155: Barbara Kelley: A Murder on the California Coast
2026/09/29
On a June night in 1950, seventeen-year-old Barbara Kelley left home for a date with Henry Baird, a 28-year-old World War II veteran she had been seeing for several months. Barbara told her parents she would spend the night at a friend’s house in nearby Eureka. There was no reason for them to worry. The next morning, Henry was found nude on a remote beach along the Northern California coast. He had been shot to death. His companion, Barbara, was nowhere to be found.Henry had been shot in the back of the head. Nearby, his clothes were found neatly stacked. With them were Barbara’s clothes. But there was no sign of Barbara. Within hours, police began to investigate the theory the teenager had been involved in Henry’s death. In the years since the murder and disappearance, speculation has run rampant including false confessions, searches through the woods, and a connection to an eerily similar case in another county. But at the heart of it all is Barbara Kelley, a seventeen-year-old girl who went on a date and never came home.📍 Humboldt County, California | June 17, 1950

153: Jacqueline Levitz: A Disappearance in Vicksburg
2026/09/22
On November 18, 1995, Jacqueline “Jackie” Levitz spent two hours choosing wallpaper for the new home she was renovating in Vicksburg, Mississippi. She had only recently moved back to the area to be closer to her family, and she was already imagining the house as a gathering place for the people she loved. That shopping excursion would be the last time anyone saw her.Two days later, a friend went to check on Jackie after her family realized she wasn’t answering the phone. Her Jaguar was still parked outside and her jewelry and fur coats were still in the house. A television was playing in the bedroom and a half-finished glass of water sat on the windowsill. But Jackie was gone. The search for Jackie produced possible witnesses and conflicting theories about what happened to Jackie that night, but none of those brought law enforcement any closer to finding Jackie or learning what happened to her.Today, more than three decades later, Jacqueline Levitz remains missing.

152: Still Missing: The Disappearance of Irene Silverman, Pt 3
2026/09/15
Irene Silverman was missing. And by the time Sante and Kenneth Kimes went to trial for her murder, there was still no body, no murder weapon, and no definitive account of what happened to her the day she was last seen.
The prosecution was face with building a "no body" murder case, a tricky proposition even with the mounting evidence against Sante and Kenneth. So they carefully assembled a slate of witnesses and evidence: Sante's notebooks, a forged deed, wigs, and testimony from friends and staff who could attest to what had been happening in Irene's mansion in the days leading up to her disappearance. As the lead up trial heated up, investigators around the country started scouring their own records intent on answering one question: what other crimes might the mother and son duo have committed. And as they dug, the list of crimes grew. But back in New York, those who loved Irene were faced with a question they still don't have answers for today: where was Irene. In Part 3 of our three-part series on Irene Silverman, we share the trail of devastation the Kimses left and just what questions are left in Irene’s disappearance.📍 Manhattan, New York | July 5, 1998

151: The Man in the Mansion: The Disappearance of Irene Silverman, Pt 2
2026/09/08
By the summer of 1998, Irene Silverman was becoming increasingly uneasy about her new tenant.Manny Guerin had only been a tenant for a few days when he started making her uncomfortable. He would avoid her eyes when they passed, slink around the edges of the lobby to stay out of range of the security camera, and he seemed to be sneaking an older woman into his apartment.Irene noticed it all, and she wanted him gone. She asked her building manager to draw up the eviction notice. But on July 5th, Irene disappeared. And there was only one suspect.
Investigators moved in quickly, releasing a sketch of Manny Guerin to the public. What they quickly learned is that Manny might not have been his real name after all. Instead, they already had in custody a man named Kenneth Kimes and his mother, Sante Kimes.Just as quickly, they'd learn who they were dealing with: a pair of grifters who had been conducting increasingly violent crimes as they crossed the country. And it seemed like Irene was one of their targets. In Part 2 of our three-part series on Irene Silverman, we journey into the days leading up to Irene’s disappearance and see just who rented an apartment in her mansion.📍 Manhattan, New York | July 5, 1998

150: The White Elephant: The Disappearance of Irene Silverman, Pt 1
2026/09/01
Before Irene Silverman was a missing woman, she was a ballerina, a wife, a hostess, and the owner of one of Manhattan's most unusual homes: a home that would become the centerpiece of her missing persons case.
Irene grew up in New Orleans and became a ballet dancer before moving to New York City. There, she joined the corps de ballet at Radio City Music Hall. In 1941, she married a businessman with a mysterious past: Samuel Silverman. And in the 1950s, the couple brough a six-story mansion on East 65th Street. Sam called it a "white elephant" but would come to admire the building, too. After his death in 1980, Irene made it her own.She renovated the mansion into apartments and filled it with an eclectic cast of tenants and guests, creating a kind of private Parisian salon in the heart of Manhattan. Irene entertained artists, businesspeople, intellectuals, and strangers. There she told stories about a life that sometimes seemed almost too colorful to be true. But the mansion that gave Irene a place to build a life would eventually make her a target. In Part 1 of our three-part series on Irene Silverman, we get to know the woman behind the headlines and the house at the center of her story.📍 Manhattan, New York | July 5, 1998

Hernando County Jane Doe: The Women Who Vanished Before Her, Part 1
2026/08/18
In 1980, Pam Sherrell escaped a violent attack by a man who abducted her and tried to kill her. He evaded capture, but her escape would set off a chain of events that revealed a much darker story unfolding in Hernando County, Florida.
Months later and thousands of miles away, two young women crossed paths with the same man at a bar. He tried to get them to leave with him. They refused, but as they watched he left the bar with another young woman: Rene Saling. The next day, Rene was found murdered.
Back in Florida, investigators were trying to solve the disappearance of another young woman: Sandra Jean Graham who had disappeared after an ordinary evening playing pool with a stranger.
And behind it all was a man whose history of violence stretched back years despite repeated encounters with the criminal justice system: Billy Mansfield Jr.
As investigators pieced together what happened to the women, Mansfield was on the run. HIs eventual capture would expose a pattern of violence that stretched far beyond the murder of Rene Saling.
And somewhere in the story was a woman whose name investigators would not learn for more than 40 years. She is still known only as Hernando County Jane Doe

San Diego’s Lost Women, Episode 3: The Jane Does
2026/07/28
Law enforcement called some of San Diego's missing and murdered women "NHIs," short for No Humans Involved. It was police slang used to describe victims they believed didn't matter.By 1988, the number of women disappearing from San Diego County had become impossible to ignore. Years before, the sheriff had said there was not a disproportionate number of women, but by the time forty-three women were murdered or went missing, the public started pushing for answers.
There would be few to find.In the final episode of our three-part series, we examine the investigation that became one of the largest homicide task forces in California history, the competing theories that shaped the search for answers, and the unidentified women who remain without names decades later. We also explore how police culture, public perception, and systemic failures influenced which victims received urgency and which did not.The women of El Cajon Boulevard were never one story. They were daughters, mothers, sisters, and friends whose lives intersected in a city that too often looked away. This is the final chapter of San Diego's Lost Women.

San Diego’s Lost Women, Episode 2: Mary Colette Rawlinson
2026/07/21
In October 1985, 19-year-old Mary Colette Rawlinson walked out of a home in San Diego, California, telling her boyfriend she'd be right back. She was never seen again.
As more women disappeared from El Cajon Boulevard and the surrounding communities, investigators struggled to answer a troubling question: were these isolated crimes, or was someone hunting women across San Diego County?
In Part Two of our three-part series, we widen the lens beyond a single case to examine the growing pattern of disappearances and murders targeting women living at the intersection of addiction, poverty, and survival sex work. Through the stories of Mary Colette Rawlinson and the women who vanished alongside her, we look at how fear spread through the community while families fought to convince authorities that their daughters deserved to be searched for.
The mounting number of victims would eventually force law enforcement to confront the possibility that the cases were connected, but by then, many women were already gone.
This is Part Two of our three-part series, San Diego's Lost Women.

San Diego’s Lost Women, Episode 1: Cynthia Maine
2026/07/14
In the 1980s, dozens of women disappeared from San Diego, California. One of them was 26-year-old Cynthia Maine.
Cynthia was a daughter, sister, mother, and woman trying to survive addiction while working along El Cajon Boulevard, San Diego’s notorious red light district. By 1986, she was rebuilding her life. She had found work as a waitress, but she was also serving as a police informant. Just months before she vanished, she had allegedly begun an affair with one of her police contacts.
Late in February, she told her family she was going to watch a movie.
She never came home.
As investigators searched for Cynthia, few realized they were witnessing the beginning of one of the largest unsolved series of murders and disappearances in California history.
In the first episode of this three-part investigation, we examine Cynthia's disappearance alongside the murder of her friend Donna Gentile. Together, their stories reveal a hidden world of vice squads, confidential informants, police corruption, and the extraordinary risks faced by women living on the margins of San Diego in the mid-1980s.
This series asks how so many women could disappear from one city and why so many of their cases remain unsolved decades later.

The Only Missing WASP: The Disappearance of Gertrude Tompkins Silver
2026/07/07
On October 26, 1944, Gertrude "Tommy" Tompkins Silver took off from Mines Field in Los Angeles in a P-51 Mustang on what should have been a routine ferry flight.
She never arrived.
Gertrude was one of the pioneering Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs), the civilian women who flew military aircraft during World War II so male pilots could be sent overseas. She was also the only WASP to disappear during the war whose aircraft has never been recovered.
In this episode, we explore Gertrude's extraordinary life, from a childhood marked by a debilitating stutter and an unlikely love of goats to world travel, flight, and a quiet wartime marriage just weeks before she vanished.
More than eighty years later, the fate of Gertrude Tompkins Silver remains one of the last great mysteries of the WASPs.
In this episode we talk about women in aviation, World War II history, and the enduring search for one remarkable pilot who never came home.

The Disappearance of Ilonka Cann: A Coroner’s Jury Speaks
2026/06/30
On May 26, 1970, twenty-six-year-old Ilonka Cann vanished from the rural Pennsylvania farmhouse she shared with her husband and fifteen-month-old son.
The day before, she had spoken with her parents in Ohio and talked about coming home for a visit that summer.
She never made that trip.
In the weeks and months that followed, investigators searched fields, ponds, and woodlots surrounding the isolated property where Ilonka was last believed to have been seen. Her family spent decades searching for answers as the case slowly faded from public memory.
More than fifty years later, renewed interest in Ilonka's disappearance led to new searches, a coroner's inquest, and testimony that cast the events of May 1970 in a very different light.
In 2024, a coroner's jury concluded that Ilonka Cann died by homicide at the hands of another person.
This episode examines the disappearance of Ilonka Cann, the decades-long search for answers, and what it means when official recognition arrives generations after a woman goes missing.

Stories are pretty good, but the casual conversational tone is so offputting. Narration is lacking. Something about the tone of voice is just grating....
