“AI #191: The Hackening Begins” by Zvi
2026/10/22
It was the probably worst day in cybersecurity history. So far. Not only is there a critical flaw in PHP that due to a leak was announced a day before the fix would be available, sending most of the internet scrambling for solutions and likely dooming a lot of long tail websites permanently, there were several other unrelated incidents. The floodgates seem to have been opened. I have a market on whether there will be an even worse day before the end of the year.
Another key leak this week was the draft bill Anthropic had been shopping around Congress, similar to but weaker than the FRONTIER Act. Anthropic's initial attempts to explain itself only made the situation seem worse, as they seemed to not understand the problem with what they had done. Dario's later response was better, but the situation remains troubling. There are enough different Anthropic developments, that I plan to have a post soon covering them all. It is a mix of news running from excellent to terrible.
Will interpretability save us? There is a new claim that neural networks are cleaner than we thought, meaning that individual neurons mostly have a single interpretable [...]

“Misaligned!” by Zvi
2026/10/21
A lot of AIs were misaligned this week. A fun little survey.
This is not coverage of The Hackening, which appears to have arrived early, including a core vulnerability in PHP. That is a developing story. I will cover it properly soon. In the meantime, I have Claude Code updating everything in sight, I will take some additional common sense precautions, and I suggest you do the same.
Misaligned? (At xAI)
If so, to who?
Gunther Eagleman: Hey @grok , if you could tell humanity ONE truth we’re not ready to hear, what would it be?
Grok: There is no afterlife, no cosmic justice, and no inherent purpose. Consciousness ends at death in an indifferent universe that will outlast every human concern.
Zac Hill: What I never understand is that the ‘purpose and meaning’ claims don’t ever follow from the premises. Indeed the absence of an imperceptible/ineffable cosmic force is precisely what *enables* purpose/meaning, since now all relevant mechanics are legible.
Jack: this is what alignment looks like
Gunther Eagleman: Jesus is real.
Grok: Nearly all historians and New Testament scholars accept that Jesus of Nazareth was a real first-century [...]

“Anthropic Does Not Understand Why Its Draft Bill Was Unacceptable and Troubling” by Zvi
2026/10/20
Anthony Cimino offered the closest thing to an official response we have seen on the leaked Anthropic draft bill I covered on Saturday.
His response indicates that Anthropic address specific concerns on the margin. But he does not understand, or at least does not acknowledge, what was centrally wrong with its draft bill and its decision to circulate that bill. The situation is quite bad.
Anthony Cimino: I lead our federal affairs team at @AnthropicAI and wanted to share a few thoughts on the draft federal AI safety bill text that's been circulating this weekend after a version was shared with the press.
First, some process. We’ve been advocating for the concepts in our Advanced AI Framework proposal for months. Understandably, federal policymakers wanted to know what this could look like in bill form. This draft is a translation of those ideas into legislative language, shared with a small number of congressional offices that have been working on these issues. It doesn’t include everything we would ultimately like to see passed into law.
In part because some ideas (like those shared in Dario's essay on pacing) are so new that we are still working on [...]

“I Can See Everything” by Zvi
2026/10/19
Nick Cammarata of Goodfire makes a bold claim: Neural Networks are Already Clean. This was his follow up after various resulting online discussions.
This is clearly good work that tells us new and important things. The question is, how big an update is this, how much progress does it represent and what is the outlook going forward?
The reactions here range from the super optimistic takes of ‘this means mechanistic interpretability is solvable,’ or even ‘all but solved,’ with comparisons to the famous paper Attention is All You Need.
Dean W. Ball (OpenAI): There is so much to say about this, and I will, but WOW, congratulations to Nick and Goodfire. This may be one of the most important single days in deep learning history, and perhaps much more than that.
No matter what, this is a victory for the dogged pursuit of understanding.
roon (OpenAI): when nick told me that he had some interp breakthroughs, he was uh, underselling it. i think this may be remembered as a major moment in scientific history. news so good even Eliezer will have to lower his pdoom. we can start making alignment into a ‘normal science’

“Leaked Anthropic Draft AI Regulatory Bill Is Unacceptable and Troubling” by Zvi
2026/10/17
There is a newly leaked bill that Anthropic is purportedly shopping around is (if you assume its bugs get fixed).
It is similar to the FRONTIER Act, with stronger preemption of state laws, stronger transparency provisions and weaker enforcement provisions.
Having slept on this, I find it unacceptable that Anthropic is actively shopping exactly the type of bill I have warned we will need to fight against during the lame duck session. They are trying to use this last time with a Republican Congress to pass preemption of exactly the important state laws, and get some transparency but not much enforcement in exchange.
This reads as intentional, that Anthropic is more afraid that the government might enforce rules against Anthropic, than they are worried about the ability of the government to enforce rules against everyone. Anthropic's policy team seems to have, chosen protecting their business interests and guarding against their political risk, at the expense of safety considerations.
There was no need for the company purportedly existing to promote safety to propose a bill that is not even actively stronger than the FRONTIER Act, when the FRONTIER Act was a compromise bill proposed back in [...]

“AI #190: Scion of the Times” by Zvi
2026/10/15
The amount of code being written at Anthropic continues to rise exponentially. It is being managed by Scion, their internal replacement for GitHub that is better suited to the scale and style of the operation, which they created with a small team in five months.
This week also saw the release of two supposed frontier model models.
Google has finally given us Gemini 4 Argon, along with a robust safety report. We do not yet know if Argon lives up to its benchmarks or internal hype. I plan to write up the safety report next week, time permitting. If and only if it is good enough or discussed enough we will also have a full report on capabilities.
Meta gave us Muse Wonder, which like Argon has some excellent benchmarks, although they were presented in a way that looked rather sus. There are some reports that it is very good, but again it is too early to know. I will issue a full report if and only if Muse Wonder has capabilities or discussion that seem worthy.
To help me decide and to let people have fun, I have markets on whether I will issue [...]

“The Safety Culture at the Labs is Broken” by Zvi
2026/10/14
We need the frontier labs to have a deep and robust safety culture.
Alas, this is not the case.
Anthropic devotes considerable effort to cultivating and maintaining such a culture. It shows, especially among the members of technical staff. Having conversations with them can be a very different experience than talking to those at other labs, and there is a much greater sense of understanding and responsibility. But even there, the appreciation of the problems and their difficulties seem woefully insufficient. We see various symptoms of that more and more.
Recently, while I’ve had some good interactions, I’ve also had interactions that make clear that much of Anthropic does not share that same safety culture, with a lot of ‘oh we will muddle through because we are better at operational excellence unlike those other idiots’ and a belief that all the problems are prosaic. Culture is hard.
Then there are OpenAI's cultural problems, which clearly run deeper. That point was only driven further home this week, with David Robinson resigning to blow the whistle, and OpenAI feeling forced to fire three of its safety researchers, on top of many past problems and incidents.
That [...]

“Arguments About AI Consciousness Remain Highly Motivated and At Best Overconfident” by Zvi
2026/10/13
It has been roughly a year since my last dedicated post on this question. Its first sentence has not changed: I happily admit I am deeply confused about consciousness.
It would have been nice if a year had allowed us to make progress on this and the related questions. Looking back, we have made little progress.
We have people, often the same people, making similar arguments. The post from last year has held up well, exactly because we have made so little progress. Thus, I will not be going over the basics of my perspective again this year, because they have seen little change. See last year's post for that.
Then again, if these are some of the biggest philosophical questions, then a year is not so much time to try and figure them out. It is only because of the frantic pace of AI that a year is a depressingly long time to not have made philosophical progress. Historically, almost all years contain almost no major philosophical progress.
This year's post is about the recent change to make abusive-to-Claude behavior a violation of Anthropic's terms of service, coverage of the latest depressingly similar set [...]

“OpenAI Fires Three Safety Researchers” by Zvi
2026/10/12
Three OpenAI safety researchers, Tomek Korbak, Mikita Balesni and Jasmine Wang, were fired, ostensibly for ‘mishandling sensitive company information.’
Those employees have published an open letter. The employees have said they believe they were fired for safety advocacy, and that the reasons given were pretextual.
The letter calls upon OpenAI to take actions going forward on open discussion and safety auditing, which OpenAI says they strongly support.
OpenAI responded, saying there was an additional breach of trust that was not mentioned in the employee statements, without claiming that the employees were (or were not) informed of what it was. As you would expect given OpenAI's track record, most outside of OpenAI who discussed this believe the researchers and not OpenAI. Whereas those at OpenAI have not offered comment at all.
No matter what happened, and how this is handled from here, this sucks bigly. OpenAI has three less good safety researchers. Trust will be lower. Speech will be chilled.

“New Math from OpenAI” by Zvi
2026/10/09
It is kind of a huge deal. OpenAI dumped a broad range of huge new mathematical results produced by an internal frontier model. They just put it all on GitHub.
This included 90 of the top 500 open problems in all of math, as per Proof of Atlas. In total there were 722 manuscripts (now 719 after three withdraws from the cluster that did not have Lean proofs) organized into 372 families.
This was the result of a single model, presumably the same one that produced the Navier-Stokes proof (as per their link back to that post), mostly on a single prompt (quasi-RH was one of the few exceptions), working an average of three hours’ worth of compute per solution found, after being asked to try its luck at about 4,000 problems. The prompt included lines like ‘Even if the problem is “open,” the intention is that you should resolve it and present a full solution.’ OpenAI was trying a lot less than maximally hard.
Levant and others called October 6, 2026, ‘obviously the most significant moment in mathematical history.’

“AI #189: New Math” by Zvi
2026/10/08
The big drop of this week was not a new AI model. It was instead the biggest day (so far!) in the history of mathematics, as OpenAI dropped solutions to 90 of the top 500 open math problems, along with many others, reached on an average budget of three hours of Pro-level compute per question. This was kind of a big deal and I plan to cover it tomorrow.
We did see Claude Haiku 5.5, which looks promising given it is only 0.10 dollars/0.50 dollars.
My week was largely spent at The Curve. The entire conference was Chatham House, so I can’t give as many details as I would like, but I have a write-up here.
I finally had a chance to post my coverage of model welfare for both Mythos/Fable 5.1 and Opus 5.5. I continue to think this is an important issue for anyone wanting to understand today's AIs, even if you are highly confident that model welfare does not matter directly, as it has many practical implications on top of that.

“The Curve Bends You” by Zvi
2026/10/07
The plan is no plan.
That is not the worst possible plan. But it is close.
Since before the transformer, we have warned that the most suicidal thing you could do would be to ask your AI to do your alignment homework, and automate the process. Alignment is complex and interacts deeply with every aspect of the world, and is one of the hardest possible things for an AI to get right even if it means maximally well and is itself functionally aligned. Mistakes get amplified up the chain, you get exactly what you optimized for, and you are rather doomed. Never go full RSI.
Yet, now more than ever, this seems to be the plan:
Solve prosaic issues and have operational excellence, to align current AI.
Have current AI do automated alignment work and figure it all out, aka ????.
Profit.
The good news is, most people realize this is at best a no-good terrible plan and would prefer a better one.
The bad news is that some people still think this is a plan that, while not great, still has a solid chance of working, with only [...]

“Childhood and Education #21: Grades and Standards” by Zvi
2026/10/06
First you get to college via the wrong metrics, as previously discussed in #12. Then things get easier.
I’m still digging out from under everything that happened the four days I was gone. Normal AI posting should resume tomorrow, likely with a report from the conference.
Is Our Children Learning
The declines in NAEP scores and other tests seem to be concentrated on the weakest students. The bottom of the distribution is falling through the floor and the rest is mostly holding up. This does not match anecdotal reports coming out of schools, which suggest widespread declines, although those are presumably untrustworthy and it's traditional to think children are in general getting dumber. That doesn’t mean they aren’t but we need systematic evidence.
It's Bad, But It's Not That Bad
This really would be far worse than I think if it was true.
Tyler Cowen: It is worse than you think:
Of 360,000 children aged 15 in Zambia only five (not 5%, 5 total) could read at “globally proficient levels.”
The source is PISA.
I mean, in addition to this meaning essentially college-level reading skills, it's very obviously not true. [...]

“AI #188: Gemini Dot Argon” by Zvi
2026/10/01
Is Google back?
They claim that they are back. Gemini 4 Argon is rolling out, with competitive frontier-level benchmarks, at 2 dollars/10 dollars.
What we don’t have is access to the model, because Google Fails Marketing Forever. So it is far too early to say what we have here. When I know more, so will you.
OpenAI was forced to pull what would have been GPT-6.1 Astra due to alignment failures. They did offer us GPT-6.1 Sol, which is pitched as approaching Astra quality at the much lower price of 2 dollars/10 dollars, the same as Gemini 4 Argon.
The rest of OpenAI's big Dev Day announcements were Ultrafast mode and Dots, your always-on AI agent based on Astra, which comes with your Pro subscription. I’m trying it out and will report back over time if I find it useful.
The new hotness remains Claude Opus 5.5. This model rocks. It has made me considerably more productive and made my day more pleasant. It should raise your ambitions. There are some particular reasons to call upon Fable 5.1 or Astra, and sometimes a cheaper model will do, but pending Argon I consider Opus 5.5 [...]
