You are using AI Wrong! Here's an actually useful framework for SMEs. [TBS 65 ft Voltade]
2026/10/20
Is your SME actually using AI… Or are you just adding more AI tools?
The real opportunity may be much less flashy.
Think WhatsApp enquiries, emails, quotations, appointments, repetitive admin and all the small workflows your team keeps doing manually.
In TFC Business Show 65, Leonard Loo, Co-Founder & CEO of Voltade, breaks down how SMEs can move beyond simply chatting with AI and start getting it to actually do work inside the business.
Because adopting AI does not mean automating everything overnight. The more useful question is: which repetitive processes are slowing your team down, and which ones can already be handed over?
For business owners, this could mean less time spent coordinating routine work — and more time focused on customers, growth and decisions that still need a human.
If AI could take one repetitive workflow off your team tomorrow, what would you hand over first?
Watch the full conversation on YouTube.

How Two SG Founders Beat Korean Skincare Giants Without Big-Brand Money [TBS 64]
2026/10/06
A customer watched her live stream for SIX months before buying anything. The reason? "You're not someone that fly by night."
Dawn sits down with two homegrown Singapore care brand founders - to break down how small local players actually win in a market dominated by Korean giants and Western imports.
It's not bigger ad budgets. It's not paid magazine awards (those are scams - they tell you why). It's the founder showing up, every day, on TikTok Shop, on Telegram, at Artbox booths, until the trust compounds into customers who buy 38 times instead of once.
If you're building a brand in a saturated category, skincare, F&B, fashion, anything, the playbook is in here.

The Biggest IP Mistake: Treating It Like a Checklist [TBS 63 ft IP for Growth Awards]
2026/09/22
Three companies, three very different IP playbooks. A top-10 global dairy brand patents individual probiotic strains and prints the story on packaging to justify a premium. A food-traceability startup patents its core process but keeps its actual signature method a trade secret, refreshed yearly to catch counterfeits. A local kopi-brewing startup can't patent its process at all, so recipe, hardware tweaks and a registered trademark do the heavy lifting instead.
Despite the size gap, the panel lands on the same warning: IP gets treated as a box to tick, filed and forgotten, instead of an asset that needs an active go-to-market plan. Getting granted is the easy part. Figuring out whether that patent should drive pricing, unlock licensing revenue, or protect a supply chain is the part founders skip.
For anyone weighing whether to patent, trademark, or just keep quiet about how something is made, the panel's breakdown of costs, timelines and trade-offs is a useful gut check.
Guests:
Dr Eugene Ho, Director of Research and Intellectual Property, Inner Mongolia Mengniu DairyLoh Jian Yuan, Chief Operating Officer, Kopi Near Me Pte LtdAlrik Tan, Co-Chief Executive Officer and Chief Scientific Officer, Natural Trace Private LimitedWhat's currently sitting in a business unprotected: is it because it's not worth protecting, or because no one's gotten around to it?

Why Singapore SMEs Should Invest in Sabah, According to Its New Investment Chief [TBS 62, Sponsored by STTOS]
2026/09/08
Every Singapore business that outgrows Singapore looks north. Most stop at Johor. It's close, it's familiar, and anything further feels like a different order of decision. Sabah is three hours away and does not make the shortlist.
Closing that gap is now Kevin George Ukang's job. Five months into running Invest Sabah, after sixteen years inside a regional development authority, his pitch to Singapore SMEs is narrower than you'd expect: tourism, logistics and food processing, with cold chain the loudest gap of the three.
Hotels in Kundasang sell out while travellers are still looking for beds. Cold storage runs short in a state built on perishables. Foreign investors can hold full equity, though native title land stays off the table. None of that makes Sabah easy. It makes it early.
If you've been weighing where to grow next, has Sabah ever made your list, and what would put it there?
Explore STTOS's trade and investment support and watch the full episode on YouTube for the key insights.

Manhattan Fish Market’s New Franchise Model Explained [TBS 61 ft Manhattan Fish Market]
2026/08/11
Manhattan Fish Market is setting its sights on a comeback by returning to what made the brand memorable in the first place: familiar flavours, accessible seafood and a distinctly Malaysian identity.
At Franchise International Malaysia 2026, CEO Deric Yeo and COO Sheikh Imran Iskandar shared how the home-grown halal seafood chain is rediscovering its original DNA while adapting to changing consumer habits. That means bringing back much-loved recipes, introducing Malaysian-inspired flavours and expanding through smaller kiosk and shop-in-shop formats designed for delivery, convenience and lower franchise entry costs.
The brand, which once operated across 16 countries, still maintains a presence in markets including Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, the Maldives, Myanmar and Jordan. Its strategy is clear: strengthen the Malaysian market first, prove the model, then grow into surrounding regions.
For aspiring franchisees, the lesson is equally important. International expansion is not about entering every market at once. Build one successful foothold, understand local demand and let strong performance create opportunities in neighbouring countries. Manhattan Fish Market’s next chapter is about nostalgia, reinvention and disciplined growth, without losing what customers already love.

Can You Make Money From an Anytime Fitness Franchise? [TBS 60 ft Anytime Fitness]
2026/08/04
From one gym in 2017 to 16 clubs today, Jaya’s Anytime Fitness journey shows what disciplined reinvestment can achieve.
Instead of taking profits out, he channelled earnings from each successful outlet into the next. That steady approach helped him scale across the Klang Valley while continuing to run other businesses. Meanwhile, Anytime Fitness Malaysia has grown from just 17 gyms in 2017 to around 130 in 2026, with even faster expansion planned.
Why Malaysia? Lower rental, construction and operating costs make the market attractive, while demand for accessible fitness, personal training and community-focused gyms continues to rise. However, the opportunity comes with serious commitments: opening a club may require roughly RM1.6 million to RM1.8 million, monthly operating costs can reach RM80,000 to RM90,000, and returns may take two to three years.
The lesson is simple: franchising is not passive from day one. Success still requires industry knowledge, careful site selection, strong people management and the discipline to follow a proven system, especially during the demanding early stages of the business.

Is Your Franchise Actually Illegal? [TBS 59 ft Damien Yeo]
2026/07/28
Franchising can be one of the fastest ways to grow a business, but it can also become one of the costliest mistakes if you overlook the legal requirements.
In this episode of The Financial Coconut Business Show, franchise lawyer and registered franchise consultant Damien Yeo unpacks the legal framework behind Malaysia's Franchise Act 1998 and explains why many businesses unknowingly cross the line from licensing into franchising. Simply calling your business a "licence" does not mean the law will see it that way.
Damien breaks down the four legal elements that define a franchise, why registration matters, and the serious consequences businesses may face if they operate without complying with the law. From financial penalties to potential criminal liability, the risks are far greater than many entrepreneurs realise.
Whether you are planning to franchise your business, evaluating a franchise opportunity, or deciding between a licensing and franchising model, this conversation offers practical insights into due diligence, legal compliance, and protecting both franchisors and franchisees.

Building a Fast Growing Character IP in Singapore! Here are the potholes [TBS 58 ft VICPA]
2026/06/09
Creators, freelancers, and micro-business owners often only think about contracts, IP rights, payment terms, and legal recourse after something goes wrong.

Why Malaysia is the Next Big Thing in Franchising [TBS 56, Sponsored by MFA]
2026/05/05
Most Singaporeans don't realise our neighbour up north has been quietly building a franchise empire for over three decades, and 2026 might be the biggest edition yet.
We sit down with Kairul Azman Mohd Yusoh, Secretary General of the Malaysia Franchise Association, at the Marrybrown Sentosa flagship to unpack why FIM (Franchising International Malaysia) 2026, happening 21–23 May at KLCC, is officially the longest-running franchise event in the region.
We're talking 150+ companies, 250+ exhibitors, and a 70/30 local-international mix.
From homegrown icons like Marrybrown (45 years strong), Manhattan Fish Market, US Pizza, Global Art and Smart Readers, to the National Franchise Policy 2030 with its five strategic pillars, this is a masterclass in how a country systematically scales SMEs into global brands.
If you've ever wondered whether franchising is a smart, lower-risk way to start a business, this conversation is your starter pack. Watch now.

The Business of Keeping Things Fresh in the Philippines [TBS 52]
2026/03/10
What if the reason your food isn’t fresher isn’t the farm, but everything in between?
In this episode, we dive into a business almost nobody dreams of starting, yet it quietly powers entire cities. Think traffic jams, melting margins, broken fridges, and a problem so hidden that most consumers never even notice it.
Here’s what we’re unpacking:
Why traffic in Metro Manila became a business opportunityThe surprising gap in the “invisible road” your food travels before it reaches youHow a 40% energy efficiency breakthrough sparked something much biggerThe pivot that changed everything, from selling cold rooms to renting them by the boxWhy small businesses were willing to pay before the product even landedThe harsh lessons of trying to sell to big corporations, and why it nearly didn’t workWhy the Philippines, not Singapore, became the launchpadAnd joining us are:
Jonathan Harvey, a food industry veteran who’s spent over 15 years across Southeast Asia uncovering gaps in the region’s cold chain infrastructureJoe Khoo, a former early-stage tech employee with a six-figure exit, who pivoted from VR hardware and sustainability projects into building energy-efficient, self-serve cold hubsTogether, they’re building something deceptively simple, but potentially game-changing for SMEs, food security, and climate tech.
It’s scrappy.
It’s technical.
It’s capital-heavy.
And it almost didn’t work.
If you’ve ever wondered how real founders navigate pivots, funding trade-offs, family responsibilities, and finding product-market fit in an unsexy industry, this episode is for you.
Tune in.
