Description

Are you thinking about your business exit strategy, wondering when to start exit planning, or trying to build a Canadian business that could actually run and one day sell without you? Maybe selling your business is still years away. Maybe an exit is starting to feel much closer. Or maybe you simply know that too much of your company’s value, knowledge, decision-making, client relationships, and day-to-day operations still depend on you. If you stepped away tomorrow, you’re not entirely sure what would happen. If that sounds familiar, you’re in the right place. The Exit Ready Business is for Canadian founders who want to build a stronger, more valuable business today while creating more options for what comes next. Whether your future includes stepping back, succession, or selling a business, you’ll learn how to reduce founder dependency, strengthen your business operations, build better business systems, and intentionally increase business value long before you’re ready to leave. I’m Amy Sussex, a Business Exit Strategist who helps founder-led businesses prepare for a future beyond their founder. This work is personal for me. I grew up watching my parents build our family business, and years later, I watched them make the decision to sell it. Seeing that transition up close gave me an understanding of just how much is wrapped up in leaving a business you’ve spent years building not only financially, but personally too. It’s a big part of why I care so much about helping founders think about their exit earlier, so when the time comes, they can step into whatever is next feeling prepared, confident, and good about the decisions they’ve made.  Because exit readiness doesn’t begin when you call a broker or decide it’s time to sell. It begins years earlier. It’s in the systems you build, the knowledge you document, the team you develop, the numbers you understand, the responsibilities you let go of, and the decisions you make about where the value of your business lives. Each week, we’ll talk about the operational side of building a business worth buying. From business succession planning and business valuation to SOPs, leadership, systems, transferability, team structure, and preparing a business for sale, we’ll look at what makes a business easier to operate today and more valuable and transferable tomorrow. You’ll also hear conversations with Canadian founders and experts across the exit ecosystem about what it really takes to prepare a business for its next chapter and what founders can start doing long before they’re ready to make that move. The goal isn’t simply to build a successful business. It’s to build one that gives you choices. If you want more freedom from your business now and more options for what happens to it later, hit play and subscribe to The Exit Ready Business. Start here:  Take the Is Your Business Worth Buying? 2026/09/29
If your business can't operate without you, your SOPs may be the missing piece between running a successful company and building one someone else could confidently own. Creating standard operating procedures isn't about documenting every task or producing manuals nobody reads. It's about building business systems that move critical knowledge out of your head and into processes your team can confidently follow. Where should you start? In this episdoes I break down how to create practical SOPs, what information to include and which processes deserve your attention first. From client onboarding to financial reporting, you'll learn how to identify the operational gaps that create founder dependency and make your business harder to transfer. You'll discover how to: Create clear, actionable procedures your team will actually use.Identify the three to five critical processes to document first.Record, write, test and maintain your SOPs.Strengthen business operations while preparing for a future sale. This is where documentation becomes more than an administrative task. Stronger processes support business transferability by making it easier for someone else to understand, manage and eventually own what you've built. Whether you're planning to sell in two years or ten, exit readiness starts with the operational decisions you're making today. You don't need to document everything at once. You need to start with the processes that protect your business's value and reduce its reliance on you. Ready to get started? Could You Sell Your Business Someday? 5 Things You Should Be Doing Now
2026/09/22
You don’t need to be ready to sell your business to start building one that someone else could actually buy. Maybe selling isn’t part of your plan right now. Maybe it’s something you’ve thought about in passing, or maybe you simply like knowing that the option could be there someday. But if you did decide to sell your business five or ten years from now, would you be building it differently today? In this episode, I’m sharing five things you can start thinking about now to increase your business value and create a company that isn’t completely dependent on you to operate. We’re talking about founder dependency, the strength of your business systems, and the things that contribute to business transferability when someone else eventually needs to step into what you’ve built. Preparing to sell your business isn’t only about what happens when you’re ready to leave. Your exit readiness is shaped by decisions you’re making years before a potential sale ever happens. The goal isn’t to build your business as though you’re constantly preparing to walk away from it. It’s to build something strong enough to give you options. That means looking at where the knowledge lives, how decisions get made, how much the business relies on you personally, and whether someone else could realistically step in and continue operating what you’ve created. Even if you never sell your business, doing this work can create a stronger company today, one with more independence, more value, and more freedom for you as the owner. If you do eventually decide to sell your business, you’ll be starting from a very different position because you’ve spent years intentionally building a business worth buying. Business Exit Planning: Are Canadian Business Owners Ready for the Wave?
2026/09/15
What happens when thousands of Canadian business owners reach retirement age but the businesses they've spent decades building aren't ready to operate without them? The coming wave of business transitions is predictable. The question is whether owners are preparing for it. Business exit planning isn't something that begins when you call a broker. It begins years earlier, in the decisions you're making about your operations, leadership, systems, and relationships. If everything still depends on you, a future buyer or successor may be taking on far more risk than they realize. We look at why so many owners struggle to prepare, from finding the right buyer or successor to understanding business valuation and addressing founder dependency. A profitable business can still be difficult to transfer when its knowledge, client relationships, and decision-making remain concentrated in one person. You'll also hear why “I'll deal with it later” doesn't necessarily buy you more time. Whether you're considering business succession, succession planning Canada, or a small business exit strategy, readiness is built through decisions not simply through the passage of time. The good news is that you don't need to have a buyer, a timeline, or a complete exit plan today. You can start by documenting what lives in your head, strengthening your team, improving operational visibility, and making your business more transferable. That's how you create freedom, flexibility, and options for the future. If you're a Canadian business owner wondering whether your company is ready for what comes next, take the Is Your Business Worth Buying? quiz. It's a practical place to understand where your business stands and what deserves your attention next. What Buyers Actually Value: Business Operations & Exit Planning
2026/09/08
What if your business looks successful on paper but a buyer would struggle to take it over? That’s the question behind business operations and exit planning. Revenue, profitability, and strong client relationships matter, but they don’t tell the whole story. The real question is whether the business can continue to perform when the founder is no longer the person making every decision, solving every problem, and keeping everything moving.   This conversation reframes business worth around what exists beyond the founder. You’ll learn why founder dependency can create risk, how business systems and documented processes make knowledge transferable, and why having a team is not the same as having a business that can operate without you.   We also look at leadership and delegation, meaningful reporting, KPIs, and visibility. Strong business operations give a future owner the information they need to understand what is happening, where the risks are, and what needs attention. That clarity reduces uncertainty and uncertainty can affect business worth.   The goal isn’t to create paperwork for the sake of paperwork. It’s to build business transferability through practical systems, capable leaders, documented knowledge, and better decision-making. This is where business exit planning becomes more than something you do when you’re ready to sell. It becomes part of building a stronger business today. Whether your future involves a sale, succession, stepping away as CEO, or simply having more freedom, the work starts long before the transaction. Look at what happens when you step back. What still moves? What stops? What only you know? Better business operations don’t just make a company easier to run. They create options, reduce risk, and help build a business worth buying. The Mindset Shift That Gets You Out of the Day-to-Day in Your Business
2026/09/08
A mindset shift is often the first step toward building a business that can operate without you. Sometimes the biggest thing keeping your business dependent on you isn't your team, your systems, or your technology. It's the way you've trained the business to rely on you. If you're still the person making every important decision, solving every unexpected problem, stepping into client relationships, or answering questions your team should be able to handle, you've unintentionally created founder dependency. And changing that takes more than delegating a few tasks. In this episode, I'm talking about the founder mindset that has to change as your business grows and why moving from operator to owner means changing the way you respond when something needs to be done. Instead of asking, "How do I fix this?" we need to start asking different questions.  What information is missing? What hasn't been documented? Where is decision-making authority unclear? What does someone else need to know so this problem doesn't automatically come back to me next time? That's where your entrepreneurial mindset begins to evolve from solving today's problems to building a business capable of solving tomorrow's without you. We'll also look at what happens when you start giving your team the knowledge, systems, authority, and confidence they need to make decisions independently and why that matters for exit readiness long before you're actually thinking about selling your business. Here's the question I want you to consider: If you disappeared from your business for 30 days, what would break? Which decisions would stop? Which clients would immediately ask for you? What knowledge would disappear with you? Those answers tell you a lot about how transferable your business really is. The goal isn't to remove yourself overnight. It's to intentionally build a business that can continue beyond you, whether you eventually pursue a business exit strategy, transfer leadership, or simply want more freedom from the day-to-day. How to Sell a Business: Is Your Business Ready to Run Without You?
2026/09/08
How to sell a business starts long before you ever speak to a buyer. If you stepped away tomorrow, would everything keep working? A successful business is not automatically a transferable business. If sales, client relationships, operations, decisions, and knowledge depend on the founder, you may have created a job rather than an asset. That founder dependency can affect exit readiness, business value, and your options at exit. Learning how to sell a business means getting specific about where the dependency exists. Are you the only person who can close a sale, solve a problem, make a key decision, or manage an important relationship? What knowledge lives in your head, inbox, or spreadsheets? This is where how to sell a business becomes less about finding a buyer and more about building something a buyer can understand, operate, and trust. Documenting business operations creates structure and consistency. Consistency makes the business more transferable. Your team matters too. If every decision comes back to you, ask whether people have the authority and business systems they need to act independently. Start small: move one decision into the business and give someone ownership. The goal is to create a sustainable business that works with you, not because of you. Strong client and supplier relationships are valuable, but how to sell a business also means asking whether those relationships belong to the company or only exist because of the founder. Building relationships across the organization reduces risk and strengthens business value. Every documented process, delegated decision, stronger relationship, and clearer system improves exit readiness and gives you more freedom today. Maybe you sell, bring in a partner, or simply work fewer hours. If you’re wondering how to sell a business, start with a better question: what would make this business worth buying? Business Exit Strategy: Why You Should Start Before You're Ready to Sell (Trailer)
2026/09/01
A business exit strategy isn't something you create when you're finally ready to sell. It starts years earlier with how you build your business today.  Building a successful business is one thing. Building one that can thrive without you and that someone else could eventually own, is something different. I grew up watching my parents build our family business, and years later, I watched them make the decision to sell it. Seeing that transition up close showed me that leaving a business is about so much more than a financial transaction. Your identity, relationships, knowledge, team, and years of work are all wrapped up in what you've built. I'm Amy Sussex, a Canadian Business Exit Strategist helping founders build businesses that are ready for whatever comes next. And there's one question I want more business owners to ask: What would happen to your business if you stepped away tomorrow?  Could your team make decisions without you? Would your clients still be well looked after? Could the business keep running? If someone wanted to buy it, would there be a transferable business to purchase or a job that's still dependent on its founder? That's what The Exit Ready Business is about.  Each week, we'll talk about exit planning, business exit planning, founder dependency, business systems, business transferability, business value, succession planning, and what it really takes to build a company someone else could successfully operate and eventually buy.  You'll also hear conversations with Canadian founders and experts about the realities of selling a business, preparing for a business transition, and the decisions you can make today to increase business value, even if selling isn't on your radar for years.  You don't have to be ready to leave your business to start making it exit ready.  You can start building it as an asset today, one that gives you more freedom now, more value over time, and more options when you're ready for whatever comes next.  If that's the kind of business you want to build, subscribe to The Exit Ready Business and join me each week.

100: Strategic Planning for Female Entrepreneurs: Are You Growing with Intention?
2026/08/11
What if growing your business is actually taking you further away from the life you want? I’ve learned that for female entrepreneurs, growth can easily become a cycle of doing more: more offers, more content, more networking, more hours. However, intentional business growth starts with a different question: is my business supporting the life I actually want? In this episode I’m looking at business strategy through a more personal lens. For me, business strategy isn’t only about revenue targets. It’s about creating an aligned business around my values, priorities, energy, and the season of life I’m in. I share three questions I ask regularly. First, does my business fit the season of life I’m in? I know the pull between being present at home and focused on work. Your business growth mindset needs to leave room for real life. Next, do my daily decisions reflect my values and long-term vision? I explain why your calendar tells the truth and how a business mindset shift can change decisions. Instead of asking, “Can I do this?” I can ask, “Should I do this?” That simple question can protect my time, energy, and peace. Finally, I look at whether my day-to-day business activities are actually moving me towards the life and business I want. Being busy isn’t the same as making progress. That’s where strategic planning becomes valuable: it helps me focus on what matters, build business confidence, and stop chasing every trend or comparing my journey to someone else’s. I’ve learned that sustainable business growth requires clarity, intentional entrepreneurship, and a business that works with my life. If you’re feeling pulled in too many directions, grab a notebook and ask yourself these three questions. Then listen in and consider what strategic planning could look like in this season. 99: Business Admin Systems: How to Stop Running Your Business From Your Memory
2026/08/04
If business admin systems feel like the least exciting part of running your business, you're not alone.  When information lives in your memory instead of reliable systems, even simple tasks become harder, mistakes increase, and growth starts to feel overwhelming. Strong business organization isn't about adding complexity; it's about creating consistency. By focusing on practical administrative systems and repeatable business processes, you make it easier to serve clients, stay on top of priorities, and reduce the mental load of remembering every detail. It's not about working harde, it's about creating a business that works even when you're not thinking about every moving part. A simple framework can transform the way you operate: organize what matters, create clear documentation, schedule recurring tasks instead of relying on memory, and review what's slowing you down. These small improvements strengthen your workflow management, support better productivity systems, and create the foundation for effective SOPs for small business that can be followed by anyone on your team. The goal of business admin systems isn't perfection. It's building confidence, clarity, and a business that can grow without becoming dependent on you. One process improved today creates more freedom tomorrow, and those consistent changes are what lead to lasting success.  Resources Websitehttps://thebusinessmanagementco.com/ Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/amy.sussex/ Youtube https://www.youtube.com/@TheBusinessManagementCo A few of my fav things: (please note these are affiliate links)  Buzzsprout  https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=2271913 Dubsado  dubsado.com/?c=amybmc  High Vibe Women Community https://high-vibe-women.circle.so/checkout/the-online-community?affiliate_code=9b1729 This podcast is produced, mixed, and edited by Cardinal Studio. 94: Stop Overcomplicating Business Systems: Simplicity Is Your Advantage
2026/06/30
Instead of chasing the latest tools, focus on building habits that strengthen your business operations. A client onboarding checklist, a weekly finance review, or a simple follow-up process can become the foundation of effective small business systems. These practical routines improve productivity, create confidence, and make it easier to deliver a consistent experience without relying on memory. Understanding the difference between process vs system in business is where everything begins to click. A process explains how a task gets done, while a business system brings those processes together into a repeatable framework that supports long-term success. This shift allows systems for entrepreneurs to feel practical instead of overwhelming while encouraging steady business process improvement. When your workflow for small business is built around simplicity rather than perfection, growth becomes far more sustainable. Thoughtful standard operating procedures and well-designed business systems help eliminate unnecessary friction, improve business efficiency, and free up more time for the work that matters most. That's the true value of a business system, creating reliable structure that supports both your business and your peace of mind. If you're ready to simplify your business instead of adding more complexity, subscribe so you never miss an episode, and share this conversation with another business owner who could benefit from building smarter systems, one simple step at a time.
