In May of 1976, a Colorado geologist gets a bizarre phone call from someone asking him to bring a specialized work truck to a remote part of Wyoming. Suspicious of the call, he brings it to his boss, who confirms that the person doesn't work for the company and the request is fake. Less than a week later, his legitimate work takes him to that same area of Wyoming, and he disappears. The months ahead would bring a series of ominous clues about what may have happened to him, but fifty years later, he has never been found. In the summer of 1974, two teenage cousins placed a classified ad offering their babysitting services. A man responded saying he was looking for someone to babysit his five-year-old son. When the younger girl’s parents weren’t comfortable with her traveling for the job, he moved on to her 14-year-old cousin, Margaret Fox. Over the next several days, plans were made, canceled, and eventually rescheduled for a Monday morning. That morning, Margaret boarded a bus to a nearby town where she was supposed to meet the man’s wife and be brought back to their home.Margaret never came home.When her father called the number the man had given them, he discovered it went to a payphone outside of a grocery store. Then, in the days after Margaret disappeared, her family received a ransom demand, and police were able to record part of the caller’s voice. That recording still exists today. More than 50 years later, Margaret has never been found. No one knows who the man was who arranged that babysitting job, whether the family he described even existed, or who was behind the ransom call that came after she disappeared. On Friday the 13th of September 2002, a Georgia man vanished without a trace. Bill Farrer’s vehicle and fishing supplies were found abandoned at a quiet creek where he often went fishing. At first, it seemed like Bill may have suffered some kind of accident and drowned. But after an extremely thorough search of the shallow creek turned up nothing, that explanation started to seem less likely. As the hours passed, Bill’s close-knit family started thinking back on some of the things that had happened in the years and months leading up to his disappearance. There were questions about whether Bill had stumbled into something he shouldn’t have, and just months earlier, he had been attacked by two men at that very same creek. A young family takes a spontaneous camping trip over Labor Day weekend in 1974. On Sunday morning, everything at their campsite looks normal. There are things from breakfast on the picnic table, a dishpan filled with water, children’s belongings, and a carton of milk bought just hours earlier. But by that evening, the entire family is gone. Their truck is still parked nearby. The keys, a wallet, and a purse have all been left behind. It looks like they stepped away from the campsite expecting to come right back. The family was camping near Copper, Oregon, a tiny community within the Siskiyou National Forest that has since been inundated and buried beneath Applegate Lake. Just after Thanksgiving in 1987, a seven-year-old boy was traveling home to California with his family after spending the holiday in Las Vegas. Heavy traffic led the family to stop at a hotel and casino along the way. The hotel had an arcade, and his family set him up with a game while they waited. They believed he would be safe there. But shortly before they were ready to leave, he was gone. Witnesses would later report seeing the boy leave the arcade hand-in-hand with an unknown man. An intensive search continued for weeks before ending with the worst possible outcome. In the years that followed, the case would take a complicated path toward justice. But nearly four decades later, no one has ever been held responsible. On a May evening in 1979, an eighteen-year-old woman went car shopping with her dad. Afterward, he dropped her off at her apartment, and the two went through their usual routine. She went inside first, did a quick safety walk-through, and then came back outside to let her father know everything was okay and he was good to head home. It would be the last time he saw his daughter. The next morning, her roommate returned to the apartment to pick her up for work. Instead, she found her roommate missing and a disturbing scene left behind. Months would pass before a pair of men doing target practice made a discovery that ended any remaining hope that she might still be out there somewhere. In the decades since, the investigation has gone down a number of different paths, including false confessions and possible connections to other murders in the area. But when you strip all of that away and go back to the earliest days of the investigation, there are details that seem much more significant with the benefit of hindsight. In August 2002, thirty-one-year-old nurse Audrey Herron finished her shift, climbed into her Jeep Grand Cherokee, and began the 13-mile drive home on a rainy, foggy evening. She never arrived. From that night forward, neither Audrey nor her Jeep has ever been found. Some believe she was involved in a crash and that both she and her vehicle remain hidden somewhere within the region's waterways or rugged terrain despite years of extensive searches. On an April afternoon in 1994, a fifteen year old Florida girl gets off her school bus at the entrance to the dirt road leading to her home. From there, she still had about a quarter mile to walk. The narrow road cut through thick Florida brush, with dense vegetation pressing in on both sides and tree branches overhead creating an almost continuous canopy. It was a walk she knew well and one that usually took only about five minutes. But this time, she never made it home. Later that same afternoon, after she was reported missing, a sheriff's helicopter found her body not far from where she had gotten off the bus. Investigators eventually arrested a suspect, but before the case could ever go to trial, the case against him unraveled. Today, 32 years later, detectives are still trying to figure out who killed her so close to home.
