However, their attempt to take Ai fails because of Achan’s sin, which brings judgment on the people until he is punished. With God’s guidance restored, Joshua leads a successful ambush against Ai, destroying the city and renewing the covenant by reading the law to all Israel. Soon after, neighboring kings unite against Israel, but the Gibeonites cleverly secure a peace treaty through deception, which Joshua honors despite their trickery. The people are given clear boundaries in which to divide the land they are to live in.
