Description

The Whispering Woods: After Dark was formerly known as Obscurata. It is still the place for the darker stories. The unsolved cases, strange disappearances, true crime, occult history, paranormal reports and unexplained events that don’t quite fit anywhere else. Each episode looks at the stories that linger after the lights go out. Some are rooted in crime. Some in folklore. Some in witness accounts, old reports, rumours, fear and the things people have never been able to fully explain. Different name. Same dark corners. Brought to you by the creators of The Whispering Woods. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The Classmate Who Never Existed: The Pan Bowen Incident
2026/11/08
In 2013, three students entered an abandoned school dormitory in Tianjin after a shuttlecock landed inside. One of them, Pan Bowen, turned back to look for his keys and was never seen again. When the other two returned to school, almost nobody seemed to remember Pan at all, and the records they expected to find no longer appeared to contain him. Years later, the story was posted online and became one of China’s best-known modern “glitch in the matrix” mysteries. People Who Entered Fairyland: Missing Time, Hollow Hills & the Otherworld | British Folklore
2026/11/01
For centuries, British folklore has told of people who crossed into another world hidden beneath hills, inside caves or just beyond the edge of an ordinary field. Some returned believing only minutes had passed when years had gone by, others were warned never to eat, drink or take anything with them, and a few were said to come back changed forever. From King Herla and Thomas the Rhymer to Welsh fairy dances and medieval accounts of underground kingdoms, these are the stories of people who were said to enter Fairyland and the strange rules that governed whether they ever came home. The Red Light in the Rice Fields: Thailand’s Krasue, Creepy Folklore
2026/09/26
For generations, people in rural Thailand have told stories of the Krasue, a woman whose head leaves her body after dark with her internal organs hanging beneath it as she travels in search of blood, carrion and filth. Strange red, green and orange lights seen moving above fields have repeatedly been linked to the creature, and remarkably, alleged sightings continue today, with reports from Ratchaburi and Lopburi in 2023, Surin and Buriram in 2024, and Phetchabun as recently as February 2026. Ghost Stories, Folklore & City of Ghosts with Thom Burgess
2026/09/26
In this special episode, I'm joined by writer and screenwriter Thom Burgess for a chat about ghost stories, folklore and a lifelong fascination with the supernatural. Thom talks about growing up surrounded by the ghostlore of Kent, from the phantom bride of Bluebell Hill to the stories that first frightened and fascinated him as a child, and how that interest eventually found its way into his own writing and the Paramount horror film Passenger. Along the way, we get into M. R. James, haunted pubs, phantom hitchhikers, the strange ways folklore has moved online and, inevitably, those deeply unsettling Cat in the Hat videos. Thom also shares a couple of his own unexplained experiences, including a very strange night in a Seattle hotel. We also talk about City of Ghosts: The Canterbury Ghost Story Festival, taking place in Canterbury on 3 October, which brings together more than 300 years of ghost stories, folklore, literature, film and the supernatural. Season of the Witch: The Islandmagee Witches | Possession, Haunting & Ireland’s Last Witch Trial
2026/09/19
In 1710, strange disturbances began inside Knowehead House on the Islandmagee peninsula in County Antrim. Stones appeared from nowhere, bedclothes were arranged into the shape of corpses, and a ragged childlike figure was seen moving through the house before apparently predicting the death of its elderly resident, Ann Haltridge. After Ann died, eighteen-year-old Mary Dunbar arrived and soon began suffering violent fits, claiming invisible women were attacking her and producing pins, feathers and other objects from her mouth. Her accusations eventually sent eight women to prison for witchcraft and drew a ninth person into a case that became Ireland’s last major witch trial. Season of the Witch: The Killing of Ann Tennant | Victorian Witchcraft
2026/09/12
On 15 September 1875, seventy-nine-year-old Ann Tennant left her home in the Warwickshire village of Long Compton to buy a loaf of bread. Minutes later she was attacked by agricultural labourer James Haywood, a neighbour who had become convinced that Ann and a number of other villagers were witches. His extraordinary claims would follow him from the harvest fields of Long Compton to the courtroom at Warwick and eventually to Broadmoor. As summer wanes and the nights grow long, we turn to tales of witches, curses, and the old ways that never truly died. For centuries, harvest time has carried its own magic: charms for fields, blessings for homes, and darker stories of those who bent nature to their will. Season of the Witch: The Rollright Stones & England's Witch Village | British Folklore
2026/09/07
BONUS Above the Warwickshire village of Long Compton stands one of England's strangest prehistoric landscapes. According to legend, the Rollright Stones are a king and his army turned to stone by a witch, while generations of local people told stories of bleeding elder trees, fairies dancing around the stones, impossible stone counts, shape-shifting witches and ancient monuments that moved after dark. Even into the twentieth century, Long Compton retained its extraordinary reputation as a village where the influence of witches was said to come and go like the full moon. As summer wanes and the nights grow long, we turn to tales of witches, curses, and the old ways that never truly died.
