PG Mini-Bonus: Glenna Marshall and Elizabeth Santelmann Teach Us About Emetophobia
2026/10/14
Look, I don't know when you appreciate a trigger warning buuuuut for the purposes of anyone listening while driving or making sandwiches or driving through Chick-fil-A to pick up sandwiches...um: TRIGGER WARNING. You might want to just read a few lines of the show's transcript for this one before you decide to dive in. BUT, if you join us, prepare to gross-guffaw with Bible teachers Glenna Marshall and Elizabeth Santelmann as they meet for the first time with what should go on record as the strangest pre-association to one another. Listener, apologies for what we think was a low battery on Glenna's Air Pod--but it's just one of those convos that can't be recreated. Welcome to the first ever *PG* Mini-Bonus. It's going to be a wild ride! Glenna's book Praying in Pain released in June. You can find Glenna at her web site or on Instagram. Elizabeth's Bible study Gently Tended released in September. Kelly Yang Has a Complicated Relationship with Cheese
2026/10/12
Listen, cheese is getting a lot of air time this show, but something tells us that author Kelly Yang's cheese-o-phobia is representative of such a small slice (ha ha) of the population that, OH WELL. Less holes in that argument than a slice of... It's middle grade author and podcaster Kelly Yang on Unseriously! She and Holly will talk about that time Kelly's Tiger Bomb ring got shut down by the principal, owning being in what Kelly calls their "cringe era," and the likelihood of Holly showing up in a future Kelly book. Beyond this being the episode where Holly expresses her complicated feels on Kelly's book The Take to its author, this episode also doubles as a Kate DiCamillo love fest and tribute to the power of just showing up. Great words here from Kelly about overcoming self-doubt, sharing your struggles with a trusted friend, and embracing when your process looks different from another's, plus Holly makes an episode request of the StoryKind pod: one about "The Book in the Drawer." Kelly is the author of the very popular Front Desk series and the accompanying graphic novel, just out at the beginning of this month, plus The Take, which Holly references, and co-hosts StoryKind with Kate DiCamillo. Holly also references Dust to Dust and Whistler in this episode. Find Kelly on Instagram or her web site, kellyyang.com. The One About the Drill, with Rebekah Hannah and Michael Keller
2026/10/05
Yes, they're only brother and sister in Christ but Holly felt like she was looking in the rearview mirror during much of this interview, making certain Bekah Hannah and Mike Keller weren't smacking each other upside the head across the bench seat. Come along for this crazy-hilarious road trip with Bekah and Mike as they realize they agree on just how many things they disagree on, not counting the quantities of ice cream bribe their sorority of collective daughters can consume. The brother-sister banter is HIGH on this episode--you're going to want to lace up your sneaks and pull on your flesh-toned track suit to be ready to run to keep up with these two. Michael Keller is the senior pastor of Redeemer, Lincoln Square in New York City, where Rebekah Hannah serves as his wife's best friend...oh yeah, and also Director of Family Formation. (Did we mention the Hannahs and the Kellers are neighbors??) Yeah, about that...you're just going to have to listen... Bekah and Mike's book, Talking to Your Kids About Hard Things, is landing on Holly's Top Books of 2026 post (upcoming in December on Instagram), but that's not the only project they have together. You can find them on Redeemer's Q&R podcast. Separately (as Holly recommends), they each have multiple projects just out or about to come out--(ladies first, Michael): Bekah's children's picture book, Zara and the Mean Girl, as well as her spiritual formation book for grown-ups--a 5-star read for Holly--The Secret to Confidence, and her counseling company, Anchored Virtual. Mike has a new book with his dad, Tim Keller, just out called The Stories We Live By: How Jesus Critiques and Completes What Our Culture Tells Us. Be sure to follow up the post-dinner-reaching group text with silence...it's time for the sibling sparring that should've named this episode: Holly Mackle Stirs the Pot. Replay: Collin Hansen Thinks the Internet Is a Fad
2026/09/28
While Unseriously's on its two-week seasonal break it's a replay with yet another of our favorite male guests--this week it's the who-expected-him-to-be-as-funny-as-he-is, Collin Hansen. You know him as the top dog editor at The Gospel Coalition, the host of the beloved Gospelbound podcast, and the author of countless sources of faithful scholarship, commentary, and criticism...but have you ever seen him as Rudy's stunt double? It's time to get Unseriously with Collin Hansen. Collin and Holly will discuss why Collin could not bring himself to move up the American Revolution, plus his next career taking over the @birminghamburgers Instagram. But don't worry, we cut out the ten minute riff of them impersonating every Birmingham radio personality they could remember since 2006. If you're Rebecca McLaughlin, Skyler Flowers, Glenn Wishnew, Nadya Williams, Molly Worthen, or Sarah Irving-Stonebraker--you're going to want to listen to this episode. If you're Andrew Wilson...ah, maybe not so much. Collin has a brand new (free) weekly newsletter subscription, Unseen Things--well worth your time--and his latest books, The Gospel After Christendom and Where Is God in a World with So Much Evil?, both available from TGC. **added to notes for this episode's re-release--Collin's writing on the topic of AI in the newsletter Unseen Things is unsurpassed. Music for Unseriously was composed by Adam Wright of The Corner Room, a ministry that sets Scripture to music as a tool for meditation and memorization. His latest Christmas project, Light Has Shone, is a beautiful journey through five Advent passages that point us to Jesus, the true light of the world. PG Replay: Jose Sarduy Is Here to Date Your Daughter
2026/09/21
It's an Unseriously replay with the one, the only JOOOOOEY SAAAATURDAY...er...Jose Sarduy. While Unseriously's on it's quarterly two-week break, let's go back and visit two of our favorite male guests--up next week, one you might not have guessed was as funny as he is, and this week, one you could've guessed was a riot. It's comedian Jose Sarduy. *Fair Warning: Find Jose Sarduy's clean comedy specials with Dry Bar Comedy on YouTube here and here. Anywhere else is the wild, wild west...don't send me an email. My Covid lockdown habit was Dry Bar with a side of Tiger King (what was yours?) and that's where I was first introduced to Jose. Since then he's managed to overturn the giggle box of my entire family and just about all of my friends, so it feels only right that he should've been invited to Unseriously. I'd watch the Dry Bar specials with grown-up ears only first just to make sure you're good with them, but if they clear your content filters I can't wait to hear what lines your family latches on to. Ladies and gentlemen, Joey Saturday. You can keep up with Jose on his web site (including finding upcoming shows) or on his Instagram or Facebook. Heads up (per Jose) that tour dates at theaters and cruise ships are generally PG but bar or comedy club appearances where he's workshopping new stuff...not necessarily so much. Mary Ryan Brown Hangs with the Terry Gross She Might See at a Buc-ee's
2026/09/14
Put on your pantyhose and your Talbots 2-piece skirt suit and get ready to glow up for the Nerd Carnival--it's one of the Deep South's very own, bean connoisseur and Holly's brand new duo interpretation partner, comedian Mary Ryan Brown. Listen in and feel bad for guys actually named Greg as Mary Ryan and Holly delve into their oddball-similarities, including both a long-held affinity for Terry Gross and the knowledge of which Staples you have to go to to find that specific book. This episode is chock-full of the joy that is Mary Ryan's comedy and quick wit, whether that's in giving new meaning to the term "tube sock," looking for the Whalt Disney Whorld adults with a sense of humor, or talking Mary Ryan out of a Tide pod...we're just going to presume you know her already - but if you don't - Unseriously is delighted to introduce you. Mary Ryan and Holly will also have some dear moments you won't want to miss remembering Mary Ryan's grandmother, Dr. Frances A. Karnes, what makes Southerners so special, and the intersection of faith and comedy. Find Mary Ryan on Instagram or at her web site, maryryanbrown.com. Local friends, note she's appearing at the Stardome in Birmingham on October 4th with Landon Bryant. And here's that tomato soup recipe Mary Ryan talks about! 5-6 Roma tomatoes, sliced 1 can of butter beans, drained 1 can of Cannelinni beans, drained 1 orange bell pepper, sliced 1 whole head of garlic, covered in olive oil and wrapped in foil  1 whole yellow onion, quartered Olive oil Garlic powder Onion powder Salt  Pepper Trader Joe's Soffrito seasoning  Combine all ingredients on a large sheet pan and roast for 45 minutes at 400 degrees. Blend roasted ingredients, then add one tablespoon of balsamic vinegar and vegetable broth or heavy cream to achieve desired consistency. Get Serious: Amy Grimes
2026/09/07
Amy Grimes is back on Unseriously! Holly and Amy had *so much fun* in Amy's first episode, Amy Grimes, Duchess of Chipmunk Hazzard, and you can find that one in season 2 of the show--but now it's time to welcome Amy back for a Get Serious edition. Get ready to be spurred, encouraged, and left speechless with awe of how God made us--plus pick up some practical tips from Amy as to how to deal with creativity-killing thoughts that speak lies like "I am not impressed," or "This is a waste of time." Amy's piece, "In Awe" can be viewed at this link on her Instagram. Overcome negative self talk, reach for something beautiful, and oh yeah--have a little fun at the expense of ill-prepared public speaking--hope you enjoy this episode of Unseriously! Hope Blanton and Chris Gordon Named Their Book After Hope
2026/08/31
Put on the Cardi B., snap on your overalls, and lace up those combat boots--it's time for the ladies from At His Feet studies, Hope Blanton and Chris Gordon. (Did you know they named their new book after Hope?? Yeah, the publisher wouldn't let them call it Hope & Chris for the Anxious and Depressed...so weird, B&H.) Hope and Chris BRING IT in this episode, letting us all know we really should be more afraid of the butterfly house, the microwave, and those boys in Hebrew class. These ladies set the example for being unapologetically themselves, and the way they live life in color is refreshing and shame-releasing. And also possibly has undiagnosed dyslexia...maybe, we don't know, but probably yes. They bring their whole hearts to this episode, laughing together and reminding us all that Jesus is not ashamed of us. Chris and Hope's new book, Hope for the Anxious and Depressed, releases September 29th with B&H and is on preorder now. You can find all of their previous studies at their web site, athisfeetstudies.com, where you can also find their latest study on 1 Corinthians. The ladies are also on the Instagram. Get Serious: Mark Whitworth
2026/08/24
It's a very special Get Serious episode with Holly's real life friend, Mark Whitworth. Mark served for 27 years in several capacities at the Southeastern Conference (or the SEC for those of you sportsy-folk), ultimately as associate commissioner. Through a series of events you've just got to hear him tell, he was recruited to Asbury University first as their Athletic Director, and now as a Senior Vice President and Chief of Staff...and he landed there just a couple of years before the revival, or what is now referred to as the Outpouring at Asbury. Mark shares stories from those extraordinary days, ushering those of us who observed from afar straight into Hughes Auditorium, letting us in on just how God had used his previous training at the SEC to equip him for such a time as this. Be encouraged as you are reminded how God writes our stories and prepares us for the unimaginable. Plus, it's a call to radical humility and an expectant heart. Holly wants you to know if only she could have named this episode a normal Unseriously-style name, she definitely would have called it: "Mark Whitworth Ditched Chapel." Look for more funny stories from Mark on an upcoming episode, but for now this episode will lean into the serious, and we hope your heart is led into worship as well. Links, Mentions, and Resources: Asbury University on Instagram Battle for the Heart/Wellspring Group Mark references, and their previous episode of Unseriously OMPC founding and former lead pastor, Bob Flayhart Mr. "I Preached a Stinker. Ned Bustard Is Judging Your Music Taste
2026/08/17
Pop that top on an ice cold Cherry Coke and get ready to break into the song "Safety Dance," it's one of Christendom's most recognizable artists, Ned Bustard. Listen in as Ned tells of his daughters co-opting superhero story lines, how he most easily catches shade from them, and all about how they both betray and disobey him. And oh yeah--you might take this episode as a fair warning before you invite Ned over for dinner. But there's also some serious too--Ned and Holly will talk about their shared appreciation for a spirit of collaboration (see what we did there??), reading aloud as an act of love, Bible & Bagels, and of course, his artwork. You can find Ned on his web site, worldsendimages.com, where you can see all of his books and projects, and at rabbitroom.com, where you can specifically find the Every Moment Holy collection--his collaboration with Doug MacKelvey. Ned is also on Instagram. John Hendrix, Stephen Crotts, Joe Sutphin, and Matt Clark likewise get shout-outs, as do the spectacular Alan & Diana Bauer of Square Halo Books.
