Jeff Strong's recent book Torn has sparked conversations across the Church, and for good reason. Jeff is a faithful father, former bishop, and mission president who watched his son walk away from everything he'd been taught, and ultimately from the Church itself. His family felt torn. Suddenly Jeff was living the question so many Latter-day Saint parents quietly carry: What did I do wrong, and will my family ever be whole again? Instead of retreating into fear, Jeff went looking for answers. He listened to hundreds of stories and studied the experiences of more than 20,000 current and former members. What he found is the heart of his book, Torn: most people don't leave because they stopped believing. They leave because somewhere along the way they stopped feeling seen, trusted, and spiritually fed. In this episode, we talk about why faith and belonging go hand in hand, and why so many people leave not because they stop believing, but because they stop feeling like they belong. We dig into how we can do better, how we can make more people feel included in our homes and wards, and what it really looks like to love beyond our current capacity. Because loving like Jesus means loving without conditions. Jeff's message is honest, but it's full of hope. A family doesn't have to be torn apart because its members believe differently. We spent the last 3 months working directly with over 300 teenagers ages 16-19. After getting home and reflecting on the experience we were so inspired by the youth of today we got to learn from them and be constantly surprised by their goodness and willingness to follow God and love the people around them. We also realized how genuinely complicated it is to be a teenager in todays world. There are more voices than ever before competing for our attention and its difficult to know what really matters and who to pay attention to when we have so many options. For our thoughts today we don't claim to have all the answers and we are probably struggling just as much as most of you but we just wanted to share what we feel are the things that teens (and honestly all of us) need to know right now during this exciting time of life. Hopefully this episode helps you understand some of the principles we feel matter most, who you are and who's you are and give you some tips on how to navigate this crazy but awesome life!
