Would You Rather…Choose Joy?
2026/10/21
Sunday tech failures. Volunteer shortages. Long meetings. Getting sick right before service. Ministry gives us plenty of reasons to lose our joy. After a few rapid-fire ministry “Would You Rather” questions, we get into a deeper conversation about joy as a leadership posture, not a personality trait. What’s the difference between happiness and joy? How do you choose joy without being fake? And how does a leader’s attitude affect the people around them? We talk about protecting your team, processing emotions in healthy places, and learning to lead with joy even when circumstances aren’t ideal. You may not get to choose what happens, but you do get to choose what you carry into the room. Send us Fan Mail
Green Room Theology
2026/10/14
What happens before the platform matters more than what happens on it. In this episode, we talk about the hidden life behind public ministry and what happens when the room is loud, the band is tight, and everything “works,” but your soul is quietly starving. From Jesus’ warning in Matthew 6 to the pursuit of God’s presence in Exodus 33, we unpack spiritual formation, consecration, repentance, and the danger of measuring effectiveness by people’s reactions. What if prayer in the green room mattered more than performance on the platform? Because Sundays can only overflow from what God is doing in us when nobody is watching. Before there is authentic worship on the platform, there has to be an authentic life in the secret place. Send us Fan Mail
Covenant Friends
2026/10/07
You can know a lot of people and still feel alone. In this episode, we look at David and Jonathan and what it means to have friendships that go beyond convenience, proximity, or shared interests. Jonathan didn’t just know David. He found him in the wilderness and “strengthened his hand in God.” We talk about covenant friendship, why leaders need more than buddies, what keeps us from real connection, and the difference between a mentor and a true friend. We also unpack how small groups can become places where genuine community, discipleship, and care are built. The question isn’t just, “Who are your friends?” It’s who strengthens you, and who are you strengthening? Send us Fan Mail
When Ministry Breaks You
2026/09/30
Ministry can be the place where you meet God, and the place where you get hurt so badly you don't recognize yourself. We're Elmer Cañas Jr. and Willie C. Simpson, getting painfully honest about the moments when leadership pressure didn't just challenge us, it broke us. Elmer shares being a teenager who loved worship ministry, served constantly, then got pushed out of the church he called home. Willie brings a raw story from bivocational ministry: long hours, two little kids, a fast-growing church, and a breaking-point phone call with his wife that forced a choice between pride and wisdom. We dig into a lesson that reaches far beyond church work: idols always collapse. Using 2 Corinthians 1:8-9, we talk about being burdened beyond strength so we learn to rely on the God who raises the dead. Subscribe, share it with a friend who feels burned out, and leave a review. Follow Well Before You Lead - Part 2
2026/09/23
A leader looks you in the eye and says, "You're a liar." Not because you're lying, but because your words never get to the point. That kind of correction can trigger outrage, shame, and the urge to defend yourself or expose the other person's flaws. In this episode we talk honestly about what to do when correction hits hard and feels unfair, especially when the person correcting you has their own character issues. We unpack a key idea: respect is a feeling, but honor is a choice you show through your actions. How do you honor a leader you don't admire? Why does "water cooler" complaining quietly destroy a team? And where's the line, because if people are being harmed or policies broken, you speak up right away. David under Saul and Joseph under false accusation show us how to serve with humility without becoming a doormat. Subscribe, share it with a friend walking through a hard leadership season, and leave a review so more people can find the show. Send us Fan Mail
Follow Well Before You Lead - Part 1
2026/09/16
If you’ve ever thought, “I could run this better,” you might be skipping the one skill that makes great leaders: followership. We’re Elmer Cañas Jr. and Willie C. Simpson, and we go straight at the uncomfortable truth most people avoid. Everyone wants influence, but very few people want submission, patience, or the discipline of being led. We ground the conversation in 1 Samuel 24, where David has a perfect chance to take out King Saul and chooses restraint instead. That story opens a bigger discussion about honoring authority without excusing sin, and why most of our frustrations with leaders are not about biblical wrongdoing or illegal behavior but about preference. We unpack a simple filter that changes everything: is the tension about policy or preference? We also talk about how modern consumer culture, YouTube, and AI can create the illusion that we don’t need leaders, mentors, or craft, and how that mindset shows up at work, at home, and on worship teams. Then we get practical: loyalty is not silence. We share how to ask for clarity at the right time, how to carry a leader’s heart “downstream” without protecting their image, and the gut-check questions that reveal what kind of follower you really are, including “What is it like to lead me?” If you want to lead with integrity, learn to follow with humility. Subscribe for more conversations on worship, church leadership, and spiritual formation, then share this with a teammate and leave a review. What’s one preference you’ve been treating like a policy? The Ownership Shift
2026/09/09
If something breaks at church, do you call “the landlord,” or do you grab the toolbox? We’re naming a tension every ministry team feels: the difference between showing up like an employee and serving like an owner. That ownership shift changes how we handle messes, gaps, broken systems, and the quiet moments where someone needs prayer and nobody is officially assigned.  We anchor the conversation in Nehemiah 4:6, where the wall gets built because the people “had a mind to work.” That line pushes us toward unity of heart and shared responsibility. We also talk through what ownership looks like in real church leadership: not doing everything yourself, not measuring people by productivity, and not mistaking control for commitment. Owners sound different, too. They naturally say “our church” and “our people,” they care about how things could be better, and they stay close to the front line where ministry actually happens.  From worship teams to small groups, we share stories of leaders who grew into ownership through trust, clarity, personal investment, and discipleship. We also get honest about how leaders can accidentally kill ownership by saying no for volunteers, making assumptions about people’s capacity, or crowding the space where others need to grow. The answer is simple but not easy: ask, delegate, pray, call out gifts, and let the Holy Spirit do Holy Spirit things.  If you want a stronger church culture, healthier volunteer leadership, and ministry systems that serve people, hit play, then subscribe, share this with a leader on your team, and leave a review so more church leaders can find the conversation. Developed to Serve
2026/09/02
Jesus turned a towel into the clearest picture of leadership. In this episode we open John 13 and unpack three gut-check truths: the towel was never meant to protect you, the people who cost you the most are still worth serving, and you can’t give away what you were never developed to carry. Then we connect it to John 15, where abiding is the only path to fruit that lasts. Plus a look at Pastor Elmer’s book Developed. To get your copy of DEVELOPED click HERE. Discipling Busy People
2026/08/26
Your schedule isn't just packed, it's preaching. If we're not careful, the calendar becomes the loudest voice in the house, quietly training us to believe we don't have time for spiritual formation or real discipleship. We talk through how to disciple busy people without adding another exhausting program. Using Deuteronomy 6, we lay out a simple rhythm that fits normal life: sitting at home, walking along the way, lying down, and getting up. Table talk, morning prayers, bedtime moments, honest conversation. We also name a modern trap: getting "discipled" online. Sermons and clips can help, but they can't be your shepherd. Real discipleship needs someone who knows you well enough to challenge you and care for your soul. If you want a healthier, more Christlike life without pretending you're not busy, press play. Subscribe, share it with a friend who feels stretched thin, and leave a review with the one rhythm you're committing to this week. Send us Fan Mail
The Unhurried Leader
2026/08/19
Busyness can feel holy while quietly draining your soul, and most leaders don't notice the difference until they're empty. We sit in John 15 and talk about abiding in Christ as the starting place for healthy, fruitful, resilient leadership, the kind that stays connected to Jesus instead of performing for approval. Our guest is pastor, church planter, and coach Adam Boyes from Sydney, Australia. We unpack why fruitfulness is a byproduct and not the aim, how the Father's pruning leads to more life, and why pain is often a signal worth diagnosing before we numb it with a busy schedule. If you want unhurried leadership and formation that lasts, press play. Subscribe, share this with a leader you love, and leave a review with your biggest takeaway. Send us Fan Mail
Character Before The Platform
2026/08/12
The platform you want might be the very thing that exposes what you've been avoiding. We talk about character before the platform, because results can look amazing while the inner life quietly erodes. If God uses flawed people, what does that mean for leaders who are gifted, effective, and still unfinished? We open 1 Samuel 16:7 and track the gap between what people celebrate and what God sees. David doesn't start with a crown, he starts in a field. That hidden place of worship and surrender forms a heart that can carry influence with humility. Character isn't personality and it isn't perfection. It's the direction of your life, shaped as you abide in Christ (John 15) instead of leaning on talent and applause. Then we get personal: ego that grows with compliments, the mask of people pleasing, comparison that drains joy, and the numbness that hides behind "successful" ministry. We share honest next steps, from Romans 12:3 to praying Psalm 139 to letting trusted people tell you the truth. If the platform disappeared tomorrow, who would you be? Give God the Clipboard
2026/08/06
Growth sounds inspiring until it asks you to reflect, confess, and admit where you've been stuck. We open Season 6 by looking back at how this show grew from worship foundations into honest conversations about leadership, formation, and what actually changed in us. What Happens When You Outsource Your Soul
2026/06/18
Most leaders don't realize they're doing it. Slowly, quietly, you start handing off the things only God was meant to carry — your confidence, your direction, your sense of self. That's what it means to outsource your soul. In this episode, Elmer Cañas Jr. and Willie C. Simpson Jr. cover: Why worship leaders are still teachers, and why the songs you choose shape theologyThe MAP framework: Mandate, Assignment, and Purpose, and how leaders lose themselves chasing calling while abandoning purposeAI, bias, and spiritual dependency: when a tool starts doing the Holy Spirit's jobWhy isolation makes leaders weak and community makes them dangerous for the KingdomHow to grow on purpose and give the people you lead the healthiest version of yourselfYour private life with Jesus is your public ceiling. Worship With Eternity in View: What It Changes About How You Lead
2026/06/10
What does worship look like when eternity is your actual frame of reference? In episode 17 of Season 5 of The Worship and Leadership Podcast, Elmer Cañas Jr. and Willie C. Simpson Jr. go deep into Revelation 4 and 5, the Thessalonian letters, and the vision of the throne room to answer one question: how does eternal worship shape the way we lead on Sundays? They unpack: Throne-centered versus experience-centered worshipLamb-centered worship and why redemption fuels everythingThe difference between joy and happiness in a worship contextWhy reverence is almost countercultural right nowSunday as rehearsal for eternityThis is not abstract theology. It is leadership perspective that changes how you plan, how you lead, and how you show up every week. Subscribe for new episodes every week. You Can’t Schedule Revival (But You Can Be Ready for It)
2026/05/27
Revival is real, but it’s not something we build. In this episode, we explore what Scripture actually says about awakening and renewal through Nehemiah 8, Jonah and Nineveh, Ezekiel 18, and Revelation 2. We talk about leadership resistance, delayed obedience, and why personal surrender is often the unlocking factor for everything around us. The big idea: revival is a rhythm, repentance is a posture, and worship is the fruit. Send us Fan Mail
