The Medieval Knight: Geoffroi de Charny’s Life, Chivalry & Legacy
2026/10/21
What did it mean to be a medieval knight? Explore the life of Geoffroi de Charny, a fourteenth-century French warrior whose Book of Chivalry reveals the ideals and harsh realities of knighthood.
Born around 1300, Charny earned a reputation for courage, loyalty, and honour during the Hundred Years’ War. He served the French crown, joined military campaigns and crusading ventures, and was entrusted with carrying the Oriflamme, the sacred battle standard of the kings of France. In 1356, he died at the Battle of Poitiers defending King John II of France.
Drawing on a lifetime of experience, Charny presented chivalry as far more than courtly manners or romantic adventure. His Book of Chivalry describes a demanding way of life shaped by hardship, reputation, religious devotion, and the pursuit of honour.
Discover how this remarkable text exposes the tension between the noble ideals of medieval knighthood and the violence of a warrior’s profession.

Simon de Montfort: The French Knight Who Claimed England's Throne
2026/10/10
Simon de Montfort, a formidable figure in medieval England, was born into a noble French family around 1208. As Earl of Leicester, he found himself at the heart of a struggle over the monarchy's power. Initially allied with King Henry III through marriage to Henry's sister, Eleanor, Simon grew disillusioned with the king's rule, opposing his use of authority and favoritism.
By 1258, unrest among barons led to the Provisions of Oxford, curbing royal power. Simon emerged as a leader of the opposition, propelling England into civil war. His victory at the 1264 Battle of Lewes left King Henry and Prince Edward captive, making Simon the de facto ruler.
Simon’s 1265 Parliament, though not modern democracy, was pivotal in developing parliamentary governance. However, his reign was marked by violence and anti-Semitic measures. Despite initial success, his support waned, and he was killed at the 1265 Battle of Evesham. His rebellion reshaped the monarchy and left a lasting legacy.

Ímar: The Viking King Who Built an Empire
2026/10/03
In the ninth century, Vikings reshaped the history of Ireland and Britain. Among their most potent leaders was Ímar, a mysterious Viking sea king who ruled with Olaf the White, established his power in Dublin, fought Irish kingdoms, and helped forge a Norse dynasty influencing the British Isles for generations.
Could Ímar have been Ivar the Boneless, the legendary son of Ragnar Lothbrok and renowned commander of the Great Heathen Army?
This historical documentary delves into Ímar's remarkable career: from his campaigns in Ireland and the ascent of Viking Dublin to the conquest of Anglo-Saxon England, the 870 siege of Dumbarton Rock, and his enigmatic death in 873, when the Irish annals called him “King of the Norsemen of all Ireland and Britain.”
Utilizing medieval chronicles, Irish annals, Anglo-Saxon records, and Norse legends, we examine the evidence linking Ímar to Ivar the Boneless, discern historical fact from later mythology, and uncover the genesis of the influential Uí Ímair dynasty, whose descendants ruled Ireland, Northumbria, and the Irish Sea.
Was Ímar one of the greatest Viking rulers of the ninth century, and was he truly the legendary Ivar the Boneless?

Charles Martel: The Warrior Who Halted the Muslim Advance in Europe
2026/08/20
Ever wondered about the pivotal moment when Muslim armies ventured deep into Western Europe in the early eighth century and who bravely opposed them? By 732, the mighty armies of the Umayyad Caliphate had crossed the Pyrenees from the Iberian Peninsula, advancing deep into present-day France. Following decades of expansion across the Middle East, North Africa, and Spain, their forces threatened the heart of the Frankish world.
Standing against them was Charles Martel, one of the early Middle Ages’ great warriors. Known as “The Hammer,” Charles was a formidable commander whose strength and military acumen had established him as the dominant figure among the Franks. Not a king, yet possessing unmatched power, Charles rallied the Frankish armies to meet this dire threat.
His defining moment came at the Battle of Tours in 732, also known as the Battle of Poitiers. There, Charles and his men faced the Umayyad force led by Abd al-Rahman al-Ghafiqi. With strategic acumen, Charles formed his forces into a disciplined defensive force, ready for battle. The two armies stood off for days before engaging in fierce combat.
The disciplined Frankish soldiers held their ground against the Umayyad cavalry. Amidst the fierce fighting, Abd al-Rahman was slain, leading the surviving Umayyad forces to withdraw after nightfall. Charles secured a remarkable victory, bolstering his reputation as a preeminent military leader.
This was not Charles Martel's last confrontation with Umayyad power in Gaul. In subsequent years, he continued campaigns in the south, confronting Muslim forces and solidifying Frankish control. A medieval chronicler later lauded his achievements in vivid words, extolling his battles in Aquitaine and near Narbonne, compelling Umayyad forces to retreat to Spain.
The Battle of Tours, more than a singular military triumph, became emblematic of a grand clash between expanding worlds, with Charles Martel celebrated as a defender of Christian Europe. Though historians debate the battle's singular impact on the continent's fate, its role as a defining moment in Charles's storied career remains undisputed.
Charles Martel's legacy as the Hammer of the Franks and the Saviour of Europe endures, a testament to his indelible mark on European history. This is his story.

The Viking Kings of East Anglia: England Before Unification
2026/07/30
Before England unified, it was a land of divided kingdoms. The island known as Britannia during Roman times had splintered into various tribes and realms.
In the east, near the North Sea, settlers like the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes sought new land and power, leading to the rise of East Anglia.
This kingdom encompassed what we now know as Norfolk and Suffolk, a territory influenced as much by its European neighbors as by the rest of Britain.
The Wuffingas dynasty, claiming divine descent from Woden, rose to power here. Their first known king, Wehha, remains a shadowy figure in history, followed by Wuffa, whose legacy named the dynasty.
Rædwald, the most notable king, achieved the title of Bretwalda, representing supremacy among Anglo-Saxon rulers. His possible connection to the Sutton Hoo ship burial reflects his wealth and power.
Despite Christian influences, conversion was incomplete. Rædwald maintained altars to both Christian and pagan gods.
In the 9th century, the wealth of England attracted Viking raids, culminating in the Great Heathen Army's arrival in 865, led by Ivar the Boneless.
King Edmund of East Anglia faced this threat, and his defeat marked the end of a dynasty but transformed him into a revered saint.

The Viking Kings: Northumbria's Rise and Fall
2026/07/23
Before the nation of England took shape, its north was a battleground of kingdoms. Bernicia and Deira emerged through conflict, forming Northumbria—a land of warrior kings, ancient halls, sacred islands, and golden monasteries. Under leaders like Edwin, Oswald, and Oswiu, Northumbria became a powerhouse in Britain, but internal strife and external threats led to its decline. In 865, the legendary Viking Great Heathen Army, led by figures such as Halfdan Ragnarsson, invaded, toppling kingdoms and seizing York to establish a new Viking realm.
Meanwhile, across the Irish Sea, the Uí Ímair dynasty of Dublin sought power over Dublin and York, linking Ireland and Northumbria in a cross-sea power struggle. In the south, Alfred the Great's descendants, including Edward the Elder and Æthelflæd, challenged the Danelaw's hold. Æthelstan eventually marched north to unite England under one crown. After his death, Viking rulers returned, and his successors, Edmund and Eadred, fought to maintain the unified kingdom. Eric Bloodaxe's reign marked the end of Viking rule in York and an era in history.
This episode recounts Northumbria's journey: born from warfare, crowned in glory, conquered by Vikings, and integral to England's formation—a tale of Saxon kings, Norse leaders, and dynasties across the Irish Sea.
