The Heist and Arson In October 1992, a thief broke into the Normal Heights home of Glen Offield, an art director who possessed what was considered the largest and most valuable mint-condition Barbie doll collection in the country. The collection included over 5,000 pieces and 200 rare prototypes, valued at an estimated $1 million. To mask the crime, the perpetrators set fire to the home. However, arson investigators grew suspicious when they failed to find any melted or charred doll remains in the ashes. The Investigation & Resolution The case took several dramatic turns during the SDPD investigation: The Storage Locker Discovery: Within two weeks, police recovered the collection entirely intact. All 5,000 dolls had been packed into 37 moving boxes and crammed floor-to-ceiling inside a rented storage locker beneath a freeway overpass.
