Most Australians assume their estate will simply pass to their spouse or split evenly between the kids. The data says otherwise. In this episode of The Purposeful Investor, David Andrew and Aden Wilkins sit down with Morgan Solomon, founder of Solomon Hollett Lawyers and recently named Western Australia’s number one inheritance firm in the Doyles Guide, to unpack the second volume of the Inheritance State of Play research. Drawing on a survey of around 900 Western Australians across every age group and wealth bracket, they reveal why 41% of us will die without a will, why Generation X is the danger zone, and what it all means for the trillions of dollars about to change hands.
In today's episode:
• 41% of Australians are now on track to die without a will, up from the one in three figure that held steady for decades. Dying intestate in WA hands your estate to a fixed formula under the Administration Act, not to whoever you assumed would receive it.
• Around $3 trillion of the great wealth transfer is set to pass through Generation X in intestacy. Only 50% of Gen X have a will, yet they are about to become the wealthiest generation in the country.
• Will coverage by generation is revealing. Gen Z sits at 19%, millennials around 31%, Gen X at 50%, boomers at 90% and the silent generation at 95%. The middle, Gen X, is where most future disputes will land.
• The conversation is the missing piece. Only 18% of families have had a detailed estate discussion, 48% have had none at all, and 18.2% never intend to. 57% of Gen Z expect an inheritance fight while only 27% of boomers see one coming.
• A new class of claimant has emerged, the thin veneer of affluence. They look successful, with a job, a home and a family, but are structurally squeezed by debt. Courts are increasingly recognising them as genuine claimants under the Family Provision Act.
