125: How to Navigate a Broken Fertility Care System with Dr. Gabriela Rosa
2026/10/06
Fertility Care That Starts With Better Questions When you have been trying to conceive and keep hearing that everything looks “fine,” it can be hard to know what to ask next. In this episode, I talk with Dr. Gabriela Rosa about the value of understanding your own health information and finding care that considers your full story. Gabriela explains why a test result needs context, why sperm health belongs in the conversation when applicable, and why repeating a treatment without understanding the reasoning can leave people feeling stuck. We also talk about the emotional weight of fertility challenges and how to prepare for an appointment so you can take a more active role in decisions about your care. There is no universal checklist or guaranteed path to pregnancy. My hope is that this conversation helps you feel more able to ask for an explanation, a copy of your results, or another perspective when something does not make sense. In This Episode, We Cover Why “normal” or “fine” test results in typical fertility assessments may need more explanationLooking at both partners’ histories and test results when relevantHow a fuller health history can guide questions about next stepsPreparing specific questions before an appointmentFinding support without taking on the burden of figuring everything out aloneResources Mentioned Dr. Gabriela Rosa’s free Fertility Challenge Fertility Breakthrough, available in audio on Spotify  Gabriela Rosa Fertility on Instagram  This conversation is educational and cannot replace care tailored to your circumstances. 124: Birth Preparation Isn’t Enough: Preparing for Parenthood With Nina Spears
2026/09/15
Preparing for birth matters—but it is only one part of preparing to become a parent. In this episode, I sit down with Nina Spears, founder of Baby Chick and a certified baby planner, birth and postpartum doula, childbirth educator, newborn care educator, infant massage instructor, and perinatal nutrition expert. Together, we talk about matrescence and patrescence, why postpartum planning must go beyond freezer meals and baby gear, and how partners can become proactive co-parents instead of waiting to be assigned tasks. We also discuss mental health preparation, visitor boundaries, sleep, household responsibilities, and the support systems that can make the transition feel less isolating. In This Episode, We Cover: Why childbirth education matters—and why preparation should continue beyond labor The identity shifts of matrescence and patrescence How expectations, exhaustion, and the invisible mental load can affect relationships Conversations to have about sleep, feeding, parental leave, household work, and intimacy Why partners should notice, learn, and take ownership before being asked How to build a postpartum support plan for meals, older children, visitors, and check-ins Preparing for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders before support is urgently needed Why a positive experience means feeling informed, prepared, and supported—not achieving perfection You do not have to predict every part of birth or parenthood to prepare well. The goal is not control or perfection. It is to build enough knowledge, communication, and support that you can meet change without feeling completely alone in it. 123: When Birth Plans Change: Dominique and Kevin’s Empowered Induction Birth Story
2026/09/01
A birth plan can change without taking your power away. In this episode, I welcome Dominique and Kevin back into conversation to revisit the birth of their daughter, Nora—a story I had the privilege of supporting as their doula. Their journey was shaped by pregnancy after loss, an unexpected cholestasis diagnosis, an induction, and the steady support that helped them stay grounded when their original vision shifted. Dominique, a pelvic floor physical therapist, entered pregnancy with a strong understanding of the body and a hope for spontaneous, low-intervention labor. When cholestasis changed the plan, I supported Dominique and Kevin as they learned about their options, spoke with their care team, and revised their birth preferences without giving up their autonomy. Together, we talk about what an induction can actually look like, why the language we use during labor matters, and how Kevin approached his role as a birth partner with calm, reverence, and full attention. I also invited Dominique to share what becoming a parent taught her about postpartum recovery—even as someone who professionally supports pregnant and postpartum patients. In This Episode, We Cover How two pregnancy losses shaped Dominique and Kevin’s next pregnancy and care decisionsThe itching that led to Dominique’s cholestasis diagnosis and a change in their birth planHow birth education helped them understand induction options and retain a sense of agencyUsing rest, movement, position changes, breath, and supportive language during laborThe moment Dominique moved from panic and self-doubt into pushingHow Kevin stayed present without taking over Dominique’s decisionsWhy choosing pain medication—or changing your mind about it—is never a failureWhat Dominique’s own postpartum recovery taught her about slowing down and listening to the bodyI hope you carry from this episode is that an empowered birth is not one in which every detail unfolds exactly as planned. It is one in which you feel informed, respected, supported, and able to participate in the decisions along the way. Flexibility and autonomy can exist together. 2026/08/18
In this episode of The Mindful Womb Podcast, I sat down with my friend and colleague Megan Peasely of Illuminated Birth & Co. As doulas and childbirth educators, we talk about something we both feel deeply passionate about: the importance of finding your village. We explore why local support matters, how your provider and birth setting can shape your experience, and why having people in your corner who understand the landscape of care in your area can make such a meaningful difference. We also discuss how childbirth educators, doulas, and community spaces can help bridge the gap between information and true support. At its heart, this conversation is a reminder that birth was never meant to be navigated alone. In this episode we cover: Why provider fit matters more than many people realizeQuestions to ask when choosing a hospital or birth settingThe difference between generic birth education and local birth knowledgeHow teaching hospitals and community hospitals can create different experiencesWhy advocacy starts long before labor beginsHow doulas and childbirth educators help families navigate the maternity care systemThe importance of building your support system before your baby arrivesPractical ways to find your village in your local communityIf this episode leaves you realizing that birth advocacy starts long before labor, you might also enjoy my Birth Advocacy Toolkit, which can help you feel more confident navigating conversations with your care team and making informed decisions throughout pregnancy. 121: Choosing Childcare with Intention, What to Look For & What Questions to Ask - with Antoinette Elliott
2026/08/04
Choosing childcare can feel overwhelming, emotional, and deeply personal — especially when you are trying to balance practical needs with the desire to find a place where your child truly feels safe and supported. In this episode, I’m joined by Antoinette Elliott, founder of All Our Children Elite Childcare Academy, a nature-based childcare center in Georgia. Together, we talk about what emotionally attuned childcare actually looks like, how parents can evaluate childcare environments with more confidence, and the often-overlooked emotional side of this decision. This conversation goes far beyond waitlists and logistics. We explore responsive caregiving, nervous system awareness, emotional safety, developmental support, and why trusting your intuition matters when choosing care for your child. Antoinette also shares practical guidance on what to look for during childcare tours, questions parents should ask, and how supportive environments can make a meaningful difference for both children and caregivers. In this episode, we cover: What emotionally responsive childcare looks like in practiceGreen flags and red flags to notice during childcare toursWhy caregiver personality and emotional regulation matterSupporting neurodivergent children and children with additional needsHow nature-based childcare can support developmentHelping children transition into childcare more smoothlyWhy parents should trust their instincts when evaluating a childcare settingThe importance of supporting parents, not just childrenOne of my favorite reminders from this episode is that childcare is not simply about supervision. It is about relationships, emotional safety, and creating environments where children can feel genuinely seen and supported. 120: The 3 Skills Every Birth Partner Needs Before Labor Starts
2026/07/21
When people imagine a supportive birth partner, they often picture someone who is loving, encouraging, and present. While those qualities absolutely matter, they are only the foundation of effective birth support. In this episode, we explore why good intentions alone are not enough during labor and birth. Birth is an intense, unpredictable, and deeply transformative experience, and partners need practical skills—not just love—to confidently support the birthing person through it. You'll learn the three essential skills every birth partner should develop before labor begins: Comfort MeasuresAdvocacyEmotional SteadinessThese skills can be learned, practiced, and strengthened throughout pregnancy, helping both partners feel more confident, connected, and prepared for the realities of labor. Key Takeaway A supportive birth partner doesn't need to be perfect. They don't need to become a doula or know everything about birth. They simply need preparation, practical tools, and a willingness to learn. When birth partners develop skills in comfort measures, advocacy, and emotional steadiness, they become an active source of support rather than a bystander waiting for instructions. 119: Rethinking Fertility: Stress, Safety, Toxins, and the Missing Pieces of the Fertility Conversation - with Dr. Aumatma Simmons
2026/07/07
Fertility conversations are often filled with pressure, confusion, and overwhelming advice. And for many people trying to conceive, it can start to feel like their body is somehow failing them. In this episode, I’m joined by Dr. Aumatma Simmons, naturopathic doctor, holistic fertility expert, and creator of Madre Fertility, for a deeply grounding conversation about what fertility support can look like when we move beyond fear, blame, and one-size-fits-all advice. We explore the difference between stress and safety in the body, why fertility struggles are often more nuanced than age alone, and how toxins, nervous system regulation, inflammation, and partner health all play a role in conception and pregnancy outcomes. Dr. Aumatma also shares how her own fertility journey shaped her work and why helping people understand their personal “why” can completely change the fertility experience. This conversation is both practical and deeply compassionate. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by fertility advice, discouraged by timelines, or unsupported in the process, I think this episode will feel validating and empowering. In this episode, we cover: Why fertility is far more complex than most people are taughtThe difference between “stress” and feeling safe in your bodyHow nervous system dysregulation can impact fertilityCommon myths around age and fertilityThe role toxins and inflammation may play in conceptionWhy partner health matters more than many people realizeThe emotional weight of fertility struggles and feeling “broken.”How understanding your unique fertility picture can change the path forwardA different approach to fertility support that feels collaborative instead of fear-basedFertility journeys can bring up so much grief, pressure, uncertainty, and self-blame. But this episode is a reminder that your body is not your enemy. Support matters. Context matters. And understanding what your body may be asking for can create space for a very different experience moving forward. 118: How to Choose Where to Give Birth in Massachusetts
2026/06/23
Choosing where to give birth is about much more than proximity, provider preference, or a friend's recommendation. Your birthplace shapes your options, your support, your experience, and even how safe your body feels during labor. In this episode, we're exploring how to evaluate birth settings in Massachusetts and the questions every expecting parent should ask before making a decision. In this episode, we cover: Why your birthplace is more than just a buildingHow birth culture influences your experienceThe differences between hospital birth with an OB and hospital birth with midwivesFreestanding birth center options in MassachusettsHome birth as a model of careHow to determine where you feel safest giving birthQuestions to ask when touring hospitals and birth centersUnderstanding provider models and who may attend your birthTransfer plans, NICU levels, and escalation of careGreen flags and red flags when evaluating a birth settingHow to identify whether a birth environment aligns with your goalsThe best birth location isn't the same for everyone. 117: Home Birth in Massachusetts: What Expectant Families Should Know - with Noel Fernandez, CPM
2026/06/09
In this episode of The Mindful Womb Podcast, I’m joined by Noel Fernandez, CPM of Solid Ground Midwifery for a conversation about home birth in Massachusetts — what it actually looks like, what people often misunderstand about it, and why more families are exploring it as a thoughtful, evidence-based option. We talk about the different types of birth professionals people may encounter, including OBs, midwives, and doulas, and how those roles differ. We also explore why so many families are drawn to home birth not just because they want fewer interventions, but because they are longing for something deeper: more continuity, more autonomy, more time, more relationship-based care, and a birth environment that feels calm and familiar. In this episode, we cover: what makes planned home birth safe and responsiblehow home birth midwives are trained and what equipment they bringwhy the prenatal care experience in home birth care often feels so differenthow to think about both physical and emotional safety when choosing where to give birthwhat hospital transfer actually looks like and why it is often misunderstoodthe unique logistics of planning a home birth in Massachusettswhat postpartum care at home can offer familiesand what questions to ask when interviewing a home birth midwife. This conversation is a helpful reminder that the “best” place to give birth is not one-size-fits-all. The real goal is not to defend one birth setting over another. It is to help each family find the provider, environment, and support system where they feel safest, most respected, and most able to labor well. If you’ve been curious about home birth, or simply want a more nuanced and grounded understanding of your options, this episode is a beautiful place to start. 116: Birth Advocacy in the Hospital: Why a Birth Plan Alone Is Not Enough
2026/05/26
When many expecting parents begin preparing for birth, one of the first things they hear is: make a birth plan. And while birth plans can absolutely be helpful, they are often misunderstood. A birth plan is not a guarantee.  It is not a legal contract.  And it is not the same thing as advocacy. In this episode of The Mindful Womb Podcast, we’re talking about what real birth advocacy actually looks like in a hospital setting — and why handing over a beautifully written birth plan is only one small piece of the bigger picture. Because the truth is, advocacy is not just about knowing what you want on paper. It’s about understanding your rights.  It’s about staying connected to your values.  It’s about recognizing the difference between hospital policy and informed consent.  And it’s about knowing how to participate in decisions as labor unfolds in real time. In this episode, I cover: what a birth plan is — and what it is notwhy labor can feel very different in real life than it did on paperwhy entering a hospital does not mean giving up your autonomythe nuance between hospital policy and your right to informed decision-makinghow advocacy often happens in small, quiet moments rather than one big confrontationwhy the best advocacy starts before laborhow choosing the right provider, learning common interventions, and preparing your partner all matterand why advocacy is not about controlling every outcome, but staying informed and connected to your values even when plans shiftThis episode is for anyone preparing for a hospital birth who wants to feel more clear, more grounded, and more equipped to navigate labor as an active participant in their care. 115: Why Reproductive Journeys Can Feel So Lonely & How to Build Support That Truly Helps - with Chandler Cook Estevez
2026/05/12
In this episode of The Mindful Womb Podcast, I’m joined by Chandler Cook Estevez, LICSW, for a conversation about one of the most overlooked truths of reproductive health: you were never meant to carry these journeys alone. Together, we explore why fertility struggles, miscarriage, pregnancy after loss, endometriosis, postpartum recovery, and other reproductive experiences can feel so uniquely isolating — even when you are surrounded by people who love you. We talk about the “private struggle” problem that so many people find themselves caught in, where pain gets hidden behind silence, and silence creates even more isolation. We also explore the deeper emotional layers that reproductive health journeys can touch — body trust, self-worth, grief, control, hope, partnership, and identity — and why these experiences can feel so much bigger than what is visible from the outside. In this episode, we cover: why reproductive health journeys can feel deeply lonely, even when you’re not physically alonehow secrecy and stigma can make pain feel heavierwhy “should” language so often turns into shame languagehow isolation affects the nervous systemwhy asking for help can feel so difficult when you’re already overwhelmedsimple, specific ways to ask for support more clearlywhat kinds of support often miss the markand how to begin building a village that actually feels sustaining. This episode is such an important reminder that the goal is not to become tougher or less affected by what you’re going through. The goal is to become more supported. If you are navigating fertility challenges, loss, reproductive uncertainty, pregnancy stress, postpartum overwhelm, or simply a season that feels heavier than people around you realize, I hope this conversation helps you feel a little less alone. 114: When Your First Birth Was Hard: Preparing for a Healing Second Birth - with Arialle Weinstein
2026/05/11
What happens when you go into a second pregnancy still carrying pain, disappointment, or unresolved feelings from your first birth? In this episode of The Mindful Womb Podcast, I’m sharing Arialle’s story — a parent who entered their second pregnancy knowing they did not want to repeat the same experience they had the first time around. After a long and difficult first birth, Arialle found themself carrying anxiety about labor, questions about what could be different, and a deep desire to feel more supported and more empowered this time. What followed was a second pregnancy shaped by intentional preparation, stronger support, a provider change, and a very different relationship to birth itself. In this conversation, we explore: what it can feel like to enter another pregnancy after a hard first birthhow doula support helped Arialle understand their options more clearlywhy switching providers late in pregnancy can sometimes be the right choicethe role of pelvic floor physical therapy, acupuncture, and chiropractic care in feeling more supported physicallywhy pregnancy discomfort is not always something you simply have to accepthow practical preparation helped lower stress in the final weeks of pregnancythe comfort tools that helped during laborand what made this second birth feel so healing, even though it still included unexpected moments.Arialle’s story is such a powerful reminder that healing after a difficult first birth does not necessarily mean getting a “perfect” second birth. Often, it means entering the experience with more knowledge, more support, more self-trust, and more willingness to honor what your intuition is telling you. If you are pregnant again after a birth that left you with hard feelings, this episode is for you. 113: How to Have a Low-Intervention Birth: What Actually Matters Most
2026/04/14
So much of the advice around low-intervention birth focuses on what to do during labor. Drink the tea. Bounce on the ball. Make the playlist. Trust your body. And while some of those things can absolutely be supportive, they are not the main reason some people are more likely to have a low-intervention birth. In this episode of The Mindful Womb Podcast, we explore a powerful reframe: A low-intervention birth usually starts long before labor. Because having a low-intervention birth is often less about luck, pain tolerance, or “doing birth right”… and much more about your preparation, your support team, your provider, your birth setting, and your understanding of the interventions most likely to shape labor. In this episode, I break down what actually matters most if you’re hoping to support physiologic labor and reduce unnecessary interventions — while also staying flexible and grounded if birth unfolds differently than expected. In this episode, we cover: what “low-intervention birth” actually meanswhy provider philosophy and birth setting matter so muchcommon interventions that can shape the course of laborhow to build real coping capacity, not just inspirationhow movement, rest, nourishment, and environment support physiologic laborwhy flexibility matters just as much as preparationwhat to do during pregnancy if you’re hoping for a low-intervention birthThis episode is a great fit for you if you want a birth experience that supports physiology, informed decision-making, and agency — without falling into perfectionism or fear. 112: Resourced, Not Fearless: Birth Prep for the Anxious Mind - with Sophia Grammenos
2026/03/31
What if birth preparation wasn’t about becoming fearless? In this episode of The Mindful Womb Podcast, I’m joined by Sophia Grammenos (she/her) — an educator, first-generation daughter of immigrants, and someone who entered pregnancy with lived experience of anxiety, depression, and ADHD. Sophia’s story offers such an important reframe for how we think about childbirth preparation, confidence, and mental health. Because she didn’t prepare for birth by trying to force herself into feeling endlessly positive or perfectly confident. She prepared by becoming deeply supported. In this conversation, we explore what it can look like to prepare for birth when you live with anxiety or neurodivergence, why information overload can make fear worse, how understanding physiology can be incredibly grounding, and why building a wide range of coping tools matters so much in labor. We also talk about: how Sophia supported her mental health throughout pregnancywhy curating a small number of trusted resources can reduce anxietythe difference between “confidence” and true coping capacityhow labor physiology continues to work even when doubt is presentADHD, neurodivergence, and the unique focus some people experience in high-stakes momentswhat Sophia’s experience with PROM teaches us about informed decision-makingwhy rotating coping tools in labor can help prevent fatiguethe value of preparing for more than one possible birth pathwaySophia’s story is such a powerful reminder that birth preparation is not about perfection. It’s about building support. Understanding your options. Practicing skills. And creating enough internal and external resources to stay connected to yourself as labor unfolds. If you’ve ever worried that your anxiety, self-doubt, or neurodivergence might make birth harder, this episode offers a much more compassionate and realistic perspective.
