Last week I pulled up a chart I'd never really looked at closely, and it humbled me. Since I handed our Perth location to Nicole, our new manager, monthly recurring revenue has grown nearly twice as fast as it did under me: about 6.5% a month, up from 3.5%. That's around 30% growth in five months, 43% more cleans, and higher gross profit even after adding a full-time salary. And she's still technically settling into the role. In this episode I break down why: focus. Not focus on ideas, but focus in your day-to-day. Your goal can be locked in while you're still spread across ten different hats. I also talk about a dinner conversation on AI that turned into a reminder I needed: every disruption (COVID, cost-of-living crises, TikTok, and now AI) feels like it'll end us, and every time we adapt. They moved to Australia young, started the business with no experience and English as their second language, and spent their first eight months so scared of losing clients that they stopped chasing new ones altogether. Then something shifted. In the last six months alone they've doubled the business from $250k to half a million a year in recurring revenue, with a team of seven. We get into what actually broke it open: the $3,500 they paid to learn cold email (only to realise it was already sitting in my course), why they went all-in on commercial, and the moment they realised they'd been losing money the whole time. Julian was studying nursing at uni and thinking about switching to a business degree, until he did the maths: three years of theory and a piece of paper, or three years of actually building something. He picked house cleaning because it was the one home service with real recurring revenue, and started from scratch at 21 in a town of 40,000 people he shares with the big franchises. Twelve months later he's at $140K in recurring revenue, ranking number one locally on Google, and he signed his first employee's contract the morning we recorded this.
