This final episode of the season features an interview with legendary underground horror filmmaker, Brian Paulin! Brian's been churning out some of the most fantastical and imaginative flicks since the early 90's and now thanks to Saturn's Core re-issuing of "At Dawn They Sleep" and "Bone Sickness" he's found a new wave of fans to dive into his FX-driven madness! We talk about his upcoming film, "Abysmal Purgatory", that's been 5 years in the making, as well as all the things that make him a true artist full of integrity and passion. Whether it's his undying love for black metal or his ability to sculpt the wildest experiences with barely a script by his side, Brian is a fascinating person to chat with and an all around great guy. Stoked to end the season on such a strong note! This episode features an interview with filmmaker, Steven Adam Renkovish. Adam's been churning out regional DIY horror films that feel as cerebral as they are evocative over the past decade. With his latest short, The Strange Disappearance of Emily Jayne, he's now leaned into something more autumnal, nostalgic and queer, as he's recently come out as gay and found empowerment in creating a spooky Halloween tale for his inner child. We go over his other heavy and surreal horror films, while also touching on his personal struggles with faith, his strength to come out of the closet while living in the Bible Belt, and how all of that feeds into his need for community where the cinema is his true church. We had such a wonderful chat and I want to thank Adam for being so vulnerable and honest. So stoked for what he does next! This episode features an interview with BC-based filmmaker, Joshua Gratton. His new film, Platypus, is a hazy lo-fi slasher that is as gorgeous as it is esoteric, a bonafide 'murderdrone' masterpiece that just had its premiere at Fantastic Fest. What is murderdrone? Well, you've got to dive in to find out! This episode is for the real slasher aficionados, as we touch on some of the most obscure titles that inspired Platypus and how Gratton achieved that *authenticity* that screams "2am viewing of a 1981 slasher flick". WARNING: This video contains discussions of controversial and sensitive subjects in film and art. Please proceed with caution. This episode features an interview with Matt & Jon from the Sick on Cinema podcast. As two legendary podcasters going on almost 10 years of broadcasting their explorations of messed up cinema, I had a lot to ask them and a lot of wisdom to pull out of their oozing heads. We covered so many topics, like the importance of community, the need to lift up the underground, what kinda movies make us cry, and what kinda movies go way too far... for us at least. It was a blast chatting with these two gents and I can only hope that we'll continue to collaborate for many years to come (although I'll probably retire SYH long before they ever close up shop). This episode features an interview with Costa Dillon, one of the creators of the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes franchise. Costa has co-written every entry all the way up to this brand new sequel, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence. So with more than 50 years creating absurd parodies of creature features, we got to talking about classic cinema, media literacy, the evolution of FX, and so much more. I kept trying to coax a political rant out of him but he insisted the only enemy we have to look out for is the tomatoes! This was quite a delightful surprise. The 5th entry is currently playing limited theatres before hitting VOD by the end of September. This episode features an interview with legendary underground filmmaker, Joe Meredith. Joe has been sculpting out a fantastical filmography the past decade with his films like Variant 1 & 2, Ataraxia, Teratomorph, and most recently -- Harvest Brood. We dive into his processes, his inspirations, and how Harvest Brood differs from his more supernatural-drenched sci-fi mind-melters of the past. Joe is quite the elusive artist, full of talent and mystery, as this is one of his only podcast appearances he's done thus far. Hopefully not his last because his output has been too incredible for him to hide in the shadows. This episode features an interview with Steven Reifsteck, head honcho of Janice.Click and filmmaker of some of the wildest SOV comedies I've ever seen. Sliding through absurd humour, fantastical horror, and a healthy dose of WTFery, you never quite know what will get thrown at your skull like a melted frisbee. His most recent film, I Was A Teenage Gargoyle, takes the horror antics a step further, while his upcoming feature, Joshua, seems to be the magnum opus of this wily collective. We delve deep into his processes and while there are plenty of laughs, there's also some very candid moments where we connected through grieving recent losses and the increasing crisis of unhoused people. It's a sprawling chat with a really great dude. This episode contains an interview with horror filmmaker Carrsan T. Morrissey. Based out of Iowa with her own unique approach, half-informed by Gaspar Noé, the other from classic cosmic horror a la Lovecraft. The melding of the old and the new are just one of many assets in Carrsan's artillery, as can be seen in her recent shorts, Bleeders, Of the Flesh, and Conqueror Worm, as well as her debut feature, The Salvages. We had a fascinating chat about living in Ohio, making art, and what she's got cooking up for us next. I would pre-order your tickets now, as this is only the beginning for this massively talented director. Warning: This interview contains discussions about suicide, graphic violence, and other potentially triggering and upsetting content. This episode features an interview with indie horror filmmaker, Robbie Smith. Robbie's most recent offering, I Don't Like It Here, dropped exclusively on Screambox just a few weeks ago and also dropped on my head like an anvil coated in nightmare fuel. The way it switches up the form from mumblegore drama to true crime mock doc then rams it full of hellish imagery is a sight to behold, to say the least. We dive into Robbie's inspirations and aspirations, then eventually dive into our own shared traumas and vulnerable past experiences. This episode really runs the gamut of emotions and showcases just how fascinating Robbie is as an artist and a human being. Warning: This episode features discussions about abuse and may be triggering to some. Discretion is advised. This episode I've got Australian filmmaker Lachlan Saille on to chat about his latest film, Albatross. While he might be on horror-heads radar for his restoration work, including New Wave Video's release of the lost 8mm Japanese horror flick, Nighty Night, his own films are a different beast altogether. Albatross is a very heavy drama about child abuse that focuses on these two lovers exploring their own complex traumas. It's one of the most unique films I've ever seen, applying a Bergman-esque poetic touch to very prickly subject matter. Lachlan is a fascinating artist who tied these themes to not just his creative pursuits but also his political ones. Unfortunately the recording was met with a handful of tech issues so not all of our discussions made it to the final episode but what remains is a compelling conversation that will surely split your head. https://www.youtube.com/@UCI2P99r0JtU2aBhG3IDSvgw https://letterboxd.com/renkls/ https://www.instagram.com/mollykerractor/ https://www.instagram.com/liv_phoenix_ https://www.youtube.com/@UCPsShsdra74P5YqtTsWRLdQ https://www.instagram.com/richard.uffy/ https://www.instagram.com/jakeisard_sound Spilt Your Head is proud to be a part of the Someone's Favorite Productions Podcast Network. This episode features an interview with filmmaker Schnüdlbug aka Chris, who dropped one helluva immersive/incredible animated sci-fi film called "Roach" that I'm still shaking off the reverberations from. Chris and I get into the tapestries of influences that make up this whimsical-yet-unsettling adventure, hopping from "Starship Troopers" to Michael Snow to the doom band OM like they were lily pads in the pond of sensory overload cinema. Loved the movie and loved chatting with this unique and inspiring artist! This episode features an interview with Ben DePaoli, the owner and operator of Iron Fortress Records, as well as Death Relic Merch. Iron Fortress has quickly become one of the most reliable and fresh death metal labels to pop up in the underground. We cover the origins of Iron Fortress, our shared love for metalcore, the current state of death metal, what's on the horizon for the label, his bootleg horror t-shirt label Death Relic Merch, and reminisce a bit about the old VHS rental days. Ben is one hell of an ambitious guy who puts 110% of his creativity and conviction into this killer label. Great chat, great guy! This episode features an interview with filmmakers Hazel M. & Mae M., whose directorial debut feature, Divine Hammer, is one of the most original and audacious horror-comedies I've ever seen. A mumble-gore buddy-comedy about two friends bonding while trying to make a snuff film? It's about as bizarre and awe-inducing as you'd hope and these two filmmakers demonstrate exactly why with their infectious wit and wild ideas. Absolutely adored our chat and hope that you do too. New episode is up and this time I've got Amber T and Naomi Monaghan on to talk about Pink Films! Amber T is a writer and news editor for Fangoria Magazine and Naomi has recently launched an exciting webzine called "Asian Cinema Shine", as well as the PinkCat Podcast (that covers Pink & CAT III films). They've both contributed essays to a number of recent and upcoming Japanese bluray releases, so naturally I had to have them on to discuss this ultra-provocative Asian subgenre. We specifically tackle Genji Nakamura's 1983 gay satire of Yukio Mishima's life called Beautiful Mystery, as well as Minoru Kunizawa's 2002 gay horror/romance, Two Lovers. Expect also a healthy dose of J-Horror history. This episode features an interview with John Mathews & Maiko Takeda, the owners of New Wave Video, an Asian-focused boutique blu-ray label that's been releasing some of the wildest titles that the underground has long been rallying for. This Australian/Japanese couple gets into the nitty gritty of acquiring these titles, while dropping very subtle hints about what's to come and what it takes to charm the likes of Nikkatsu. It was a fun and revealing chat, one that got me salivating over what they've got in store for us fans of weird Asian cinema!
