Why Does the Same Shade Plant Thrive in One Garden and Fail in Another?
2026/09/07
Why can one gardener grow magnificent heucheras, hostas or brunneras while another repeatedly watches the same plants struggle and disappear? In Season 3, Episode 3 of The Shade Gardening Podcast, Marcus explores why the phrase โ€œgrows in shadeโ€ tells us only a small part of what a plant needs. Soil, moisture, root competition, wildlife, seasonal temperatures, planting time and even the condition of the plant when we buy it can all lead to completely different results. This episode isnโ€™t about finding a universally perfect shade plant. Itโ€™s about learning to recognise the different conditions hidden within our gardens, paying attention to the plants that succeed and knowing when to stop fighting for something that simply doesnโ€™t want to grow there. Sometimes the plants that fail teach us something. The survivors may tell us even more.
The Awkward Gap in the Shade Garden
2026/09/01
There comes a point in late summer when some shade gardens seem to lose their way. The spring bulbs have disappeared, the hellebores finished months ago, the foxgloves are fading and even the hostas and ferns may be looking tired. Autumn hasnโ€™t quite arrived either, leaving the garden caught somewhere between two seasons. In this episode of *The Shade Gardening Podcast*, Marcus explores why this awkward gap occurs, which plants can help carry a shaded border through it, and why flowers may not always be the answer. Foliage, shrubs, grasses, paths and other permanent features can all hold the garden together while its earlier plants take a step back. But is this really a gap that needs fixingโ€”or have we become too accustomed to expecting continuous colour? Perhaps the shade garden hasnโ€™t stopped at all. It may simply be pausing between two very different performances.
What This Summer Has Taught Us About Planting in Shade
2026/08/25
This extraordinary summer has left many established shade gardens looking almost unrecognisable. Hellebores have collapsed, astilbes have disappeared, hostas have fried around the edges, and even dependable ferns and hydrangeas have struggled. In this episode of The Shade Gardening Podcast, Marcus looks at what prolonged heat and almost no meaningful rain have done to the plants we normally regard as protected by shade. Has being out of direct sunlight been enoughโ€”and how do we tell whether a plant has died or simply retreated until conditions improve? This isnโ€™t another conversation about conventional dry shade. Itโ€™s an honest look at what happened to ordinarily reliable shade planting during an exceptional British summer, what surprised us, and why the real answers may not become clear until the rain returns and growth begins again next spring.
The Right Plant in the Wrong Place
2026/07/09
Have you ever planted something that you later wished you hadn't? In this episode of The Shade Gardening Podcast, Marcus explores a question that sparked more than 150 responses from the Shade Gardening community: "Which plant do you regret planting?" The answers ranged from vigorous groundcovers like vinca and pachysandra to ambitious climbers such as wisteria, along with mint, English ivy, lily of the valley, sweet woodruff, and many more. But as Marcus read through the comments, one thing became clear. Most gardeners didn't regret the plant itself. They regretted planting the right plant in the wrong place. Join Marcus as he explores why some plants become "problem plants," how understanding a plant's natural growth habit can save years of frustration, and the simple question every gardener should ask before buying their next plant. In this episode: * Why gardeners regret certain plants * The difference between a bad plant and a badly chosen location * Why vigorous plants aren't always the enemy * Learning from real experiences shared by over 150 gardeners * A simple way to make better planting decisions for the future Whether you're creating a new shade garden or rethinking an established one, this episode will help you choose plants with confidence and avoid some of the most common gardening regrets. Join the conversation in The Shade Gardening Facebook Group and share the plant you most regret plantingโ€”you might just help another gardener avoid making the same mistake. Happy Gardening.
Dry Shade: Gardening's Toughest Challenge
2026/07/02
Dry shade is often described as one of the toughest places to garden. Beneath mature trees, alongside hedges, or in those forgotten corners where sunlight is limited and the soil always seems dry, many gardeners simply give up. But they don't have to. In this episode of The Shade Gardening Podcast, Marcus explains why dry shade can be so challenging and, more importantly, how you can work with these conditions rather than against them. You'll discover why the real challenge is often moisture rather than shade itself, how to give plants the best possible start, and which shade-loving plants are well suited to these difficult locations. If you've ever wondered what to grow beneath a tree or struggled with dry, shaded borders, this episode is packed with practical advice and encouragement. In this episode: * Why dry shade is one of gardening's toughest conditions * Understanding the competition for water beneath trees * Choosing the right plants for dry shade * Shade garden favourites including epimediums, hellebores, ferns, sweet box, pachysandra, and hardy geraniums * Preparing the soil and helping plants establish successfully * Why foliage and texture often create the most beautiful dry shade gardens Join the conversation in The Shade Gardening Facebook Group, where thousands of gardeners share advice, inspiration, and their own shade gardening experiences. Happy Gardening.
Gardening with Deer: Is Anything Truly Deer Resistant?
2026/06/25
Deer can turn a carefully planned garden into an all-you-can-eat buffet overnight. But is there really such a thing as a deer-resistant plant? In this episode of The Shade Gardening Podcast, Marcus explores the reality of gardening in areas where deer are regular visitors. Rather than chasing the myth of a completely deer-proof garden, he shares a more practical approach: understanding deer behaviour, choosing plants that are less appealing to browse, and designing gardens that remain beautiful even when wildlife occasionally pays a visit. You'll discover why some plants are generally avoided by deer, how to build a more resilient shade garden, and why adjusting our expectations can often be just as important as choosing the right plants. In this episode: โ€ข Why no plant is completely deer-proof โ€ข Understanding deer behaviour in the garden โ€ข Plants that are often more resistant to browsing โ€ข Deer-resistant shade garden favourites including hellebores, epimediums, ferns, brunnera, pulmonaria, and Japanese forest grass โ€ข Designing borders that are both beautiful and resilient โ€ข Finding a balance between gardening and wildlife If deer are part of your gardening life, this episode will help you spend less time feeling frustrated and more time creating a garden that works with nature rather than constantly fighting against it. Join the conversation in The Shade Gardening Facebook Group and share your own experiences of gardening with deer. Happy Gardening.
