2026/10/15
In this episode of The Next Tour, Andia and Ian explore veteran entrepreneurship and business ownership support with Mitch Fitzpatrick, a US Army veteran and Director at VetBiz.
At VetBiz, Mitch and his team provide invaluable resources for veterans looking to start their own businesses. They offer business counseling and training, helping individuals from idea to execution. Mitch emphasizes that their services extend beyond veterans to military spouses and family members, ensuring a wide-reaching impact.
Mitch highlights the common challenges veterans face in the exploratory phase of starting their business, often questioning whether their idea is viable. He reassures them that every idea has potential; success lies in execution, not just the concept. He introduces his framework for evaluating business ideas, which revolves around five crucial pillars. He emphasizes the importance of having a clear goal and direction, warning against the distractions of social media and the allure of seemingly easy business ventures.
Mitch’s insights remind us that while ideas are important, the path to success requires hard work, adaptability, and a genuine passion for the business. Hi's journey from military service to entrepreneurship support is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of veterans. As he puts it, there are no bad ideas only opportunities waiting for the right execution. For veterans and their families considering entrepreneurship, Mitch and the team at VetBiz stand ready to offer guidance and support.

2026/10/01
In this episode of The Next Tour, Andia and Ian delve into Brett Hamilton’s professional experiences, who successfully transitioned from a 30-year military career to a significant role in healthcare recruitment at Inova, Northern Virginia’s largest healthcare provider network. His journey encapsulates the challenges and opportunities faced by military personnel entering civilian healthcare roles.
Brett shares that his background in the military, particularly in recruiting, has equipped him with valuable insights into the healthcare sector. He emphasizes the importance of understanding the qualifications necessary for various healthcare roles, noting that the military often competes with private healthcare for talent.
He also encourages military members to maintain a flexible mindset. While some may be hesitant about entering the civilian workforce, he highlights the necessity of having a backup plan.

From administrative positions to hands-on roles, there's a place for everyone. Brett notes that even technical skills, like those of mechanics and electricians, are in demand within healthcare settings.

Episode 44 - Transition Spotlight: Networking Tips
2026/09/15
In this episode of The Next Tour, Andia and Ian explore the art of networking with practical tips and insights. Networking often feels daunting, yet it’s more about nurturing relationships than making quick connections. Additionally, networking is fundamentally about give and take, where one can not only seek help but also offer support. It's about creating a mutual relationship, not just a transactional one. This perspective shifts the focus from immediate gains to long-term growth and connection.
Some practical tips for effective networking include:
· Start Small: Networking doesn’t always have to be formal. Simple virtual coffees or informational interviews can open new doors. Think of it this way: asking someone to share their experience is not a burden, as most people enjoy sharing their journey.
· Leverage Existing Networks: Your current environment, be it military or civilian, already contains potential connections. Consider how spouses often excel in networking due to their adaptability and resourcefulness.
· Utilize LinkedIn Effectively: Start building your online presence. Connect with others in your desired field, follow companies of interest, and engage with associations that resonate with your career goals.
As Andia notes, “Seven out of ten job seekers have a personal connection at the job they end up going into.” This statistic highlights the importance of having a robust network. It’s also crucial to remember that many jobs are filled through informal networks. Ian and Andia share their experiences, where their last roles were secured thanks to connections made well before jobs were formally posted.

Episode 43 - Transition and Three Perspectives
2026/09/01
In this episode of The Next Tour, Andia and Ian talk with Ashley Richards, a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, who shares her multifaceted experiences as she navigates life after military service, as a retiree, a government civilian, and a military spouse (her three perspectives).
Transitioning from military to civilian life can be a daunting journey, filled with unique challenges and unexpected revelations. Ashley describes her retirement as non-traditional, largely influenced by the post-COVID climate. This shift brought about a significant personal change, where she was no longer Lieutenant Colonel Richards, she was Mrs. Richards. And that was a huge transition in and of itself. Ashley went on to serve as a Federal civilian for several years and is also a military spouse whose husband is still on active duty.
