Description

Take 2 Theology is a twice-weekly podcast hosted by Michael Mott and Zachary Hale, elders at Charleston Bible Church. Each episode explores Scripture, theology, and Christian living through thoughtful conversations, interviews, and the occasional friendly debate. Whether we’re walking through a book of the Bible, tackling a tough doctrinal topic, or drafting our favorite children’s Bible songs March Madness-style, our aim is the same: to think deeply about God’s truth and invite others to do the same.

Luther Was a Mess | Thank God for Grace Through Faith
2026/10/29
Season 3, Episode 18 In this Reformation Day special, Michael and Zach look past the polished version of Martin Luther to the complicated man himself. They begin by examining several popular Luther myths, including the famous hammer at the church door, “Here I stand,” the first German Bible, the Apocrypha, “faith alone,” and even the Christian shoemaker quote he probably never said. The discussion then turns to the far more serious problem of Luther’s later anti-Jewish writings, tracing the sharp change from his relatively sympathetic 1523 posture to the vicious recommendations of 1543 and asking how Christians should reckon honestly with a deeply flawed reformer. From there, the episode returns to the heart of the Reformation: justification by faith. Luther’s own struggles with guilt, despair, illness, and Anfechtung become a reminder that the gospel does not rest on the moral record of its messengers. The episode closes by connecting justification, assurance, and vocation to ordinary Christian life. The Unseen Realm 2.0 | Aliens Part 2: Why Christians Hesitate—and Why It Matters
2026/10/27
Season 3, Episode 17 In this episode, Michael, Zach, and Clay continue their discussion of aliens and non-human intelligence by turning from reported phenomena to the theological questions Christians often raise. If intelligent extraterrestrial beings existed, would that conflict with Scripture? Would they be made in God’s image, capable of sin, or in need of redemption? The conversation then moves into more speculative territory, connecting modern abduction and hybridization claims with Genesis 6, the Watchers, Nephilim, Jude 6, and the possibility of recurring attempts to corrupt or supplant humanity. Michael, Zach, and Clay also explore end-times speculation, including whether future supernatural events could be interpreted through an “alien” framework, before considering reports of different kinds of alleged beings. The episode closes on a more practical note: Christians do not need to accept every extraordinary claim, but a biblical supernatural worldview can provide categories for engaging people who report strange experiences without immediately dismissing them—or pretending speculation is certainty. The Septuagint Explained | Origins and the Letter of Aristeas
2026/10/22
Season 3, Episode 16 In this episode, Michael and Zach begin a new mini-series on the Septuagint—the ancient Greek translation of the Old Testament that regularly appears in biblical studies and has come up throughout The Unseen Realm 2.0. They begin by explaining what the Septuagint, or LXX, actually is, why Greek-speaking Jews in Alexandria needed a translation of the Hebrew Scriptures, and why the name “Septuagint” points back to a tradition involving seventy-two translators. The discussion then turns to the Letter of Aristeas, the earliest surviving account of the translation’s origins: a story involving Ptolemy II, the Library of Alexandria, the Jewish high priest Eleazar, seventy-two elders, and a translation of the Torah completed in seventy-two days. Michael and Zach also examine the political and cultural setting behind the story, the Jewish community’s dramatic endorsement of the translation, and an important detail often lost in later retellings: Aristeas describes the translators working together toward consensus—not producing miraculously identical translations in isolation. The Unseen Realm 2.0 | Aliens Part 1: Making Sense of Disclosure and Lights in the Sky
2026/10/20
Season 3, Episode 15 In this episode, Michael and Zach are joined by Clay to begin a two-part discussion on aliens, UFOs, government disclosure, and how Christians might think about unexplained phenomena within a biblical worldview. The conversation starts by defining what “extraterrestrial” actually means and questioning the tendency to place every unusual encounter into only a few categories: angels, demons, extraterrestrials, or fabrication. From there, they consider the 1561 Nuremberg celestial phenomenon, recent government disclosures and radar reports, Diana Pasulka’s claims about material in the Vatican archives, and John Mack’s research into alleged abduction experiences. The discussion then turns toward Scripture, particularly the fiery chariots of 2 Kings 2 and 6, and the difficult question of how physical and spiritual realities might overlap. Throughout the episode, Michael, Zach, and Clay openly distinguish evidence from interpretation and speculation, laying the groundwork for a second conversation about why Christians are often hesitant to engage the subject and why any of this might matter. Galatians | Bearing Burdens and Final Warnings
2026/10/15
Season 3, Episode 14 In this episode, Michael and Zach conclude their series through Galatians by examining what life in the freedom of the gospel actually looks like within the church. In Galatians 6:1–18, Paul calls Spirit-led believers to restore those caught in sin with gentleness, bear one another’s burdens, remain personally accountable, and persevere in doing good. The discussion explores the balance between mutual care and individual responsibility, Paul’s warning that whatever a person sows he will also reap, and his final contrast between the Judaizers’ outward boasting and his own boast in the cross of Christ. Michael and Zach also consider Paul’s emphasis on new creation, the debated phrase “Israel of God,” and the scars he bears for Jesus. The letter closes where its argument has pointed all along: not Law, human achievement, or flesh, but grace. Galatians ultimately presents a gospel of justification by faith that produces a life of love, holiness, service, perseverance, and freedom in the Spirit. The Unseen Realm 2.0 | The Devil We Made Up—and the One Scripture Gives Us
2026/10/13
Season 3, Episode 13 In this episode, Michael and Zach are joined by Clay and continue The Unseen Realm 2.0 by separating the biblical portrait of Satan from the traditions that have filled in the gaps. They begin with John Milton’s Paradise Lost, showing how its dramatic rebellion, war in heaven, and cast of fallen angels helped shape the way many Christians imagine Satan—even where Scripture itself is far less specific. The discussion then examines Beelzebub, Belial, Moloch, and Mammon, asking what the Bible actually says about each name. From there, Michael and Zach turn to the mysterious Azazel of Leviticus 16 and the origin of the “scapegoat,” before addressing another popular misconception: Satan does not rule hell; Scripture presents final judgment as his punishment, while describing his present influence in the world as real but temporary and subordinate to God. The episode closes with Genesis 3:15 and the biblical emphasis not on Satan’s elaborate backstory, but on his promised and certain defeat. Galatians | Flesh Versus Spirit
2026/10/08
Season 3, Episode 12 In this episode, Michael and Zach continue through Galatians by examining Paul’s contrast between the flesh and the Spirit in Galatians 5:16–26. Paul’s answer to the danger of abusing Christian freedom is not a return to the Law, but a life directed by the Spirit. The discussion explores the real conflict believers experience between fleshly desires and the Spirit, the warning that a life characterized by the works of the flesh is incompatible with inheriting the kingdom of God, and the familiar but often misunderstood fruit of the Spirit. Michael and Zach also examine Paul’s contrast between the works of the flesh and the fruit produced by the Spirit, his declaration that those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires, and his call to live consistently with the new life the Spirit gives. The passage ultimately shows that Christian freedom is neither legalism nor license, but Spirit-led transformation expressed in Christlike character and relationships. The Unseen Realm 2.0 | Lucifer, the Fallen Angel, and the Devil’s Origin Story
2026/10/06
Season 3, Episode 11 In this episode, Michael and Zach are joined by Clay and continue The Unseen Realm 2.0 by examining the biblical passages traditionally used to explain Satan’s origin and fall. Was Lucifer actually Satan’s original name? Was Satan once an anointed cherub or even heaven’s worship leader? Beginning with Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28, the discussion explores the historical context of these prophecies against the kings of Babylon and Tyre, the origins of the name Lucifer, and the challenges of interpreting their striking heavenly imagery as a biography of Satan. Michael and Zach then turn to Revelation 12 and the war in heaven, considering whether Satan’s expulsion describes a primordial rebellion, Christ’s victory through His death and resurrection, or a future event. Along the way, they examine Jesus’ declaration in Luke 10:18 that He saw Satan fall like lightning. The episode distinguishes established biblical teaching from traditional interpretations and speculation, ultimately emphasizing that Scripture tells us more clearly about Satan’s defeat through Christ than the precise circumstances of his origin. Galatians | Stand Firm in Freedom
2026/10/01
Season 3, Episode 10 In this episode, Michael and Zach continue through Galatians with Paul’s call to “stand firm” in the freedom Christ has already secured. Galatians 5:1–15 warns that if circumcision is treated as necessary for justification, it is no longer a harmless addition—it places a person under obligation to the whole Law and treats Christ as insufficient. Paul contrasts that approach with the Christian life of faith through the Spirit, emphasizing that what matters is “faith working through love.” The discussion also examines Paul’s warning that even a small distortion can corrupt the gospel, his severe language toward those troubling the Galatians, and the offense of the cross as a declaration that human effort cannot establish righteousness. Paul then turns from legalism to the opposite danger: license. Christian freedom is not permission to serve the flesh, but freedom to serve one another in love. Galatians | Paul’s Plea and Two Sons
2026/09/29
Season 3, Episode 8 In this episode, Michael and Zach continue through Galatians by examining Paul’s deeply personal appeal in Galatians 4:12–31. Paul reminds the Galatians of the affection they once had for him and asks how telling them the truth has made him seem like an enemy. He contrasts the motives of the false teachers, who seek dependence and loyalty, with his own desire to see Christ formed in them. Paul then returns to Abraham, using Hagar and Sarah, Ishmael and Isaac, as an illustration of two fundamentally different ways of relating to God’s promise: slavery through human effort and freedom through divine promise. The discussion explores Paul’s striking identification of Hagar with Sinai and the present Jerusalem, his quotation of Isaiah 54, and his conclusion that believers are already children of promise. The Galatians do not need to place themselves under the Law to become legitimate heirs; in Christ, they already are. The Unseen Realm 2.0 | Was Satan Ever a Snake? Who Is the Satan?
2026/09/24
Season 3, Episode 9 In this episode, Michael and Zach are joined by Clay and continue The Unseen Realm 2.0 by tracing how the Bible develops its picture of Satan from Genesis to Revelation. They begin in Eden with the nachash of Genesis 3, asking whether the serpent should be understood as an ordinary snake, a supernatural being, or something more complex, while carefully separating strong textual connections from more speculative interpretations. The discussion then turns to Job 1–2, where ha-satan appears not yet as a proper name but as “the adversary” or accuser functioning within God’s heavenly court. From there, Michael and Zach follow the term through Numbers, Zechariah, and Chronicles, showing how a Hebrew job description gradually becomes associated with a distinct personal adversary. The episode concludes in the New Testament, where Satan, the devil, the tempter, the evil one, and the ancient serpent converge as titles for the same figure, culminating in Revelation 12:9. The Unseen Realm 2.0 | Cosmic Vocabulary III: Demons and the Giants of the Land
2026/09/22
Season 3, Episode 7 In this episode, Michael and Zach are joined by Clay and conclude the Cosmic Vocabulary mini-series by examining the Bible’s language for demons and tracing the giant-clan storyline from the Nephilim of Genesis 6 to Goliath and the giants of Gath. The discussion looks at New Testament terms such as daimonion and “unclean spirit,” Old Testament references to shedim and se'irim, and the influential Second Temple Jewish tradition that identified demons as the disembodied spirits of the dead giants. Michael and Zach carefully distinguish that Enochic explanation from what canonical Scripture actually states. They then explore the difficult question of how Nephilim or related giant clans appear after the flood, considering several proposed explanations before surveying the Anakim, Rephaim, Emim, Zamzummim, King Og, and Goliath. Along the way, they examine the gibborim or “mighty men” motif and the striking biblical throughline that connects Genesis, the conquest, and David’s battles while distinguishing strong textual patterns from more speculative claims. Galatians | From Slaves to Sons
2026/09/17
Season 3, Episode 6 In this episode, Michael and Zach continue their series through Galatians by examining Paul’s movement from slavery to sonship in Galatians 4:1–11. Paul describes God’s people under the Law as heirs who, while still under guardianship, function much like servants awaiting the time appointed by the Father. But when the fullness of time came, God sent His Son to redeem those under the Law and bring them into His family through adoption. The discussion explores what Paul means by the “elemental things of the world,” the significance of Christ being born under the Law, and the remarkable privilege of believers receiving the Spirit and crying, “Abba, Father.” Michael and Zach then examine Paul’s warning that the Galatians’ return to religious observance as a basis for righteousness is not spiritual progress but a return to slavery. The episode ultimately asks why Christians would try to gain through religious performance what God has already freely given them in Christ: sonship, belonging, and an inheritance. The Unseen Realm 2.0 | Cosmic Vocabulary II: God’s Heavenly Court and the Watchers
2026/09/15
Season 3, Episode 5 In this episode, Michael and Zach are joined by Clay and continue their “Cosmic Vocabulary” mini-series by moving from individual spiritual beings to the structure of the unseen realm. They explore biblical terms such as “sons of God,” “host of heaven,” “holy ones,” and elohim, showing how Scripture uses several overlapping categories for members of God’s heavenly court. The discussion also examines “the satan” as a title in Job, the spiritual “princes” of Daniel 10, Paul’s language of rulers and authorities, and the debated identity of the twenty-four elders in Revelation. From there, the episode turns to one of the most controversial categories in the series: the Watchers. Michael and Zach distinguish the three biblical references in Daniel from the much larger Watcher tradition found in 1 Enoch, Jubilees, and the Dead Sea Scrolls, explaining what these ancient texts can—and cannot—tell us about Genesis 6, fallen angels, and later Jewish interpretation. Throughout the episode, they carefully separate canonical teaching from historical background and speculation, while showing why this vocabulary matters for understanding the Bible’s supernatural worldview. Galatians | The Purpose of the Law
2026/09/10
Season 3, Episode 4 In this episode, Michael and Zach continue their series through Galatians by asking a crucial question: if righteousness comes through faith in God’s promise, why did God give the Law? Working through Galatians 3:15–29, they examine Paul’s argument that the Mosaic Law could not cancel or modify the promise God had already made to Abraham centuries earlier. Instead, the Law served a temporary purpose because of sin—revealing transgression, guarding Israel, and preparing the way for Christ. The discussion also explores Paul’s description of the Law as a tutor or guardian, why the Law cannot give life, and what changes now that Christ has come. The episode concludes with Paul’s emphasis on sonship, union with Christ, and the remarkable truth that all who belong to Christ are Abraham’s descendants and heirs according to promise.
