Federal Retirement Changes: What’s New—and What Stayed the Same
2026/09/29
Federal retirement rules are always surrounded by proposed changes, workplace rumors and plenty of unanswered questions. But which changes actually happened—and which ones never made it across the finish line?
In this episode, Rayna reviews several important developments affecting federal and postal employees. She explains the move toward online retirement and disability applications, what supporting documents may still need to be uploaded and why employees should carefully review forms generated through the online retirement application system.
Rayna also clears up lingering questions about the FERS supplement, employee pension contributions and proposals to replace the high-3 pension calculation with a high-5 average. She discusses the new ability to complete Roth conversions within the TSP and explains why the tax consequences should be considered before moving a large amount of money.
Finally, Rayna offers an important reminder: The wait for interim retirement payments and final processing is still very real. Preparing adequate cash reserves—and knowing how the TSP might serve as a backup—can help make the transition into retirement less stressful.

FEGLI Explained: What Federal Employees Need to Know About Basic, Option A, B and C
2026/09/25
Federal Employees’ Group Life Insurance can be a valuable benefit—but the different coverage options, age-based price increases and retirement reduction choices can quickly become confusing.
In this episode, Rayna breaks down FEGLI Basic coverage and Options A, B and C in plain English. She explains how Basic coverage is calculated, what the 75%, 50% and no-reduction choices mean, and why she regularly cautions federal and postal employees against dropping their Basic coverage without first understanding its long-term value.
Rayna also explores why Option B can become considerably more expensive as you age, how full reduction works after retirement and what happens to your coverage when you stop paying premiums. She then explains Option C family coverage, including who it covers, when children age out and why some retirees may want to keep coverage on a spouse.
Before changing or replacing any federal life insurance, it is important to understand what you have, what it costs and how it fits alongside any outside coverage. A thoughtful review can help you protect your family without paying for benefits you no longer need.

From Paychecks to Pensions: What Changes When Federal Employees Retire
2026/09/22
Retirement changes more than your employment status. Your paycheck schedule, benefits contacts, approach to savings and daily routine may all look different—and preparing for those changes can help make the transition smoother.
In this episode of Rayna Retirement, Rayna Reyes walks federal and postal employees through the financial and personal adjustments that come with leaving work. She discusses moving from biweekly paychecks to a monthly pension, comparing take-home income, and preparing for the period while OPM processes your retirement.
Rayna also explores continuing health coverage into retirement, reviewing your plan during Open Season, coordinating benefits with Medicare, and shifting from building savings to using them.
Plus, she explains why you should retire to something—not simply away from work—and why conversations with your spouse and family belong on your retirement checklist.

Life Insurance While You’re Living: What Federal Employees Should Know
2026/09/18
Life insurance can do more than provide a benefit after you’re gone. Depending on the policy, living benefits may allow you to access part of your death benefit while you’re alive following a qualifying illness or injury.
In this episode of Rayna Retirement, Rayna Reyes explores the difference between FEGLI’s living benefit provision and the benefits available through some individual life insurance policies. She discusses terminal, chronic and critical illness benefits, how eligibility and underwriting work, and why understanding the conditions for a claim matters.
Rayna also shares her family’s experience using a living benefit after her husband’s cancer diagnosis—and how that payment gave them additional financial flexibility during treatment.
For federal and postal employees approaching retirement, this conversation offers another way to think about protecting your savings and preparing for unexpected healthcare needs.

Podcast Extra: Emergency Funds in Retirement
2026/09/17
The fall season is upon us, and among the normal fall cleanup of a financial portfolio is an equally important but often overlooked part of retirement planning: building and maintaining an emergency fund in retirement.
This month's vignette discusses how an emergency fund can help cover unexpected expenses without forcing someone to sell investments at an unfavorable time, and why having a clear cash-reserve strategy can provide both financial flexibility and peace of mind.

Should you use accumulated sick leave before retiring? Contribute a percentage or a fixed dollar amount to the TSP? Keep family coverage after your children are no longer eligible? In this episode, Rayna Reyes plays a federal-benefits game of “yes or no” to help federal and postal employees identify some of the decisions they may need to revisit.
Rayna covers sick leave, TSP contributions and fund choices, health and life insurance, dental coverage and the importance of involving your spouse in retirement planning. These choices can affect your paycheck, retirement income, survivor benefits and insurance coverage—so understanding what you have today is an important step toward planning for tomorrow.

2026/09/11
Losing someone you love is difficult enough without having to navigate unfamiliar forms, agencies and financial decisions at the same time. In this episode, Rayna Reyes explains the important steps families of federal employees and retirees may need to take after a death—including filing a FEGLI claim, notifying the appropriate federal office, applying for survivor benefits and contacting the Thrift Savings Plan.

Deferred or Postponed? What Happens When You Leave Federal Service Early
2026/09/09
You may be ready to leave your federal or postal career—but that does not necessarily mean you are ready to begin receiving your pension. Depending on your age and years of service, you may need to choose between a deferred or postponed retirement.
In this episode of Rayna Retirement, Rayna Reyes explains the difference between these frequently confused options. She discusses minimum retirement age, the permanent reduction that can apply under MRA+10, when an unreduced pension may become available and what leaving federal service could mean for benefits such as FEHB, FEGLI and the FERS Special Retirement Supplement.
Rayna also identifies one decision that can jeopardize your future pension: withdrawing your retirement contributions after leaving federal service. Before turning in your notice, make sure you understand which benefits you are preserving—and which ones you could permanently lose.

Should You Roll Over Your TSP? It Depends on What You Need
2026/09/06
Should you leave your retirement savings in the TSP—or roll some of it into an IRA or another retirement vehicle? The answer isn't the same for everyone.
In this episode of Rayna Retirement, Rayna Reyes breaks down the TSP rollover decision in plain English. She looks at some of the TSP's biggest strengths, including low costs, market exposure and liquidity, while also discussing potential limitations involving income planning, risk, required distributions and what happens to your money after you're gone.
Rayna also explains what a rollover actually is, why moving qualified money directly from one retirement account to another generally isn't the same as taking a taxable withdrawal, and why you don't necessarily have to choose between keeping everything in the TSP or moving everything out.
The goal isn't to find the one "best" account. It's to determine what you need your retirement savings to accomplish—and then build a strategy around those goals.

Use It or Lose Value? The Truth About Sick Leave Before Retirement
2026/09/04
Federal employees are often encouraged to save as much sick leave as possible—but is holding onto a huge balance until retirement really the best strategy?
In this episode of Rayna Retirement, Rayna Reyes explains how unused sick leave factors into your federal retirement calculation and why employees approaching retirement may want to think strategically about how they use it. From medical and dental appointments to family care, bereavement, FMLA and other eligible purposes, your sick leave can be a valuable benefit while you're still on the job.
Rayna also walks through an example showing the difference between using legitimate sick leave while remaining an employee versus simply carrying the entire balance into retirement—and why the distinction can matter for your paycheck, TSP contributions, matching funds, health benefits and overall retirement plan.
The takeaway: don't misuse your sick leave, but don't automatically assume that saving every hour until retirement is the smartest move, either. Know the rules, schedule the care you need and make your accumulated benefits part of your overall retirement strategy.

Federal Retirement Is a Family Affair
2026/08/25
If your spouse is a federal or postal employee, their retirement decisions can have a major impact on your financial future, too.
In this episode of Rayna Retirement, I’m talking directly to spouses about the federal benefits and elections you need to understand. We’ll discuss survivor benefits, what happens to health insurance after the federal retiree dies, your rights involving TSP withdrawals, and how life insurance and beneficiary designations work.
Most importantly, we’ll explain why spouses should be part of the retirement-planning conversation from the beginning. Some decisions require your consent, while others can affect your income, insurance and financial security for years to come. Retirement affects the entire household—and both spouses should understand the choices being made.

TSP 101: What Every Federal Employee Should Know
2026/08/21
Your Thrift Savings Plan may become one of your biggest financial assets—but do you really understand how it works?
In this episode of Rayna Retirement, I’m getting back to basics and answering some of the most common questions federal employees have about the TSP. We’ll talk about the difference between Traditional and Roth contributions, how much you can contribute, how the government match works, and why contributing just 5% doesn’t necessarily mean you’re “maxing out” your TSP.
We’ll also look at TSP loans and withdrawals, what happens once you retire, and why taxes and Medicare costs should be part of the conversation before you start taking money out. Finally, we’ll discuss the pros and cons of leaving money in the TSP versus considering other options—and why that decision should depend on your individual retirement goals rather than a one-size-fits-all answer.
