Live from the TRPL #6: Built to Endure: Sustainability, Stewardship, and the Making of TRPL
2026/10/23
The TRPL was designed to last, but also to reflect Theodore Roosevelt's conservation legacy. In this panel discussion, the Library’s architects and builders discuss the sustainability commitments involved, and the local materials, important partnerships, challenges and innovative solutions that came up along the way.
Jenn Carroll, the Manager of Sustainability at the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library, speaks with these panelists:
Craig Dykers, Founding Partner, Snøhetta architectureSuzanne Medley, The Fisher GroupWillie Winn, Winn ConstructionThese ambitious and forward-thinking experts reveal the sustainability choices that showed up during construction, and the difficult work that allowed them to meet the certification standards of the Living Building Challenge.
Together, they tell a story about creating someplace extraordinary, and about building it with the land, not just on it. About constructing a site for generations of visitors, but also for the animals, grasses, and even the weather systems that already exist in the Badlands. And the details are as wild as the landscape!
This episode is part of a special 6-part series, recorded live from the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library during its Founding Benefactors Days, July 2-3, 2026, just ahead of the grand opening. Interviews, talks, and panel discussions explored the topics of leadership, conservation, civic life, and Theodore Roosevelt’s legacy today.

Live from the TRPL #5: TR’s Legacy in Government with Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Kevin Cramer
2026/10/16
What does President Theodore Roosevelt's example still offer public servants across the aisle? This bipartisan conversation, moderated by Rye Barcott, features Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Sen. Kevin Cramer discussing the role of government, the future of public lands, and the responsibilities of citizenship, which they find grounded in shared values rather than division.
Kevin Cramer serves as the junior United States senator for North Dakota and is a Republican. Kirsten Gillibrand serves as the junior United States senator for New York and is a Democrat.Rye Barcott is a Marine Corps veteran, author of Courage Can Save US, and co-founder and CEO of With Honor, a cross-partisan organization that fights polarization by supporting principled veteran leadership in public office. This episode is part of a special 6-part series, recorded live from the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library during its Founding Benefactors Days, July 2-3, 2026, just ahead of the grand opening. Live from the TRPL #4: The First Lady & the Modern Presidency: A Panel Hosted by Kjersti Armstrong
2026/10/09
The First Lady’s job description is famously… nonexistent. No handbook, no contract, no paycheck – just a front-row seat to power, a hugely public stage, and the constant pressure of getting it right, even when nobody can agree on what “right” looks like.
North Dakota First Lady Kjersti Armstrong leads this panel discussion, digging into how the role actually works: not through formal authority, but through presence, relationships, timing, and a lot of judgment calls. She speaks with these extraordinary panelists:
Betsy Fischer Martin, an Emmy-winning journalist and the Director of the Institute of Politics at Harvard Kennedy School. Anita McBride, director of the First Ladies Initiative at American University, and the former Chief of Staff to First Lady Laura Bush. Michelle Orton, director and Johnson Endowed Chair of the Theodore Roosevelt Honors Leadership Program (TRHLP) at Dickinson State University in North Dakota. They begin, fittingly, with Edith Roosevelt, who helped formalize the role of First Lady through White House restoration, social leadership, diplomatic hosting, and her position as advisor and anchor to President Theodore Roosevelt. The discussion then turns to how First Ladies have influenced public life and advocacy, while, of course, not leaving out the realities of being watched and judged at every turn.
These panelists bring White House experience, presidential history expertise, and leadership research to a question that isn’t only about the role but about agency and power: what does it take to lead when your influence is complicated, your visibility is relentless, and what you contribute is often both essential and forgotten?

Live from the TRPL #3: Arthur Brooks and Robbie Lauf on The Strenuous Life and the Search for Happiness
2026/10/02
How did a man who fled New York City find himself in the Badlands? And what does it actually take to do it yourself? Happiness scientist and bestselling author Dr. Arthur C. Brooks walks us through 3 important lessons in finding happiness, each drawn from Theodore Roosevelt’s life. He makes the case that TR had the science of a good life figured out a century before Harvard researchers did. And he brings the same wit and energy to this stage that’s made him one of the most sought-after speakers on happiness in the country.
Robbie Lauf, executive director of the TRPL, also joins him, and the conversation opens up into faith, genetics, ambition, and what it means not just to be happy but to be fully alive.
Arthur Brooks is one of the world’s leading experts on the science of human happiness, appearing in the media and traveling the world to teach people in private companies, universities, public agencies, and faith communities how they can live happier lives and bring greater well-being to others. Brooks is a professor at Vanderbilt University and a senior fellow at the Harvard Business School. He is a CBS News contributor, columnist with The Free Press, and host of the weekly podcast “Office Hours with Arthur Brooks.”

Bob Crawford on America’s Greatest Ex-President: John Quincy Adams
2026/07/31
Why do so few Americans remember John Quincy Adams? Bob Crawford, bassist for The Avett Brothers and author of America's Founding Son, argues Adams may not have been America's best president, but he just might have been the greatest ex-president. He describes the election of 1824, with its accusations of corruption bringing rise to a populist leader. And he lays out how Adams' real story began after the White House, when the former president did the unthinkable: he ran for Congress. It was there that this relentless public servant truly shone, fighting for free speech and striking the first major blow against slavery.

A Call to Adventure: Charlie Melcher, Ed O’Keefe and the Brand New Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library
2026/07/02
Ted comes to this conversation not just as a host, but as a Roosevelt. And he’s sitting down with two people he’s worked alongside for years: Edward O’Keefe, CEO of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library, and Charlie Melcher, CEO of the Future of Storytelling, as they reflect on what they’ve built together.
The Library opens its doors on July 4th, 2026, the nation’s 250th birthday, and these two men are most responsible for bringing it to life. Together they trace the arc from vision to reality, including the moment on a snowy Badlands butte when everything clicked. This conversation includes a candid look at how far they’ve come and a preview of what awaits visitors. At the heart of it all is a radical proposition: that TR’s story exists not to glorify one man, but to ignite something in the rest of us.

Lucas St. Clair: Honey, Humility, and the Making of a National Monument
2026/06/19
Lucas St. Clair grew up off the grid in the woods of northern Maine, with a front-row seat to one of the great entrepreneurial origin stories of our time: his mother’s chance encounter with the beekeeper Burt Shavitz, which grew into Burt’s Bees. With his good friend Ted, Lucas traces that story of selling honey out of pickle jars to building a multi-million dollar company, and his mom’s vision to donate tens of thousands of acres of Maine timberland to create a national park. What followed for Lucas was years of backlash, door-to-door discussions, and a humbling reckoning with the Wabanaki Nations, whose history had long been left out of the story of this land.

Admiral Stavridis on NATO and the World of 2084: The Future is a Warning
2026/06/05
Admiral James Stavridis is a retired four-star U.S. Navy admiral and prolific nonfiction author, but it's his newest work of fiction that cuts the deepest. 2084, co-written with former Marine Elliot Ackerman, imagines a world ravaged by climate change and torn apart by a global war orchestrated by A.I. Yet beneath the chaos are difficult human choices and the kinds of love and loss that remind us what's ultimately at stake. It serves as a warning designed to spur action.
But Ted can't stay in the future for too long, not with the former Supreme Allied Commander of NATO sitting across from him. Their conversation moves between reality and story, from NATO’s global composition and the international order today to that world of 2084. Without giving too much away, the Admiral describes a future that feels distant enough to be fiction but close enough to be uncomfortable.

Dana Milbank: Retreat, Restore, Rehumanize
2026/05/22
Dana Milbank traded the outrage cycle of politics for 60 acres of overgrown Virginia farmland. And as he changed the land, the land changed him. Dana is a political columnist for NOTUS (soon to be “The Star”). He spent 26 years as an op-ed columnist for The Washington Post, where he also wrote about our attempts to "rehumanize" during a time of anxiety and isolation.
He describes to Ted his unlikely journey from suburban kid and political columnist to hunter and land steward, and how even brief moments outdoors can give back what screens have stripped away. Dana makes the case that spending time in nature and with our neighbors, like restoring degraded land, is sometimes unglamorous, Sisyphean work that just so happens to be essential.

Senator Mitt Romney on Formative Moments, Presidential Leadership, and the Question of Legacy
2026/05/08
What allows a politician to hold to his principles when almost every incentive pulls the other way? In this memorable conversation with Ted, Senator Mitt Romney traces the formative moments with his father that shaped his moral compass, and the specific ways he guards against self-rationalization. Senator Romney also speaks to the outsized power of presidential leadership, and why his legacy won’t rest on any single vote he cast. Plus, he offers a surprisingly simple framework for rediscovering the values most Americans already share.

Dr. Vivek Murthy on Loneliness, Staying Human, and What True Success Looks Like
2026/04/24
What if we prioritized relationships over the chase for success? What if we ignored the siren call of social media in exchange for cultivating a sense of purpose? Dr. Vivek Murthy, the 19th and 21st Surgeon General of the United States, has made it his mission to sound the alarm on one of the defining public health crises of our time: loneliness. In his conversation with Ted, Murthy makes the case for a fundamental reordering of what we value, describing a "triad of fulfillment" that's the path to real flourishing. He also reveals his next chapter: a new podcast called Staying Human.

Sarabeth Berman on What Dies When Local News Does: The Crisis Nobody's Covering
2026/04/10
What's really at stake when a community loses its local newspaper? Civic engagement drops, polarization rises, and corruption goes unchecked. But Sarabeth Berman, CEO of the American Journalism Project, is working to reverse that. Sarabeth believes local journalism should be treated like an essential public good, similar to a museum or a food bank. And with the AJP, the first venture philanthropy dedicated to local news, news organizations are rooted in and supported by the communities they serve. In this conversation, she and Ted dig into the research, the AJP model, and what it will actually take to rebuild local news across the entire country.

Adam Met: Climate Action, Musical Stardom, and the Art of Building a Movement
2026/03/27
Adam Met is a musician, climate policy writer, and genuine problem-solver – not your typical celebrity activist. This bass guitarist spent years building a devoted fanbase for his multi-platinum indie-pop band AJR. Now, as co-author of the movement-building manifesto Amplify, he outlines how those same tools can power lasting social change. Adam joins Ted to discuss what a four-hour conversation with Glenn Beck taught him, why he let the fans assemble an AJR album, and how he shepherded the bipartisan Co-Location Energy Act into both chambers of Congress.
