FULL SHOW: A prison officer's 15 years inside, Shane Oliver on rates and the shark cull fight
2026/10/01
Nick rang Luke on 2GB after a chat about second chances, and he had 15 years of stories. As a NSW prison officer at Lithgow and at the women's jail at Emu Plains, Nick saw the perspex crack in a riot and had an inmate tell him she knew where his family lived. His view is that most prisoners don't want to be rehabilitated. Some of his own stories, like the woman who left jail a qualified chef, point the other way.
AMP chief economist Shane Oliver blames government spending for the Reserve Bank's rise to 4.60%, but he doesn't expect another rise before Christmas.
In the Man Cave, shark fisherman Joel Nancarrow and Adam McDonald fall out over culling after the fatal attack at Sorrento Beach. Luke's dangerous dog question changes the argument. Adam also brings in a first generation Humphrey B. Bear.
Thomas fills in for Kelsey, plus David Shoebridge as Greens leader.
Guests: Nick, Shane Oliver, Joel Nancarrow, Adam McDonald
This episode contains strong language. It discusses sexual assault in prison, domestic violence, violent deaths and fatal shark attacks.

Truckie Tuesday: The NHVR Boss In Rod's Cab, And Fighting A Ticket
2026/09/29
Truckie Tuesday on its own, for anyone who just wants the truck stuff. NHVR chief executive Nicole Rosie spent a day in Rod Hannifey's truck out of Dubbo, and Rod had a list of about 32 questions waiting. Back on Truckie Tuesday she answers the one drivers ask most: is the regulator out to get them? She says education with drivers is up, and that the hard end of enforcement is for repeat, high-risk operators with years of breaches, some of them on their fourteenth letter. Not mudguards. Rod still thinks the fines are too high for anything that isn't a safety breach.
She also covers sham contracting and why an EWD on its own won't solve fatigue. If trucking wants more women behind the wheel, she says the first fix is toilets and showers.
Before that, Belinda Hughes from Hughes Law on whether to pay a ticket, fight it or ask for a review. Angus wins Where's Rodney.
To ask the NHVR to review one of its fines, email [email protected] and allow 42 days.

FULL SHOW: Should Prisoners Work On Victoria's Roads? Plus, Ai 'Annihilation '
2026/09/24
Victoria wants minimum-security prisoners working on its roads. Kerry Tucker spent her sentence in the state's maximum-security women's prison untangling airline headphones and sanding chairs in a hot shed, and she tells Luke what work inside should actually be for: getting a woman ready to live next door to you when she gets out, not just filling in her day. She makes the case for education, explains why short sentences leave women serving long terms waiting years for programs, and says building more beds is the lazy fix.
Kerry also goes back to the $1.9 million she took from her employer, the spin class where she was arrested, a month in the police cells with women she had once judged, and the night before her release, when she asked if she could stay.
In the Man Cave, Professor Toby Walsh from UNSW Sydney explains what an AI agent is and why we can't simply pull the plug. Tom Denham is in the chair for the news, from Trump's superintelligence line at the UN to smart glasses at the pool and a runaway emu at Nashdale.

Truckie Tuesday: Roadside Rights, Potholes & Merging Rules
2026/09/21
Truck drivers, roadside stops and what an officer can actually make you do. Belinda Hughes from Hughes Law takes Truckie Tuesday through your rights on the side of the road, and along the way she puts a stop to something a lot of drivers have been told for years: that a curtain across the back of the cab makes the bunk a private area they cannot enter. It does not. She also explains what they can ask you, what you are actually required to say, why the body worn camera is running for the whole hour, and what happens to the one or two sentences they pull out of it afterwards.
Rod Hannifey is pulled over at Parkes after a week where nothing went right, including a two hour job that took four and a half. He has the results of last week's poll on the 5 per cent problem, and half of you blamed the companies and customers setting the schedule.
Plus: Adam has had ten cars in one hour refuse to dip their headlights, Callum sends in Matty The Truckie's video about the thank you wave, and Fiona wants to know who was in the wrong when a cattle truck would not let her past. Rod has a rant about what merging actually means in law, which is not what most drivers think it means.

FULL SHOW: Politics As Reality TV, Who Looks After Us & Rocky Horror
2026/09/21
Jessica Wang, a journalist who covers federal politics started out writing about reality television, and she says the two jobs are not that different. Protagonists, antagonists, a main plot, side plots, and producers steering the narrative they want you to follow. Luke, who watched reality contestants get handed radio shows with no talent, has been saying a version of this for twenty years.Plus: the Intergenerational Report says we will live longer and have fewer children, and Luke asks who is actually going to look after us, then admits he does not know. Four out of five cigarettes in this country are now bought illegally and nobody can measure smoking any more. Tony Burke's immigration reset at the National Press Club. Four deaths in a weekend and a domestic violence emergency the police cannot explain. A listener's idea for a tax break on country holidays, which Luke tries to claim as his own. Shane Adam Bassett on the death of Tim Curry and the Oscars walking away from television. And Truckie Tuesday 138 with Rod Hannifey and Belinda Hughes, on fatigue, your rights at a roadside stop and half of Victoria's roads falling apart.
Guests: Jessica Wang, Shane Adam Bassett, Rod Hannifey, Belinda Hughes

Would You Fly With No Pilot? Runway Scares, Peter Brock, And Spotting A Fake Birkin
2026/09/17
What's real, what's fake, and who gets to decide? The ATSB has opened six investigations into runway and taxiing incidents at Sydney Airport since late July. Aviation researcher Dr Graham Wild from UNSW Canberra tells Luke whether it's still safe to fly, why he thinks air traffic control leans on old technology, and whether you'd ever board a plane with no one in the cockpit. Along the way: why planes don't fly higher, what's actually in jet fuel, and why you won't get sucked out of an airlock if you stand at the back.
Then Drive's James Ward remembers Peter Brock 20 years on, from the Energy Polarizer Holden refused to sell to the 1987 Bathurst win decided after the flag, and explains why electric cars just outsold petrol in Australia for the first time and what to check before buying a used one.
In the Man Cave, Adam McDonald is joined by Leanne Coneybear, president of the National Pawnbrokers Association of Australia, on how a pawn loan really works, the myths about stolen goods, a Birkin with glue under the stitches, the fake that fooled a 30-year watch expert, and why Rolex and Pokémon cards run on scarcity.
Plus the week's news with Kelsey: Daniel Billings sentenced for the murder of Molly Ticehurst, Pauline Hanson's comments about Indigenous Australians, and the HYROX race everyone's talking about. And your voicemails on local music, Hanson and Anthony Albanese, and a new song from Jono.
This episode discusses domestic violence and murder, racist comments about Indigenous Australians and, briefly, suicide.

Truckie Tuesday: The 5% Problem, Fleets At Auction & Fatigue (Solo-Cut)
2026/09/15
Rod Hannifey has been doing the numbers. He reckons 80 to 85 per cent of Australian truck drivers do everything right, another 10 to 15 per cent get pushed too hard by a boss or a customer, and fewer than 5 per cent have decided the rules do not apply to them. What worries him is that police ministers and commissioners seem increasingly willing to talk about the whole industry as though it were that last 5 per cent. This week he puts those figures to you directly and asks whether they match the industry you know, and what could actually be done about it.
Rod and Luke also work through where your electronic work diary data ends up once Transport Certification Australia is holding it, and what happens when AI is pointed at five years of records. NatRoad chief executive Warren Clark has written about operators still signing contracts with no fuel recovery clause, which leads into something Rod has been watching from the road: whole fleets appearing at auction, and the undercutting spiral that follows when that gear sells cheap. There is Toll's new hydrogen prime mover rollout with Viva Energy and BlueScope, the story of what really happened to LPG, and Victoria's five proposed heavy vehicle licensing reforms, which prompt the line of the episode: we do not have a driver shortage, we have a shortage of people who want to be drivers.
And for R U OK Day, Rod makes the case for ringing a mate, with a number from his own Christmas phone calls that is hard to hear.
Plus a copy of Toots: Woman in a Man's World by Donna Vawdrey to give away, a Hughes Law court win teased for next week, and Where's Rod Been returns with an Ian Moss clue.
⚠ Content warning: this episode includes a brief, non-graphic discussion of suicide during the R U OK Day segment. Listener discretion advised.

"He's never been asked to leave the National Party, ever," the Maranoa MP and former party leader tells Luke. "That is an outright lie, and I'm very disappointed that he'd even say that." He also takes on migration numbers, the fuel excise, whether Pauline Hanson went too far on Anthony Albanese's late mother, and whether Erin Patterson's solitary confinement crosses a line.
Then Dr Karl Kruszelnicki on a new Harvard study that puts cabin crew and pilots at the top of 503 occupations for radiation-linked cancer deaths, what hydrogen can and can't do for ships, planes and steel, and why yawning is contagious. Scott Phillips from The Motley Fool on why One Nation's early-super policy would worsen the problem it's meant to solve, and the surprisingly good story of Australian credit from Bankcard in 1974 to tap-and-go. Daily Telegraph journalist Jessica Wang on what the Canberra press gallery actually sees. And on Truckie Tuesday, Rod Hannifey on Toll's new hydrogen prime movers, Victoria's licensing shake-up, fuel clauses and the race to the bottom, and a question he wants every driver in the country to answer.
Plus listener mail on the Aldi middle aisle, superannuation, and who should be playing the grand final.
This episode discusses suicide and mental health. Support: Lifeline 13 11 14 (24/7).

What Actually Fixed The Worst Boys In Her School? | Man Cave
2026/09/11
Tracy Tully spent a career in the roughest schools in Australia, and she taught on both sides of 1995, the year corporal punishment ended in Queensland state schools. She caned children. The ones she caned still stop her in the street. Ask her whether it should come back and the answer is not the one you expect. This one is a Man Cave, so Luke Bona and Adam MacDonald get there sideways. It starts with dumb phones, a 20 cent yo-yo now worth 700 dollars, and Adam's theory that everyone is just trying to buy their youth back. It lands on what happens to boys who grow up without a man in the house who gets them. Adam's answer is one teacher, a jiu jitsu coach, and week on week off with a mother he never stopped getting along with. Tracy's answer is the story at the centre of this episode.First day at a school out west, brief of two words: fix it. By five o'clock she had expelled the six worst boys in the school, and by five o'clock she had a plan for them. Her family ran shearing teams. She asked for six men she could absolutely trust. The boys went into the sheds for six weeks with no phone, no alcohol and no drugs, running at dawn, learning how to fix a tap, sitting around a campfire at night having the conversations nobody had ever had with them. Every parent signed. Every boy stayed at school. She gave each of them a shearer's singlet and they wore it into town like a uniform. Most of them are still in the game. Also in this one: Book Week costume bans, school uniforms as the great leveller, the student who was allowed to identify as a cat and drink milk from a saucer while Adam's son got pinged for wearing a hoodie, Adam's own father walking into a police station, and a 1965 Humphrey B. Bear that is about to go in the post.Guests: Tracy Tully, author of FEARless Buckle UP Build ResilienceHeads up: this episode discusses the corporal punishment of children, a ten-year-old being assaulted, a father striking his teenage son, threats made against a family, and two deaths. Truckie Tuesday: Refused A Licence Test Over An In-Cab Camera...
2026/09/07
Lachlan is a young truck driver. He booked his heavy vehicle licence upgrade, paid his fees, turned up at the testing centre, and was sent home. The reason he was given: the safety cameras inside his employer's truck can't be deactivated, and tampering with them is a sackable offence. Two other drivers from the same company had already tested in the same truck without an issue. Rod Hannifey and Luke Bona work through what he should do next, and it opens onto the question the industry hasn't answered. A truck is a workplace, but it's also a bedroom. So who gets to watch, and who keeps what they see?
Plus: the NHVR and Transport Certification Australia have built a new Generation 2.0 electronic work diary framework, with the specification due out within weeks, and Hughes Law's Belinda Hughes reads what the fact sheet doesn't say about where all that fatigue data is headed. Sham contracting is costing the country billions in lost tax revenue and driving decent operators out of business. NHVR chief executive Nicole Rosie is flying to Dubbo to spend a full day in Rod's truck. Senator Bridget McKenzie is confirmed for a coming episode. There's a new segment where you can put a legal question straight to Belinda. And Where's Rodney is finally solved, at Wyaga Creek on the Gore Highway.

Should The Swans Cut All Five Loose? | Man Cave Special
2026/09/06
Michael Hope has been around AFL his whole life, he knows Isaac Heeney and he knows his family, and he says the Sydney Swans now have a problem that suspending five players does not fix. On this Man Cave he tells Luke Bona and Adam MacDonald what he would do if he were on that board: trade all five at the end of the season, and bring in a testing regime the club runs itself. Hope trained as a pharmacist before he was a winemaker, and the detail he brings to what a drug test can and cannot find is the part of this conversation nobody else is having.
Plus: why an AFL club cannot simply tear up a contract the way an NRL club can, what Richmond were thinking on their Mad Monday, the lawyers already circling with civil claims, and the moment Adam pulls out a set of 1930s polio calipers and a straitjacket.
UPDATE, correcting what we said on air: this episode was recorded in late August. Since then, Victoria Police confirmed on 2 September that Sexual Crimes Squad detectives interviewed four men in relation to the Pullman Hotel allegations. Riley Bice, who the club also stood down, is not being investigated over the sexual assault allegations. No arrests have been made and no charges have been laid against anyone. Police expect to provide a further update in around eight weeks.
Everything discussed here is an allegation. Nobody has been charged.
Michael Hope's view of the AFL's illicit drugs policy is his own. For what the policy actually says, the AFL Players' Association publishes it directly.

Why Do Trucks Keep Hitting Bridges? Plus, Bridge Strikes & Tanker Chains
2026/08/31
This week's Truckie Tuesday: a new independently-verified report finds heavy-vehicle bridge strikes are costing the Australian economy $101 million a year — 1,220 incidents in the last 12 months, up 38% since 2018. Rod Hannifey and Luke Bona dig into why, including Rod's own story about a bridge clearance sign that was never updated after the road underneath it was resurfaced.
Plus: copper thieves targeting EV chargers and streetlights around the country, a new industry survey seeking every transport worker's voice on mental health, Rod's take on whether the NHVR's fatigue-blitz statistics tell the full story, a visit from NSW Minister Jenny Aitchison, Senator Bridget McKenzie confirmed for a coming episode, an update on the Great Western Highway works, a heartfelt tribute to trucking legend Toots Holzheimer, and a Legal Win of the Week from Hughes Law's Belinda Hughes.

Brown Paper Bags Backhanders & 3 Truck Licence Assessors Referred To Police
2026/08/24
Three heavy-vehicle licence assessors have been pulled from the NSW scheme and referred to police after a joint Transport for NSW/NHVR crackdown across Tweed Heads and Lismore. Rod Hannifey and Luke Bona ask what it means for every driver those assessors trained — and a listener writes in with an anonymous, unverified account of "brown paper bag" backhanders allegedly pushing safe local trucking contracts to cheaper, non-local operators.
Plus: a $100 million funding boost for the Great Western Highway's Blue Mountains rebuild, a $10,000 free training pathway launching for Cairns jobseekers, the NHVR's latest fatigue blitz results (6,100+ heavy vehicles checked, non-compliance on the rise), a Legal Win of the Week from Hughes Law's Belinda Hughes, and Rod's rant on logbook fines that treat honest paperwork mistakes as deceit.

The Last Australian Showman, The Sydney Swans Scandal & Penguins vs. Bird Flu
2026/08/20
He's the last touring boxing-tent showman left in the world, and 74 years old hasn't slowed him down. Outback legend Fred Brophy joins Luke Bona and vice captain Adam McDonald in the Man Cave for the full story — jail time at Pentridge, a run-in with Mark "Chopper" Read, deliberately cutting off his own finger, and why he says he's still got a few more years left in him.
Also this episode: is it really the worst time in 56 years to buy a first home in Australia? Motley Fool Chief Investment Officer Scotty Phillips joins Luke Bona to explain why the deposit — not the mortgage repayment — is the real barrier for young buyers, and the case against early access to superannuation. Dr Rob Zammit on the world-first program racing to vaccinate Phillip Island's penguin colony against H5N1 bird flu. Legal eagle James Glissan breaks down the Sydney Swans investigation and the presumption of innocence, plus the latest on Erin Patterson's appeal against her conviction.
⚠ Content warning: this episode's Man Cave segment includes a guest's own account of jail time, a serious injury, and past self-harm, with strong, unbleeped language. Also discusses a Victoria Police investigation into an alleged incident involving Sydney Swans players (unconfirmed, no charges laid) and a separate criminal matter involving minors. Listener discretion advised.
Guests: Fred Brophy · Scotty Phillips (The Motley Fool Australia) · Dr Rob Zammit · James Glissan (Glissan & Associates) · Adam McDonald (Evans Hastings Auctions)
