Description

"Cage Free Theology" is a weekly Bible Q&A discussion with two Baptist, Calvinist, and Premillennial, pastors. As Spurgeon said, there's no need to defend a lion in a cage; simply open the cage door and the lion will fend for itself! We don't defend a preconceived system of theology, we just let the Bible speak for itself, and we go wherever a literal hermeneutic takes us.The hosts are pastors Clint Archer (MDiv, ThM, DMin, PhD) and Will Brannon (MDiv, DMin), based at Christ Fellowship Baptist Church in Mobile, Alabama. They both trained at The Master's Seminary and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and between the two of them they have nearly 30 years of full-time ministry experience. Much of that has involved fielding questions from new believers, old believers, and unbelievers, and then sharing what the Bible has to say on a wide array of topics. They will cover subjects with their engaging and light-hearted banter, including explaining theology, offering interpretations of various difficult Bible passages, discussing counseling scenarios, and even the nuts and bolts of ministry and expository preaching. (Clint occasionally digresses about how animals should live cage-free while Will reminds him of the appeal of meat!) Each episode addresses one main question, without rambling or irrelevant interjections, to equip listeners to answer questions they have, or questions they get asked by friends. Subscribers get to send in their questions too!Jesus came to set us free, so beware of manmade cages!

Episode #090: What Is The Fear Of The Lord?
2026/09/28
What does it actually mean to fear the Lord? Is it being afraid of God? In today's episode of Cage Free Theology, Clint Archer and Will Brannon get into the Bible giving us a deeper picture of what the fear of the Lord looks like. Proverbs 9:10 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” This kind of fear is not simply terror or dread. It is a deep reverence, awe, respect, and recognition of who God is.   Fearing God does not mean we have to live in constant anxiety that He will reject us. For those who trust in Him, Scripture also speaks about God’s love, mercy, forgiveness, and the confidence we can have in His presence. They discuss whether Christians should watch horror movies, what Scripture means by “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,” and why biblical fear of God is more than simply “respect” or “reverence.” They also explore the difference between the fear an unbeliever should have of God's judgment and the holy awe believers should have toward God. Most importantly, this conversation points to the comfort of the gospel: believers do not need to fear God's wrath because Christ has already borne that judgment on their behalf. The right fear of God doesn't drive Christians away from Him—it drives us toward Him. ⏱️ Timestamps 00:00 — What does it mean to fear the Lord? 01:19 — Should Christians watch horror movies? 03:18 — Violence, horror, and what we allow into our minds 05:20 — Is the fear of God a good thing? 08:59 — “He is not safe, but He is good” 10:38 — How should believers fear God differently? 11:16 — How does perfect love cast out fear? 17:25 — How fearing God can drive out other fears 18:02 — What if you feel like God is angry with you? 20:05 — “It is I. Do not be afraid.”
Episode #089: How Should Christians Think On Fear & Anxiety?
2026/09/21
Fear and anxiety are part of everyday life—but when does normal fear become sinful fear? And how should Christians respond when our minds become consumed by “what ifs,” worst-case scenarios, or the opinions of other people? In this episode of Cage Free Theology, Clint Archer and Will Brannon have a practical, biblical conversation about fear, anxiety, phobias, and the fear of man. They discuss how to distinguish a God-given response to genuine danger from fear that reflects misplaced trust, and they explore how Scripture calls believers to respond. From alligators and frogs to flying, future uncertainty, and the fear of other people's opinions, this conversation brings biblical truth into very practical situations. The central question throughout the episode is: What is true, and what does God say? ⏱️ Timestamps 00:36 — How Should We Think About Fear and Anxiety? 01:15 — What Is Fear, and Is Fear Always Sinful? 03:21 — When Does Fear Become a Sin Issue? 04:35 — Diagnosing Fear: What Are You Afraid of Losing? 05:47 — Philippians 4: Responding to Anxiety With Prayer 07:19 — Adam, Fear, and Hiding From God in Genesis 3 13:24 — How Should Christians Approach Fear Differently? 21:35 — Understanding the Fear of Man And don't forget: fear doesn't have to control you—learn to ask what is true, what God has said, and how you should respond.
Episode #088: Clean & Unclean: What Is Kosher?
2026/09/14
Why did God declare some animals “clean” and others “unclean” in the Old Testament—and what does that mean for Christians today? In this episode of Cage-Free Theology, Clint Archer and Will Brannon explore the biblical dietary laws in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14, the meaning of kosher, and the major theories behind clean and unclean animals.  They discuss:       -Pigs, shellfish, birds, and other animals      -They connect these Old Testament laws to Jesus’ teaching in Mark 7, Peter’s vision in Acts   10, and the Jerusalem Council in Acts 15      -Christian freedom, holiness, and being sensitive to the consciences of others Ultimately, the Old Testament’s clean and unclean food laws point beyond what is on the plate to God’s call for His people to be holy and set apart. In Christ, those dietary restrictions have been fulfilled, but the call to holiness remains. Join us as we unpack what these ancient laws mean—and why they still matter for Christians today. ⏱️Timestamps:     00:23 — What are clean and unclean animals?     00:52 — What does “kosher” mean?     02:48 — Why should Christians care about kosher laws?     04:29 — Clean and unclean animals in Leviticus 11     05:12 — The rules for land animals     08:04 — Fish, shellfish, and the kosher diet     11:20 — Four theories behind clean and unclean animals     19:19 — Is there one explanation for these laws?     23:38 — Jesus declares all foods clean     24:19 — Peter, Cornelius, and the vision in Acts 10
Episode #087: Is There Value In Learning Greek?
2026/09/07
What is the value of learning biblical Greek? Is Greek only for pastors and scholars, or can ordinary Christians benefit from studying the original language of the New Testament? In this episode of Cage Free Theology, Clint Archer and Will Brannon discuss why biblical Greek matters, how the original languages can deepen Bible study, and how grammar can actually shape theology. They explore Jesus’ use of the tense of a single Greek word, the importance of Koine Greek, how translations can influence theological interpretation, and practical ways Christians can begin learning Greek. Whether you want to learn the Greek alphabet, understand Greek words in commentaries, study the New Testament for yourself, or revive Greek you learned years ago, this episode offers practical advice and encouragement. Greek isn't the goal—the goal is knowing God's Word better so that we can glorify God more. ⏱️Timestamps: 00:15 — Why should Christians learn biblical Greek? 01:23 — The original languages of the Bible 02:45 — Reading the Bible through the “veil” of translation 04:57 — How Jesus used Greek grammar to defend the resurrection 07:39 — What is Koine Greek? 09:03 — Greek, the Roman world, and the spread of the Gospel 12:00 — How learning Greek can deepen Bible study 15:07 — How Greek and translation can affect theology 18:53 — How to start learning biblical Greek 24:05 — “Only Mostly Dead”
Episode #086: What Does It Mean That God Is Omnipresent?
2026/08/31
In this episode of Cage Free Theology, Clint Archer and Will Brannon explore the biblical doctrine of God’s omnipresence—what it means to say that God is everywhere, while also understanding how He can be uniquely present with His people.  They discuss the difference between God being present everywhere and the idea that God is in everything, using passages such as Psalm 139 to explain God’s presence in heaven, on earth, and even in the realm of the dead. They also explore how God can be uniquely manifested in places such as the tabernacle and temple, and how the incarnation of Christ and the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit deepen our understanding of God’s presence.  The conversation also gets practical:      -I God is always present?      -What does that mean for our holiness, private lives, and assurance of salvation?      -What about our daily walk with Him?      -And how should we think about Satan, who is powerful but not omnipresent?  Join us each week as Cage Free Theology explores challenging theological questions and seeks to bring biblical truth into everyday life!  ⏱️ Timestamps: 0:00 — What Does It Mean That God Is Omnipresent? 0:48 — Breaking Down the Meaning of “Omnipresent” 2:46 — Is God Everywhere or In Everything? 4:39 — Psalm 139 and the Biblical Case for God’s Omnipresence 6:15 — Is God Present in Hell? 7:43 — How Can God Be Everywhere Yet Uniquely Present? 11:34 — Jesus, the Incarnation, and God’s Omnipresence 15:32 — God’s Presence With Believers and the Holy Spirit 16:33 — Satan Is Not Omnipresent 17:37 — The Practical Impact of God’s Omnipresence 20:48 — Omnipresence and Assurance of Salvation
Episode #085: What Is The Doctrine Of Aseity?
2026/08/24
What does it mean that God is self-existent and why does this doctrine matter for everyday Christians? In this episode of Cage-Free Theology, Clint Archer and Will Brannon explore the doctrine of God’s aseity: the truth that God depends on nothing outside Himself for His existence, life, power, or sustaining nature. From “I AM” in Exodus to questions about the origin of the universe, they discuss how God’s self-existence shapes our worship, humility, dependence, evangelism, and understanding of who God truly is. They also tackle common questions like:      -Who made God?      -Why does God exist?      -How can we know there is a God? They also consider how the doctrine of aseity helps Christians answer these questions biblically. If you want to think more deeply about God’s character and how theology connects to everyday Christian life, this episode is for you. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 – What Is the Doctrine of Aseity? 00:56 – Why Knowing Who God Is Matters for Every Christian 02:24 – Where Does God Come From?  04:07 – God Is Completely Different From Everything He Created 05:41 – Did God Create Us Because He Needed Us? 07:08 – Our Dependence on a Self-Sufficient God 08:40 – How Aseity Helps Us Answer Gospel Questions f this episode challenged you, encouraged you, or sparked questions, let us know in the comments below! Episode #084: How Should Christians Study The Bible?
2026/08/17
How should Christians read and study the Bible? Is it simply a matter of opening the Scriptures and asking, “What does this mean to me?” Or are there principles we need to follow to understand what God has actually said?   Every Christian has a hermeneutic—whether they realize it or not. The question is whether we're using a good one.  In this episode of Cage Free Theology, Clint Archer and Will Brannon explore the basics of biblical hermeneutics—the art and science of interpreting Scripture. They explain why the genre, grammar, context, cross-references, and overall message of the Bible matter when determining what a passage means. The conversation walks through a practical approach to Bible study:       -Pray      -Read the text carefully      -Consider its context      -Compare Scripture with Scripture      -Apply what you learn The guys also examine several familiar Bible verses that are frequently taken out of context and explain why understanding the surrounding passage is essential to understanding what Scripture means. Most importantly, the goal of Bible study isn't simply to gain information. We study God's Word so that we can know God, believe what is true, and live according to His Word. Whether you're a new Christian learning how to study the Bible or a seasoned believer looking to sharpen your approach to Scripture, this episode offers practical principles for reading God's Word faithfully. ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 — How Should You Read the Bible? 00:50 — What Is Hermeneutics? 05:00 — Ezra's Model: Study, Practice, and Teach 05:45 — Why Prayer Matters When Studying Scripture 06:48 — How to Read the Biblical Text Carefully 08:22 — Understanding the Context of Scripture 11:28 — Using Cross-References to Interpret the Bible 14:47 — “The Unclear in Light of the Clear” 19:47 — How to Use Bible Commentaries Wisely 22:37 — From Bible Study to Application

2026/08/10

He even commands angels to protect his people. It's an astounding thought... but your focus remains on God, not the angel."
Episode #081: How Many Final Judgements Are In The Bible?
2026/07/27
How many final judgments are in the Bible? In this week's episode of Cage-Free Theology, hosts Clint Archer and Will Brannon dive deep into biblical eschatology to answer that deceptively simple question. Cutting through common misconceptions about individual earthly punishments, they explore the distinct end-times judgments outlined in Scripture, providing clarity on who stands before God, when these events take place, and what they mean for both believers and unbelievers. Understanding what Scripture says about final judgment doesn't have to be a source of anxiety. As Clint and Will unpack, recognizing the distinctions between the Bema seat, the sheep and the goats, and the Great White Throne helps resolve apparent contradictions in biblical eschatology. Ultimately, these doctrines point believers away from fear and straight to the absolute security of the Gospel—where Christ took our judgment upon Himself so that we might pass safely from death into life. Key Discussion Points:     -The Short Answer     -The Bema Seat Judgment     -The Sheep and the Goats Judgment     -The Great White Throne Judgment      -Believers and Condemnation     -The Intermediary State     -The Heart of the Gospel ⏱️ Timestamps:  0:00 – How many final judgments are in the Bible? 3:24 – Judgment #1: The Bema Seat  7:43 – What does the Bema Seat examination actually look like? 11:48 – Judgment #2: The Sheep and the Goats 17:14 – Judgment #3: The Great White Throne 20:39 – What happens when an unbeliever dies right now vs. the final judgment? 24:42 – How meditating on judgment points us to the Gospel and hope in Christ

Episode #079: Are Some Doctrines More Important Than Others?
2026/07/13
Episode #078: Why Trust The Bible If It Is Written By Men?
2026/07/06
Why Trust the Bible If Men Wrote It?  In this episode of Cage-Free Theology, hosts Clint Archer and Will Brannon tackle one of the most common objections raised during evangelism and skepticism alike: How can we trust the Bible if it was written by men? If you’ve ever wondered why Christians stake their eternal souls on this specific ancient text over any other scripture, Clint and Will unpack the supernatural framework that underpins biblical reliability. Far from a blind leap of faith, they explore the intersection of divine authorship and historical evidence, providing tangible reasons to believe. 🔍 What's discussed in the episode:     -The Claim of Scripture     -Internal Cohesion     -Defeating the Contradiction Myth     -The Ultimate Proof ⏱️ Timestamps: 00:00 - Why Trust a Book Written by Men? 01:38 - Are Science Textbooks Any Different? 02:23 - Understanding "God-Breathed" (2 Timothy 3:16) 04:57 - The Wind & The Sail: How the Holy Spirit Moved Human Authors 08:04 - Is It Circular Reasoning to Use the Bible to Prove the Bible? 10:51 - The Astounding Internal Consistency of 66 Books 14:52 - Answering the Atheist Objection: Does the Bible Have Contradictions? 18:54 - The Discovery of the House of David 22:23 - Prophecies Fulfilled 24:09 - Staggering New Testament Manuscript Evidence "Taste and see that the Lord is good. Episode #077: What Happens To Those Who Never Hear About Jesus?
2026/06/29
It’s one of the most common—and challenging—questions asked by believers and skeptics alike: What happens to the person in the remote corners of the world who dies without ever hearing the name of Jesus? In this episode of Cage Free Theology, hosts Clint Archer and Will Brannon tackle this heavy topic head-on. They break down popular cultural and religious perspectives, contrast them with orthodox Christian scripture, and explore what the Bible actually says about God's justice, human accountability, and the urgent reality of the gospel. 🔍 What's discussed in the episode:     -Universalism vs. Inclusivism: Why the idea that "everyone goes to heaven" or that "all religions lead to the same God" doesn't hold up under biblical scrutiny (and a surprising quote from C.S. Lewis).     -The Romans 10 Progression: How Paul’s argument for missions completely falls apart if people can be saved without hearing the gospel.     -Are There Any "Innocent" People? A deep dive into Romans 1 and how creation and human conscience leave humanity "without excuse" before a holy God.     -Providence and Preparation: How God uses dreams, visions, and circumstances to prepare the soil of a heart—and why He still chooses human beings instead of angels to plant the seed of the gospel. ⏱️ Timestamps:     0:00 – The ultimate question: What happens to those who never hear about Jesus?     0:51 – Defining Universalism & Inclusivism (and that C.S. In this episode of Cage-Free Theology, Clint Archer and Will Brannon recap their very first time attending the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) Annual Meeting in person. Transitioning from a skepticism of denominational bureaucracy to being pleasantly surprised by the "festive," spiritual atmosphere, Clint and Will break down exactly what the SBC is, how its unique flat authority structure functions, and why it matters to the local church. They dive deep into the headline-grabbing "Mohler Amendment" (the Truth and Unity Amendment regarding qualifications for the pastorate) explaining what actually passed, correcting sensationalized mainstream media reporting, and highlighting why loopholes in "friendly cooperation" forced a constitutional vote. From double-amputee introductions and high-school pages to a joke resolution about coffee, Clint and Will share their favorite moments, biggest surprises, and a rallying cry for why pastors need to show up to Indianapolis next year to see the vote through. Topics covered in this episode:     -The SBC vs. Denominations     -The Mohler Amendment Explained     -Behind the Scenes of an 18,000-Person Business Meeting     -The Power of the Cooperative Program     -Funny highlights  ====================================  👇 Jump to moments (chapters): 0:00 – Is a massive business meeting actually boring? 0:46 – What is the SBC?  3:54 – First impressions and why the SBC is basically the "Woodstock of Baptists" 7:22 – Why we went 10:55 – What the mainstream media got completely wrong about the vote 13:23 – The lighter side of the convention: Armless compliments and coffee resolutions! 16:44 – The Cooperative Program and how the SBC funds the largest mission organization in the world Listener Note: If you want a deeper dive into the biblical framework surrounding the role of women in pastoral preaching, be sure to check out our previous dedicated episode on the topic! #010: Women Pastors: Why The Controversy? - https://youtu.be/xtzaoSxDN1k Sermon From Pastor Clint - "Gender Agenda: Women in Worship" - https://youtu.be/6_PyIFZOmI4
