Advertise on podcast: Nervous System Revolution For Artists

In this episode, Ruby Rose Fox explores why so many artists remain dysregulated despite spending their lives creating art. Drawing on the work of Peter Levine, she explains how somatic memory—trauma stored in the body without conscious recollection—can drive patterns of self-sabotage, overwork, and insatiable ambition.  Through personal stories and nervous system science, Ruby argues that many artists unconsciously mistake chaos for creativity and excitement for purpose. The solution isn't to stop making art—it's to stop hiding inside it.  The core lesson of the episode is simple but powerful: Learn to be neutral with the big moments. Success, failure, auditions, opportunities, and risks must become safe in the body. The goal isn't less passion—it's more capacity. When artists learn to regulate through life's highs and lows, they can finally build a life where their capacity matches their desire.  Key takeaway: Don't shrink your dreams to fit your nervous system. Train your nervous system to hold your dreams.  Support the show https://www.muscle-music.com/

In this episode, Ruby Rose Fox explores one of the most misunderstood forces in the artistic life: dopamine. Most people think dopamine is the pleasure molecule. It isn't. Dopamine is the seeking molecule. It is the neurochemical that gets us out of bed, drives us toward goals, fuels creativity, and convinces us to chase squirrels, songs, stages, lovers, audiences, and dreams.  For artists, this distinction changes everything. The same chemical that helps us write an album, audition for a role, launch a business, or prepare for a performance is also responsible for the crushing disappointment that often follows success. The post-show blues. The post-release crash. The strange emptiness after achieving something we've wanted for years. These experiences are not evidence that we failed. They are often evidence that dopamine is doing exactly what it evolved to do.  Ruby explores how dopamine intersects with nervous system regulation and why dopamine lows can often be mistaken for freeze states. Artists frequently assume that exhaustion, brain fog, self-doubt, and lack of motivation are signs of trauma activation when they may actually be experiencing a dopamine dip after intense excitement, novelty, or achievement. Understanding the difference is crucial because the solutions are entirely different.  Drawing on the work of Anna Lembke, the episode examines how modern life overwhelms the dopamine system through technology, sugar, social media, constant stimulation, and the endless pursuit of novelty. Artists are particularly vulnerable because their careers naturally expose them to extreme highs and lows. A standing ovation, a successful show, a viral post, or a major opportunity can create dramatic shifts in brain chemistry that require intentional recovery.  The conversation also explores addiction through the lens of the famous Rat Park experiments conducted by Bruce Alexander, suggesting that healthy environments, meaningful relationships, and social connection are among the strongest protections against dopamine-driven compulsions. Addiction is framed not simply as exposure to substances, but as a narrowing of life's sources of pleasure and meaning.  A central theme of the episode is the relationship between pleasure and pain. Ruby explains the "dopamine seesaw," where every significant pleasure creates a corresponding pain response designed to maintain equilibrium. The more intensely we pursue stimulation, the stronger the rebound effect can become. Understanding this process allows artists to stop interpreting normal post-performance crashes as personal failures and instead recognize them as biological realities.  The episode then introduces practical tools for working with dopamine rather than fighting it. These include:  Blue Resting and "Shmoo Days"  Dopamine fasting and self-binding  Embracing boredom  Walking without stimulation  Meditation  Limiting social media after performances  Strategic recovery periods following major artistic events Ruby also explores hormesis, the science of beneficial stress. Practices such as cold exposure, sauna use, exercise, and fasting are discussed as ways of intentionally engaging the pain side of the dopamine seesaw to restore balance, resilience, and motivation. Rather than chasing more pleasure, artists may often need healthy doses of challenge and discomfort.  Finally, the episode concludes with an unexpected tool: radical honesty. Truth-telling is presented not merely as an ethical choice but as a nervous system intervention. Honest relationships, honest performances, and honest self-reflection may be among the most powerful ways to stabilize the brain and reconnect with what matters. For performers especially, authenticity becomes both an artistic principle and a biological strategy.  Core Takeaway: Artists are not broken when they crash after success. They are often experiencing the natural consequences of a dopamine system doing exactly what it evolved to do. Mastery comes not from eliminating dopamine highs and lows, but from understanding them, recovering from them skillfully, and building a life where creativity is supported by regulation rather than driven by addiction.  Support the show https://www.muscle-music.com/

Podcast Episode Summary: Power, Artistry, and Nervous System Leadership In this episode, Ruby explores one of the most emotionally charged and misunderstood topics in the arts: power. Drawing from psychology, nervous system science, sociology, and the realities of creative life, she challenges the common belief that power is inherently corrupt or somehow incompatible with artistry.  Instead, power is revealed as something relational, fluid, and unavoidable. It exists in every rehearsal, collaboration, friendship, contract negotiation, audience interaction, and even in the conversations we have with ourselves. Artists often reject power out of fear of becoming selfish, controlling, or "selling out," but avoiding power doesn't eliminate it. It simply hands it to someone else.  The episode explores research showing that power doesn't automatically make people better or worse. Like adrenaline, it amplifies what is already present. This raises an important question for artists: if power eventually comes your way, what values and nervous system habits will guide how you use it?  Ruby distinguishes power from status, authority, confidence, and fame. Power is not something you possess permanently. It exists between people and changes according to context, relationships, trust, and mutual need. Through examples from performance, leadership, biology, and even a flock of ducks crossing a river, she illustrates how healthy hierarchies and benevolent leadership can help groups thrive.  Most importantly, the episode introduces the concept of nervous system leadership: the ability to regulate, connect, adapt, and help others find stability without domination or force. True power is not about controlling people. It is about creating trust, meaning, resonance, and movement toward a shared goal. For artists, this means using their voice, presence, and creativity not merely to gain influence, but to help others feel seen, connected, and more fully alive.  Ultimately, this episode argues that power is neither a crown nor a possession. It is a living relationship. When artists learn to engage with it consciously, they stop shrinking from leadership and begin shaping culture with integrity, courage, and connection Support the show https://www.muscle-music.com/

Podcast Summary: Nervous System Leadership for Artists In this episode, Ruby Rose Fox explores a radical idea that changes the entire meaning of performance: artists are not on stage to be loved, understood, or regulated by the audience. They are there to lead. Drawing from the principles of the Fox Method and nervous system science, Ruby reframes performers as “tuning forks” for the collective nervous system of the room. Stage fright, in this framework, often comes from unconsciously asking the audience to regulate you instead of stepping into the role of nervous system leadership.  The episode dives into how regulation, leadership, power dynamics, and healthy deference operate in performance, teaching, parenting, and creative collaboration. Ruby explores the difference between benevolent leadership and dominance hierarchies, why artists must care for their own bodies and minds if they want to lead others well, and how even discomfort and anxiety can be transformed into tools for connection and healing. This episode is ultimately about service, presence, and the profound shift that happens when performers stop asking, “Do they love me?” and begin asking, “How can I hold this room with love?”  Support the show https://www.muscle-music.com/

Podcast Summary: Superplay Free Chapter “Your Instrument Is You” In this free chapter of , introduces one of the core ideas behind the Fox Method: Your nervous system is not separate from your art.  It is the instrument through which all art moves. Using the evolution of phones as a metaphor, Ruby explains how human nervous system states evolved over time, from ancient survival responses to the uniquely human ability to imagine, roleplay, and create through what she calls “Superplay.”  A rotary phone becomes a metaphor for freeze and preservation mode: slow, ancient biological technology designed for survival, not complex modern creative demands. Mobile phones represent fight and flight responses, while smartphones symbolize connection, play, collaboration, and social engagement. Finally, Superplay is introduced as the newest “technology” of the human nervous system: the ability to imaginatively become other selves through art, storytelling, theater, music, and performance.  The chapter explores why artists often shame themselves for struggling creatively when, biologically, they may simply be operating from older survival states. Rather than seeing dysregulation as failure, Ruby reframes it as outdated nervous system technology attempting to solve modern problems.  A major insight of the episode is that healing and artistic freedom cannot happen through shame or bypassing. Humans regulate and dysregulate in predictable evolutionary sequences, like nesting dolls. Someone coming out of freeze cannot jump immediately into full safety and creativity. They must move through activation first. This becomes essential knowledge for performers, teachers, and anyone working with artists.  At its heart, this chapter is both compassionate and radical:  Artists are not broken.  They are often trying to create with nervous systems stuck in survival technology that was never designed for modern visibility, performance, or creative risk. And the goal is not to destroy the older parts of ourselves, but to understand them, respect them, and learn how to guide ourselves toward greater flexibility, connection, imagination, and freedom. The stage is not testing your talent. It is revealing your relationship with yourself under visibility. In this episode, Ruby Rose Fox explores why true presence is not about becoming fearless, flawless, or permanently regulated. It is about learning to remain connected to yourself when your voice shakes, your heart races, the room goes silent, or your nervous system predicts danger. This conversation dives into stage fright, shame, performance, Polyvagal Theory, and the sacred nature of being witnessed. Ruby unpacks why the nervous system is the artist’s primary instrument, why suppression eventually deadens art, and why the deepest freedom onstage comes from stopping the war against your own body. The stage was never asking you to become invincible. It was asking whether you could stay loving while being seen. Support the show https://www.muscle-music.com/

What if the thing making social media feel unbearable is not weakness, sensitivity, or “too muchness”… but a false story about who you are? In this deeply philosophical and nervous system-centered meditation, Ruby Rose Fox explores the hidden myth underneath modern anxiety: the belief that we are separate, isolated selves fighting for survival against the world. Through neuroscience, Polyvagal Theory, spirituality, biology, and the metaphor of music itself, Ruby reframes social media as one of the greatest nervous system challenges artists have ever faced. This episode is about learning how to post, create, and exist online without organizing your life around fear, rejection, comparison, or exile. Drawing from the Big Bang, neuroception, relational biology, and the idea that we are “the ocean, not the wave,” Ruby offers a radical reframe for artists who feel overwhelmed by visibility, criticism, or the pressure to perform online. This is a meditation on connection, embodiment, creativity, and remembering that you are not a lonely object trying to survive the internet. You are part of the larger song itself. For avoidant artists who feel at war with time itself. In this episode, Ruby Rose Fox explores avoidance not as laziness, but as the nervous system’s attempt to control time. Through Iain McGilchrist’s work, Buddhist wisdom, and one tiny practical tool, Ruby offers a powerful reframe: you are not behind. You are in time. Support the show https://www.muscle-music.com/

What if stage fright, creative paralysis, burnout, emotional numbness, and self-doubt weren’t character flaws… but nervous system states? In this powerful episode, Ruby Rose Fox offers a deeply human and radically practical exploration of “preservation mode,” the ancient freeze response that can silently hijack artists, performers, writers, and creators. Using vivid metaphors, neuroscience, humor, and hard-earned wisdom from the performing arts world, Ruby unpacks why so many artists feel trapped between longing to express themselves and feeling physiologically unable to move. She explores how the nervous system can confuse emotional overwhelm with actual danger, shutting down creativity, clarity, connection, and performance capacity in the process.  This episode also dives into:  The difference between true freeze states, dopamine crashes, exhaustion, and insulin crashes  Why artists often misdiagnose their own nervous system states  The hidden physiological cost of prolonged immobilization  How shame around freezing became culturally reinforced  Why great art often comes after suffering, not necessarily during it  The concept of “preservation mode stories,” the internal narratives that keep artists stuck  Why the goal is not to shame your nervous system, but to understand it At its core, this episode is about learning to recognize when your body is protecting you… even when that protection no longer serves your creative life. This is a free glimpse into Ruby Rose Fox’s audiobook SUPERPLAY: Your Instrument Is You, a groundbreaking exploration of nervous system training for artists, performers, creators, and highly sensitive humans. Through storytelling, neuroscience, performance theory, and practical tools, SUPERPLAY reframes the artist not as “broken,” but as someone working with the most complex instrument on earth: the human nervous system. Ruby Rose Fox uses cherry tomato gardening as a metaphor for the artistic nervous system. What starts as a story about pruning tomato “suckers” becomes a powerful exploration of distraction, avoidance, overcommitment, and the exhausting modern pressure to “do it all.” Drawing from neuroscience, performance psychology, and MuscleMusic philosophy, Ruby explores how artists often become tangled “bushes” of unfinished ideas, identities, and side projects instead of directing energy toward meaningful creative fruit. The episode asks a confronting question: Are you truly multi-passionate… or is your nervous system avoiding commitment because commitment risks failure? The conversation also dives into validation addiction, arguing that artists were never meant to psychologically consume their own art through applause, comments, or external approval. The fruit is for the world. The nourishment must come from somewhere deeper: community, embodiment, rest, support, and connection. Part comedy, part philosophy, part nervous system intervention, this episode is a call for artists to stop becoming factories of self-consumption and start growing something real.  Support the show https://www.muscle-music.com/

In this episode, Ruby Rose Fox explores one of the most painful and confusing experiences many artists face: Why can someone feel completely alive, magnetic, fearless, and free on stage… yet deeply overwhelmed, avoidant, lonely, or emotionally fractured in ordinary life? Through the lens of the MuscleMusic method, Ruby introduces the difference between Superplay and Connect Mode, explaining how performance, imagination, ritual, and artistic transcendence are profoundly different nervous system states than everyday human intimacy and relational connection. This episode examines why extraordinary performers can still struggle in relationships, why charisma and transcendence do not automatically equal emotional maturity, and why many artists have been taught to confuse altered states with healing. Ruby unpacks the hidden nervous system realities beneath stage fright, performance freedom, attachment wounds, social exhaustion, spiritual bypassing, and artistic identity, while offering a deeply compassionate framework for understanding the gap between artistic capacity and relational capacity. This conversation is for artists, performers, teachers, creatives, and sensitive people who have ever wondered: “How can I feel so powerful in performance and still struggle so much in life?” A meditation on art, nervous systems, transcendence, childhood, connection, and the slow sacred work of learning how to remain present as yourself. There is a particular kind of death that happens to artists. Not the cinematic kind with violins and roses and everyone watching you dramatically suffer. The quieter kind. The kind that happens when your nervous system realizes the life you built no longer fits the life trying to emerge. In this episode, Ruby Rose Fox explores the terrifying and holy process of artistic rebirth: leaving behind identities, dreams, careers, and versions of yourself that once kept you alive, but no longer feel true. From acting to chaplaincy to music to writing, Ruby shares the hidden grief of transformation, the nervous system cost of expansion, and why so many artists mistake exhaustion for devotion. This conversation dives into nervous system regulation, survival identities, artistic burnout, masking, neurodivergence, and the hidden systems that profit from depleted creatives. Most importantly, it asks a radical question: What if the collapse isn’t failure?  What if it’s the sound of the cage opening? A deeply compassionate episode for artists, performers, creatives, and anyone standing at the edge of becoming someone new.  Support the show https://www.muscle-music.com/

Sit for 30 min. Do imperfectly.  Before strategy. Before ambition. Before fixing or proving anything— This episode begins by helping your nervous system arrive. Ruby guides you beneath the surface of what you’re creating and into a slower, more honest inquiry: What is actually driving this? Not the polished answer—but the felt one. The one that lives in the body. Rather than pushing fear away, this episode invites you to create safety for it. When fear is allowed to be seen instead of overridden, the nervous system softens—and something truer becomes accessible. Not a hustle. Not a persona. But a calling that doesn’t require force to exist. Through presence, listening, and embodied attention, you’re guided toward unconditional love for what you’re here to offer—before it succeeds, before it’s understood, before it’s approved of. This is not about becoming someone new. It’s about letting pressure drop so what’s already here can come forward. Support the show https://www.muscle-music.com/

What if your art isn’t something you chase, but something that emerges when you stop running? What if your nervous system isn’t a barrier to your brilliance—but the very stage it’s meant to unfold on? Through poetic storytelling, deep nervous system wisdom, and the concept of “Superplay,” Ruby challenges the myth of the tortured artist, dismantles the delusion of external validation, and offers a path back to your true source of power: presence.
