and “trying harder” quietly hurt your performanceWhy your horse can feel different—even when nothing about your training has changedThe subtle shift from riding the maneuver → to riding your fear of the mistakeWhy your home rides are valid (and actually matter more than you think)The perspective shift that helps riders stop spiraling after inconsistent show runs Questions I Answer: Why do you ride better at home than you do at horse shows? Why does your horse feel different in the show pen?Why do you overthink everything once you start competing? Is this a confidence issue… or do you just need more practice? Why can you know what to do but still not ride like myself when it counts? Are you just not mentally tough enough for competition? Why do you rush, hesitate, or second-guess things you normally do well at home?Do your good rides at home even count if you can’t repeat them at shows? #205 My Dark Mental Hack to Crush the Competition With Unbeatable Consistency
2026/04/22
Here’s a spicy one for you today… Some riders get their rides done no matter the weather, the wind, the mood, or the million distractions that come with real life. And it’s not because they’re more disciplined, more talented, or blessed with superhuman motivation. It’s because they use one quiet mental trick that keeps their reins in their own hands — not their excuses. And honestly? This trick has saved me more times than I can count. From the nights I’m staring at my boots thinking “absolutely not,” to the weeks where my horse life feels like one long to-do list… this tiny shift has pulled me out of procrastination, off the couch, and back into the identity of the rider I actually want to be. Today, I’m breaking down the simple mental reframe that riders all over the world have used to turn “ugh, I should” into “alright, let’s go.” It’s honest. It’s practical. And it works even on those cold, windy Tuesday nights when motivation is nowhere to be found. If you’ve ever wanted the results — the clean stop, the confident run, the steady mind — but dreaded the ride that gets you there… this episode is going to land hard. If this episode hits home for you, or if you know a rider who’s been stuck in the “have to” mindset, be sure to tag me @nicoleburnettmentalcoach and @resilientreiner on Instagram and share it with your community! I love hearing what shifts for you. And don’t forget to leave a review on iTunes — it helps more riders find these tools. IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: The subtle language mistake that makes riding feel like homeworkWhy “I get to do this” doesn’t always work (and what to say instead)The real reason your brain resists riding, practicing, or mindset workHow one flipped sentence lowers anxiety and gets you moving againThe simple daily script that rewires your identity as a riderA live walkthrough of how to apply the “I want to… because…” tool to riding and non-riding tasksWhy this tool boosts motivation even when you’re tired, stressed, or overwhelmed QUESTIONS I ANSWER: Why does “I have to” create resistance in riders? What makes “I want to… because…” a scientifically-backed motivation hack? How can riders reconnect to internal motivation instead of external pressure? What does identity have to do with follow-through and confidence? How do you use this mental tool during busy, stressful, or low-energy seasons? #204 You Have to Be Willing to Look Dumb. Kari Klingenberg on Growth, Discomfort, and Better Riding
2026/04/08
Join me for a sit down with Kari Klingenberg—an NRHA Professional, Team USA representative, and reining trainer based at Pinnacle Ranch in Scottsdale, Arizona—who works with horses and riders at every level to build real performance in the show pen. And we got real about what actually separates riders who show up like themselves when it counts… from the ones who feel like everything falls apart the second the pressure hits. We talk about what it really takes to build confidence as a rider, why some riders keep hitting the same wall (no matter how hard they work), and the shift that changes how your horse responds to you in real time. Kari brings a grounded, no-BS perspective from the trainer’s side—developing horses, coaching non-pro riders, and navigating her own path in the western performance horse world. And I think you’re going to feel seen in this one… especially if you’ve ever walked out of the show pen thinking, “I know I can ride better than that.” If you or someone you know has benefited from this episode, be sure to tag us @nicoleburnettmentalcoach @resilientreiner and @kariannaph on Instagram and share this episode with your community!
