E122 Gluten-Free Grief: The Loss of Travel Freedom
2026/10/06
Has living gluten-free changed the way you travel?   Do you love spontaneous road trips, vacations, exploring new cities, or trying local foods . . . and now feel that travel is out of reach due to living gluten-free?   Maybe you have even thought: “Traveling just isn’t worth it anymore.”   That was my thought at the beginning of my journey, and I've heard the same complaint from many clients.   When most people go gluten-free, they worry about the food.   But nobody talks about the grief, the losses we experience... the grief of our favorite foods, convenience, family traditions, and, yes, feeling different when you travel.     Since losing my dad, grief has taken on a whole new perspective in my life. The more I think about it, the more it correlates to living gluten-free - giving up gluten is a huge change and loss we feel.   Over the last years taking care of my dad, there were many days I felt grief - the loss of traveling (he would never come to my home again!), the loss of eating (he had a hard time using utensils), the loss of communication (we had a hard time having a simple conversation). I was never going to ask him questions about gardening or cooking again. Watching someone decline with Alzheimer’s is a series of saying goodbye.   I’ve thought a lot about this in relation to gluten.   I see it again and again in clients - not wanting to say goodbye to gluten for good, not accepting it and moving on, staying in the feeling of loss instead of creating a new reality.      This week on the podcast, I am starting a new series about the hidden grief of living gluten-free. We’ll study losses that can be easy to overlook, yet have a huge impact on how we feel about our gluten-free lives.   This is definitely something to think about when going gluten-free.   Today, we’re starting with travel freedom: The hidden grief of traveling gluten-free   Going gluten-free changes how you experience vacations, family trips, restaurants, spontaneity, adventure, and even how you see yourself as a traveler.   You may be grieving: The freedom to take a last-minute trip The spontaneity of jumping in the car and going The excitement of trying local foods without worry The confidence that you’ll be able to find safe food wherever you go The ease of traveling with family and friends The feeling that you’re an easy, uncomplicated travel companion The identity of being carefree and adventurous   Have you thought about, or realized your thoughts on the above situations?   In this episode, I’m sharing some of my family’s experiences, including what it is like traveling with my children and seeing firsthand how much research and planning goes into something that once felt so simple.   Also important are the stories from my clients who were afraid that being gluten-free meant they had to stay home, miss out, or become a burden to the people they were traveling with.   But here’s the important part…   We don't have to pretend those losses aren't real. We can acknowledge them and feel the loss.   Then we can create a new version of travel, which may look different but can still be safe, joyful, meaningful, and full of adventure.   Living gluten-free does not mean your life stops. You can still travel, explore, go out with friends and family, and experience new places.   You simply need strategies and plans to make it work (which is exactly what I help you do!)   Next week: we’re talking about another loss that catches so many of us off guard… The loss of convenience.   And trust me . . . I’ve felt this one too.   You don't have to stay home and sit on the couch; you just need to make plans with some new habits to get there safely.   Has living gluten-free changed the way you travel?   Make sure you hit the follow button on the Saying Goodbye to Gluten Podcast because this is only the beginning of our Hidden Grief of Gluten-Free series.     Continue to grow your gluten-free lifestyle: ***Join the Gluten-Free Secrets Challenge to discover the 4 MUST-KNOW Secrets about living gluten-free that may be holding you back and the steps to take now to regain your energy, stamina, and health. E120 Easy and Nourishing Gluten-Free School Lunch Ideas
2026/09/22
You know you need to send your gluten-free child to school with a safe lunch…but what exactly are you supposed to pack?   I’m sure you can relate to standing in front of the pantry or fridge, saying there’s nothing to eat . . . or pack for lunch!   This was the scene at our house before we had our plan in place - If you missed it, I talked about this in the last podcast episode! Listen right here.   Last week, we talked about how to survive school lunch when your child is gluten-free, how to look at what's available at school, consider cafeteria safety, and create a lunch-packing routine that works for your family.   Now it's time for the fun part: What are you actually going to put in that lunchbox?   In this episode of Saying Goodbye to Gluten, I'm sharing a whole bunch of gluten-free school lunch ideas inspired by foods my own children have taken to school over the years.   And we're not just talking about sandwiches!   From yogurt bowls and eggs to tacos, soups, rice bowls, leftovers, and more, you'll find plenty of ideas to add to your family's gluten-free lunch list.   In this episode, you'll learn: Why getting your child involved in choosing and packing lunch matters Gluten-free lunch ideas for preschool through high school Easy protein-packed options like eggs, chicken salad, tuna, and more Creative alternatives to traditional gluten-free sandwiches Why dinner leftovers can be one of your easiest school lunch solutions Simple ways to make fruits and vegetables more appealing and easier for kids to eat Ideas for rounding out a lunchbox with homemade muffins and other treats How involving your child in lunch planning can help them build lifelong gluten-free skills   And remember that creating a family list of lunch ideas can take the guesswork out of school mornings and help everyone create a better routine.   Here's the bigger lesson… Your gluten-free child's lunch doesn't have to look like everyone else's lunch or even be complicated.   One of the best things you can do is sit down with your child and create a family list of lunch ideas together.   Then, when they tell you, “I don't know what I want for lunch,” you already have a list of options they've helped create.   That list also becomes a tool for teaching independence.   The goal isn't for Mom to pack the perfect gluten-free lunch forever.   The goal is to teach your child how to feed themselves safely and confidently as they grow.   And, I can tell you - this works. My older two started packing their own lunches for school - now they are out on their own and bring lunch into work- a skill they have practiced for years!   Start small. Let them choose. Let them help prepare. Give them options. Keep introducing new foods. And gradually give them more responsibility.   That's how we build gluten-free skills that last a lifetime.   Know another gluten-free family who needs lunch ideas? Share this episode with them!   Raising a gluten-free child can feel overwhelming, but you don't have to figure it all out alone.   And remember: you're not just packing a lunch.   You're teaching your child how to live gluten-free.   Also mentioned: Episode #119: How to Survive School Lunch When Your Child Is Gluten-Free   Continue to grow your gluten-free lifestyle: **FREE RESOURCE: Gluten-Free School Checklist: Want to make sure you're thinking beyond just lunch when it comes to keeping your child safe at school? E119 How to Survive School Lunch When Your Child Is Gluten-Free
2026/09/15
As parents, we want our kids to be safe, healthy, included, and able to enjoy their day at school, but there is a lot to think about when gluten is a concern.   School lunch can be one of the most stressful parts of sending a gluten-free child off to school. It creates a lot of worries.   Does the cafeteria offer gluten-free options? Is food prepared safely? Is there a risk of cross-contamination? Are cafeteria staff trained, and do they continue to receive training when staff changes?   And, the question many parents ask themselves: “Do I really have time to pack my child's lunch every day?”   In this episode, we're talking about how to make gluten-free school lunch easier, safer, and more manageable for the whole family.   I'll walk you through what to look for at your child's school, why packing lunch from home may be your best option, and how to turn lunch packing into a family habit instead of one more thing that falls completely on Mom.   In this episode, you'll learn: What to ask your child's school about gluten-free food and cafeteria safety Why packing a gluten-free lunch from home can give you more control and peace of mind How to start teaching your child gluten-free skills as early as preschool Why planning ahead can take so much stress out of your mornings How to get your kids involved in preparing their own lunches as they grow Why it's important to keep teaching your child how to advocate for and protect themselves as they grow And don’t miss my simple tip for families with teenagers!   One of the biggest messages I want you to take away from this episode is that packing a gluten-free lunch doesn't have to become another thing that Mom has to do forever.   Instead, you can use lunch as an opportunity to teach your child how to make choices, prepare food, plan ahead, and take responsibility for their gluten-free life.   The goal isn't simply to get a gluten-free lunch into their backpack.   The goal is to help your child learn the skills they need to live gluten-free safely and confidently . . . now and as they grow.   And remember: every school is different. Start by finding out what your child's school already has in place. Talk with the school, ask questions, understand their policies and procedures, and then decide what will work best for your family.   And - if you’re NOT sending kids to school, but head off to work - you will find tips and strategies you CAN use!   🎧 Don't miss next week's episode! To follow this episode, next week we'll get into the fun part: gluten-free lunch ideas you can actually pack and send to school.   So make sure you come back for that one!   And if you know another mom who is sending a gluten-free child to school, share this episode with her.   Let's make gluten-free life a little easier for more families.   Continue to grow your gluten-free lifestyle: **FREE RESOURCE: Gluten-Free School Checklist: Want to make sure you're thinking beyond just lunch when it comes to keeping your child safe at school? E113 Gluten-Free Summer Meal Challenge - Plan with Purpose

E109 The Hidden Hardships of Living Gluten-Free (Stop the Judgement)
2026/06/02
There was a lot of judgment thrown around last month as we celebrated Celiac Awareness Month.   WE know that living gluten-free isn’t made-up. It isn’t a trend. It isn’t a fad. And, it certainly isn’t always “easy.”   In today’s heartfelt episode, I’m opening up about the judgment, negativity, and misinformation that flooded social media during Celiac Awareness Month, and why it deeply affected the gluten-free community.   If you’ve ever felt misunderstood, left out, judged, overwhelmed, or exhausted by all the planning that comes with living gluten-free, this episode is for you.   People who don’t live this lifestyle often have no idea what goes into staying safe and healthy EVERY SINGLE DAY.   In this episode, we’re talking about: Why Celiac Disease is a serious autoimmune disease — not a choice The emotional and mental load of living gluten-free Social anxiety, exclusion, and judgment within relationships and friendships The hidden stress of grocery shopping, label reading, and cross-contamination Why Celiac Disease changes a spontaneous lifestyle The frustration of hearing people dismiss or mock gluten-free living How to stop listening to negativity and start building confidence in your gluten-free life   This episode is also a reminder that while living gluten-free comes with real hardships and sacrifices… it is still possible to build a healthy, joyful, and fulfilling life.   You are not “too much.” You are not difficult. You are protecting your health.   And that matters.   If this episode encourages you, helps you feel seen, or reminds you that you’re not alone on this journey, please share this episode with another gluten-free friend and leave a review for the podcast so more people find us.   Most importantly:  Keep advocating. Keep educating. Keep showing up for yourself and your health.   Because gluten-free living is real  . . . and so are you.   Continue to grow your gluten-free lifestyle: **Grab the GF Starter Guide to discover the 5 most important steps to successfully implement a gluten-free life that works for you.
