60 Minutes or less - Episode 73 - Adult DVD
2026/10/20
Welcome to ’60 Minutes or less’ - a podcast from Birthday Cake For Breakfast - where for episode 73, it’s one for the dance-heads, featuring an interview with vocalist Harry Hanson of Leeds-based outfit Adult DVD! Up front in the sextet, in Adult DVD, Hanson paints vivid pictures with his words, with witty, observational lyrics over acid-laced, dance-punk bangers. Having built up quite the reputation with their live show, their hotly tipped self-titled debut album arrived in September 2026 via Fat Possum Records. I caught up with Harry over Zoom a week ahead of release, where we spoke of the new record, as well as video games, Japanese fans, midday sangria and portion sizes in America. 60 Minutes or less - Episode 72 - Constant Smiles
2026/10/06
Welcome to ’60 Minutes or less’ - a podcast from Birthday Cake For Breakfast - where for episode 72, it’s off to the natural world we go, featuring an interview with Ben Jones of Constant Smiles! Ben Jones formed Constant Smiles in 2009 whilst he was living in Martha’s Vineyard - an island off the southern coast of Cape Cod - both of which sound like made up American place names from Nora Ephron films. Based out of New York, in their time together, Constant Smiles has had varying lineups and put out many records, including a number of releases on Sacred Bones. In November 2025, Constant Smiles released latest album ‘Moonflowers’, their debut for Felte Records. I caught up with Ben over Zoom in April 2026 from his place in New York. It came not long after a UK tour, with the lineup including players from friends of the podcast, Modern Nature. We spoke about the tour and the new record, as well as gardening, ghost stories and working on new material. 60 Minutes or less - Episode 71 - Dan Hoff (Gurriers)
2026/09/22
Welcome to ’60 Minutes or less’ - a podcast from Birthday Cake For Breakfast - where for episode 71, it’s the turn of Dan Hoff, vocalist in rowdy Irish punk outfit Gurriers! Having formed during the pandemic, Gurriers first came to my attention at 2000 Trees Festival in 2023, putting on a blistering, no prisoners performance that suggested they would be ones to watch in future. Cut to September 2026 and off the back of massive shows with the likes of Turnstile and Kneecap, the much anticipated second album from Gurriers, ‘Nobody's Coming To Save You’, arrives this month via Play It Again Sam.  A week ahead of its release, I managed to catch up with Dan during a brief break whilst the band were on tour in America. He did sound a bit underwater at times, but such is the case when you’re conversing with someone bang in the middle of nowheresville, USA! We spoke of the new record, as well as trying to be an athlete on tour, performing on ‘Later… with Jools Holland’, Irish musicians and comparisons to The Fall. 60 Minutes or less - Episode 70 - Gilla Band
2026/09/08
Welcome to ’60 Minutes or less’ - a podcast from Birthday Cake For Breakfast - where for episode 70, it’s a treat to feature an interview with vocalist Dara Kiely and guitarist Alan Duggan Borges of Irish noise-rockers Gilla Band! For over a decade, Gilla Band have been wrecking heads on stages around the world and across various well received records, from their 2015 debut album 'Holding Hands With Jamie' to 'Most Normal' in 2022. Ahead of releasing their new record ‘Pugnello’ this month - September 2026 - via Rough Trade Records, I got into it deep with Gilla Band when we spoke over Zoom, touching on their new record, as well as dealing with grief, mental health and Top Cat. 60 Minutes or less - Episode 69 - Mat Haigh (Wot Gorilla?)
2026/08/25
Welcome to ’60 Minutes or less’ - a podcast from Birthday Cake For Breakfast - where for episode 69 it’s a trip down memory lane, featuring an interview with Mat Haigh of Halifax math-rock outfit Wot Gorilla?! Formed in 2009 in Sowerby Bridge, Wot Gorilla? ain’t lying when they say they’ve carved out their own corner of the UK’s math and post-hardcore scene. Nearly 20 years in the game, the line-up has shifted over the years, as they’ve shared stages with all sorts, from Rolo Tomassi to The Get Up Kids. Having interviewed Mat many times over the past decade plus, we reconnected at the start of 2026 ahead of the release of the latest Wot Gorilla? album, ‘Stay Home’, out that very same month via Drongo Records. With the record coming out just shy of 10 years on from the release of their last EP, ‘Angel Numbers’, we had a lot to talk about! Over Zoom, we spoke of life at home in Halifax, Turnstile rumours, the joys of social media, playing music as an older person and almost two decades of Wot Gorilla? 60 Minutes or less - Episode 68 - Weird Nightmare
2026/08/11
Welcome to ’60 Minutes or less’ - a podcast from Birthday Cake For Breakfast - where for episode 68, it’s a delight to welcome back Alex Edkins of METZ and Weird Nightmare! One of the earlier guests in the life of ’60 Minutes or less’ (having appeared on episode 8), there’s been quite a bit of change for Edkins since then, notably power-trio METZ calling it a day in late 2024. With it being maybe a final chance to see them, It was a total joy to fly to Berlin to catch one of their farewell shows - a perfect send-off for three noise-rock heroes. With a new Weird Nightmare album on the horizon (‘Hoopla’ - out May 2026 via Sub Pop and Dine Alone Records), I caught up with Alex over Zoom in April 2026 to talk about the METZ “indefinite hiatus”, appearing on TV with John Mulaney and Richard Kind, British punks and Weezer hot takes. 60 Minutes or less - BONUS - A/S/L: Andrew Falkous (Mclusky / Future of the Left)
2026/08/01
Welcome to ’60 Minutes or less’ - A podcast from Birthday Cake For Breakfast. It’s a treat to feature a special bonus episode, as we welcome back Andrew Falkous of Mclusky and Future of the Left! Originally appearing on the podcast for Episode 37, Falkous returns for what is a regular feature on Birthday Cake For Breakfast - ‘a/s/l’ - which is basically one of those ‘how much is a pint of milk?’ endeavours you used to find in magazines.    The latest Mclusky record ‘i sure am getting sick of this bowling alley’ was released in spring 2026 via Ipecac Recordings. As for Future of the Left, they will be on tour in early 2027 in celebration of 20 years of the album ‘curses’. But we don’t talk about any of that. Instead, I caught up with Andrew over Zoom in April 2026 to quiz him on egg based allergies, happy crying, a love of Queen and The Karate Kid Part II, as well as the recent-ish Mclusky tour of the USA. 60 Minutes or less - Episode 67 - Alex Cameron
2026/07/28
Welcome to ’60 Minutes or less’ - a podcast from Birthday Cake For Breakfast - where for episode 67, I hit the road with Australian song and dance man Alex Cameron, a weirdo pop hero! Since the release of debut album ‘Jumping the Shark' - initially released for free on his website in 2013, before being reissued by Secretly Canadian in 2016 - Cameron has blurred the lines between performance art and genuine pop bops, putting out a series of records that are both smart and hilarious, with lyrics that are endlessly singable. Ahead of releasing his latest album ‘Late to Set’, I caught up with Cameron over Zoom, where we spoke of fellow Aussie pop weirdo Jack Ladder - a previous guest on episode 57 - as well as a love of Depeche Mode, touring with The Strokes, the good lord and - most importantly - what his lifelong friend, business partner, and saxophonist Roy Molloy is up to these days. Through the wonders of the internet, Alex recorded near enough the whole thing from the front seat of his 1997 Japanese Toyota Celsior. Because of this, the signal is occasionally patchy, but such is the sacrifice for an artist and his favoured mode of transport. 60 Minutes or less - Episode 66 - Walter Schreifels (Quicksand / Gorilla Biscuits)
2026/07/14
Welcome to ’60 Minutes or less’ - a podcast from Birthday Cake For Breakfast - where for episode 66, it’s an honour to feature an interview with Walter Schreifels of Quicksand, Gorilla Biscuits, Youth of Today, Rival Schools and more! A man of many iconic moments in hardcore - according to one YouTube comment, the man who “legalised being handsome in hardcore” - Walter Schreifels has been ripping it since the late 80s and continues to do so today. With Quicksand, completed by bassist Sergio Vega and drummer Alan Cage, Schreifels has released four studio albums, with their latest - ‘Bring On The Psychics’ - arriving July 2026 via Equal Vision Records / Rude Records. I caught up with Walter over Zoom in May ahead of the release of their new album, where we spoke of the record, as well as The Smiths, Wetherspoons, 80s movies, his connection to hardcore and the literal youth of today. Walter was talking to me from the lobby of a hotel, so there’s the occasional dip in and out of signal, but you’ll soon get to grips with it. 60 Minutes or less - Episode 65 - Primitive Ring
2026/06/30
Welcome to ’60 Minutes or less’ - a podcast from Birthday Cake For Breakfast - where for episode 65, we get fuzzy, welcoming Bert Hoover, Jon Modaff and Charles Moothart of power-trio supergroup Primitive Ring! Formed in September 2024 and featuring players from the likes of Groop, Frankie and the Witch Fingers, Fuzz and GØGGS, last year saw Primitive Ring release four 7"s across four choice labels at home and in the UK. As expected, these sold like hot cakes and built up anticipation for their forthcoming debut album. With them being spread out across Los Angeles, I caught up with the three of them over Zoom in April 2026, where we spoke of their self-titled debut album - out now on In the Red Records - as well as their influences and aesthetic, collaborating with different labels and being creative during times of hardship. 60 Minutes or less - Episode 64 - Downtown Boys
2026/06/16
Welcome to ’60 Minutes or less’ - a podcast from Birthday Cake For Breakfast - where for episode 64, we get political, welcoming vocalist Victoria Marie and guitarist Joey La Neve DeFrancesco of NYC outfit Downtown Boys! Victoria and Joey first met at union meetings while working together at a hotel in Providence, Rhode Island, brought together to write early songs about issues including exploitative workplaces. Before too long, the collective had three full length albums under their belts and have become known for a raucous live show, whilst still keeping politics front and center. New album ‘Public Luxury’ is out June 2026 via Sub Pop - arriving nearly a decade after their Sub Pop debut ‘Cost of Living’. I caught up with Victoria and Joey over Zoom in April 2026, where we spoke of the new record, as well as cassette tapes, the cost of touring, activism, fighting the good fight and remembering Victoria Marie’s late grandmother - the number one Downtown Boys fan. 60 Minutes or less - Episode 63 - Jim Ward (Sparta / At the Drive-In)
2026/06/02
Welcome to ’60 Minutes or less’ - a podcast from Birthday Cake For Breakfast - where for episode 63, it’s a thrill to feature an interview with Jim Ward of Sparta and At the Drive-In! A native of El Paso, Texas, Ward co-founded cult American post-hardcore band At the Drive-In and during his tenure, released a trio of studio albums and several EPs to much acclaim, before the band knocked it on the head in 2001.  Moving on from the break up sharpish, Ward’s next move was to form Sparta with members of At the Drive-In. With numerous line-up changes over the lifetime of the band, the outfit have put out six studio albums across 20+ years, with their latest album - ‘Cut a Silhouette’ - arriving May 2026 via Equal Vision Records. I caught up with Jim over Zoom the week of releasing ‘Cut a Silhouette’, where we spoke of the new record, as well as the built up mythology of At the Drive-In, drinking to cope with music industry pressures, a lifelong love of Billy Joel and the infamous At the Drive-In appearance on ‘Later... with Jools Holland’, featuring a bemused Robbie Williams.  If you like the episode, let us know - follow us on your favourite streaming platform and follow Birthday Cake For Breakfast on all the socials. 60 Minutes or less - Episode 62 - COLA
2026/05/19
Welcome to ’60 Minutes or less’ - a podcast from Birthday Cake For Breakfast - where for episode 62, it’s a real treat to feature an interview with Evan Cartwright and Ben Stidworthy, two thirds of Canadian post-punkers COLA. With guitarist and vocalist Tim Darcy completing the trio, COLA brings together players from Ought and U.S. Girls and they’ve got chops in abundance. The power-trio have put out three glittering full lengths in their time together, with their 2024 release ‘The Gloss’ being a personal favourite.  Their latest album ‘Cost of Living Adjustment’ arrived May 2026 via Fire Talk Records, another vibe-y collection of smart art-punk numbers. I spoke with Evan and Ben over Zoom ahead of the release of the new record, where we touched on playing with METZ in Berlin and the rumour of a trip to Berghain, as well as creativity, having your ideas pinched by The Strokes and the Manchester baggy sound. Stick around till the end too for some real choice Manchester chat. 60 Minutes or less - Episode 61 - La Sécurité
2026/05/05
Welcome to ’60 Minutes or less’ - a podcast from Birthday Cake For Breakfast - where for episode 61, I’m tickled pink to feature an interview with Éliane Viens and Félix Bélisle of Canadian art-punks, La Sécurité! A head-spinning art-punk collective based out of Montreal, La Sécurité first caught my attention with the release of a couple of knock out singles in 2024. Wonky bops that take in everything from egg-punk to new-wave to post-punk, their energetic concoctions are best encountered at a sweaty live show.  Following up on their 2023 released debut album ‘Stay Safe!’, their new album ‘Bingo!’ arrives June 12th 2026 via Bella Union and Mothland. The reveal of this came out during our interview as we actually spoke with La Sécurité in October 2025, not long after the quintet had rocked my world at Manchester Psych Fest. Recorded over Zoom, we spoke of the new record, as well as signing with Bella Union and hanging out with Simon Raymonde, being “Montreal late” - owing to Éliane’s late arrival - and having a song featured in TV sensation ‘Emily In Paris’. 60 Minutes or less - Episode 60 - Steve Mason (The Beta Band)
2026/04/21
Welcome to ’60 Minutes or less’ - a podcast from Birthday Cake For Breakfast - where to mark the big 6-0, for this episode I’m delighted to feature an interview with Scottish singer songwriter Steve Mason, him up front in The Beta Band! Vocalist and a founding member of The Beta Band, Mason is also a critically acclaimed solo artist in his own right, having released five albums under his own name. With The Beta Band, Mason and co released three studio albums that landed in the Top 20 in the UK charts, with their ‘The Three E.P.’s’ compilation being a notable favourite amongst fans (even featuring in a much loved scene from the film ‘High Fidelity’). After knocking the band on the head in 2004 - with their label owed a cool million quid - following a 20 year break, The Beta Band made their long awaited return in 2025, selling out an Autumn tour of the UK within hours, with dates on the horizon this year too. Ahead of the release of his new memoir ‘Failure is Always an Option: Glorious Adventures On The Beta Band Front Line and Other Tales’ (out April 2026 via New Modern), we caught up with Mason over Zoom, where we talked about the book, as well as the long awaited return of The Beta Band, immigration and its benefit to music, navigating depression and good and bad celebrity encounters - from Brian Wilson to Julia Davis to Fred Durst (naturally).
