Description
Welcome to "Sunday Reverb," a podcast dedicated to deepening your relationship with God through the worship and teachings from Topeka Baptist Church. Join me, Pastor Joe, and my wife, Shelli as we revisit a different song from our latest worship set, connecting Scripture and its application to our daily lives. New episodes are available every Tuesday morning at 5:00 CST. Set aside a few moments with us (and occasionally special guests from our team) for a reflection on the biblical truths in the worship songs we sing.

All Sufficient Merit
2026/09/29
In this week's episode, Joe and Shelli talk about the new Dollar General in town, plug a few church podcasts, and share the gratitude app their family has been using. They also look back on Sunday night's worship night, which felt like singing around a campfire with about 120 friends.
Then they dig into "All Sufficient Merit" by Shane & Shane, which TBC sang during communion Sunday morning, alongside Pastor Mark's sermon from Mark 9. It comes down to three things: we can't, but Jesus did; disappointing Him doesn't mean He sends us away; and even when our faith is shaky, our Savior isn't. It's His merit, not ours, and that's worth being thankful for.
Repentance - with Steve Tucker
2026/09/22
In today's episode, Joe and Shelli are joined by longtime friend, pastor, and fellow podcaster Steve Tucker. They set out to talk about something entirely different, but the conversation gravitated toward true repentance, confession, and forgiveness. Along the way, they touch on music being used as manipulation during altar calls, confession and prayer, addiction and the sins that so easily beset us, and the simplicity of the gospel.
Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven
2026/09/15
This week Joe and Shelli look at the hymn "Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven," written by Henry Lyte and rooted straight in Psalm 103. We talk through what it means to preach truth to your own soul, why David makes a point of naming God's specific benefits instead of just feeling vaguely thankful, and how one 19th-century hymn writer turned a psalm into a song the church is still singing today.
How God Speaks (London Camp 2)
2026/09/01
Joe and Shelli record on the way home from London with special guests Chad and Debbie Issinghoff. On this episode, each of them shares how God has spoken to them in their life and reflect on the teen camp in London.

The Solid Rock
2026/08/18
"On Christ, the Solid Rock, I Stand" — The Story Behind a Hymn That Held Up a Dying Woman's Faith
This week Joe and Shelli dig into "The Solid Rock," one of the sturdiest hymns ever written. Joe shares the story of Edward Mote — a carpenter who scribbled the chorus on his way to work, finished the verses that same day, and ended up giving them to a dying woman named Sister King because her family couldn't find their hymnbook. Rooted in 1 Corinthians 3:11, Joe and Shelli talk through what it means to stand on a foundation that doesn't move — even when everything around you does.
He Giveth More Grace
2026/08/11
This week, Joe & Shelli dig into the hymn "He Giveth More Grace" by Annie Johnson Flint — a woman who wrote some of the most comforting words in hymnody from the middle of debilitating physical suffering. They talk about what it looks like for God's grace to not just meet a need, but exceed it.
Then they connect it to Pastor Mark Doss's sermon "Similar Miracle; Different Lessons" (Mark 8:1–10), walking through what the feeding of the 4,000 teaches us about who Jesus is: compassionate, patient with our forgetfulness, unlimited in power, and able to truly satisfy.
Build My Life
2026/08/04
This week on Sunday Reverb, we're joined by David Wingerson, drummer for the TBC worship band, as we dig into "Build My Life" by Pat Barrett. David shares his testimony of coming to Jesus as a student at Washburn, the struggles he walked through last year, and how he found his way back to his first love in Christ — anchored in Revelation 2:4-5. We also tie in Pastor Mark Doss's sermon "A Test of Compassion" (Mark 7:31-37) as we talk about what it looks like to remember, repent, and return.
Grace Greater Than Our Sin
2026/07/28
This week Joe and Shelli dig into the beloved hymn "Grace Greater Than Our Sin," with special guest Pastor Mark Doss of Topeka Baptist Church joining them once again. They trace the story behind the hymn — Julia H. Johnston's remarkable life and Daniel Towner's inspiration for the tune — before diving into how the song connects with Pastor Mark's recent message, "Mistakes We Make When Talking to God," from the story of the Syrophoenician woman in Mark 7.
Together they walk through the ways we shrink back from God in prayer — timidity, impatience with silence, listening to the wrong voices, pride, and giving up too soon — and how each one gets answered by the same truth: God's grace is greater than all of it. Whether you're bold in prayer or hesitant to even start, this episode is an invitation to stop trying to earn what's already being freely offered.
Because of Your Love
2026/07/21
This week, Joe and Shelli dig into "Because of Your Love" by Paul Baloche, from the album A Greater Song — a longtime favorite that's been part of their worship for years. After some fun husband-and-wife banter to kick things off, they explore what it really means that we're forgiven, made clean, and set free — all because of God's love, not our own effort. A good, honest conversation about forgiveness, transformation, and what it looks like to be forever changed by grace.
Washed
2026/07/14
Joe's heading out to help at kids camp this week — but the song is worth pausing on. "Washed" by Elevation Rhythm is a brand new one the church sang on Sunday, and it's all gospel: washed in the water, washed in the blood, as good as new. Joe and Shelli anchor it in 1 Corinthians 6:11 — "but you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified" — and walk through three quick truths: you've actually been made clean, it's not what you've done but what He's done, and Jesus didn't just take your sin, He took your shame. If you've ever struggled to feel as forgiven as you actually are, this short episode is a good reminder of who you are in Christ. Hallelujah, here we come.
Justin Rhoades Missionary to London
2026/07/07
This week Joe welcomes a special guest close to the Topeka Baptist family — Justin Rhoades, missionary to London and son of our own Jeff and Paula Rhoades. Justin and his wife Rachel have spent years planting their lives in one of the most secular cities on earth, and this episode is a real missionary update: how their church has grown through revitalization, the people God has raised up around them, the camps and ministries reaching kids and teens, and the honest challenges of living by faith on the mission field. Tied to Justin's Sunday message on the blessings of missions, Joe and Justin share how you can be praying for the Rhoades family and their church family in London. If you've ever wondered what it actually looks like to follow God across the world, this one will encourage you.

Mission Trip to El Salvador
2026/06/30
This week is a special one. Joe and Shelli joined a team of 18 traveling to San Salvador, El Salvador, to share the love of Jesus and the Good News of salvation with everyone they could reach. In this episode, you'll hear from each member of the team — the moments that moved them, the highlights they'll never forget, and the challenges they faced along the way.
Midway through, we sit down with Steve Kern, director of Good News in Action, who has been ministering alongside his wife Pam in El Salvador for 41 years. His perspective is one you won't want to miss.
It's a longer episode than usual, but every minute of these conversations is worth it. Pull up a chair and come along with us.
I Will Follow
2026/06/23
Joe's flying solo this week — Shelli's off the mic as the two of them get ready to leave for a missions trip to El Salvador. So this is a quick one, but maybe the most fitting song he could leave you with: "I Will Follow" by Chris Tomlin, led in worship by Molly Cole. Anchored in Jesus' words in Luke 9 — deny yourself, take up your cross daily, follow Me — Joe walks through a three-point devotion on what it actually means to follow: letting Jesus lead, counting the daily cost, and discovering that what you lose for His sake you gain back a hundredfold. With a word on missions, a Father's Day note for the dads, and an encouraging send-off for whatever step you're facing this week. Wherever He's leading you — go. You're not walking into the unknown. You're walking behind the One who already knows the way.
No One Ever Cared for Me Like Jesus
2026/06/16
This week Joe sits down with a special guest — Dr. Kyle Dotson — to talk about one of the most personal hymns ever written. "No One Ever Cared for Me Like Jesus" wasn't born in a church pew on a good Sunday. It came from a man named Charles Weigle who stood on a pier in Florida, abandoned and broken, ready to end it all — and heard God say "Charlie, I care for you." Kyle brings his perspective as a follower of Larry Crabb's work on why human love always has a ceiling, and why that points us straight to the only One who loves without limit. If you've ever felt let down by the people who were supposed to show up for you — this episode is for you. Shelli's out this week, but the conversation is anything but quiet.
