The Cost of Winning
2026/10/22
Send us Fan Mail What's the price of success in marching band? And what if you could actually calculate the cost of every point on the scoreboard? In this episode, Scott and Chris take a decidedly different approach to the money conversation, combining Scott's decades of experience in music education with Chris's analytical mindset to tackle a question few programs have probably ever considered: How much does it really cost to produce a competitive marching band show, and what are you getting for your money? From show design, music arrangements, and drill writing to instructional staff, props, uniforms, and everything in between, the Band Dads break down the expenses behind a successful production. And some of the numbers might surprise you—including where the biggest investments happen long before the first student steps onto the rehearsal field. Using a model of a competitive, midsized marching band, they uncover a production costing nearly $77,000, roughly $650 per student, and an astonishing $900 per point scored! But here's where things get interesting. Does spending more actually produce better results? Is competition financially fair? And if another thousand dollars could move your band up two places at state, would you spend it? Along the way, Scott and Chris explore the often-overlooked value of instructional staff, the financial advantages of larger programs, and the delicate balance between competitive ambition, responsible budgeting, and keeping the experience affordable for families. As always, expect plenty of laughs, a few unexpected revelations, and a thought-provoking conversation that reminds us there's a difference between knowing the cost of something and understanding its value. And this time, we're giving you the tools to do the math yourself! Download our customizable spreadsheet from these episode notes, plug in your own program's numbers, and discover what your marching band really costs. Hot Takes Volume 1
2026/10/08
Send us Fan Mail Everyone has an opinion about marching band. The Band Dads have a few they probably should've kept to themselves. In this episode, Scott and Chris put each other on the spot with a series of surprise questions designed to uncover their most unfiltered hot takes about the activity we all love. Should every student have the opportunity to march? Are BOA and DCI helping or hurting the activity? Do band directors work too many hours? When should family come before rehearsal? And is social media making marching band better or worse? Those are the serious questions. Then things get a little ridiculous. Which section would survive longest on a deserted island? Who has the best snacks? Which band stereotypes are actually true? What's the greatest band bus movie of all time? And seriously, what does Scott have against the trombones? From thoughtful discussions about the future of music education to completely unnecessary debates about band kids and their quirks, the Band Dads cover a little bit of everything. As always, it's a conversation filled with humor, healthy disagreement, and a genuine appreciation for the students who work incredibly hard to bring music, movement, and artistry together. We may question the activity, but we'll never question the incredible kids who make it happen. And now it's your turn! What's YOUR marching band hot take? Have a controversial opinion, an unpopular perspective, or a question you'd love to put the Band Dads on the spot with? Send it to [email protected]. Nothing is off the table, and your question might just make it into the next round of Hot Takes! We want to here from you! Money Money Money
2026/09/11
Send us Fan Mail Fundraising. Every band needs it, every parent has experienced it, and somebody somewhere is probably still trying to sell a roll of wrapping paper. But before we talk about how to raise money, the Band Dads start with a bigger question: Why are band programs responsible for raising so much of it in the first place? Scott and Chris are joined by Band Mom Leah Lang, fundraiser extraordinaire, for a conversation that starts with school funding, instruments, uniforms, and the basic costs of running a band program. What should schools be responsible for providing? And are band parents sometimes so good at filling the gaps that we've unintentionally made it easier for those gaps to remain? Then it's time to make some money. Leah takes us behind the scenes of a crowdsourced fundraising campaign that brings success year after year, and the Band Parents break down what made it work—from choosing the right platform and timing the campaign to branding, student participation, group goals, incentives, corporate matching, director buy-in, and creating an experience the kids actually want to be part of. Because successful fundraising isn't just about asking people for money. It's about building a campaign people want to support. And yes, there are pies in the face, shaved facial hair, car washes, mattresses, mulch, and apparently even manure involved along the way. Whether you're a director, booster, or band parent trying to fund the next season, Money Money Money is packed with ideas to help you raise more, keep more, and maybe even have some fun doing it. Have a crazy fundraiser that's actually worked? A brilliant incentive your students loved? Or a fundraising horror story we simply have to hear? Send it to [email protected]. We want to hear how your band makes the money happen. The fundraising platform referenced in this episode is PledgeStar. There website is https://pledgestar.com/ . When is Enough Enough?
2026/08/26
Send us Fan Mail Competition changed marching band. But after decades of pushing the activity further, faster, bigger, and more competitive… when is enough, enough? In this episode, Scott and Chris step back and ask some uncomfortable—but important—questions about what competitive marching band has become. Over the past 25 years, the activity has evolved tremendously. Performances are more sophisticated, productions are bigger, and what students accomplish can be astonishing. But all of that comes at a cost. How much rehearsal is too much? How early is too early to start the season? How much money is too much to spend? And most importantly, is competitive marching band as it exists today still consistently creating the positive experiences and outcomes we want for kids? Then comes the harder question: if something needs to change, how do we get our hands around it? The Band Dads explore the limited oversight that exists across much of the activity and look at places like Texas, where the UIL provides defined rules and guardrails. Would other states benefit from similar structure? If you were suddenly put in charge of marching band, where would you draw the lines around rehearsal time, season length, spending, competition, and student welfare? This isn't a rallying cry against competition or a declaration that marching band needs to change. It's a thought exercise about an activity we love enough to question—delivered with the usual Band Dads mix of serious conversation, practical perspective, and not taking ourselves too seriously. Now we want to hear from you: If you were in charge of competitive marching band tomorrow, what would you change, what would you protect, and when would you finally say, “Enough is enough”? Send us an email to [email protected] and tell us. We have a feeling the Band Dads community is going to have a lot to say about this one. The Band Camp Playbook
2026/08/02
Send us Fan Mail Band camp doesn't come with an instruction manual. So the Band Dads made a playbook. For the Season 4 kickoff, Scott and Chris take a different approach to the band camp conversation. Instead of simply talking about what happens at camp, they dig into the strategies and philosophies behind it—and why getting those decisions right can have such a tremendous impact on the season ahead. How should a band camp schedule be built? Should every program approach it the same way? How should those precious hours be used most effectively? What goes into the operational side of running a successful camp? And perhaps most importantly for parents: how do you best support your student through the process? There are an incredible number of moving pieces that have to come together to make band camp work, and there is no single formula that is perfect for every program. But that doesn't mean there aren't important questions every program, director, student, and parent should be asking. The Band Dads walk through those questions and help you think about band camp as a whole—from the schedule and instructional time to logistics, expectations, student preparation, parent support, and everything in between. Because here's the bottom line: there is no other time in the marching band season when a program can accomplish what it can during band camp. The concentrated time, shared experience, intensity, and opportunity for growth are completely unique to marching band—and what happens during those days can lay the foundation for everything that follows. So whether you're a first-year band parent wondering what you've gotten yourself into, a veteran parent looking for a new perspective, a student getting ready to tackle camp, or a director preparing to make the most of those precious days, The Band Camp Playbook is here to help you get there. And now we want to hear from you. What worked at your band camp? What absolutely didn't? What camp traditions, strategies, disasters, successes, or stories have stuck with you? What happened at your camp that you think the Band Dads—and the rest of our amazing band family—would enjoy hearing about? Send us an email and share your story to [email protected] . Tools of the Trade: Band Camp Quest
2026/07/22
Send us Fan Mail Welcome to the very first installment of Tools of the Trade—a new Band Dads series where Scott and Chris spotlight innovative ideas, resources, and practical tools that can help band programs of every size become even more successful. To kick things off, they're introducing Band Camp Quest. After the overwhelming response to Scott's leadership resource earlier this year, he turned his attention to one of the biggest challenges every band director faces: band camp. The result is Band Camp Quest, a simple but powerful tool that transforms the countless tasks, milestones, and objectives of band camp into an engaging achievement system inspired by modern video games. As Chris explains, there's something incredibly satisfying about unlocking every achievement and checking every box in a favorite game. Band Camp Quest takes that same feeling of accomplishment and applies it to real life, encouraging students to engage, participate, and take ownership of their progress throughout camp. The idea isn't entirely new, it has its roots in a tradition Scott used years ago as a band director. At the end of each day during camp, students gathered for Vespers, where staff and section leaders awarded beads that members proudly displayed on lanyards throughout the week. Those beads became symbols of effort, growth, leadership, and achievement. Band Camp Quest reimagines that timeless concept for today's generation, delivering the same motivation through a modern, digital experience that resonates with today's students. In this episode, Scott and Chris break down exactly how Band Camp Quest works, why gamification can be such a powerful motivator, and how directors can implement it with ease. Best of all, it's priced so that every band program—large or small—can afford to bring it to their students. If you're looking for a fresh way to increase engagement, celebrate progress, and make band camp even more memorable, this episode is one you won't want to miss. We want to here from you! The Summer Trifecta
2026/07/05
Send us Fan Mail When the final school bell rings and campuses empty for the summer, it may seem like band takes a break. Nothing could be further from the truth. In this episode, Scott and Chris explore what they call the Summer Trifecta, the three groups quietly working behind the scenes to ensure the next marching band season is a success. What are the students doing? What are the booster organizations doing? And perhaps most importantly, what are band directors doing while everyone else assumes they're enjoying a well-earned summer vacation? The Band Dads take a closer look at each side of the trifecta, revealing the countless hours of preparation, planning, recruiting, fundraising, scheduling, organizing, teaching, and practicing that happen long before the first note is played at band camp. Because while school may be out, the band machine never really stops. With band camps kicking off around the country, there's no better time to understand why the work happening now is so critical to the success of the season ahead. Whether you're a student, parent, booster, or educator, you'll come away with a greater appreciation for the people who spend their summers laying the foundation for an unforgettable year. As always, expect plenty of laughs, practical insight, and a few behind-the-scenes stories that just might change the way you think about summer in the band world. Strategic Depth - Season 3 Recap
2026/06/04
Send us Fan Mail Season 3 was different. As Scott and Chris look back on another incredible season of the Band Dads Podcast, two words kept rising to the surface: strategy and depth. This season felt more intentional than ever before. Timely episodes like Fill the Darn Chair, Leadership Season, and Contest Season weren’t just conversation, they became practical resources released exactly when band families, parents, and directors needed them most. The real-time relevance of those discussions allowed listeners to immediately apply what they were hearing to their own programs and experiences, adding a level of usefulness that made this season feel truly special. But Season 3 also went deeper than ever before. Episodes like Band Around the World opened the door to conversations about how music education and band culture exist across different countries and communities, while unexpectedly inspiring an entirely new spin-off series: Offbeat. That creative spark eventually led to one of the most unique episodes the Band Dads have ever produced with Offbeat: Percy Grainger. The research and passion behind these episodes pushed Scott and Chris creatively in ways they hadn’t experienced before. The season also featured unforgettable moments with the Band Moms in their wildly successful two-part The Real Bandwives episodes, plus a special crossover appearance on The Boosted Volunteer Podcast with Robin Eissler and Booster Hub. And of course, at the core of it all, the Band Dads stayed true to what they do best: taking topics that are fun, real, and relatable, whether it was talking travel live from Times Square or navigating difficult conversations about bad band directors, and finding ways to turn them into meaningful, practical conversations with real takeaways. Most importantly, this season reminded Scott and Chris of something they still struggle to fully comprehend: this community continues to grow far beyond what they ever expected. In a podcast space where analytics are often limited and difficult to measure, the messages, interactions, and support from listeners around the country, and the world, continue to prove that this community is something truly special. And for that, the Band Dads are incredibly grateful. Stay tuned this summer for some fun new surprises… including adventures with “The Real Band Mom” fresh off her trip to South America. Until then, thank you for listening, thank you for caring, and thank you for being part of this amazing band family. Enjoy the downtime. We want to here from you! Bad Band Directors
2026/05/20
Send us Fan Mail This week, the Band Dads tackle a topic that might make some people a little uncomfortable… What do you do if you have a bad band director? Before anyone jumps to conclusions, Scott and Chris take a thoughtful and fair approach by breaking the idea of a “bad” band director into three very different categories: A new educator still trying to find their footingA director who may struggle in a specific area that parents and boosters could help supportA truly bad situation—where the environment or leadership is genuinely harmful for students and the programFrom there, the conversation gets real. Who is actually responsible when things go wrong? When conflict arises, do you automatically side with your child… or the director? How should parents evaluate situations fairly before emotions take over? Scott puts Chris on the spot with his personal litmus test for handling difficult interactions with educators, which leads to the debut of the “Flynnrific Rubric™”—a surprisingly practical and level-headed framework for determining whether a situation is truly serious or simply the natural friction that can happen in high-pressure activities like band. The episode becomes even more personal when Scott shares a firsthand experience involving his own son and a band director he believed was genuinely bad for students. Rather than simply venting, he walks listeners through the exact steps he took to pursue resolution in a productive and responsible way. This episode is honest, practical, and full of real-world advice—not just for band, but for navigating difficult leadership relationships anywhere in life. It’s a nuanced conversation about accountability, communication, fairness, and ultimately doing what’s best for kids. We want to here from you! Offbeat: Percy Grainger
2026/05/04
Send us Fan Mail Welcome to Offbeat—a new Band Dads series where Chris and Scott go beyond the music to explore the fascinating, unusual, and sometimes downright bizarre stories behind the figures who shaped band, music education, and the art form we love. And if you’re going to start somewhere… you might as well start with one of the most offbeat figures of them all: Percy Grainger. When an episode opens with a conversation about a composer’s private whip collection—one he donated to a museum in his honor (and yes, the number will surprise you)—you know you’re in for a ride. In this episode, the Band Dads dive into the life of one of the earliest and most influential composers for wind band. A brilliant musical mind with a deeply complex and, at times, troubled personal life, Grainger challenges us to consider a timeless question: can genius and turmoil exist separately—or are they often intertwined? From his early years as a piano prodigy, to his uniquely close relationship with his mother, to his bold personality and unconventional worldview as an adult, this episode explores what made Grainger both groundbreaking and controversial. His approach to composition defied tradition—reshaping tonality, structure, and the very idea of what wind band music could be. The result was a body of work unlike anything before it… and arguably unlike anything since. But the conversation doesn’t stop in the past. Chris and Scott also ask the question: How would someone like Grainger be received today? Would he still be celebrated? Would he be controversial? Would he even be someone we’d invite to work with our students? This is a fun, thought-provoking, and eye-opening look at one of music’s most fascinating figures—and just the beginning of what Offbeat has in store. 🎧 As a bonus, check out the links below for virtual walkthroughs of the Grainger Museum and dive even deeper into his world. Contest Season : Behind the Curtain
2026/04/17
Send us Fan Mail What Band Directors Face When It’s Just Them Even when marching season may be over, the competition hasn’t stopped. This time of year, band programs shift into a world that many parents and even students don’t fully understand: concert band contest season. The format is different, the pressure is different, and for band directors… the stakes can feel even higher. In this episode, the Band Dads take a deep dive into the world of concert band evaluations—where directors stand alone. Unlike marching band, there’s no large instructional staff to lean on. Every musical decision, every rehearsal moment, and every result falls squarely on the shoulders of the director. It’s a setting where music educators truly put their craft on display—and where reputations are often built. We break down: What concert contests actually look likeHow ensembles are evaluatedHow music is selected—and how it should be selectedWhy these performances matter so much in the world of music educationFor parents, this is an inside look at a side of band that is just as competitive and meaningful as anything on the field—if not more so. If you’ve never experienced it, this episode might just convince you to attend. And if you really want to be amazed? Go watch a sight-reading performance. It’s one of the most impressive displays of musicianship you’ll ever see. We also cover a few key etiquette tips so if you do attend, you can be a great audience member in what might feel like unfamiliar territory. Carnegie Hall & Canceled Flights : NYC Travel Edition
2026/04/01
Send us Fan Mail Scott and Chris leave the confines the Scott Lang Library and take you with them to the heart of New York City—where towering skyscrapers, the energy of Times Square, and the buzz of 5th Avenue set the stage for a once-in-a-lifetime performance at Carnegie Hall. But this episode is about more than just the performance. It’s about why travel matters. From gaining independence and experiencing new cultures, to learning how to adapt, problem-solve, and grow outside of the rehearsal space—traveling with a band or orchestra creates lessons that simply can’t be replicated anywhere else. Recorded live as they walk through 5th Avenue, 6th Avenue, and Times Square, Scott and Chris share real-time reflections on the impact of these experiences—and even a deeply personal moment from Scott that made this trip unforgettable. Later in the episode, Chris is joined by Basha High School Orchestra Director Jonathan Gott, who shares a story every parent thinks about—but hopes never happens: What do you do when something goes wrong? When a sudden flight cancellation leaves his group stranded, Jon walks us through how they navigated the challenge and ultimately got everyone home safely—highlighting three critical travel takeaways: Contacts, Communication, and Contingency. You’ll also hear about a powerful and personal visit to the 9/11 Memorial Museum, and how moments like that can shape perspective far beyond music. To close the episode, we bring you something truly special—an audio recording from Carnegie Hall: “Autumn Elegy” by Robert Sheldon, performed by the Basha Symphony Orchestra, with guest conductor Scott Lang in a full-circle moment years in the making. Leadership Season
2026/03/11
Send us Fan Mail It’s that time of year again—band directors everywhere are rolling out their processes for selecting student leadership teams for the upcoming fall season. The decisions made during leadership season can shape the culture, tone, and success of a band program long before the first rehearsal of summer band even begins. In this episode, Scott reflects on a time when he realized he got it wrong. A leadership selection that didn’t produce the results he hoped for forced him to step back, rethink his entire process, and work backwards from the outcome he actually wanted. What kind of leaders did he want his students to become? What culture was he trying to build? And how should the selection process support that vision? From that reflection came a five-step approach designed to identify the right leaders and develop the characteristics he wanted to see throughout the band. Scott walks through that process and shares the lessons learned along the way. The Band Dads also offer perspective for parents navigating leadership season with their own students. Is it Drum Major or bust, or should families take a broader view of what leadership in band can look like? As always, expect thoughtful insight, honest reflection, and plenty of entertaining moments in another great episode of the Band Dads Podcast. The Real Band Wives Part 2
2026/02/19
Send us Fan Mail The conversation continues… After the cliffhanger ending of Part One, the Band Moms are back with Libby Denny to finish the story—and this second half delivers in all the best ways. What begins as an honest look at the challenges of being married to a band director turns into something even deeper: a celebration of the love, loyalty, and lifelong bonds that are built inside the band community. From navigating long seasons and shared sacrifices to discovering unexpected moments of joy, Part Two leans into the heart behind the hustle. You’ll hear lighthearted stories that perfectly capture what makes band life so unique—like students serenading you with bagpipes, and even uncovering a band director’s secret color guard talents. These moments are funny, yes—but they also speak to something bigger: the respect, gratitude, and connection that grow when people invest in one another through this activity. From start to finish, this episode reminds us that band isn’t just a job, an extracurricular, or even a season—it’s a family. And the relationships formed along the way have a way of leaving a permanent mark.
