Getting Solar Right in Portugal with John Wallace of Solviva.
2026/10/22
Solar panels and batteries in Portugal: Solviva founder John Wallace explains system sizing, registration, EV charging and how to cut your electricity bills. With 260 to 300 days of sunshine a year and electricity prices that keep climbing, Portugal is one of Europe’s most compelling places to go solar. Yet many homeowners and businesses end up with systems that are poorly sized, unregistered or impossible to upgrade. In this episode, Justin West sits down with John Wallace, founder of Solviva, who brought his experience from South Africa’s solar industry to Portugal to make the process simpler, more transparent and properly supported. Justin shares his own frustrating experience with one of Portugal’s major energy providers: an oversized system, no backup capability during grid outages, delays with legal registration and a customer service line that offered few answers. John explains why generic “package” solutions so often fall short, and why every installation should begin with a careful analysis of current and future energy needs. The conversation covers the essentials every property owner should understand before signing a contract: why systems above 700W must be registered by the installer, and why payment should be held back until that is complete; how correct sizing maximises self-consumption rather than exporting surplus energy for little return; the importance of choosing a hybrid inverter so batteries can be added later; and how bi-hourly tariffs can be used to charge batteries overnight at lower cost. Looking ahead, John explores the arrival of vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-grid technology, expected within the next two to three years, which will allow electric vehicles to act as home batteries. He also discusses the realities of going fully off-grid versus staying grid-tied, the role and limits of AI in solar planning, and why experienced human advice still makes the difference. With well-designed systems typically paying for themselves within three to six years, and some clients reducing their electricity bills by more than 80 per cent, this episode is an essential listen for anyone considering solar, batteries or an EV charger in Portugal. To arrange a personalised solar consultation with John Wallace, visit www.solviva.biz, where you can complete the energy needs questionnaire or book a meeting directly.
Columbus: A Portuguese Prince? Dr Manuel Rosa on His New Book.
2026/10/15
Was Christopher Columbus a Portuguese prince born in Madeira? Dr Manuel Rosa on his new book, a vanished Polish king and a secret kept for centuries. For more than five centuries, Christopher Columbus has been remembered as an Italian weaver from Genoa. Dr Manuel Rosa believes that story is wrong. In this episode, Justin West welcomes Dr Rosa back to Podcast Portugal to discuss his new book, Colombo – Um Príncipe Português, the culmination of 35 years of research and the first in which he commits fully to his conclusion: that the navigator was born in Madeira, the son of King Władysław III of Poland. Dr Rosa revisits the Battle of Varna in 1444, where the young king was said to have died. Letters written in 1445 describe him as alive and well, and a later letter from a monk points to his survival. According to Dr Rosa, Władysław chose not to reclaim his throne, made a pilgrimage as penance for breaking a truce, and settled in Madeira under the name Henrique Alemão, where he was granted lands confirmed by the Portuguese crown. His disappearance allowed his brother Casimir to take the Polish throne, and the truth was kept hidden at the highest levels of European power to prevent civil war. The conversation explores how the names Colón, Colombo and Columbus became confused, beginning with an error in Rome in 1493, and how nineteenth-century historians attached the navigator's life to a Genoese weaver of the same name. Dr Rosa argues that a weaver could never have married into the nobility, as Columbus did when he wed Filipa Moniz, nor risen to become admiral and viceroy. Growing up in Madeira, where villages were linked by sea and his father owned boats, the young heir would instead have learned navigation from childhood. Dr Rosa sets out the documents behind his case, including archival letters, chronicles and a Lithuanian genealogy linking the Polish royal house to the Colón family. He also explains why, as heir to the thrones of Poland, Hungary and Lithuania, Columbus's true identity had to remain a secret, and previews his next book, which will examine the 1492 voyage as a covert Portuguese mission against Spain. Colombo – Um Príncipe Português is available now in Portuguese from bookshops across Portugal, with an English edition still to be announced. Queuing Overnight for a Residency Card: Noah Hallett on the Reality of Moving to Portugal.
2026/10/08
Noah Hallett, a US startup consultant in Lisbon, shares his honest experience of moving to Portugal, from AIMA residency card queues to its startup scene. Moving to Portugal is often presented as a story of sunshine, safety and quality of life, and much of that is true. It is also worth hearing the other side, which is exactly what Noah Hallett brings to this episode. Originally from rural California, Noah is a fractional Chief Customer Officer and strategic advisor to fast-growing startups, and he moved to Lisbon with his family after a careful, data-driven comparison of destinations. That comparison, built in spreadsheets and informed by safety statistics, education outcomes, cost of living and an international network, kept returning to the same conclusion. Concerns about the American school system, safety and rising living costs pushed the family to look abroad, and Lisbon's weather, quality of life and accessible immigration routes made it the clear choice. Noah first came to our attention through a TikTok video in which he vented about queuing for his youngest son's residency card at AIMA. While three of the four family members received their cards smoothly, his son's case turned into six days of waiting, more than 24 hours in line, an all-nighter and repeated biometrics. The card, it transpired, had simply been returned to AIMA after a missed postal delivery. Noah chose not to hire a lawyer so that he could experience and document the process first-hand, and he shares candidly what he saw: limited daily tickets, inconsistent information and people in the queue risking their jobs to be there. Justin and Noah discuss the simple fixes that could transform the experience, from online appointments and real-time status updates to better postal handling and digital PO box services. They also look at why bureaucracy of this kind is an opportunity for startups and technology entrepreneurs, and why so many of these headaches can be avoided altogether with the right relocation support. The conversation then widens to Portugal's startup ecosystem, which Noah sees changing quickly, with new founders, accelerators, government initiatives and funding, and a surprisingly close-knit community of experienced founders supporting newcomers. They consider the limits of a small domestic market and why the strongest businesses use Portugal's talent, costs and quality of life while selling internationally, the role of tourism, and the pressure that modest salaries and rising property prices place on local families. They also cover the shift in the Golden Visa towards genuine residents and business creation, and compare Portugal's income equality and cost of living with the United States. Finally, Noah explains how his TikTok channel, Portuguese Word of the Day, began as a way to hold himself accountable while learning the language, and how it attracted a warm and encouraging Portuguese audience. It is a reminder that a little effort to integrate is met with real generosity. Whether you are planning a move, already here and battling the paperwork, or building a business in Portugal, this is an honest and balanced conversation about what relocating really involves. James Bond, Spies and the Battle of Aljubarrota: Portuguese History with Tomás Pedrosa of Paths of History.
2026/10/01
Tomás Pedrosa of Paths of History explores Portuguese history, from WWII spies in Estoril and the James Bond story to the Battle of Aljubarrota. Portuguese history is far more connected to the wider world than most people realise, and few people tell that story with as much enthusiasm as Tomás Pedrosa. A licensed tour guide of nine years, working across Leiria, Sintra, Lisbon and central Portugal, Tomás is the founder of Paths of History, and in this episode he explains how a schoolboy who disliked history became one of its most passionate storytellers. Tomás and Justin begin with the idea that history is, at heart, storytelling rather than a list of dates and facts. They discuss why so much of what we know comes to us indirectly through archives and secondary sources, and why the way history is taught, including the gaps around the royalist and dictatorial periods in Portuguese schools, shapes what people understand about their own country. From there the conversation turns to identity. Drawing on DNA evidence and his own ancestry results, Tomás describes Portugal as a genuine melting pot, shaped by centuries of migration, conquest and trade, and by explorers who carried Portuguese influence around the globe. He argues that sharing this history helps counter nationalism and the "us versus them" mindset, and helps us avoid repeating the mistakes of the past. The centrepiece of the episode is the extraordinary story of Portugal in the Second World War. As a neutral country leaning towards the Allies, Portugal became a haven for exiled royals, diplomats and spies, with Estoril and Cascais at the heart of the intrigue. Tomás recounts the tale of Dusko Popov, the real-life double agent who operated in Estoril and inspired Ian Fleming to create James Bond, and points out where Bond's screen adventures were filmed in Portugal. He also explains Portugal's delicate diplomacy, including the decision to allow British and American bases in the Azores in 1943. That balancing act rested on the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance, formalised in the treaties of 1373 and 1386 and recognised as the oldest military alliance in the world. Tomás also shares some lighter examples of the connection, such as Queen Catarina introducing tea drinking to England. Finally, the pair go back to the moment that made Portugal an independent nation. When King Ferdinand died without a male heir in 1383, Portugal faced annexation by Castile. At the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385, around 6,000 Portuguese and English troops defeated a far larger Castilian and French army of some 33,000, through superior tactics and knowledge of the terrain. The victory brought the Avis dynasty to the throne, led to the marriage of João I and Philippa of Lancaster, and produced the "illustrious generation" that included Henry the Navigator, setting the stage for the Age of Discovery. Whether you are a history lover, a curious visitor or a new resident wanting to understand your adopted home, this is a lively and accessible conversation about the stories that made Portugal. The Science of Stress: Cortisol, Hormones and Vitamin D with Dr Bronwyn Holmes.
2026/09/24
Dr Bronwyn Holmes explains the science of stress, cortisol, hormones, visceral fat and vitamin D, and how chronic stress affects health, ageing and performance. In this episode of Podcast Portugal, Justin is joined by Dr Bronwyn Holmes for an in-depth conversation on the molecular biology of stress. Dr Holmes challenges the popular idea of adrenal fatigue, explaining that sustained stress causes the body's receptors to stop responding to cortisol, a signalling failure much like insulin resistance. The hormone is still present, but the message is no longer being received. The discussion explores why stress is not inherently harmful. Physical and mental stress trigger the same biological response, and controlled exposure, much like progressive overload in training, is essential for growth and resilience. Dr Holmes explains why modern life often lacks the right kind of challenge, and why children and adults alike benefit from tasks that are difficult but achievable. Dr Holmes also examines how visceral fat, which tends to increase in our forties, behaves as a hormonally active organ, producing its own cortisol and converting hormones into estrogen. She describes how progesterone and estrogen shift with age in both men and women, and why the balance between hormones matters more than any single figure on a blood test. Vitamin D receives particular attention, not only for bone health but for its role in regulating the stress response and immune function. Dr Holmes shares practical guidance on daily time outdoors and supplementation, and explains why low vitamin D can be a marker of chronic stress rather than simply a deficiency. Justin and Dr Holmes also discuss the challenge of accessing preventative and hormonal healthcare in Europe compared with the United States. The episode closes with Dr Holmes setting out a more comprehensive, correctly timed approach to testing, including thyroid, insulin, homocysteine, inflammation, sex hormones and cortisol across the day, and why a normal result does not always mean optimal health. The Digital PO Box: One Stable Address for a Life Without a Fixed Home.
2026/09/10
Digital nomads and remote workers: discover how The Digital PO Box gives you a secure, private mailing address anywhere in the world — no fixed home required. Ron and Justin dig into why banks, insurers and governments still lean on physical post for legally binding notices, and how an outdated address on file can quietly snowball into missed tax letters and real fines. They cover the crucial legal line between a correspondence address and an official residential or business one, real stories of mail going astray in rural postboxes and shared apartment blocks, and why privacy-conscious users increasingly prefer a genuine address over a fake one when signing up for services online. The conversation also ranges across who actually uses the service, from second homeowners splitting their year between two countries, to students keeping their post away from prying parents, to people going through divorce who need a clean, separate address during the transition. Ron shares the company's expansion plans into Asia, and the pair discuss whether governments will eventually catch up to a more mobile, borderless way of living. Colón, Not Columbus: Dr. Manuel Rosa on the 500-Year Identity Mystery Behind the Man Who “Discovered” America.
2026/09/03
Portuguese-American historian Dr. Manuel Rosa has spent thirty-five years challenging the accepted story of Christopher Columbus, and in this episode of Podcast Portugal he explains why the man history remembers as an Italian weaver was, in his view, never Italian at all. Rosa traces the confusion to a fifteenth-century printing error in Rome that sent non-Spanish historians searching for a “Colombo” in Italy, while Spain had always known the navigator by a different name entirely: Colón. Central to Rosa’s research is the marriage of Colón to Filipa Moniz, a high-ranking Portuguese noblewoman and Commendadora of the Order of Santiago, whose family sat at the heart of the royal court. Rosa argues that such a union would have been unthinkable for a peasant or a foreign weaver, and that the marriage alone points to a man of noble standing whose true background had to be concealed rather than celebrated. That concealment, Rosa contends, was deliberate and shared between the Portuguese and Spanish courts. His research points towards Colón being the son of a Polish king who vanished after the Battle of Varna in 1444, his real identity hidden behind a chosen name meaning “member of Christ.” It is a claim that has drawn fierce resistance from mainstream historians, many of whom, Rosa says, have dismissed his work without engaging with the documentary evidence behind it. The conversation also explores the role of DNA testing in the search for the truth, from the 2003 tests on remains in Seville to a fresh round of studies in 2024 that ruled out the Italian, Portuguese royal and Jewish Catalan theories alike — without yet confirming any alternative. For Rosa, each negative result narrows the field further, and he explains why he believes the real answer has been hiding in plain sight for over five centuries. Sporting CP's Sleep Secret: Inside the Mind of a Champion.
2026/08/27
Sporting CP's clinical psychologist and sleep scientist, Dr Rui Pereira, joins Podcast Portugal to reveal how sleep science shapes elite football performance. In this episode, host Justin West sits down with Dr Rui Pereira, a clinical psychologist and sleep scientist who works within the medical department of Sporting Clube de Portugal, one of Portugal's most storied and passionately supported football clubs. Rui's path began in clinical psychology before a PhD in sleep science at a leading UK sports university brought him into direct contact with elite athletes for the first time. Postdoctoral research at the University of Birmingham deepened his expertise, before he returned to his clinical roots within the specific and demanding context of professional sport. Today, his work sits at the intersection of psychology, sleep and athletic performance, a triad he describes as the space where he is most useful to the athletes in his care. The conversation unpacks why elite athletes, despite every incentive to rest well, are often among the most vulnerable to poor sleep. Rui explains how pre-match anxiety, unsociable training schedules, travel and unfamiliar hotel beds all conspire against recovery, and shares a striking finding from his own research: roughly half of athletes struggle to nap effectively, often the very same individuals who struggle most with sleep at night. He draws a clear line between sleep and mental health, describing the two as walking hand in hand, and cautions against reaching first for supplements such as melatonin when consistent daily patterns and habits offer a safer, more sustainable foundation. He also speaks candidly about the psychological pressures of life as a professional athlete, from balancing full-time training with study or work, to the toll of fan commentary and scrutiny on social media. Beyond the science, Justin and Rui reflect on football's outsized influence on Portuguese society and on younger fans in particular, weighing the honour-driven codes of rugby and martial arts against some of the game's less sportsmanlike habits, while singling out figures such as Cristiano Ronaldo as a positive example. Rui also opens up about his ambition to build a more public, evidence-based presence, cutting through the misinformation that dominates health content on social media, with LinkedIn identified as the natural home for that work. Listeners are encouraged to follow Dr Rui Pereira on LinkedIn to stay across his research, future publications and any forthcoming projects in the sleep and performance space. Ancient Stones, Living Landscapes and the Forgotten Knowledge of Our Ancestors.
2026/08/13
Portugal is home to some of Europe’s most remarkable megalithic monuments, yet many remain largely unknown outside specialist archaeological circles. Scattered across the countryside are ancient stone circles, dolmens, standing stones and sacred landscapes that predate many of the world’s most famous historical sites by thousands of years. In this fascinating episode of Podcast Portugal, Justin West sits down with Scottish explorer, filmmaker and megalithic researcher David O’Connor, founder of Reppin Nature, to discuss what these ancient places may reveal about our ancestors and their relationship with the natural world. Through years of field research, filmmaking and immersive tours across Scotland, Portugal and beyond, David has developed a unique perspective on the role these sites played within the wider landscape. Rather than viewing megalithic monuments solely as ceremonial or ritual locations, David explores the possibility that many were sophisticated landscape-based technologies, carefully positioned in relation to geological features, water systems, light patterns, acoustics and natural energies. His work examines how prehistoric communities may have understood their environment in ways that modern society has largely forgotten. The conversation journeys through some of Portugal’s most significant megalithic regions and explores why ancient people invested extraordinary effort into constructing these monuments. What knowledge guided their placement? Why do so many sites share common characteristics across vast geographical distances? And what can these ancient structures teach us about living in greater harmony with the Earth? David discusses the importance of experiencing these places firsthand rather than viewing them purely through textbooks or archaeological reports. Atmosphere, landscape, scale and human experience are central themes throughout his work. By immersing ourselves within these environments, he believes we gain insights that cannot always be captured through conventional academic analysis alone. Justin and David also explore broader questions surrounding modern society’s relationship with nature. As technology increasingly dominates daily life, many people are searching for deeper connections to landscape, ancestry and place. Ancient monuments may offer clues not only about the past but also about how we might reconnect with the natural world today. The discussion touches on archaeology, history, mythology, geology, consciousness, landscape interpretation and the enduring mystery surrounding some of humanity’s oldest surviving structures. While many questions remain unanswered, these mysteries continue to inspire researchers, explorers and curious travellers from around the world. For anyone fascinated by ancient history, Portugal’s hidden heritage, archaeology, exploration or humanity’s connection to nature, this episode offers a thought-provoking journey into some of the most intriguing landscapes on Earth. About David O’Connor David O’Connor is a Scottish explorer, filmmaker and founder of Reppin Nature. Through field research, filmmaking and guided tours, he explores megalithic sites, ancient landscapes and humanity’s relationship with the natural world. Aldeias do Futuro: Heitor Carvalho on Rural Regeneration in Portugal.
2026/08/06
Documentary filmmaker Heitor Carvalho talks to Podcast Portugal about Aldeias do Futuro and the rural regeneration and ecovillage movement reviving Portugal. In this episode, Justin West is joined by Heitor Carvalho, a Portuguese documentary filmmaker and cultural contributor closely associated with the country's rural regeneration and ecological transition movement. Heitor is best known for his feature-length documentary, Aldeias do Futuro (Villages of the Future), which explores the profound transformation currently underway in rural Portugal. To make the film, Heitor spent several months travelling across the country, visiting intentional communities, ecovillages and grassroots local projects. His work highlights the Re.Rural movement, which shows how abandoned and ageing villages are being revitalised as hubs for community living, ecological cooperation and sustainable land stewardship. Rather than portraying traditional villages as relics of the past, the documentary frames them as modern laboratories for learning how to live together and manage land sustainably. Justin and Heitor discuss the making of the documentary, the communities he encountered along the way, and the broader questions his work raises about community living, ecological transition and Portugal's shifting relationship with the land. Functional Mushrooms, Urban Farming and the Future of Wellness in Portugal.
2026/07/16
What if the future of wellness grows in a mushroom farm in central Portimão? In this episode of Podcast Portugal, Claudia, founder of Gribb, explains how certified organic functional mushrooms, urban farming, sustainability and science-backed nutrition are reshaping the wellness industry while creating a more transparent and environmentally responsible future. The global wellness industry is worth billions, yet consumers are becoming increasingly sceptical of marketing claims, imported supplements and products that promise everything while explaining very little. In this episode of Podcast Portugal, Justin West sits down with Claudia, founder of Gribb, to explore how one Portuguese company is challenging industry norms through transparency, science and a unique farm-to-bottle approach. Based in Portimão in the Algarve, Gribb is a certified organic functional mushroom farm founded by Claudia and her partner Ion. Rather than importing ingredients or outsourcing production, Gribb controls the entire process, from cultivation and harvesting through to extraction and bottling. Their mission is simple: create trustworthy wellness products while educating consumers about the extraordinary potential of functional mushrooms. The conversation explores the rapidly growing world of functional mushrooms, including species traditionally used to support focus, immunity, energy, recovery and overall wellbeing. Claudia explains why mushrooms have fascinated scientists, nutritionists and health-conscious consumers for centuries and why they are experiencing renewed interest today. One of the most fascinating aspects of the Gribb story is its commitment to circular sustainability. The farm repurposes sawdust waste from local wood workshops in Monchique as growing substrate and operates from a revitalised urban space in the centre of Portimão. After harvest, spent mushroom substrate is returned to local farms, creating a circular system that reduces waste while supporting local agriculture. Beyond mushrooms, this episode examines broader questions about modern health, consumer trust and entrepreneurship. Claudia discusses why so many people are seeking natural alternatives to support their wellbeing and why transparency has become one of the most valuable currencies in today’s wellness market. Justin and Claudia also discuss the realities of launching and scaling a purpose-driven business in Portugal, the challenges facing small producers, and how education is becoming as important as the products themselves. Through Gribb’s growing community, educational content and commitment to scientific literacy, the company aims to help consumers make informed decisions rather than simply follow the latest health trend.
