The Map of Freedom is a diagram of the steps and the process through which we can gain when we reclaim our makeup as God predesigned us.
The steps and growth set us free to give our gifts, trust outcomes to God, walk in integrity, and lead well. (See The Map of Freedom in Free Resources)
The process of growth can overcome toxic shame, false rules, imposed roles, and survival scripts that block a person from being and doing who and what God designed them to be and do.
Arriving at the “places” that “The Map” guides a person toward, takes a person from hearing about something to experiencing something. It is the difference between hearing about the giant Sequoia trees and the experience of standing beneath one.
As stated in the last show notes, the journey:
requires many switchbacks
is often slow
takes a lifetime
Unless something is terribly impaired about us, we all hope to be able to be productive in life and live fully until we die. We all wish to have an impact for good.
We live fully with impact by being able to:
give
trust God with the outcomes
have integrity
lead well
The result is freedom.
But this freedom isn’t free. We must walk, work, and persevere with an image in mind and the heart involved to pull us forward every day.
The need for expression
Human beings are created to be expressive creatures. We are created to use our minds to articulate and communicate what occurs in our hearts.
Expression communicates the need for connection, along with the boundaries that make us safe to trust connection.

The need for expression
Human beings are created to be expressive creatures, created to use our minds to articulate and communicate what occurs our hearts.
Expression communicates the need for connection along with the boundaries that make us safe to trust connection.
Suppression of expression creates depression of the heart, which works against the nature of how we are created. Suppression is the use of the will, complicated by denial and dissociation, to “protect” one’s self.

The process of growth can overcome toxic shame, false rules, imposed roles, and survival scripts that block a person from being and doing who and what God designed them to be and do.
The Map of Freedom is not so much about learning something as returning to something. We return to how we are made, then we learn to use what we have “rediscovered.”
We return to stewarding how God made us before we steward what God has given us the opportunity to do.
What is the benefit or payoff?
By returning to our origins:
We remember what it is like to hope and believe how “things in life could be,” instead of always focusing on what “things have turned into.”
We are defeated less and risk more.
We can picture how the world is meant to be and work towards that.
We truly see the “glass as half full,” while dealing in the reality that we do indeed live in a broken place where “hearts break and people die.”
The result is that the reawakened heart brings light to dark places with faith; creative solutions to destructive problems with hope; wisdom to struggles that seem unfathomable; and courage to places of danger.
A child grows into the man or woman that God designed instead of what the world molded them into.
The fourth movement of The Map of Freedom is “Feel Your Feelings.
The first three movements lead to a person into “re-trusting” how God created them and moves him/her to offer or “give” to others they need and others who need you. And “give you” to God, who created you.

The third movement of the Map of Freedom is “Give You”
To “give you” follows by its very nature and order what occurs when a person returns to how God created us to live fully, love deeply, and lead well by doing so in relationship with our own hearts, the hearts of others, and the heart of God.

The beginning steps of “get you” and “be you”
Get you: Recognize, reclaim, and learn the makeup and purpose of being a feeling, needing, desiring, longing, and hoping creature, who is created to find fullness of life in relationship. Relational connection that affirms and confirms one’s makeup supports a sense of belonging and mattering in a person.

Purpose of Therapy
Therapy is about healing; restoration; and returning to normal interaction in a society that finds genuine fulfillment in participation, appreciation, and contribution.
Those who develop the healing and “heart” of wholeness or identify themselves as an improving “work in progress” have tolerance for difficulties, ability to work communally, and desire to contribute.
Disruptive Therapy
Healthy therapy loses its focus on healing and restoration when it loses the wisdom of consideration.
The wisdom of consideration is the process in which a “client,” for example, does healing work around family of origin wounds and identifies the need to restore the true self.
To restore the true self is to be able to know one’s own feelings, needs, desire, longings, and hope without toxic shame or self-doubt.
Toxic shame and self-doubt are diminished through community with non-shaming people.
Therapy disrupts the healthy process when boundaries become walls and feelings become weapons—
If the therapist and client do not go beyond “what happened” and move into the consideration for the people who through ignorance, denial, or incapability were part of the loss of self, boundaries become walls instead of fences and division is increased. Walls create isolation. Fences create respect.
If the therapist helps the client turn feelings into rights rather than the tools that help a person make decisions, they are helping client’s get “stuck” in a victim status, rather than choice making response-ability.
The true self is not the right to not have to feel and make choices. It is the ability to know yourself and become responsible for your own actions that never give up on love and restoration—though a person may have to grieve deeply that the ones they hoped to be in relationship with do not seek restoration, too.
