Why You Keep Repeating the Same Relationship Patterns
2026/10/22
In this episode of The Connected Community Podcast: Exploring Possibility, host Nicky Yazbeck welcomes Harmony Kwiker, MA, LPC, ACS, a psychotherapist, author, educator, and founder of the Institute for Spiritual Alignment and The Awakened Therapist approach. Together, they explore why so many of us struggle to create fulfilling relationships, how childhood attachment wounds influence our adult connections, and what it takes to move beyond old patterns to experience deeper intimacy, emotional safety, and authentic love.   Raised in a family of healers, Harmony was introduced to meditation, breathwork, and alternative healing practices at a very young age. However, her own experiences in traditional therapy left her feeling pathologized and misunderstood, inspiring her to pursue a more compassionate and holistic approach to healing. Today, she serves as lead Gestalt faculty at Naropa University and teaches advanced somatic interventions at the Integrative Psychiatry Institute. She is also the author of four books, including Reveal: Embody the True Self Beyond Trauma and Conditioning, Align: Living and Loving from the True Self, The Awakened Therapist, and Holistic Co-Regulation. Through her teaching, writing, and clinical work, Harmony integrates Gestalt therapy, somatic healing, spirituality, and consciousness to help people reconnect with their authentic selves.   Throughout their conversation, Nicky and Harmony explore how our attachment systems are deeply rooted in our nervous systems and how early relational experiences shape the ways we seek connection, respond to conflict, and experience love. They discuss how we can become so identified with our attachment wounds that we unconsciously recreate familiar relationship dynamics, even when those patterns leave us feeling disconnected or unfulfilled.   Harmony offers a different perspective on healing, emphasizing that transformation doesn’t necessarily come from analyzing our past or trying to fix ourselves. Instead, it begins with learning to be present with our emotions, recognizing our nervous system’s survival responses, and developing the capacity to remain connected to ourselves during moments of discomfort. Drawing on Gestalt principles and somatic awareness, she shares how embodiment, self-responsivity, and compassionate curiosity can help us move through emotional dysregulation rather than becoming consumed by it.   They also explore the importance of rupture and repair in relationships, challenging the belief that healthy relationships are free from conflict. Harmony explains how emotional security is often developed through the process of repairing disconnection, building trust, and learning to receive love more deeply. The conversation offers insight into cultivating secure attachment, developing greater self-trust, and creating relationships rooted in authenticity rather than fear or survival.       Key  topics: Harmony Kwiker's background and holistic and transpersonal approach to therapy The principles of Gestalt therapy and contact boundary disturbances Attachment theory and how early experiences shape adult relationships The importance of repair and self-regulation in secure attachments Working with trauma and unresolved childhood wounds in the present moment The role of embodiment and somatic practices in healing Practical steps for developing secure attachments and self-love     Chapters: 00:00 Introduction to Harmony Kwiker and the episode's focus 02:16 Harmony's early life and exposure to healing practices 04:23 Her journey into psychology and holistic therapy 05:04 Her unique lens: holistic and transpersonal approaches 07:04 Overview of Gestalt therapy and its roots 09:43 The brain's role in unfinished trauma and therapy techniques 10:47 Attachment theory and its impact on adult relationships 13:41 The importance of repair in secure attachment 16:14 Regulating the nervous system and attachment styles 18:26 Disorganized attachment and trauma responses 19:11 Working with attachment wounds in therapy 20:22 Healing attachment through self-responsivity and embodiment 22:37 Creating secure attachments in childhood 33:51 Fostering healthy relationships and self-trust 44:45 Harmony's books, podcast, and offerings for practitioners       Connect with me: https://nickyYyoga.com https://www.youtube.com/@TheConnectedCommunity [email protected]   Connect with Harmony: https://awakenedtherapist.com/free-courses/ https://awakenedtherapist.com/awakened-therapist-podcast/ https://www.instagram.com/awakened_therapists https://www.youtube.com/@awakenedtherapist     keywords: therapy, attachment, healing, gestalt, somatic, self-awareness, relationships, trauma, mindfulness, holistic health, healthy relationships, attachment wounds, childhood trauma, relationship healing, secure attachment, emotional intimacy
Why So Many Women Have Better Sex After 40
2026/10/08
In this episode of The Connected Community Podcast: Exploring Possibility, Nicky Yazbeck sits down with Bria Tavakoli, LPCC, a sex and relational therapist specializing in intimacy, sexuality, and relationships at Evolving Intimacy Psychotherapy. Bria is also the creator of Sex and Psychedelics 101 and brings nearly two decades of experience in yoga, meditation, and embodiment into her therapeutic work.   Together, Nicky and Bria challenge the cultural myth that women’s sexuality inevitably fades with age. Instead, midlife can become a powerful time of sexual discovery, when women begin questioning old conditioning, letting go of shame, becoming more honest about what they want, and reconnecting with their bodies and erotic selves. For some women, their best sex may actually come after 40.   They explore how early sexual experiences, trauma, body image, relationship patterns, and cultural expectations can shape sexuality throughout our lives. The conversation also looks at what happens when partners have different sexual needs, why sex can carry very different emotional meanings for different people, and how power dynamics can influence intimacy and connection.   Bria and Nicky dive into shadow work, masculine and feminine energies, embodiment, self-esteem, grief, and the importance of curiosity and radical honesty in relationships. They also discuss sexual trauma and how turning toward our sensations and emotions can help us better understand what we need and desire.   Ultimately, this conversation is an invitation to rethink what we’ve been taught about sex, aging, and desire. Midlife doesn’t have to mean becoming less sexual. It can be an opportunity to shed old expectations, explore parts of yourself that may have been hidden, and reclaim your sexuality on your own terms.   takeaways: Many people have negative first sexual experiences that can impact their future. Midlife can be a time of empowerment and erotic discovery for women. Cultural myths suggest that women's sexuality fades in midlife, which is not true. Honesty and curiosity are essential for personal growth in relationships. Shadow work can reveal hidden treasures about one's sexuality. Balancing masculine and feminine energies can enhance relationships. Self-care and compassion are crucial for maintaining self-esteem in midlife. Friendships can also be a source of healing and support. Take good loving care of your body now. Look at changes holistically: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual. Focus on what enlivens you and brings joy. Aging is a privilege; live fully while alive. Turn towards sensations and feelings for healing. Navigating sexual trauma can complicate relationships. Understanding sexual dynamics is crucial for intimacy. Power dynamics affect relationship satisfaction. Self-exploration is key to reclaiming sexuality. Radical honesty is essential for relationship growth     Chapters 00:00 Introduction to Sex and Relationship Therapy 02:50 Bria's Journey into Sex Therapy 06:02 Myths of Midlife Sexuality 09:02 Reclaiming Sexuality in Midlife 11:55 The Role of Shadow Work 15:05 Balancing Masculine and Feminine Energies 18:13 Curiosity and Honesty in Relationships 20:58 Embodiment and Self-Esteem in Midlife 24:24 Holistic Approaches to Aging 27:54 Embracing the Body and Emotions 30:52 Navigating Sexual Trauma in Relationships 34:44 Understanding Sexual Dynamics and Needs 39:51 Power Dynamics in Relationships 42:46 Reclaiming Sexuality and Self-Exploration   Connect with me: https://nickyYyoga.com https://www.youtube.com/@TheConnectedCommunity [email protected]   Connect with Bria: https://www.evolvingintimacy.net/ https://evolvingintimacy.substack.com/ www.instagram.com/briatavakoli/?hl=en       Keywords: sex therapy, relationship therapy, midlife sexuality, eroticism, shadow work, masculine and feminine balance, self-esteem, embodiment, healing, curiosity aging, holistic health, emotional well-being, sexual trauma, relationship dynamics, self-exploration, embodiment, power dynamics, intimacy, self-pleasure, sexual exploration
ADHD in Women Over 40: Why Everything Suddenly Feels Harder
2026/09/17
In this episode of The Connected Community Podcast: Exploring Possibility, I sit down with Britt Ritchie, a doctorate-prepared psychiatric nurse practitioner and founder of Mind Alchemy Mental Health in Denver, to explore ADHD in women and why it is so often missed until later in life.   We talk about the ways ADHD can look different in women, particularly those with inattentive or combined presentations who may never have fit the stereotypical picture of hyperactivity. For many women, years of developing strategies, masking symptoms, overachieving, and simply working harder can keep ADHD hidden. Then perimenopause and menopause arrive. As hormones shift, strategies that once worked may become less effective, and struggles with focus, organization, motivation, emotional regulation, memory, and overwhelm can suddenly feel much more noticeable.   Britt also shares her own experience of appearing successful and high-achieving while privately struggling with anxiety, perfectionism, and undiagnosed ADHD. We explore the relationship between ADHD, anxiety, depression, and burnout; what a thorough ADHD evaluation can look like; medication and treatment options; genetic and functional testing; and how lifestyle, physical health, and the nervous system can all be considered as part of a more individualized approach to mental health care.   We also talk about the stigma that still surrounds psychiatric medication, why it can seem like “everyone has ADHD” today, how our increasingly stimulating environment affects attention, and the strengths that can come with an ADHD brain.   Britt brings more than 18 years of healthcare experience spanning ICU and perioperative nursing, community mental health, hospital psychiatry, and academia. She earned both her MSN and Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Colorado and later served as an assistant professor. Through Mind Alchemy Mental Health, she now specializes in women’s mental health, including ADHD, anxiety, depression, burnout, and emotional exhaustion, combining psychiatric care with a holistic, mind-body approach.     ADHD in women and how it differs from men Impact of hormonal changes and perimenopause on ADHD symptoms The importance of proper diagnosis and testing methods Medication and supplement options for ADHD The role of genetic testing in personalized treatment Holistic health strategies including labs and lifestyle adjustments Stigma and misconceptions around psych medications The concept of ADHD superpowers and strengths   Chapters: 00:00 Introduction to Britt Ritchie's expertise and focus 01:49 ADHD in women and how it often goes unnoticed 03:55 Personal journeys with ADHD diagnosis and treatment 06:51 Different types of ADHD and how they manifest in women 10:03 Common symptoms women experience with ADHD 14:03 The connection between ADHD, anxiety, and depression 16:05 The strengths and superpowers associated with ADHD 17:51 Hormonal influences and menopause on ADHD symptoms 19:58 Diagnosis patterns and late diagnosis in women 22:00 Medication management and expectations 25:57 Genetic testing and its role in treatment 34:04 Holistic health, labs, and optimizing treatment 40:57 Stigma around medications and barriers to treatment 44:50 Why everyone seems to have ADHD today 46:04 The impact of modern stimuli and environment on ADHD symptoms 47:56 Britt Ritchie's practice and how to connect 48:58 Closing thoughts and appreciation   Connect with me: https://nickyYyoga.com https://www.youtube.com/@TheConnectedCommunity [email protected]   Connect with Britt: https://www.mindalchemymentalhealth.com/ https://www.instagram.com/mind_alchemy_mental_health https://www.linkedin.com/in/britt-ritchie-psychiatric-dnp-53a924153/     Keywords: ADHD in women, ADHD, ADD, mental health, functional medicine, hormonal changes, testing, treatment, holistic health, genetic testing, medication, supplements, perimenopause
Why Plant Medicines Should NOT be Legalized
2026/08/27
In this episode of The Connected Community Podcast: Exploring Possibility, Nicky sits down with Grizz Berr for a conversation about psychedelics, ayahuasca, plant medicine, and the growing movement toward legalization. While psychedelic medicines continue to gain mainstream attention, Grizz offers a different perspective: What could be lost when sacred plant medicines become legalized, commercialized, and removed from the traditions that have protected them for generations?   Grizz is a provider of 5-star ayahuasca plant medicine retreats, offering U.S.-based weekend experiences designed for busy entrepreneurial parents. His retreats are rooted in traditional ceremony, authentic music, and teachings from the Amazon Rainforest of Brazil. After eight years of working with sacred plant medicine, Grizz traveled deep into the Brazilian Amazon, spending a month in the rainforest and more than six weeks traveling as part of an intensive journey into the traditions, teachings, and practices surrounding ayahuasca.   Together, Nicky and Grizz explore the intersection of psychedelic legalization, indigenous wisdom, spirituality, healing, and commercialization. Grizz shares why he believes legalization may unintentionally threaten the sacredness of plant medicine traditions and discusses the difference between simply consuming a psychedelic substance and participating in a ceremony grounded in intention, preparation, lineage, music, and reverence.   The conversation examines the importance of knowing where plant medicine comes from, how it is prepared, and the energy and intention carried throughout that process. Grizz also discusses training and experience for those facilitating ceremonies, reciprocity with indigenous communities, and the legal challenges faced by indigenous traditions, underground ceremonies, and plant medicine churches in the United States.   As psychedelics such as ayahuasca, psilocybin, and other plant medicines become increasingly visible within mental health, wellness, and personal transformation spaces, this episode asks an important question: Can society expand access to psychedelic healing without stripping these medicines of their cultural, spiritual, and ceremonial roots?   This conversation offers a thought-provoking perspective on the future of psychedelics and plant medicine—one centered not simply on whether these medicines should be legal, but on how they can be approached with integrity, responsibility, reciprocity, and respect for the indigenous cultures and traditions that have carried this knowledge for generations.   Key  topics: The importance of respecting indigenous traditions in plant medicine The effects of legalization on the sacredness of plant medicines The role of ceremony and intention in healing The legal challenges faced by indigenous and underground ceremonies The concept of reciprocity and energy exchange in plant medicine The difference between traditional and commercialized use of psychedelics The importance of proper training and preparation for ceremonies The impact of energy and intention in the preparation of plant medicines The legal cases and advocacy for indigenous rights in plant medicine The importance of sourcing and energy in the quality of plant medicines     Chapters: 00:00 Introduction to Grizz Berr and his background in plant medicine 03:56 Grizz shares his first experiences with ceremonies and the call to lead 08:01 The importance of sacredness and traditional practices in ceremonies 12:00 Legal challenges and the court cases of plant medicine churches 15:56 The impact of legalization on the sacredness and accessibility 19:45 The significance of source, intention, and energy in medicine 24:08 Training, experience, and the role of indigenous knowledge 28:07 Rules and principles for holding safe and sacred ceremonies 31:55 Reciprocity and honoring indigenous communities 36:10 The future of plant medicine and the importance of integrity     Connect with me: https://nickyYyoga.com https://www.youtube.com/@TheConnectedCommunity [email protected]   Connect with Grizz: https://safeceremonies.com/listings/ceremonial-plant-medicine/ https://www.facebook.com/PLANTMEDICINERETREATS         keywords: plant medicine, psychedelics, indigenous traditions, legalization, sacredness, ceremony, reciprocity, healing, ayahuasca, mushrooms, psilocybin
Ayurveda Myth Busters: What Are You Really Consuming?
2026/08/20
In this episode of The Connected Community Podcast: Exploring Possibility, host Nicky Yazbeck sits down with clinical herbalist, Ayurvedic practitioner, and functional nutrition counselor Lila Swanberg for a fascinating exploration of Ayurveda, mental health, gut health, spirituality, and our relationship with disease and healing.   At the center of the conversation is a deceptively simple question: What are we digesting?   From an Ayurvedic perspective, digestion extends far beyond the food we put into our bodies. We are continually taking in experiences, information, emotions, relationships, stress, technology, and the world around us. Lila explores how what we consume and our ability to process it can influence our physical health, mental and emotional well-being, and connection to ourselves.   Lila introduces the foundations of Ayurvedic medicine, including the doshas and Ayurveda’s emphasis on balance, while exploring how this ancient healing system approaches health and disease differently from conventional Western medicine. Rather than viewing symptoms or individual parts of the body in isolation, Ayurveda considers the whole person: diet, digestion, lifestyle, mental state, environment, patterns, and the natural fluctuations that occur throughout life.   The conversation also explores the increasingly recognized relationship between gut health and mental health, the role of herbs and herbal medicine, and some of the misconceptions surrounding popular natural remedies and adaptogens. Lila challenges the idea that herbs such as Ashwagandha and Shilajit are universally beneficial simply because they are natural, explaining why an individualized approach matters.   Nicky and Lila also move beyond physical health to examine the impact of modern life. What happens when we are constantly consuming information, stimulation, technology, opinions, and expectations? And what might change when we become more intentional about what we allow into our bodies and minds?   Lila Swanberg is a Clinical Herbalist, Ayurvedic Practitioner, and Functional Nutrition Counselor specializing in chronic and complex health patterns, particularly working with people who feel they have tried everything without finding meaningful answers. She has trained extensively and continues to study under Karta Purkh Singh Khalsa (KP), a highly respected herbalist and educator. Today, Lila runs The Virtual Natural Healing Clinic, working with clients throughout the United States and internationally. She is also the host of Lila’s Herbal Revolution and leads a mentorship community supporting practitioners in the natural healing field as they deepen and strengthen their clinical work.     Key topics: Ayurveda and its origins The difference between Western medicine and Ayurveda Holistic assessment of health including diet, lifestyle, and mental state The role of herbs and herbalism in Ayurveda Understanding doshas and their impact on health The importance of balance and flux in life and health The connection between gut health and mental health Misconceptions and myths about herbal remedies like Ashwagandha and Shilajit The influence of modern society and technology on health and awareness Spirituality and purpose as part of health and healing   Connect with me: https://nickyYyoga.com https://www.youtube.com/@TheConnectedCommunity [email protected]   Connect with Lila: https://www.skool.com/path-to-practitioner-potency-3445 https://tvnhc.com/      Keywords: Ayurveda, herbalism, holistic health, mental health, gut health, spiritual wellness, natural remedies, health myths, adaptogens, self-awareness, doshas, ashwagandha,  Shilajit
GLP-1 Medications: What Every Woman Needs to Know
2026/07/30
What happens when one of the most popular weight-loss medications collides with the realities of aging, metabolism, and muscle health? In this episode of The Connected Community Podcast, Nicky sits down with Dr. Corey Winn, a Doctor of Physical Therapy, strength specialist, and movement expert with over 15 years of experience helping people build stronger, healthier bodies.   Dr. Winn specializes in supporting women through perimenopause, menopause, and beyond by focusing on what truly creates long-term health: preserving muscle, improving metabolism, increasing energy, and building resilience. Together, she and Nicky take a balanced, evidence-based look at the growing use of GLP-1 medications, exploring both their benefits and the important considerations that are often overlooked.   Their conversation dives into why muscle is one of the body’s greatest metabolic assets, why rapid weight loss can come at a cost if nutrition and resistance training aren’t prioritized, and how bone density, strength, and metabolic health become increasingly important as we age. Dr. Winn explains why eating enough protein, fueling the body properly, and incorporating strength training are essential for anyone using GLP-1 medications, and for anyone navigating midlife.   This episode is also an invitation to shift the conversation around aging. Rather than chasing a smaller body at all costs, Nicky and Dr. Winn discuss embracing a mindset that values strength, capability, vitality, and longevity. They explore body composition over the number on the scale, practical strategies for supporting metabolism, managing blood sugar and inflammation, improving recovery, and creating sustainable habits that support health for years to come.   Chapters   00:00 Introduction and Guest Background 01:10 What Are GLP-1 Medications and Their Uses 03:55 Why Muscle Mass Matters for Metabolism 06:09 Risks of Rapid Weight Loss Without Support 08:00 Managing Muscle Loss During Medication Use 10:22 Long-term Use of GLP-1 and Medical Guidance 13:32 Health Strategies for Women in Menopause 17:01 Understanding Body Composition and Mindset 21:42 Building Strength and Confidence 25:53 Protein Intake and Nutrition Tips 29:45 Managing Gut Health and Medication Side Effects 34:11 Balancing Joy and Health Goals 40:18 Exercise, Hydration, and Energy 44:42 Blood Sugar, Inflammation, and Heart Health 47:13 Final Advice for Aging Gracefully and Staying Strong   Connect with me: https://nickyYyoga.com https://www.youtube.com/@TheConnectedCommunity [email protected]   Connect with Corey: www.coreywinn.com www.coreywinn.com/freecall www.theweeklyexamroom.com     keywords: GLP-1, menopause, muscle mass, metabolism, nutrition, resistance training, weight loss, health, aging, hormone balance
Love Beyond Death: Turning Grief into Growth
2026/07/02
Host Nicky Yazbeck welcomes Roger Peterson, an artist, musician, writer, and construction consultant, for a conversation about love, grief, healing, and the unexpected growth that can emerge after profound loss.   After the death of his wife, Brandy, Roger found himself moving through a grief that changed the way he understood life, love, spirituality, and connection. In this episode, Roger shares openly about the depth of that loss and the ways it continues to shape him. Rather than presenting grief as something to “get over,” he speaks about it as an ongoing relationship with love, memory, vulnerability, and acceptance.   Together, Nicky and Roger explore how grief can open the heart in surprising ways, even while it breaks it. Roger reflects on the role of plant medicine and earth medicine in his healing journey, sharing how these experiences helped him access deeper layers of emotion, self-acceptance, and spiritual connection. He also speaks about art as a pathway for expression, allowing him to move feelings through the body and give shape to what words cannot always hold.   This conversation moves through themes of love beyond death, continuing bonds with loved ones, messages and synchronicities, and the delicate balance of honoring the past while continuing to live fully in the present. Roger does not claim to have all the answers. Instead, he offers an honest and deeply human perspective from someone who is still learning, still healing, and still discovering what it means to keep an open heart after loss.       Takeaways: Transformation through grief is possible and can lead to personal growth. Vulnerability is a strength that allows deeper connections with others. Grief can open individuals up to new spiritual insights. Letting go of attachments is essential for emotional healing. Love transcends physical existence and can be felt beyond death. Experiencing grief can change one's perspective on life and relationships. The process of healing is unique for everyone and requires patience. Grief can be a transformative gift that leads to self-discovery. Art can serve as a powerful medium for expressing emotions. Embracing grief allows for a deeper connection to love. Self-acceptance is crucial in the journey of healing. The process of grief is unique and non-linear for everyone. Letting go does not mean forgetting; it means honoring the past. Messages from loved ones can come in unexpected ways. Finding joy after loss is possible and can coexist with grief. Earth medicine can facilitate profound personal transformation. Vulnerability opens the door to new relationships and experiences.     Connect with me: https://nickyYyoga.com https://www.youtube.com/@TheConnectedCommunity [email protected]         Keywords: grief, transformation, spirituality, plant medicine, healing, vulnerability, love, loss, personal growth, emotional healing, self-acceptance, love, transformation, earth medicine, art, healing, emotional journey, loss, personal growth
Human Design 2027 Predictions: Shifting into the Cross of the Sleeping Phoenix
2026/06/18
In this episode of The Connected Community Podcast, host Nicky Yazbeck sits down with Peter Berv, a certified Human Design analyst, trauma-informed guide, teacher, and shamanic practitioner whose lifelong journey into healing began after a birth injury set him on a quest to understand human potential, transformation, and authentic living. Over the years, Peter devoted himself to studying spiritual traditions, healing systems, shamanic practices, entheogens, and personal development from around the world. Through this exploration, he discovered Human Design, a system he describes as one of the most powerful tools for self-knowledge and awakening.   Drawing from his extensive experience working with individuals, couples, and families, Peter shares how Human Design complements his work in the shamanic arts and creates a practical framework for self-discovery, emotional intelligence, and personal transformation. He also discusses his work facilitating retreats, ceremonies, classes, and events that integrate Human Design, sound healing, and plant medicine.   Together, Nicky and Peter explore the significance of Human Design in today’s world, the shift from a mental-awareness era to an emotionally aware society, and the growing impact of neurodiversity on communication, relationships, and community. Peter shares insights on the future of human evolution, the emergence of nine-centered beings, and how developing emotional awareness may fundamentally change the way we lead, connect, and heal.   The conversation also examines the role of psychedelics and entheogens in emotional healing, the challenges facing traditional mental health systems, and the importance of investing in personal growth, spirituality, and meaningful community during times of rapid societal change. Peter offers his perspective on breaking down outdated hierarchical structures and embracing new models of leadership rooted in awareness rather than authority.   Whether you’re curious about Human Design, emotional intelligence, personal transformation, psychedelics, spirituality, leadership, or the future of human consciousness, this episode offers a fascinating exploration of self-discovery, authentic living, and humanity’s evolving path forward.     Takeaways: Human design synthesizes ancient systems into a modern framework for understanding ourselves. We are transitioning from a mental awareness era to an emotional awareness era. Psychedelics can help bring repressed emotions to the surface for healing. The traditional mental health system is collapsing, necessitating new approaches to care. Investing in personal growth and community is crucial for navigating future changes. Relationships need to be reciprocal; it's time to let go of those that don't serve us. The future will require new models of community and individuality. We must be adaptable and open to the unknown as we prepare for the future. Nine-centered leadership is about helping others see. New ways of bonding through emotional intelligence are emerging. Human design is a great tool for self-exploration.     Chapters 00:00 Introduction to Human Design and Its Importance 03:07 Peter's Journey into Human Design 05:03 The Shift from Mental to Emotional Awareness 10:55 Predictions for the Future and the Role of Neurodiversity 14:44 The Impact of Neurodiversity on Communication 18:55 Psychedelics and Emotional Healing 21:52 The Collapse of Traditional Mental Health Systems 26:09 Preparing for the Future: Individual and Community Dynamics 30:15 Investing in Self and Community 33:10 Role Modeling for Future Generations 34:42 The Evolution of Humanity 35:56 Transitioning to Nine-Centered Beings 37:19 Awareness Over Accomplishment 39:41 Nine-Centered Leadership 41:15 New Ways of Bonding and Relating 45:13 Breaking Down Hierarchical Structures 46:53 Understanding Human Design 50:36 The Journey of Self-Discovery 52:32 Peter Berv's Offerings and Expertise     Connect with me: https://nickyYyoga.com https://www.youtube.com/@TheConnectedCommunity [email protected]   Connect with Peter: https://peterberv.com https://humandesigndenver.com https://novahealingarts.com https://instagram.com/peterberv   Telepathy Tapes - https://telepathytapes.com       keywords: Human Design, Joavian Archive, Emotional Awareness, Neurodiversity, Psychedelics, Mental Health, Future Predictions, Spiritual Growth, Individuality, Human Design 2027, nine-centered beings, awareness, self-discovery, emotional intelligence, transformation
Beyond Ego: The Journey Into Authentic Self
2026/05/28
In this episode of The Connected Community Podcast, Nicky and Adam Yazbeck explore the deeper meaning of ego, identity, and the journey of becoming fully human. Rather than viewing ego as something inherently negative, they unpack its essential role in developing a grounded sense of self and why true spiritual growth requires a healthy, integrated ego rather than bypassing it.   Together, they discuss how childhood experiences shape identity, the tension between authenticity and social conditioning, and the often uncomfortable process of individuation. The conversation explores the relationship between ego and consciousness, the importance of shadow work and self-awareness, and how midlife can become a powerful invitation into deeper self-exploration.   Nicky and Adam also reflect on the loss of depth and true connection in modern culture, the difference between surface-level interaction and genuine community, and the importance of remaining rooted in reality while navigating spiritual development. Throughout the episode, they emphasize that personal growth is not about transcending our humanity, but about integrating all parts of ourselves with greater awareness, presence, and compassion.     Key Points: Ego is often misunderstood and has a negative connotation. A healthy ego is essential for a strong self-identity. You can't transcend something that you haven't developed. Childhood experiences shape our ego and personality. Self-love is crucial for integrating different parts of ourselves. Narcissism indicates a lack of development in the ego. Cultural influences impact how we develop our sense of self. Questioning societal norms is essential for personal growth. The journey to self-awareness often begins in midlife. Social media connections lack the depth of true community. Individuation is a challenging and uncomfortable process. Ego serves as a vehicle for self-discovery and growth. Transcendence requires a balance between ego and self. Presence and authenticity are powerful teachers. Integration of spiritual experiences into daily life is essential. Maintaining a healthy ego is crucial for spiritual development.     Chapters 00:00 Introduction to Ego and Its Importance 03:46 Understanding Ego: Definitions and Perspectives 07:04 The Development of a Healthy Ego 09:41 Stages of Ego Development: Pre-Personal to Personal 12:42 Challenges in Ego Development: Narcissism and Caretaking 15:50 The Journey to Self-Love and Integration 18:57 Accessing the Shadow: The Unconscious Material 19:21 The Role of Age in Ego Development 22:03 Cultural Influences on Ego Development 25:15 Encouraging Free Thinking and Community Engagement 26:13 The Depth of Connection in Modern Relationships 28:22 The Uncomfortable Journey of Individuation 29:36 Understanding Limitations and Groundedness 33:55 Ego, Identity, and the Path to Self-Discovery 38:08 Transcendence and the Role of Ego 41:17 Transpersonal Relationships and Integration 44:39 The Role of the Elder and Service to Others     Connect with me: https://nickyYyoga.com https://www.youtube.com/@TheConnectedCommunity [email protected] https://www.instagram.com/kambo_mama/     Keywords: ego, self-development, spirituality, Jungian psychology, personal growth, self-love, shadow work, identity, community, psychological development, individuation, ego, self-discovery, spiritual development, shamanism,
Ego Death and Rebirth: Dark Night of the Soul
2026/05/14
In this episode of The Connected Community Podcast, Nicky Yazbeck sits down with Melissa Kim Corter for a deeply reflective conversation on the dark night of the soul and the role of shadow work in personal transformation. Together, they explore how periods of darkness, often marked by loss, illness, or identity collapse, can become catalysts for profound healing when approached with awareness and surrender.   Melissa brings a unique perspective shaped by decades of work with the hidden dimensions of the psyche. As the author of Apothecary for the Afflicted: Shadow Work for Invisible Wounds, a certified death investigator, and a scholar completing her PhD in depth psychology and Jungian archetypal studies, her approach blends psychology with symbolism drawn from fairy tales, film, and the macabre. Her work centers on the misunderstood and often avoided aspects of the personality, offering a creative and unconventional lens into shadow integration.   Throughout the conversation, Melissa and Nicky share personal experiences of navigating their own dark nights, unpacking themes of ego death, surrender, and the discomfort of facing what has been buried or avoided. They clarify what the dark night of the soul is, and what it is not, while offering insight into how to recognize when someone is moving through this kind of internal transformation.   The episode moves beyond theory into lived experience, exploring how shadow work can support individuals in meeting these moments with curiosity rather than resistance. 2026/04/30
In this episode of The Connected Community Podcast, Nicky Yazbeck sits down with Ania Halama for a conversation on working with ayahuasca in a way that is responsible, informed, and deeply intentional. After eight years living in Colombia and a decade in relationship with the medicine, four of those in service, Ania shares what most people don’t hear: the real preparation, the risks, the differences in ceremonies across regions, and why not all ayahuasca is the same.   She explains variations like crudo ayahuasca, a gentler preparation method that supports the nervous system, and speaks to how lineage, sourcing, and facilitation shape the experience. The conversation moves beyond the ceremony itself and into what actually creates change—preparation before, and integration after. Ania emphasizes that this work isn’t about a single night, but a longer process that can span months if someone wants lasting results.   They also explore the ethics behind plant medicine, including the law of reciprocity and the responsibility to give back to the indigenous communities who have carried these traditions. Ania offers practical guidance on choosing a retreat, what to ask, and how to discern safety and integrity in a space that’s rapidly growing in popularity.   This episode cuts through the noise around ayahuasca and brings the focus back to what matters: respect for the medicine, responsibility for your own process, and the understanding that the real work happens in how you live afterward.   Key Topics: Types of Ayahuasca (Crudo, Yaje, Traditional) Preparation and Diet (Dieta) Safety and Medical Precautions The Experience and Effects of Ayahuasca The Importance of Integration and Follow-up Cultural and Ethical Considerations in Plant Medicine Differences Between Ceremonies in Peru, Colombia, Brazil, and Hawaii Sourcing and Sustainability of Medicinal Plants Personal Journey and Transformation with Ayahuasca Guidelines for Choosing a Reputable Retreat Center     Chapters 00:00 Introduction to Ayahuasca and Ania's Journey 03:22 Understanding Ayahuasca: The Basics 09:44 The Experience of Ayahuasca: Healing and Clarity 14:15 Integration: The Key to Lasting Change 20:30 Safety and Misconceptions about Ayahuasca 22:30 Understanding Ayahuasca and Supplement Interactions 22:57 The Importance of Dieta Before Ayahuasca 25:14 The Law of Reciprocity in Ayahuasca Ceremonies 27:43 Sustainable Harvesting of Ayahuasca 29:04 The Impact of Ayahuasca Vine Age on Experience 30:41 Risks of Tobacco in Ayahuasca Preparations 31:42 Key Questions for Choosing a Retreat Center 33:28 Differences in Ayahuasca from Various Regions 36:10 Finding the Right Ayahuasca Experience 37:28 Setting Intentions and Expectations 40:34 Navigating the Depths of Ayahuasca Experiences 42:23 Connecting with Ania and Future Retreats     Connect with me: https://nickyYyoga.com https://www.youtube.com/@TheConnectedCommunity [email protected]   Connect with Ania: https://aniahalama.com/ https://facebook.com/ania.e.halama https://www.instagram.com/ania.halama/ http://linkedin.com/in/aniahalama     Keywords: ayahuasca, plant medicine, integration, jungle retreat, ceremonial preparation, medicinal plants, spiritual awakening, healing, reciprocity, safety, yage, crudo, jungle medicine, law of reciprocity, dieta
Step Fully Into Your Authenticity
2026/04/16
In this episode of The Connected Community Podcast, host Nicky Yazbeck chats with transformational coach Ben Milston for a deeply honest conversation about breaking free from conditioning, healing emotional wounds, and reconnecting with your authentic self.   Ben shares his powerful journey from childhood struggles and depression into a path of self-discovery, emotional healing, and personal empowerment. Together, Nicky and Ben explore how internalized beliefs shape identity, self-worth, and relational patterns, and what it actually takes to unravel those patterns in a real, embodied way.   This conversation moves beyond surface-level self-development into the deeper work of sitting with discomfort, questioning long-held narratives, and allowing space for vulnerability and truth. Neurodiversity: Beyond Labels and Stereotypes
2026/04/02
Dr. Joel Schwartz is a licensed clinical psychologist based in San Luis Obispo, California, with a private practice focused on complex and often misunderstood cases. He has worked across a wide range of settings, including colleges, clinics, a federal prison, and residential treatment centers, bringing depth and real-world experience to his work with diverse populations.   Joel is a thought leader in the neurodiversity movement, having coined the term Neurodiversity Affirmative Therapy and the identity-forward term “ADHDer,” offering a way for individuals to claim ADHD as a valid and meaningful part of who they are. His work challenges traditional, pathology-based models and instead centers on understanding, acceptance, and a more expansive view of human cognition.   In this episode of The Connected Community: Exploring Possibility, we explore neurodiversity, ADHD, autism, and the importance of understanding and embracing neurological differences. Joel shares insights on the impact of language and identity, the experience of masking, and the emotional toll that can come from trying to fit into systems not designed for neurodivergent individuals.   We discuss how differences in brain functioning are often misunderstood, and how shifting from a deficit-based lens to one of curiosity and acceptance can be profoundly healing. Joel also speaks to the importance of creating environments that support authenticity, where unmasking is not only safe but encouraged.   This conversation offers a humanizing perspective on neurodiversity, inviting listeners to move beyond labels and stereotypes and toward a deeper understanding of themselves and others.     Key Topics: Neurodiversity and its meaning Terminology and identity in neurodiversity Brain differences in ADHD and autism Masking and unmasking experiences Support needs and accommodations for neurodiverse individuals       Chapters: 00:00 Understanding Neurodiversity 07:21 The Complexity of Identity and Labels 13:22 Neuroscience Behind Neurodiversity 17:58 Empathy and Communication in Neurodivergent Individuals 23:58 The Impact of Masking on Neurodivergent Lives 29:48 Empowering Neurodivergent Children 31:38 Understanding ADHD and Learning Styles 35:14 The Role of Physical Activity in Managing ADHD 39:49 Navigating Social Situations with Neurodiversity 43:28 The Importance of Testing and Diagnosis 48:01 Trauma and Its Impact on Neurodiverse Individuals 50:02 Respecting Neurodiversity and Individual Needs     Connect with me: https://nickyYyoga.com https://www.youtube.com/@TheConnectedCommunity [email protected]   Connect with Joel: Website: neuro-pathways.org  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joel-schwartz-psyd-40181614/ Links to courses: https://tcsppofficeofce.com/courses/challenging-myths-about-autism-what-assessors-and-therapists-need-to-know-lessons-from-the-neurodiversity-movement/   https://tcsppofficeofce.com/courses/neurodiversity-affirming-understanding-and-care-for-adhd/       TAGS: neurodiversity, ADHD, autism, neurodivergent, masking, support, brain differences, neurodiversity movement, self-acceptance, accommodations, traum, neurodiverse
Meet the Host: Nicky Yazbeck's Healing Journey
2026/03/19
In this special episode of The Connected Community Podcast: Exploring Possibility, the microphone turns toward host Nicky Yazbeck as she is interviewed by Bethany Shipley. The conversation offers listeners a deeper look into Nicky’s personal and professional journey, from her decades of work as a licensed clinical social worker and yoga teacher to her exploration of holistic and alternative healing practices. This episode invites listeners to see another side of Nicky: the healer, the learner, the question-asker, and the human being continually walking her own path of growth.   Bethany Shipley is a writer, speaker, and podcast host who helps people reconnect with themselves and create lives that actually feel meaningful. She’s known for reframing the idea of “personal brand” away from marketing and toward presence, integrity, and the way we live our everyday lives. Through her podcast, Your Personal Brand with Bethany Shipley, Bethany explores what it looks like to romanticize real life realistically, trust your inner cues, and stop treating personal growth like a performance. Her work is grounded, honest, and focused on helping people feel oriented rather than optimized. Bethany believes you don’t need a different life. You just need a deeper relationship with the one you’re already living.     Bethany guides the conversation as Nicky reflects on what inspired her to create the podcast and her desire to move beyond surface-level conversations into meaningful dialogue about healing, personal growth, and the human experience. Nicky shares how her professional training, life experiences, and deep curiosity have shaped the way she approaches therapy and space-holding. She discusses the importance of meeting clients where they are, helping people understand their pain, and creating environments where acceptance can soften defenses and allow genuine healing to begin.   The episode also explores Nicky’s evolving perspective on mental health treatment. She speaks about the balance between Western psychological approaches and alternative modalities, emphasizing that healing is not one-size-fits-all. The conversation touches on the role of medication, the difference between depression rooted in life circumstances versus biological factors, and the importance of considering the whole person when supporting mental health.   Bethany and Nicky also discuss transformative experiences that helped shape Nicky’s path, including travel, personal exploration, and her openness to learning from diverse healing traditions. Nicky shares her thoughts on plant medicine and amphibian medicine, discussing both the potential benefits and the ethical responsibilities involved in these practices. Throughout the conversation, she emphasizes that powerful healing modalities require discernment, preparation, and integration.   At its core, this episode is about curiosity, self-discovery, and the courage to question societal expectations. Nicky reflects on breaking free from the “shoulds” that often shape our lives and embracing a path that aligns with personal truth. She also shares her vision for the future, which encompasses continuing to integrate different healing modalities and helping people reconnect with themselves.     Takeaways The podcast allows Nicky to connect with experts and share their wisdom with the audience. Nicky emphasizes the importance of personal experience in understanding pain and healing Acceptance is crucial in therapy, allowing clients to lower their defenses. Nicky's curiosity drives her to continuously learn and explore new ideas. Breaking free from societal expectations is essential for fulfillment. Transformative experiences often lead to significant life changes. Combining Eastern and Western healing modalities can be beneficial. Medication can be necessary, but it's not a cure-all. Plant medicine offers unique healing opportunities but requires careful consideration. Mental health treatment should be individualized and holistic. Ethics in alternative healing practices are crucial for client safety. Self-acceptance is a continuous journey that requires effort.     Chapters 00:00 Introduction and Podcast Journey 02:59 The Intersection of Personal and Professional 05:49 Understanding Pain and Healing 08:59 The Role of Acceptance in Therapy 11:52 Curiosity and Lifelong Learning 14:44 Breaking Free from the 'Shoulds' 17:39 Transformational Experiences and Self-Discovery 20:32 Integrating Eastern and Western Practices 24:26 Navigating Beliefs and Mental Health 25:39 Understanding Depression: Circumstances vs. Chemical Imbalance 29:27 Exploring Frog Medicine: A Unique Healing Approach 36:50 The Journey of Healing: Personal Growth and Transformation 45:36 OUTRO   Connect with me: https://nickyYyoga.com https://www.youtube.com/@TheConnectedCommunity [email protected]   Connect with Bethany: www.bethanyshipley.com www.instagram.com/bethanyjshipley   Keywords: podcast, healing, therapy, personal growth, mental health, mindfulness, self-discovery, holistic health, Eastern medicine, Western medicine, mental health, depression, kambo frog medicine, emotional well-being, self-acceptance, holistic health, alternative therapies
