Description

Welcome to the Fat Loss School podcast! If you’ve been struggling with extra pounds, menopausal belly fat, feeling overwhelmed by too many diet options, are on the borderline with health issues, and are frustrated by past weight loss failures - especially if you’ve hit the fabulous fifty mark - then grab a seat because this podcast is your ultimate fat loss classroom. I am Amy Bryan, 30 year educator and certified FASTer Way to Fat Loss® online nutrition and fitness coach. I’ll be your teacher and guide to show you that losing fat and gaining energy - plus maintaining it long term - is truly possible even at our age. I know because I’ve been there. In my 30s & 40s, I did all the diets, tried all the gimmicks, over-exercised, lost and gained the same pounds over & over. At 50, I had accomplished so much except in this one very important area and was through wasting time and energy on temporary fixes! This podcast will teach lifestyle changes that shed the fat in a healthy way that you can sustain long term and change your health trajectory so you age with energy, independence, and confidence. Think of these few minutes together as a study hall with cheat sheets for fat loss and include topics like intermittent fasting, carb cycling, mindset reframing, and more. Grab your notebook, because class is officially in session, and it’s time to rewrite your wellness story! Connect with me at https://linktr.ee/amybryanfasterway

248. Lies I Taught In Medical School: What Dr. Robert Lufkin Says Women Over 50 Should Know About Metabolic Health
2026/10/23
What if some of what we've been taught about weight loss, nutrition, chronic disease, and healthy aging is incomplete? In this Friday Extra Credit episode of FAT LOSS SCHOOL, Amy Bryan shares her CliffsNotes-style book report on Lies I Taught in Medical School by physician and medical professor Dr. Robert Lufkin. Lufkin challenges several conventional ideas about obesity and chronic disease and makes the case that metabolic health and insulin resistance deserve much more attention. Amy shares the biggest lessons she took from the book—including why “eat less and exercise more” doesn't tell the whole story, why strength training and maintaining muscle after 50 matter, and why our daily choices should be about far more than losing weight. You'll also hear about the important difference between lifespan and healthspan and why habits such as eating nutritious whole foods, prioritizing protein, strength training, walking and aerobic exercise, sleeping well, managing stress, and being intentional about when we eat can support our health as we age. The goal isn't simply to become smaller after menopause. It's to become stronger, healthier, more metabolically resilient, and better equipped to enjoy the decades ahead. 🎓 Your Friday Extra Credit homework: Ask yourself, “What am I doing today for my future healthspan?”  JOIN US in my free FAT LOSS SCHOOL Facebook Community here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/fasterwaywithamybryan  JOIN US in my fabulous-over-fifty VIP Membership group here (discount code VIP2026): https://www.fasterway.com?aid=AMYBRYAN  EMAIL Amy Bryan here:  [email protected] ORDER today's book here:  https://link.amazon/B0aadRcLa

2026/10/19
Could hidden sugars be sabotaging your fat loss, energy, and metabolic health after 50?  In this episode of FAT LOSS SCHOOL, we're uncovering the connection between added sugar, insulin resistance, menopause belly fat, blood sugar, and chronic disease risk. You'll learn how excess added sugar can contribute to unhealthy eating patterns and metabolic problems, why insulin resistance matters for women over 50, and how to read nutrition labels to uncover hidden sugars. Plus, I'm sharing a simple 5-day sugar-reduction framework you can use anytime to become more intentional about your nutrition, reduce your reliance on sugary foods, and build healthier habits. We're also clearing up some sugar myths! Whole fruit isn't the enemy, insulin isn't a villain, and a sugar detox doesn't mean starving yourself or eliminating all carbohydrates. 🎃 JOIN OUR 5-DAY SUGAR DETOX: OCTOBER 26–30! 246. Eat Healthy on a Budget: 10 Money-Saving Tips for Women Over 50
2026/10/16
Can you eat healthy, prioritize protein, and work toward your fat-loss goals without spending a fortune at the grocery store? Absolutely! In this Friday Extra Credit episode of FAT LOSS SCHOOL, Amy shares practical ways to eat healthy on a budget, save money on groceries, reduce food waste, and make nutritious eating more affordable—especially for women over 50 working toward better health, fat loss, and muscle maintenance. You don't need expensive “health foods,” specialty grocery stores, or a refrigerator full of complicated meal-prep containers to eat well. Sometimes the simplest foods—and the simplest meals—are the best place to start. In this quick lesson, you'll learn how to: 🛒 Build simple, budget-friendly meals around protein, produce, healthy carbohydrates, and fats 💰 Compare store brands and use unit pricing to find the best grocery deals 🥦 Save money with frozen and canned fruits and vegetables 🥩 Buy protein and other staples in bulk—when it's actually cheaper 📱 Use curbside grocery pickup to reduce impulse purchases and track spending 🧊 Freeze foods before they spoil and reduce food waste 🍗 Repurpose leftovers into easy, high-protein meals 🥗 Decide when convenience foods may actually save you money 🏠 “Shop” your refrigerator, freezer, and pantry before heading to the grocery store 🥣 Avoid spending extra money on trendy foods just because they're marketed as “healthy” If you're a woman over 50 who wants to lose fat, build or maintain muscle, eat more protein, improve your nutrition, and create healthy habits that work in real life, this episode will help you make your grocery budget work harder for you. 245. Fat Loss After 50: Your Road Map From Menopause Belly Fat to a Strong, Healthy Lifestyle
2026/10/12
If you're a woman over 50 frustrated by menopause belly fat, weight gain, a changing metabolism, or the feeling that “eat less and exercise more” just isn't working anymore, consider this episode your field trip to a different way of thinking. In this episode of FAT LOSS SCHOOL, Amy Bryan takes you on a road trip from frustrated and confused to creating a sustainable healthy lifestyle after 50—using the lessons that completely changed her own approach to nutrition, exercise and aging. Despite having three college degrees and eventually holding the top job in a school system, Amy admits she knew almost nothing about nutrition. She thought eating fat made you fat, didn't understand carbohydrates, wasn't prioritizing protein, and believed fasting was simply a way to eat fewer calories. And after more than 20 years as a runner, she thought better results required running longer, farther and faster—yet she weighed more at her third half marathon than her first and eventually found herself dealing with pain and injury. The education that followed changed the road she was traveling. You'll learn why sustainable fat loss after 50 involves much more than cutting calories and adding cardio, including the roles of protein, macros, intermittent fasting, carb cycling, strength training, HIIT, walking, sleep, recovery and mindset. Amy also explains why transformation after menopause shouldn't be measured only by pounds on a scale. Progress may also look like inches lost, more muscle and strength, better energy and sleep, improved mobility and stamina, changing cravings, greater nutrition knowledge, more confidence, and a healthier relationship with food and exercise. And most importantly, you'll see the ultimate destination: Not another diet you eventually quit—but a healthy lifestyle that becomes simply how you live. 🎓 YOUR NEXT STOP: Continue learning with FAT LOSS SCHOOL podcast, join Amy's free Facebook community or enroll in her VIP Membership if you're ready for ongoing workouts, nutrition strategies, coaching, accountability and a community of fabulous-over-fifty women. You don't need to punish your body into becoming smaller. You can learn how to fuel it, strengthen it and take care of it for the life you still have ahead of you. ❤️ Join Amy's fabulous-over-fifty membership group here: https://www.fasterway.com?aid=AMYBRYAN  Email Amy here:  [email protected]

243. The Weekly Reset for Women Over 50: Make Healthy Eating and Exercise Easier
2026/10/05
What if staying consistent with healthy eating and exercise isn't a willpower problem—but a systems problem? In this episode of FAT LOSS SCHOOL, Amy shares a simple Weekly Reset for women over 50 designed to make nutrition, strength training, meal planning, movement, and healthy habits easier to fit into real life. And no—you do NOT need to spend your entire Sunday meal prepping! A successful weekend or weekly reset isn't about creating the perfect schedule. It's about reducing decision fatigue and making healthy choices easier before the busy week begins. You'll learn how to: 🗓️ Look at your real-life calendar before planning meals and workouts 💪 Schedule strength training with a backup plan 🥩 Create a simple weekly protein plan 🥗 Prep flexible ingredients instead of seven days of rigid meals 🚨 Keep quick “emergency meals” available for crazy days 🛒 Review and restock the foods that support your goals 👟 Set up your environment to make exercise and movement easier 🧠 Reduce decision fatigue instead of relying on willpower ⏱️ Create a 15-, 30-, or 60-minute reset based on the time you actually have ❤️ Stop putting everyone else on the calendar while leaving yourself off Amy also shares some of the quirky systems she's used for years—including Water, Waste & Wash Wednesday and her daily TO DO and TA DA lists—and explains why simple routines can make consistency easier. Your reset doesn't even have to happen on the weekend. The goal is to create a rhythm that fits your work, family, travel, grandchildren, appointments, and real life. Because sustainable fat loss after 50 isn't about becoming better at starting over every Monday. It's about creating systems that help you keep going. 240. Break Up with the Scale: Why Fat Loss Matters More Than Weight Loss After 50
2026/09/25
Is the scale helping you measure progress—or stealing your joy? In this short Friday Extra Credit episode of FAT LOSS SCHOOL, Amy explains why weight loss and fat loss are NOT the same thing, especially for women over 50. The number on the scale includes much more than body fat, and normal changes in water, glycogen, digestion, food intake, workouts and other factors can cause daily weight fluctuations. Meanwhile, a woman can lose fat, gain muscle, become smaller and stronger—and weigh exactly the same. You'll learn why body composition matters, why two women at the same weight can look completely different, and better ways to measure fat-loss progress, including waist measurements, clothing fit, progress photos, strength, energy, daily function and long-term weight trends. Plus, Amy challenges us to consider something even bigger: Has losing weight taken up too much space in your identity and your life? The scale is information. It isn't your grade—and it certainly isn't your worth. 239. Can You Build Muscle After 50 At Home? What Women Need to Know About Strength Training
2026/09/21
Do you really need a gym to build muscle after 50? Absolutely not! In this episode of FAT LOSS SCHOOL, Amy shares how she started strength training at home at age 51 with just 5- and 10-pound dumbbells—and how nine years of consistency and progressive strength training have completely changed what her home workouts (and her strength!) look like today. If you're a woman over 50 who wants to build muscle, lose fat, improve body composition, and stay strong as you age, this episode will help simplify strength training. We’re covering: 💪 What actually makes muscle grow 🏠 Why you can build muscle effectively at home 🏋️‍♀️ The basic equipment you really need 📈 Progressive overload—and why it matters 🔥 How to know when your weights are too light ⏱️ Why effective strength workouts don't have to take hours 🥩 How protein, carbohydrates and adequate nutrition support muscle 😴 Why sleep and recovery are part of your strength-training plan 🚫 Common at-home workout mistakes that can stall your progress 🎯 Why random workouts aren't the same as progressive training Amy also shares how the FASTer Way takes the guesswork out of strength training with programmed 30-minute workouts, multiple fitness levels and modifications, strategic nutrition, coaching, and a flexible weekly schedule that works in real life. Because after 50, we're not exercising simply to burn more calories. We're building muscle for the life we still want to LIVE. 🎓 Grab your dumbbells and a free FASTer Way workout here: https://www.fasterwaycoach.com/workout-free?aid=AMYBRYAN  🎯Join me in the FASTer Way foundational 6-week class here: https://www.fasterway.com/pages/6-week?aid=AMYBRYAN 🌟 Move directly into Amy's fabulous-over-fifty VIP membership program here:  https://www.fasterway.com?aid=AMYBRYAN  All of Amy's contact information and more is here:  www.linktr.ee/amybryanfasterway
238. How to Handle Everyone's Unsolicited Diet Advice & Stay on Track
2026/09/18
“Are you sure you should be eating that?” If you've ever changed your nutrition only to discover that suddenly EVERYONE has an opinion about what's on your plate, this Friday Extra Credit episode of FAT LOSS SCHOOL is for you! Maybe a family member questions your carbs, a coworker raises an eyebrow at your lunch, or a well-meaning friend wants to tell you about the diet THEY think you should be following. Even comments like, “But you don't need to diet!” can leave you questioning yourself. In this quick lesson, we're talking about how to handle unsolicited diet and nutrition advice without letting other people's opinions derail your healthy habits or fat-loss progress. You'll learn how to: Stop feeling like you have to defend or explain what's on your plate. Separate someone's intentions from the actual advice they're giving you. Prepare a few simple responses for uncomfortable food conversations. Trust the nutrition approach that's working for YOU. Stay confident when friends or family follow very different diets. Recognize when someone's comments may be more about their own food beliefs than yours. Lean on a coach and supportive community instead of trying to navigate your health journey alone. Especially for women over 50, sustainable nutrition isn't about eating as little as possible or following every new diet trend. It's about fueling your body, preserving muscle, getting stronger, supporting your health, and creating habits you can actually maintain. And having the right people in your corner makes that so much easier. If you're ready to learn the foundational strategies, join my 6-week FASTer Way class for women 50+. 237. Fall Bucket List: Fun Ways to Eat Better, Move More, and Feel Your Best After 50
2026/09/14
What if getting healthier this fall felt more like a bucket list than a to-do list? In this episode of FAT LOSS SCHOOL, we’re making healthy living FUN with a Fabulous-Over-Fifty Fall Bucket List packed with ways to move more, enjoy seasonal whole foods, reduce stress, prioritize sleep, and make some wonderful memories along the way. Let's get excited about FALL and all the healthy opportunities that come with it. 🍎 MOVE MORE & ENJOY FALL Add some fun seasonal movement to your calendar: Go apple picking. Visit a pumpkin patch. Get lost in a corn maze. Attend a fall festival, community fair, or county fair. Hike a trail to see the changing leaves. Take a fall foliage walk through your neighborhood. Go to a high school or college football game—and park farther away! Take the grandkids to the park and PLAY. Rake leaves—and maybe jump in the pile. Meet a friend for a walking date. Explore a new town on foot. Go antiquing or visit an outdoor market. Plan a fall adventure day somewhere you've never been. 🎃 EAT THE SEASON Fall is loaded with delicious whole foods. Put some of these on your healthy fall food bucket list: Try several varieties of fresh apples. Add pumpkin to oatmeal, smoothies, yogurt, or protein muffins. Make a big pot of turkey chili, chicken soup, or white chicken chili. Try winter squash such as butternut, acorn, spaghetti, or delicata. Roast Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, and carrots. Bake or air-fry sweet potatoes. Enjoy pears, cranberries, pomegranates, or figs. Use fall spices like cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves. Visit a farmers market and choose one fruit or vegetable you've never tried. Make a warm harvest salad and add plenty of protein. Create a sheet-pan dinner with seasonal vegetables. Find three new healthy fall recipes you're genuinely excited to eat. 🍂 PROTECT YOUR PEACE Healthy living after 50 isn't only about food and exercise. Make room for the things that help lower stress and make life feel good: Sit outside with your morning coffee—without your phone. Read a book on the porch. Light a candle and enjoy a quiet evening. Listen to music while you cook. Gather around a firepit with friends or family. Take a scenic drive. Turn off the news for an evening. Take a Sunday afternoon nature walk. Plan a fall picnic. Call someone you love while you walk. Spend intentional time with family and friends. Go somewhere beautiful and simply be present instead of documenting it. Make one fall memory that can't possibly be measured on a scale. 😴 MAKE SLEEP PART OF THE BUCKET LIST Fall is also a great time to create a cozy evening routine that supports better sleep and recovery: Try going to bed 30 minutes earlier for a week. Put your phone away earlier in the evening. Keep your bedroom cool and dark. Take a warm shower or bath before bed. Enjoy a cup of herbal tea. Read instead of scrolling. Build some quiet time into your evening. Give yourself permission to REST. The big lesson? Healthy living isn't just about what we give up. It's about everything our health allows us to DO. We want strong legs to walk through the apple orchard, strong arms to carry the pumpkins, energy to play with our grandchildren, and healthy bodies that allow us to travel, explore, laugh, love, and make memories for many falls to come. Your homework: Choose at least THREE things from this Healthy Fall Bucket List and put them on your calendar. Let's make this a season of whole foods, movement, strength, better sleep, less stress, good health, and a whole lot of FUN. 2026/09/11
How do you know when it’s time to change your macros? In this Friday Extra Credit mini-lesson from FAT LOSS SCHOOL, we’re talking about when your protein, carbs, fats, and overall calorie targets may need an adjustment—and when you should leave them alone! If your progress has stalled, your body has changed, or you’ve been following the same macro targets for a while, this quick episode will help you understand when a macro recalculation might support your fat loss, muscle-building, and metabolism goals—especially for women over 50.   Join me in my next FASTer Way to Fat Loss class for women 50+ here:  https://www.fasterway.com/pages/6-week?aid=AMYBRYAN Grab our FASTer Way Macro Cheat Sheet here: https://www.fasterwaycoach.com/guides/free-macro-cheat-sheet#AMYBRYAN
235. Macros Part 2: How Carb Cycling Can Help You Lose Fat After 50
2026/09/07
Can you eat carbs and still lose fat after 50? Absolutely—and learning when and how to eat carbohydrates may be more useful than simply trying to eliminate them. In this episode of FAT LOSS SCHOOL, we’re going back to class for a lesson on carb cycling for women over 50. I’m breaking down what carb cycling is, why we strategically alternate lower-carb and regular-carb days, and how this nutrition strategy can fit into a healthy approach to fat loss, metabolic health, insulin sensitivity, and body composition during menopause and beyond. We’ll also talk about why carbohydrates aren’t the enemy, the importance of pairing your nutrition with strength training, and why preserving and building muscle becomes increasingly important as we age. You’ll learn how protein, carbs, healthy fats, macros, exercise, and recovery can work together instead of relying on another restrictive low-calorie or low-carb diet. If you’re a woman in your 50s, 60s, or beyond who is frustrated with menopause weight gain, stubborn belly fat, changing metabolism, insulin resistance, or diets that no longer seem to work, this episode will help you better understand the role carbohydrates can play in your healthy lifestyle. It’s time to stop fearing carbs and start learning how to use them strategically. Grab your notebook—Carb Cycling 101 is officially in session!
