Question 2: The end of your NH November ballot
2026/10/20
What’s that question on the back of your New Hampshire ballot asking about your school budget?  In this episode, Liz pulls clips from public hearings and school board meetings in Londonderry, Bedford, and ConVal to explain what Question 2 is (though you might hear it referred to as HB 1300), what it takes to pass, and what school boards say they’d have to cut.  Liz also explains fixed and variable costs using a household budget, though still doesn't love that type of comparison. BIG shout out to each community's/school district's public access livestream! Are you registered to vote? with (Supervisor of the Checklist) Vicky Nawoichyk
2026/10/13
Vicky and Liz implore you: PLEASE EXERCISE (your right to vote).  Vicky shares with Liz what a supervisor of the checklist is, what checklist she is the supervisor of, how to register to vote, how the town clerk does not go BEEP BOOP BEEP to register someone, and how an individual might be removed from the voter rolls.  Remember: you are eligible to vote in New Hampshire if (1) you are a US citizen, (2) you will be 18 years or older on or before Election Day, and (3) New Hampshire is your home. You can register on Election Day - or before!  What to bring to register to vote: You need to prove four things: 1. identity; 2. age; 3. domicile (where you lay your head at night); 4. citizenship. A current New Hampshire driver's license covers the first three, as long as the address is correct. It does NOT cover citizenship. For proof of citizenship: You can bring a passport, birth certificate, or naturalization papers with you - OR you can sign a legal affidavit to attest your U.S. citizenship. State of NH v. …State of NH? (a school funding story) with Zack Sheehan
2026/09/29
Do children in New Hampshire have a constitutional right to a public education? The State of New Hampshire is currently asking its Supreme Court to say...nope.  In this episode, Liz talks with Zack Sheehan, executive director of the NH School Funding Fairness Project, about thirty years of school funding lawsuits (Claremont, ConVal, and Rand), the state's appeal asking the court to throw out the Claremont decisions entirely, and what all of it could mean for you and your community. Strong recommendation: make an apple crisp while you listen (need a recipe?).  Become a monthly supporter of NH Has Issues at patreon.com/nhhasissues This episode pairs well with... This Episode is Trash (and Recycling!) with Andrea Folsom
2026/09/15
If you throw a seltzer can into a blue recycling bin in New Hampshire...where does it go?  In this episode, Liz talks with Andrea Folsom, the executive director at NH Recycles, about all things recycling (and a little bit trash). Liz vaguely remembers needing to recycle things as a youngster that had a "1" or a "2" on them, but wonders if that was a dream.  *Batteries Included* Become a monthly supporter of NH Has Issues at Patreon (patreon.com/nhhasissues) Links: NH RecyclesSolid Waste Safety ToolkitBatteries ToolkitRecycling 101 PresentationNorth Country: Let's Recycle Right!2026 NH Solid Waste Legislative Session RecapFuture New Hampshire landfills could face stricter siting process under new law (NH Bulletin)"Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take the Garbage Out," Shel SilversteinSupport the show Subscribe to NH Has Issues Substack Get your NH Has Issues merch! School Budgets, Property Taxes, and One Question with Alex Tilsley
2026/08/04
There's a new, statewide question on this November's ballot and it sounds simple: do you want to cap your school district budget? Spoiler alert: it's not simple. At all. And you know Liz LOVES simple questions! In this episode, Liz talks with Alex Tilsley about how the New Hampshire Legislature mandated a local question on the statewide ballot (?) this November and AGAIN in November 2028 (??), and the law will disappear in 2032 (???), which is, frankly, a really weird sentence to write.  But, hey, at least it'll help lower property taxes, right?! ...oh.
