One of the best things about being a horror fan these days is that we have not one, but multiple streaming services that cater to our darkest desires, and one of our favorites is Screambox. They have been curating some great originals yanked from some of the best genre festivals, and even released some series, like "The Trouble with Tessa" (read our review). And if you aren't familiar with the show, then you may not be familiar with the power couple behind if of Bethany Watson and Dennis Cahlo! Lowell and Matt are delighted to spend some time with the two filmmakers as they discuss what they've been watching, some behind-the-scenes tid bits about filming "The Trouble with Tessa," and a whole lot of laughter as we explore tangents upon tangents of digressing discussion. We had so much fun, we didn't even have time to get to our main topic, so stay tuned for a Part 2 coming soon!   Finally, happy belated birthday to Dennis, who celebrated another trip around the sun the day before this posts!  

Macabre Daily's Paper Cuts column has grown by leaps and bounds of the last 12 months, and has become a go-to source for reviews and interviews with some of the most exciting authors in the horror literature space. In an effort to increase the reach of these amazing discussions, Macabre Daily will be launching a special, PAPER CUTS PODCAST this month, and below is a preview of what's to come as host and Editor of the Paper Cuts Column, Sean O'Connor, speaks with author Luke Dumas about his latest novel, "Nothing Tastes As Good."

We love our physical media over here at Macabre Daily.  Aside from the satisfaction of having our favorite discs on our shelves, we’re big fans of the commentaries, supplements, and even the bloopers that show up alongside the updated resolutions of some of our favorite horror films.  Today on the podcast, we’re lucky enough to speak to Chris MacGibbon, Production Coordinator at Red Shirt Pictures, a company that works tirelessly to make the classics of yesterday look and sound incredible in our disc drives. Chris is no exception.  We go over his work on Scream Factory’s retrospectives on “Night of the Demons,” as well as his current projects for Synapse like the jam-packed 4K of 1986’s “Trick or Treat.” He also updated us on the long-awaited (even that feels like an understatement) “Fright Night part 2” 4K, which comes out later this year!  This is a look behind the curtain that collectors and film fans alike won’t want to miss.

One of our favorite films from 2024 was “The Daemon,” which premiered at the UK’s FrightFest. Like so many genre films, the process of even making a film can be a miracle in itself, but to get it shown at film festivals is a whole other level of accolade that many aspiring filmmakers can only dream of. The thing is, that’s only half the proverbial battle. As any filmmaker who made it past the festival phase will tell you, finding distribution for your film is as difficult as getting it made in the first place. Navigating this landscape can be challenging, and filmmakers David Yohe and Matt Devino know what this is like firsthand. After rave reviews for their film, they would spend the next 18 months working to find a distributor to bring it to the masses. Luckily, the fine folks at Screambox know what good horror looks like and were able to snag “The Daemon” as a Screambox Exclusive! When we spoke with the duo in September 2024, we spent the time talking about the themes of grief and cosmic horror, this time we talked about the journey from film festival favorite to finding the right distribution partner. Giallo January may be over, but that doesn't mean the black gloves and straight-edge razors go away for good! Just like horror, we celebrate the Giallo all year round, and after our episode with Marc Gottlieb we put our Giallo picks to our resident novice, Lowell Greenblatt! In this episode, Lowell, Matt, and Macabre Daily's Sean O'Connor explore how these films resonate with someone whose knowledge of them has been only in passing. Nobody really knew what to expect after Danny Boyle passed the torch to Nia DaCosta for the second installment in the “comeback trilogy” to his seminal “28 Days Later.”  It’s still early in the year, but it’s safe to say DaCosta’s “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” will be one of our favorites of 2026.  Who better to discuss it with than film journalist, Scottish expat, and drag king Samantha McLaren? From the twisted, cult-like imagery of Jimmy Savile, to the humanist science of Ralph Fiennes’s Dr. Kelson, to the incredible soundtrack, to that scene (no, the other one), McLaren and I peel away the film’s many layers, like…well if you’ve seen “The Bone Temple,” you’d know where I’m going with this.  If you haven’t, check it out before listening to our conversation, because we thoroughly spoil it. “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple “ is in theaters now.  For more from Samantha McLaren, check out her cover story in the latest issue of Fangoria (on newsstands now), as well as her Linktree.

Happy New Year from the Macabre Daily Podcast, and our first episode of 2026 is a real doozy as filmmaker Marc Gottlieb returns for another Giallo January episode! Matt is joined by Sean O'Connor as Lowell is away getting his black gloves resized, and they cover what a Giallo is, how it defies genre boundaries, and the relevance of the genre in our modern landscape. In this special episode of the Macabre Daily Podcast, Matt has a conversation with Author Grady Hendrix about Clive Barker's "The Books of Blood" volumes 1-3. Grady is a man who needs little introduction, but we're gonna give him one anyway!  Grady Hendrix is the author of some of the most original horror novels of the 21st century including "Horrorstör," "My Best Friend's Exorcism," "The Final Girl Support Group," "Witchcraft for Wayward Girls," and "How To Sell A Haunted House." Hendrix also writes non-fiction, and has written volumes on genre films and media by way of "Paperbacks from Hell" and "These Fists Break Bricks." He's a former journalist who also co-founded The New York Asian Film Festival, and was tapped by Berkley to craft a new afterword for their re-release of Barker's "Books of Blood Vol 1-3."  We discuss the lasting impact of Barker's work, what makes him so unequaled, and the inspiration he's had on the world of genre!

After a much needed hiatus, the Macabre Daily Podcast is back and this time Matt is riding solo on hosting duties and filmmaker Eric England joins to talk about the traits of great slashers! Eric is the creative behind films such as "Hostile Encounters," "Madison County," "Contracted," and "Josie" to name a few. Eric and Matt debate what goes into making a great slasher film, and more into Eric's career in genre and how it was cultivating a taste for cult cinema in Arkansas!

Ted collaborated with writer Thomas Krajewski on the story "Par for the Course." Ryan Samuel Carr is an artist and illustrator who is the artist-in-residence at the George A. Romero Foundation and has contributed his artwork to publications like Fangoria, Rue Morgue, Storm King Comics, and more. Ryan was previously on our episode discussing the art he did for "The Amusement Park," and we are delighted to have them both on this episode!
